6 Proven Health Benefits Of Manuka Honey

Have you ever picked up a small jar of honey, only to realize that it cost $30? If you experienced this phenomenon, then you encountered manuka honey, which is a luxury honey that comes from the manuka bush in New Zealand. From soothing sore throats and relieving digestive discomfort to reducing the risk of gingivitis and getting rid of acne, manuka honey is well worth the price tag.

Before we continue, we must detail that all honeys are not created equal. Honey isn’t what it used to be, and industrialization is to blame for this. To obtain the health benefits of honey, you must either purchase raw, organic unpasteurized honey or manuka honey.

What Makes Manuka Honey So Special?

As mentioned in the introductory paragraph, manuka honey is derived from one specific plant, but that’s not the reason why it is special. Manuka is rich in natural sugar and has a low pH level, which helps to get rid of bacterial growth. It also contains a diverse group of antioxidants that give manuka honey its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antibacterial properties. Additionally, manuka honey contains a chemical compound known as methyglyoxal (MGO), which has potent antibacterial activity.

Manuka honey is unique because it is an excellent source of enzymes, antioxidants, phenolic compounds, and vitamins. It also contains complex carbohydrates, alkaloids, flavonoids, trace minerals, B vitamins, and organic acids. You can find more about manuka honey and its health benefits below.

Health Benefits

Soothes Sore Throats:

The antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties of manuka honey work to attack the bacteria that cause irritation in the throat. In addition to fighting the bacteria, the honey also coats the lining of the throat to provide a soothing effect. Researchers found that manuka honey helped decrease the presence of Streptococcus mutans bacteria in head and neck cancer patients, who received chemotherapy treatment.

Promotes Oral Health:

To piggyback off the previous benefit, manuka honey may help to reduce the risk of periodontal disease and gingivitis. The antimicrobial properties of manuka honey were studied at the School of Dentistry at University of Otago in New Zealand. The results indicated that sucking on manuka honey reduced plaque by 35%, and reduced gum bleeding in people with gingivitis by 35%. The calcium, zinc, and phosphorus in manuka honey are also beneficial for maintaining healthy teeth.

Improves Digestive Health:

The natural antibiotic and antibacterial properties of manuka honey are beneficial for reducing bacterial overgrowth in the digestive tract. This is great news for people with low stomach acid, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), or acid reflux. Several studies have found that manuka’s bactericidal effects improve intestinal imbalances and promote stomach healing.

Treats Burns & Wounds:

Some over-the-counter bandages actually contain manuka honey, and the reason for this is because it provides pain relief for burns and moderate wounds. In 2007, the U.S. FDA approved manuka honey as an option for wound healing. The antimicrobial properties help to reduce the risk of infection and it helps to create a moist protective barrier for better healing. A two-week study examined a group of 40 people who applied manuka honey to non-healing wounds. Roughly 88% of the participants reported that their wounds decreased in size.

Helps Prevent Gastric Ulcers:

Stomach ulcers are very common sores that form in the lining of the stomach, and they cause digestive pain, bloating, and nausea. H. pylori is the most common bacteria that is responsible for the development of gastric ulcers. New research found that manuka honey may reduce the presence of gastric ulcers caused by H. pylori. In test tube studies, the antibacterial properties of manuka honey proved to be useful for reducing the size of ulcers, but more research needs to be done to support this study.

Gets Rid Of Acne:

As mentioned many times in this article, manuka honey has powerful antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. The combination of these, along with the low pH level, is beneficial for fighting acne. Manuka honey works to keep the skin free of bacteria, accelerating the healing time for people with acne. Additionally, the anti-inflammatory properties help to reduce the redness associated with acne.

  • Q: I'm a so-called diabetic, is it really okay to sweeten the tea with honey or maple syrup (these are no no's in the medical field!)? I'm not the best at swallowing pills-can I take the herbs out of the capsule and take it? I know this one sounds crazy, but I'm 32 and over a period of time, I have developed or formed rolls or dents on certain areas of my scalp. I guess it's hereditary-my father has them as well. I hate it! It's an eyesore to me. Is there anything natural for this? Lastly, could you say a prayer for me so that I may make a few wholesale deals (real estate) this month? I’m trying to create streams of income so that I may parolee' these monies into other things (i.e. health, prosperity, testimony to others).

