10 Tips On How To Start Eating Plant Based

A plant-based diet is an eating pattern that focuses on only consuming unprocessed and unrefined natural foods. This diet includes grains, tubers, legumes, fruits, and vegetables. A plant-based diet has been known to help reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and even cancer. As of 2018, it has become the biggest dining trend in the United States, ensuring its subscribers a much healthier and environmentally friendly way of life.


While the benefits of eating natural plants seem more than enough to influence a worldwide transition, enforcing this change after thousands of years of meat-based diets has proven to be quite difficult. In most cases, health conscious individuals enter into plant-based diets with gung-ho attitudes, but are unable to continue due to attachment to old habits and a lack of understanding of how to transition. Achieving optimal health is not easy and like all things, preparedness is the key to success. Here are the top 10 tips on how to successfully begin your plant-based journey.


Tip 1: Research

Before you even think about going plant-based, it is wise to do some research for educational purposes and personal success. Weigh the pros and cons of making plants your only food sources. Whatever it is that’s motivating you to take such a big leap, make sure it’s something that’s right for you. This will increase your chances of success during the withdrawal phase. You will undoubtedly experience some cravings, which is why it’s important that you fully understand what this diet is and how you can benefit from it.


Tip 2: Make A Decision, And Stick With It

Commitment is everything when you make the transition to plant-based foods. Removing animal-based enzymes and processed foods from your diet will change the internal chemistry in the body. Going back and forth between diets may prove strenuous on your overall health.


Tip 3: Clean Out Your Fridge & Pantry

Once you commit to the new diet, it’s time to take action. Remove any and all items from your home that are not plant-based and replace them with items that are. The point of doing this is to alter your taste buds and prevent yourself from cheating on your new diet. Removing the temptation from your house is a painful yet necessary step.


Tip 4: Plan Your Meals

Going plant-based means that your food will have to be made fresh most of the time. Anything with added preservatives is not encouraged while adhering to this diet. Make it easy on yourself by buying bulk items like whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds, and other foods with a long shelf life. You can also try meal prepping one day on the weekend to make your life easier during the week. There are even plant-based meal delivery services that can ease your transition.


Tip 5: Start Small, Keep It Simple

As you begin to preparing your own meals, you’ll notice that you feel more satisfied when you focus on the basics. You don’t want to drain your energy by attempting to make a three-hour recipe with 47 ingredients. Instead, look for recipes that look delicious and require minimal effort. A plant-based diet requires more fresh ingredients so be sure to allot ample time to prepare everything. Keep your meals simple, no need to complicate things with gourmet entrées or three course meals; well, not yet anyway.


Tip 6: Recreate Your Favorite Recipes

Try to find alternative plant-based ingredients for some of your favorite recipes. It may not be possible to do this with all of your go-to recipes, so understand that there will be a difference in the way the dishes taste. Replace the non-plant based items with whole food items. For example, you can substitute mushrooms (portobellos work great) for meat in recipes that call for some type of meat. You can also blend nuts with various spices in a food processor to create raw plant-based meats.


Tip 7: Find Your Plant-Based Tribe

This is a great time to search your favorite social media network for like-minded individuals or groups that share you enthusiasm and interest in the plant-based diet. You may even have friends who have already transitioned to a plant-based diet and can illuminate the path to success. Participate in a challenge and start sharing the recipes you make to inspire others who may want to make the plant-based switch.


Tip 8: Explore Local Food Options

To piggyback on the previous tip, make it a habit to go out to local plant-based restaurants, where you can experience unique creations that you may not think to make at home. Try to do this at least once a week, especially since more and more plant-based restaurants are popping up around the nation. Have fun exploring the diet by immersing yourself in the lifestyle. Take note of any dishes that you may want to make for you or loved ones at home.


Tip 9: Be Patient, There Will Be Drawbacks

Subscribing to a plant based diet is not easy, and you may experience symptoms of withdrawals or even deviate from the path a couple times. What you need to understand is that failures like these are still part of the process and it is important to go at your own pace. Be patient and take this new diet one day at a time. Always remember that things will get easier with time, as long as you stay committed.


Tip 10: Add Some Plant Based Supplements To Your Diet

    Q: What's the best way to start on a vegan/raw food diet?     If I do say myself, the best way to start a raw food diet is to be coached by me.     Here are some other tips to get started.

    1: Join a raw food meetup group or community. Surround yourself with supportive people who can point you in the right direction. Try meetup.org or 30bananasaday.com

    3: Start simple with breakfast. Always start your day with a green smoothie. read "Green smoothie revolution" by forget authors name at the moment. heh.

    A sample meal plan would be.

