4 Tips To Stay Active During The Holidays

The last thing you want at a holiday or New Year’s Eve party is for your pants to rip, and you especially don’t want them to rip because of weight gain. Unfortunately for the majority of people, weight gain and the holiday season go together like salad and dressing. Instead of your pants refusing to stay sewn shut while you dance your way into the New Year, you can take action and prevent this by learning to stay active during the holidays.

 

It can be difficult to focus on fitness during the holidays because holiday shopping, parties, events, and more take over your schedule. The successful approach to being active this holiday season is to broaden your fitness horizons and not limit your view of what activity should be. You don’t need to hit the gym, sweat it out at a spin class, or get in touch with your inner Zen master at a yoga workshop. All of those suggestions are possible and beneficial, but you can also use the following tips to keep fitness in your life.

 

Exercise When You Get Up In The Morning:

We all know that the days can get away from us during the holidays. End of the year projects, holiday planning, travel, meetings, and more can derail your plans. For example, you may wait until the day before your office’s white elephant gift party to go out and buy your gift. Holidays are filled with the unexpected, so keep fitness a constant by exercising in the morning. You can do an interval circuit at home, walk your dog for 30 minutes, or practice a yoga sequence. Movement is movement and that is beneficial for the body.

 

Join A Challenge:

Social media can feel like a life-draining force, but there are pockets of hope and worth. People post workout challenges on Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter, and they often provide detailed instructions to execute the exercise(s) properly. Be it a 30-day plank challenge, one-week ab challenge, or 10-day squat challenge, the gentle competitive nature and camaraderie of people, who have the goal of staying fit, can inspire you to exercise consistently during the holidays.

 

Sign Up For A Race:

Thousands of races take place during the holidays, and they are often themed, family friendly, and an all around great time. Ranging from 5ks to half marathons and more, holiday races are great for keeping yourself in shape. You don’t want to enter without preparing, so you’ll be forced to train in the time leading up to the race. Make the race a group activity so that you can all train for the race together!

 

Traveling During The Holidays? Prepare Yourself:

Travel has almost become an inevitable part of the holiday season. Some people use their travel time as an excuse to take a break from fitness, but we don’t advocate that mentality. If you regularly exercise, don’t let your travel plans change your fitness habits. Bring the athletic gear you need to perform your desired fitness activity. If you have a gym membership, see if you can locate a branch of your gym where you are going and make time to go there during your travels. If there is no gym and it will be extremely cold outside, bring resistance bands to do at-home workouts.

 

However you decide to stay active during the holidays, understand that we support you and encourage you to not sleep on fitness. You need to burn the calories that you’ll most likely eat! Finally, if you can’t do any of the tips we mentioned, take the stairs whenever possible.

    Q: As a diet controlled diabetic I question being able to change my diet(to raw/live foods) while I keep up the same rigorous exercise and fitness program without suffering from too many low readings of which I am prone.The program has gotten me off insulin.I also have diverticulitis and seeds and nuts have been a problem for me in the past.     Thanks for the question. I hope this helps. If you are under a doctors supervision I am forbidden to give you any advice that may alter a doctors advice. They have little to no nutritional training but their word trumps everyone. 

    What I can do is point you in the direction of programs getting the results you desire. Those three are Dr. Neil M. Barnards "program for preventing and reversing diabetes" (DVD,book), Dr. Gabriel Cousins "Raw in 30" program (DVD) and "There is a cure for diabetes" (book), and recently The Gerson Therapy has released a program for diabetes (book). 

    The common denominator in all three programs is a low fat vegan diet. The differences are that Barnard's program is a cooked vegan diet while Cousins' and Gerson's program are raw. All get results but the raw programs have a 75 percent success rate in 1 month where as the cooked version of Barnards get results in 6 months. Big difference.

    I have gotten people off of insulin in around 2 months using a high raw and low fat vegan diet. I use no oils and nuts. I do encourage avocados and seeds for fats. However, with diverticulitis you must avoid seeds until your body repairs itself through a high alkaline diet. I suggest getting a bulk of your fats from avocados and coconut. I usually limit myself to a half an avocados worth of fat a day. 

    I would look into those books first and if you are under a doctors supervision bring those materials to him/her and see what they say.