    A:

I DON'T RECOMMEND HONEY. BUT MAPLE SYRUP IS OKAY. STEVIA IS EVEN BETTER! YOU SURE CAN! JUST WORK AT CONSTANTLY CLEANSING YOUR BODY, CHANGING YOUR DIET AND VISUALIZING HOW YOU DESIRE YOUR HEAD/BODY TO BE/APPEAR. SURE, I WILL SEND ENERGY YOUR WAY, BELOVED!

  • Q: Thanks for your article about vinegar. I was just going to use it regularly with honey. Can you use it on your skin though? I was wondering if the acidity would be good for wrinkles or acne.

    A:

Glad you enjoyed the "Vinegar" article. I don't recommend vinegar on the skin. However, a little inn bath water won't hurt (say about half a cup). I recommend Oz-Oil for the skin. Oxygen is what the skin needs.

  • Q: I am a 49 yr. old black female. When I was younger I had severe cystic acne that left me with what the dermatologist calls "ice pick scaring" and enlarged pores. I had 2 full face dermabrasions in my 30s and have been on retina A from then up until now. I have a pretty healthy diet and exercise routine. My Father and a couple of Uncles of mine also had the same type of skin problems, left with the same aftermath. I use French green clay masks which slightly reduce the look of the large pores and a sugar, honey, and lemon scrub (I make it at home) and I use it on my face. I'm not unattractive, but my skin looks rough and dull and pitted on my cheeks and nose. All the doctors talk about scar revision (cutting),laser treatments, chemical peels, and all sorts of invasive surgeries. I don't want to go that route again and I feel bad about the way I look sometimes. Are there ANY suggestions that you can give that will help me?

    A:

SKIN PROBLEMS ARE UNDERLYING BLOOD PROBLEMS. CLEANSE YOUR BLOOD, GIVE YOUR BODY NUTRITION. STEAM YOUR FACE. KEEP CLAYING YOUR FACE. IMPROVE UPON YOUR DIET GO ALL RAW FOODS OR VEGAN DIET). A GOOD ARTICLE TO READ IS â€SKIN RASH†ON OUR SITE UNDER ARTICLES.

  • Q: The reason I have chronic constipation is not because of diet, I eat very healthy, it is because of pain medication (narcotics), that I have to take to be able to stand the excruciating pain I am suffering from 5 spinal surgeries (I have metal rods in my spine from my shoulder blades to my tailbone). In order to have a regular bowel movement every day I take Glyco Lax (a dr.'s RX) 2x a day, plus what I call my "concoction" : I Tbs raw honey, 2 tsp. apple cider vinegar, 1 tsp. lemon juice, 1/3 cup fresh ground golden flaxseeds,? 1 tsp. Natural Psyllium Husk Fiber, and put all of that in hot purified water and drink it. I also take a stool softener with stimulant. That is a lot of time consuming work for me, but it does work. You offer several products for regularity, but I don't know which one to order. My Dr. says senna is very harsh and addictive, and your products seems to have a lot of senna in them. I was told it is not good for long term use. Please advise.

    A:

Senna is a 100% all-natural herb that is completely safe. It can be used for bowel movement stimulation, as the body recognizes and assimilates the herb without any side effects. All of our products can provide numerous health benefits.

  • Q: I'm doing the Full Body Cleanse and I have a few questions about it: I get tired of drinking just the distilled water and I'd like to drink the herbal teas, but I don't like it by itself. Would it mess things up to add a pack or two of Splenda to my tea or maybe honey? I can't stand the salads with the olive oil or apple cider vinegar or the lemon juice as dressing and it makes me gag. I have To have some sort of salad dressing. What kind would be suitable? Do I look for sugar-free? Or organic and natural? I found one that is organic and natural, but it has 3 grams of sugar in it. Without eating all my whole grained breads and other fiber, I haven't had much of a bowel movement in 3 days, should I wait a while yet? (I had surgery on my bowels and always had to take fiber tablets and eat lots of grains to get my bowels to move.) I haven't done the enemas yet, (low on money) should I try that? Or should I resume my fiber tablets I normally take? Any type of fiber I could add to my fruit smoothies in the morning? I want to also do the female cleanse. Is it ok to do that immediately after I finish the full body cleanse or should I wait for a little while? Thank you for all your help, I feel much better than I did before and I just started this detox a week ago, lost 10 pounds, too, woohoooooo! Thank you