    Breakfast: Green smoothie

    Bridge: raw bar, handful of nuts or seeds, or fruit

    Lunch: Raw wraps made from collard greens. use a base of tahini, hummus, or nut butter. Fill with sprouts and colorful veggies

    Q: Nothing is stopping me except the lack of a workable plan of action, which I am in the process of putting on paper. There is a question that I've wanted to ask you for a while. Do you have or can you put together a sample daily menu of food choices based on what you eat, or what your research has shown to be good? I do have a couple of conditions I want to cure....     Q: I have ordered the detox cleanse, and the weight cleanse. Both state to eat a raw diet of veggies and fruit, nuts, nut pastes??, legume sprouts, seeds, plant oils, sea veggies??,and fresh juices. It mentions Vegan Diet. What are my options when it comes to these choices? What do I eat and how often to keep my sugar from dropping, and feeling sick? Usually mid am, and mid afternoon?


    The best way to balance blood sugar and keep your body in a fat burning zone is to eat low fat and every 3-4 hours. Also high raw and high carb. Here are some options. Just a general outline.

    Q: I was online searching for some natural treatments for hair growth in Black Men when I came across your article. I must say that I believe it was so on point that I decided not to look any further. I'm 44 years of age and started noticing my hair thinning when about 12 years ago. I was one of those that you wrote about in your article chasing a lifestyle that is no longer an interest to me. I did fall into some bad habits that were not good for my health off and on over the past 15 years or so more off than on. My body type I would describe as athletic. I'm tone, and strong when I exercise regularly. I'm about 150lbs @ 5'11". My diet is mostly vegetables but from time to time I feel I have to eat fish or chicken. Not necessarily prepared in the healthiest way I'm sure. I just got out of one of my "on" spells so to speak. Meaning the drinking of beer and cigarettes. I've been smoking and drinking beer now since September 2006 after not having done anything but live healthy for six years before that. As soon as my wife and I came back to the states and started working and runnign again these old destructive habits appeared again in my life. I only blame myself though. Right now my hair and skin suffer from the chemical poisoning from the habits that I just mentioned. I am prepared to take your advice about righteous living to heart and start fresh again. Is there a mild remedy that can work with me to stimulate the re-growth of my hair in the spots where it is balding in that classic balding pattern? I am generally very healthy when I doing right and even now rarely get sick. But my sickness manifest in stress and bad habits to num the pain of having to live this way when don't really want to.     Q: Thank you so much for doing all that you do. I wish that you were in my everyday life...If I ever come to Cali, I hope to be able to take you up on some of your services. I have given your site out to many people that cross my paths...most recently, a man with diabetes who is going blind. He seemed to be quite thankful for your info...I do hope that he contacts you...and my friend who perhaps has a problem with a parasite(s). But me....okay just waiting for tax refund and then I will hit you up for another full-body detox...and perhaps a parasite kit myself...as it is sad but true..with my current boyfriend careless but kind...I now have a problem with genital herpes...a small breakout every other month...I eat well for the most part...ofcourse it could be better. But the stress is hish...I am working on that. But my question is...would an air purifier do me any good? You see I live in Dundalk, Maryland...near baltimore...near a Steel plant, and a yeast plant, and close to the military practice bombing sites, and other military negative stuff, and the city polluted with car pollution, tons of light pollution, and they spray for mosquitos...then I go to work and I work at a place called ABC Supply...great place right, well the stress is high, and the building we work in is shot...I swear there is mold under the carpets in one of the rooms...the ceiling is constantly leaking and we don't know what from...and the fumes from forklifts and the asphalt from the shingles...the filterfrom the intake gets changed like once a year...but is filled with 'shit' probably in a day or week. So the answer is to get a new job and move...yeah I know...I just don’t know how to do it...or where to go. Since I moved here, I have a problem with my ears...filling up with water or histimine or whatever...usually if I don't drink enough water near my menstrual cycle...I went to a doctor once and basically walked out of the office telling him what to do for his cold...yasee..he was no help...I knew more than him already....these past two years have been bad for allergies. Now, my ears and my throat...my nose too...though I do clean it out with water and that helps. I am not the only one. In the past two years there is a great number of people who say the same thing...they have never had a problem with allergies until these past two years. My grandmother and next door neighbor are two..but many more...well they just started up that steel mill again probably about that time...they sprayed hard core for mosquitos right before my grandmother started having problems...global warming for one...and i dont' know..but two years ago I was involved with a group of people sending out petitions against an LNG liquid natural gas plant that would bring in a ship two times the size of a football field and a huge pipe line to pennsylvania, and a skyscraper of a building to store the gas. Well...we fought against it...but apparently the gas company has more say than our own local government...I don't know...but hear about it every once in a while that they are still trying to get it built.     Q: I have the alternative diet and lifestyle manual and want to make sure that this applies to the respiratory condition as well. Can I have the rice bread with no gluten or wheat? or rice pasta being that I have sarcoid? Can I eat cold water fish or venison in small portions along with veggies? What about rice or soy milk or protein whey shake for breakfast once or twice a week?     The manual applies when you are FINISHED with a cleanse or kit. Follow the regimen's diet. It clearly states NO COOKED FOOD. You are asking us about cooked food here. Stick to the diet plan and you will be alright! You are asking about foods no good for your condition. Whey is crap. Meat is no good. Grains are no good for you as well.     Q: I am interested in starting the Full Body Detox program. At this time, I would like to know which program is best for me. At current, I have started removing things from my diet as of 2 weeks ago (pork, chicken, red meat, I'm trying with the fish but it's hard!) I am not eating cheese but I still eat yogurt and every now and then I will eat a boiled egg (egg whites). I have removed soda from my diet, no coffee, I drink herbal or green tea, pomegranate juice or orange juice and I drink filtered water (I have a countertop filter that I change every 6 months and the Brita pitcher that I change every 2 months). Along with the supplement, is there an eating plan that you can suggest for me? I am eating more fruits and vegetables, but I would welcome suggestions on certain foods that I can eat while I begin my cleansing.