    Q: Hey Gary here are my challenge I'm 43 been trying to lose weight, I start on a program and stop once I don't see any results. I tried the Detox I think I lost about 5 pounds, I work at night and have a part time jobs seeing private patients in the day so my sleep pattern is little maybe I get 4 hrs of sleep I'm having problems getting this weight off. I also want to mention when I do exercise my joints swell so I try to keep it low impact. I also have sweet tooth so I get these cravings here and there more so when I'm at work at night.     Lets go through one thing at a time. Your overall schedule and lifestyle is not healthy and will likely sabotage your health goals. Receiving so little sleep will prevent major weight loss because your body cannot cleanse and cannot recharge. You must repay your energy debt before you can properly lose weight. Your body is always in a state of playing catch-up to the workload you are giving it. It stores fat because it doesn't have the
    energy to properly function. I understand crazy schedules but they will not get you the results you desire. I would focus on trying to find a more balanced or healthier schedule before adding the stress of losing weight to an already overworked body.

    Q: Greetings! I have listened and been blessed with your wisdom many times while you've been on L.I.B. Radio. Thank you for all you do for so many! I am writing on behalf of my father. He is 80 years old and before now, he was EXTREMELY active (bowling, golfing, exercising, etc.). In early December he started suffering with severe leg pains. During his stay in the hospital, they finally found he had three bulging disks in his back that were referring this relentless pain to his leg. They gave him so many painkillers that the meds burned his esophagus and he was throwing up that dried blood. He stopped taking those meds and is in constant pain. He has been home from the hospital for about 6 weeks now. The steroids they have him on are supposed to bring down the inflammation, but they haven't. He saw an acupuncturist, but those treatments haven't helped. He has not slept more than two or so hours at night in all these weeks, as the pain is that unbearable. I am not sure what other info you might need, but any guidance you could offer would be so very appreciated. I thank you for your time and your help. I wish such blessings and peace to you and yours!     In re your father, painkillers are not the way because they only mask the symptom (pain).

    First, get your father a magnetic bed pad for him to sleep on. Do a Goggle search on the Inter-Net to locate a magnet distributor. He needs to sleep on a magnet pad nightly. A magnetic back brace also wouldn't hurt. He could wear it daily during daylight hours.

    Order the Headache and Pain tea and give the tea 2-3 times per day.

    Also order the carbon (activated charcoal) and give him this each night (to help remove the pain killer residue that is eating up his nerves).

    If he can bathe still, put him in hot water with 2-3 boxes of sea salt each bath and let him soak for about 30-45 minutes.

    Perform the above for starters and keep us abreast.

    Q: Our 13 year old son forgets everything. He has a difficult time focusing on one task and is distracted easily. He is not a hyper child. He forgets to shut the lights off when he goes to bed, forgets to bring his lunch bag home, etc. It is very trying for us. Is this just teenage boy behavior? Is there anything that will help his brain to work in a more organized manner?

    Q: My question is regarding fibroids. I have been told I have had fibroids about the size of someone 3 months pregnant. I have been told there are two in clusters. They gave me the diameters, but I don't have that information at this time. My OB/GYN has told me he believes it is causing me to be slightly anemic. I have been trying some remedies on my own like more exercise and a change in diet. My primary physician does not recommend surgery she has me taking iron ferrous sulfate supplements twice per day to help with my iron count. It seems to be helping. The only problem I have with taking the iron supplements is that it sometimes causes constipation and I am normally pretty regular. I usually eliminate 2 times per day sometimes 3. My OB/GYN on the other hand keeps pushing for me to having surgery.& amp; nbsp; They had me take BC pills, however I took myself off of them because they made me sick. I took them only for 6 months. I'm 45 and have never taken BC pills ever and I don't want to start now. I've never been pregnant. I flow heavy on my 2nd and 3rd day heavy and after that it is manageable. My cycle has improved however I want to reduce the flow on those days if possible and of course dissolve the fibroid if at all possible. Doctors tell me they won't go away unless removed. I used to be on my cycle for 7 days and 4 of those days were heavy. Now I'm normally on for 4 days and only the 2nd and 3rd day are heavy. I know that as I reach menopause they may shrink in size, however I'm still aways off from that. I eat no red meat however I do eat fish and poultry. I eat a pretty good balance of vegetables and fruits, mostly raw and steamed. I drink lactaid milk. I don't eat much dairy except cheese and eggs occasionally. I do have a weakness, I love potato chips. I know this is not good. I can feel the fibroid get bigger when I eat them. When I stop for a period of time it decreases in size. At least I feel like it does. I'm not a sugar craver, however during the week before my cycle I'll crave sweets. I usually resist. I feel it's my diet that has caused the fibroids as well as every female in my family has had a hysterectomy due to fibroids. I think it is also hereditary as well. Whatever the case I'd like to know what regimen can you put me on that will help me? The goal is to reduce or dissolve the size of the fibroid so it is not affecting my iron level.     Q: I want to start the raw food diet, but do not want to lose weight has i am under weight already. I need tips to gain or at least maintain my weight. I do lift weights as part of my exercise routine.