    A:

    1. Instead of splenda, use agave, stevia, or grade b maple syrup as a sweetener.

    2. In re Salad Dressing, an organic and natural one is great. You can also check our website for salad dressing recipes.

    3. The fiber pills are not part of the cleanse, so we wouldn't advise those. Fruit is you best choice of fiber so look into eating more papaya, mango, figs, etc. And yes, colonics (and enemas) would greatly help you - undoubtedly!

    4. You can do the Female Cleanse right after you finish detoxing. There's no need to wait!

  • Q: I was reading your article about vinegar being harmful to the body because of its acids and I was curious to know what you think of the Organic unpasturized, unfiltered apple cider vinegar with mother? I saw that at the end of the article it stated that "if you must" use vinegar to use the organic apple cider vinegar but, I have read many places that it has many health benefits such as reducing bad cholesterol, regulating blood pressure, eliminating toxic waste from the body, fighting fungal and bacterial infections, helping relieve joint pains, breaking down fat which helps in natural weight reduction.

I have come completely off of the acne medications I've been prescribed and over the counter medicines (i.e., Proactive) and gone the natural route. I first started by changing my diet and followed that with the Full Body Detox. I purchased the olive oil and Shea butter soap and Oz Oil and use this daily. In addition, I use Bentonite clay twice weekly and steam 3-5x a week followed by hydrogen peroxide. I have two questions, will this alone regenerate the scar tissue? And will this also be effective for hyper pigmentation?

    A:

What you are using now will greatly help your condition (as well as hyper-pigmentation). Just keep doing what you're doing and just know that with Nature patience is required.

  • Q: I am a 29 year old African American female. I would like to tell you my story and get your advice. Before Sept. 28, 2008 I was a healthy fun loving female but after sept. 28th my health has not been the same. I wake up in the morning weak with nausea and headaches. I went to Kaiser and they said I had a virus and I had to let it take its course. I work with kids and it was hard for me to go back to work because 1. I kept getting sick. 2. My boss was mad that I was sick and not able to work. So I went back to Kaiser and then they said I was sick and had a virus with a mix of anxiety(due to my boss going crazy on me). They said I need to rest and stop being anxious, so I can heal.(well the anxiety is gone) Next I started to get sharp pains in my stomach area(which I have had before on and off for the past couple of years but it would only happen like once or twice a year) but I was scared because the pains we're very sharp and happening like two weeks apart. So Kaiser told me to go see a Upper GI Dr. I went to see one and had an endoscopy done and they found a yeast infection in my throat and that also my esophagus was irritated to but my stomach looked fine. So they put me on Prontiox (for the irritated esophagus and Difucan (for the yeast infection). Well as soon as I finished the medication for the yeast infection in my esophagus, I lost my voice and could not talk for 4-5 days and I still have the stomach pains. So the Upper GI dr. told me the sore throat and losing my voice was a side effect to GERD and that is what I may have. So he asked to up the dose of the Prontiox (so now I am taking 80 mg instead of 40 mg a day). But guess what still having stomach pains and my voice still goes in and out and it feels like something is stuck in my throat and now when I eat, I feel food get stuck in my chest like right in the middle of my breast. So what is going on with me...they have done blood work on me from blood count to checking me for STD's (even HIV) and everything came back normal/negative. And they keep saying all my blood work is healthy...So what is going on and what can I take, because I am a natural person and my system is sensitive to a lot of stuff and I don’t like being on these medications. And now the DRs may think I have IBS..Oh boy Help!! And oh yeah I have had very bad cramps when I have my period and take Motrin and I would like to know is there anything I can take that is sensitive to my stomach... HELP