    Q: I see also that you recommend a complete diet with these programs. I am guessing its a vegan diet right? I wanted to ask something on that is coconut milk and coconut oils ok for that? I personally had a very hard time trying to eat that many vegetables and many ph balance vegans seem to think fruits aren?t good either. I eat that many vegetables one it tears me up the next day and two I just cant consume enough calories that way. I can try and make up for it by eating things like almonds but I eat to many almonds I get the same problem the next day. Now coconut milk (unsweetened) and a digestive enzyme works for me for picking up extra calories.... but I hear very conflicting information about coconut and its saturated fat content. Is it ok to use daily as a part of the diet for cleansing? And your oxy-drops are those the same as the drop for ph balancing water?? Or is it something different? I am wanting to start lifting weights as I need to put on some muscle and I?m wondering if its something that would be beneficial in combating muscle soreness by increased oxygen in the body.

    Q: I am 42 years old. My teeth are not the straightest, but they seem heathy an are white. The dentist recommended that I get braces or a visalign to straighten mainly the bottom teeth. He stated "As we age roots may get twisted and it could lead to problems." I have the 2 bottom canine, that are almost sideways. What would be your opinion be regarding correcting this based on possibilities?


    Great question! I would be able to answer better if I could actually see your teeth. The alignment of our canines protect all our other teeth. They are critical. Two things for sure happen when the canines come in rotated. One, they do not function fully and therefore all your other teeth can get unusual forces placed on them. We call these forces interferences. Secondly the root of the canine can end up very close to the root of the lateral next to it. When this occurs, bacteria can travel down the side of the tooth, under the gum and increase the possibility that you get bone loss between the two teeth (canine and lateral). The bone is very thin between those roots when the canine is rotated. Also, more plaque accumulates because it is often difficult to clean between the canine and lateral.

    These are the reasons I would suggest moving forward with braces if what I am describing pertains to you. I hope this makes sense.

    Q: I have had bacterial vaginosis for about 2 years now. My symptoms are not bad, as I only feel a little bit of itching and burning every now and then. But I do have a lot of discharge, which generally actually does not smell foul. The reason is gardnerella. I have tried all kinds of treatments from antibiotics, boric acid, homeopathy and magnetism, but nothing has helped so far. I've been a vegetarian for almost ten years now, although I do eat fish from time to time. I avoid breads, dairy products, eggs and seafood. However, I've been really busy lately and in a lot of stress, so I have been paying less attention to what I eat. I do prefer pretty comfortable clothing though. As far as treatment goes, I am not interested in daily baths or douches (have tried this as well based on a homeopath's recommendation) or anything like that, as I simply don't have the time or the conditions for it. I currently live in a Third World Country. What can and should I do? I am thinking more of supplements etc. I hope you can give me some advice

    Q: Thanks for all of the information which is very beneficial I must say. My question to you is what's the best type of aloe vera juice to drink? Also I have heard that the gel from the plant can be mixed into a smoothie, is that true? Greetings! As far as the best brand I really wouldn't know as there are a few good brands on the market. Just make sure your aloe vera juice is at 99% pure and with no additives. Aloe gel can be added to a fruit smoothie though


    I personally wouldn't add it to a fruit smoothie.

    Q: How can I make the transition from cooked food, to raw food? Do you have any raw recipes for children? How can I get kids to eat raw?

    Q: Hi Dherbs. I'm pregnant. I've been slacking off with my diet for years now, eating just about every bad thing but pork. I had gestational diabetes with my last pregnancy. Now I may have it again with my current pregnancy at 4 months. They're going to give me the 3 hr test and I know they'll try to make me take insulin. I really don't want to shoot myself with needles.