    Thanks for the question,

    Losing "weight" on a raw foods diet is a definite probability. But the weight might be excess fat and water retention due to detoxing. By weight I am assuming you are talking about muscle. It is not that complicated to keep muscle while on a raw food diet. The Vegan Effect diet program I created is 60-90 percent raw. Raw before dinner if that helps. I allow myself one cooked meal a day. For the most part the diet is a Low fat/high carb/high fruit/high alkaline diet. 

    The most important thing to remember is getting enough calories. My athletes (including raw body builders) typically eat 1000 calories of fruit for breakfast in the form of a green smoothie. Usually post workout. You need to eat roughly 3000 calories to maintain or grow muscle mass. Some of my mass building athletes eat as much as 5000 calories. Albeit at a higher fat ratio than our standard 70/10/20 carb/fat/protein ratios.

    Q: I recommend this site to all because it has helped me in so many ways, that I was hoping it may be of help to my 11 year old niece. She is really shy towards others, even at school. To the point where last year, it started affecting her school work. Because, at school you have to interact with others, as well as participate in class. At home with family she's active, sociable, and lot's of fun. When she gets around others she shuts down, believe it or not. I was talking with her mother, my sister and she realized that we was that same way aswell growing up. I don't want her to go through life like that, if there is a way to help her. My sister mentioned pills. Since I have found your site there is no way that I'll have her popping man made pills, when there are herbs that are safe. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.     Q: I recently completed the Full Body Detox, which I loved. Now, 2 months later, I am very interested in the weight release program. Last year, I lost 40 lbs in 8 months, in the most healthy way (good nutrition and exercise). This year, I slowly started gaining weight back, and 1 year later, I continue to gain weight much more quickly. I am still working out regularly, and eating well.     Q: I've been eating vegan (mostly raw) for nearly 2 years. In the first year, I lost about 60 pounds. I still have about 50 more to lose and it hasn't budged in almost a year. I hear conflicting info about what sort of exercise would be best - cardio vs. strength. And any time I up my exercise, my hunger gets out of control. Any suggestions?

    Thanks for the question. The most efficient way to lose weight from working out are high rep/low weight circuit training and through HIIT (high intensity interval training).

    Your goal should be to increase metabolism and fat burning potential throughout the day. Both HIIT and circuit weight training are both effective. To be maximized you should exercise for 1 hour 5-6 times a week. You could alternate between cardio days and circuit training days. Here is an example.

     

    Mon: HIIT

    Tues: Circuit training

    Wed: rest

    Thurs: HIIT

    Fri: Circuit training

    Sat: HIIT

    Sun: Rest

     

    Here is an example of a circuit and  HIIT

     

    Circuit. 15-20 reps 1 minute rest between sets. repeat for 20-30 minutes. (feel free to use the template and build your own)

    Upper: pushups

    Lower: Squats

    Core: Crunches

    Plyo: Burpees

    Upper: Clean and press or curl to press

    Lower: Alternating weighted lunges

    Core: Reverse crunches

    Plyo: Step ups 

     

    HIIT (can be done on almost any cardio machine)

    3 minute warmup

    -30 second sprint 

    -1 minute recovery

    *Repeat for 15 minutes to 30 minutes*

    3 minute cool down

    Top fat loss mistakes for cardio and weight training

    Cardio: Doing 1 speed with no resistance cardio. This kills me. Your fat burning potential begins and ends when you do. If it doesn't challenge you it will not change you. Atleast put the resistance on mountain or random. 