  • Q: I see a lot of your tea formulas if not all of them are also offered in pill form. Which is recommended the tea or the pill? Also I am pretty sure I have a bacterial infection of some sort. I have been to 2 different doctors neither one of them actually ran any test to find out what the infection was. They really didn’t even listen to me at all when I went there. Actually I told them flat out what tests I wanted done and they still didn’t do them. Now I remember why I hate traditional doctors. One doctor took an x-ray and told me I have a whole lot of bacteria in my ingestions what an x-ray shows there I don’t know because even if it appears cloudy bacteria is SUPPOSE to be there anyway. I already knew I had a problem bacteria there as I am having mucus in my stools. He just gave me an antibotic and that was it. either way his 3 day antibiotic didn’t work and I felt ripped off paying a copay for 3 pills. So I have a question about a recommendation here. I know for sure the bacteria is affecting my intestines as the mucus in my stool. I don’t know where else it has worked into but I am thinking it’s starting to effect my eyes some as well as I have noticed they appear much more watery than normal and looks like they get a discharge from them and they are much more red than normal. Regardless to what the doctor says I don’t have allergies. I know my body much better than he does I have never had allergy problems in the past so I don’t think its caused from that. so what products should I be looking at? and are the teas or pills recommended?

    A:

Capsules are more potent than teas but teas get into the body faster. So you can choose what you're looking for. Both capsules and teas work however! For bacterial infection: First perform the FULL BODY DETOX and follow that up with the 10-DAY SUPREME COLON CLEANSE. Change your diet: raw foods (75%) and vegan (25%). Drink plenty of vegetable juice. Drink Dherbs MUCUS BUSTER TEA daily (1-2 cups) p.s. - Don't hate traditional doctors! It's negative energy. Read my article â€LEAVE MEDICAL DOCTORS ALONEâ€.

  • Q: I have been diagnosed with Prostatitis. I have been talking anti-biotics to treat the bacteria. Other than the symptoms of pelvic pain and clear bacteria presence, I have been having issues with erection and libido. I was put on a antibiotics for 3 months. My question is after I am done with the antibiotics I would like to use herbs for continual treatment. I think it would be a good idea to detox after my treatment but what would you recommend for the sex drive and erection issue? In one of your articles you said " Would you believe that most cases of penile erectile dysfunction are due to Clogged Arteries, and Poor Blood CIRCULATION?" I am in agreement with that statement. How does this factor in with my case of prostatitis since I am having some erection, sex drive issues?

    A:

Antibiotics for prostatitis? Not helping the problem! I urge you to read our "Male Prostate" article in our articles section. Don't even worry about the sex drive. Your body is talking to you about a disease and you're concerned with erection. Refrain from sex, and concentrate on healing. Get your mind right! Focus on optimal health and well-being. Please check out our Mental Science Manual (visit e-books section). Think about performing the Full Body Detox followed by the Total Male Cleanse, at least for starters in correcting this problem.

  • Q: Hi, I have been suffering from a dull pain the testicular area for over 2 years now. I have seen 2 urologists that have confirmed that I have enterococcus bacteria in either the prostate of genital area based on semen culture. I have also done testicle ultrasound and CAT scan of the area with good results. One of the urologist said that I have an inflamed prostate (prostitis) there was some varicose veins when ultra sound was done but the urologist continues to give me long term antibiotics. Some my symptoms have been dull pain in the testicular area when I need to have a bowel movement. low energy, moody, memory loss, irritable, confused, brain fog etc. I use to have a health sex drive but now my sex drive is really low. A bit of erectile dysfunction but I think that comes more from having the pain all the time and anxiety. I don't know if this is possible but my penis seems to have reduced in size when erect. The doctor ask me to try some cialis for the ED which I did for a short while but decided I needed something natural because of the long term problems of using those medications. I have had long periods of stress from a bitter business relationship about 2 years ago. My concern is that every time I go to the urologist all they want to do it give me antibiotics and that doesn't seem to be working. I am concern of the other organ damage caused by taking long term antibiotics. Is there an alternative you recommend? I have been looking at your Anti- virus treatment. I am 30 years old.