    Weight: Resting too long in between sets. Super sets are key here. Work one set while resting the other. Example of a superset is chest press and seated row together. Quad machine and ham machine. Pullup and shoulder press. 

    When you ramp up your metabolism you are going to have to eat more. Losing weight isn't about calories. Losing weight is about nutrient density.     Q: Hi, I am interested in your raw foods detox however, I am in the gym 6 days a week doing spinning, other cardio & weight training, will I be able to continue with my normal fitness routine during detox?

    Detoxing and fitness. 

    The best way to detox your body is to give it the tools and time necessary to clean house. There are many types of detoxes and many avenues for fitness. The best way to detox is to rest the body while giving it the cleanest foods and herbs. However, some light forms of exercise like yoga, swimming, jogging, pilates are acceptable because they are light and won't require the amount of nutrients to repair and replenish. A raw food detox is sublime and is one fantastic step towards a healthier body and mind. I encourage you to try it. 

    What I would do is scale back on the exercise for the length of the detox and have fun! Go hiking and enjoy nature. A light jog instead of a spin class. I guarantee you will not lose strength or endurance during the detox. Intense exercise increases the bodies need for nutrients and protein. 

    Imagine if you will you have a desk at work. And work keeps piling up and no matter how  you try to efficiently make it through you can't seem to get ahead. What detoxing is designed to do is give yourself the time to clean your desk. The most efficiently way for that to happen is to stop the work from coming in. Heavy exercise may increase your workload. You want your body to be in a cleaning mode and not a repair mode.

    Again I would continue exercises that are light and stimulating. You want increased blood flow and you want to aid you lymph system to pump efficiently. 

    Lastly, if you are training for an event it may not be the best time to detox. Detoxing symptoms can throw you off your game. Best time to detox is the off season.

    Q: I am a breast cancer survivor, before cancer I was healthy, active, my mind was clear, I never second guessed myself, my weight was good.     Q: Good morning. I tried the WEIGHT RELEASE CLEANSE AND REGIMEN and followed the diet. I must say that I am amazed at how good I feel. Energetic and focused but alas, I only lost 3 pounds in the 3 weeks. I am 5'5 and currently at 181 pounds. My body is extremely resistant to weight loss. I have done several different types of detox including the IZO juice cleanse in the last year and had not lost weight. I don't even seem to respond to a very low calorie diet. I do have elevated liver Enzyme levels and a recent blood test showed low B6 vitamin and not proper protein digestion. I exercise 3 times a week and I eat rather health and mostly organic.     This means that your body focused on another area that was of more importance than weight release. your mind wanted weight reduction but your body intelligence focused on something else. Go with the flow of the body intelligence and trust it. You apparently have an energetic block that prevents you from physically releasing weight (since you've tried other programs). Consider scheduling a consultation so we can get at the energetic/emotional root of your problem. Simply stop worrying about "losing" weight. Focus on what you desire (to see yourself in the size you desire). Don't focus on what you don't want (i.e. to lose weight).

    Q: I am very excited about your product and I wonder if there is help for me? and if so where should I start? I am 46 years old with a desire to be active but I am overweight by 70-80 pounds.     Q: Thank you so much for doing all that you do. I wish that you were in my everyday life...If I ever come to Cali, I hope to be able to take you up on some of your services. I have given your site out to many people that cross my paths...most recently, a man with diabetes who is going blind. Since I moved here, I have a problem with my ears...filling up with water or histimine or whatever...usually if I don't drink enough water near my menstrual cycle...I went to a doctor once and basically walked out of the office telling him what to do for his cold...yasee..he was no help...I knew more than him already....these past two years have been bad for allergies. Now, my ears and my throat...my nose too...though I do clean it out with water and that helps. I am not the only one. In the past two years there is a great number of people who say the same thing...they have never had a problem with allergies until these past two years.     Q: Hello Sir. I seek your recommendation for the following challenges I am facing. I tried "Colonix" cleansing system 1.5 years ago and the results were damaging. I had a bowel movement (BM) which I felt travel down my intestine like it was brillo. The result was a BM surrrounded with a thin coating of blood. I was shocked!!! I had always been fairly regular with my BM's 2-3x per day with occassional constipation during PMS time but since that "cleanse" I have been reduced to 1x a day maybe, hard as rocks and I am now a regular user of laxatives(which I do not like at all!!)
