5 Common Chemicals That Are Making You Fat & Depressed

0-205529772-fotolia-68299318-subscription-monthly-m

We’ve all heard that if we eat too many calories, we’ll get fat. But there’s more to it: it’s not just the calories, but the chemicals, in our food that contribute to obesity.

Some of these chemicals — called “obesogens” — trigger our bodies to store fat even though we might be restricting calories. The effects are complex: some of these chemicals increase the number of fat cells, others expand the size of fat cells and still others influence appetite, cravings, fullness and how well the body burns calories. In addition to obesogens, other synthetic food ingredients have been shown to help us pack on the pounds and leave us feeling depressed, even when when we think we’re eating healthy.

To stop feeling that way, here are the top five chemicals to avoid in food.

1. Growth Hormones & Antibiotics

Several drugs, growth hormones, steroids and antibiotics are routinely given to conventionally raised animals to fatten them up on less food. Residues from some of these drugs have been found in meat samples, so you very well could be eating these growth-promoting drugs every time you eat a steak. These drugs are believed to contribute to the obesity epidemic and are poorly regulated in the U.S.

How to avoid: Choose only certified organic grass-fed meat and dairy products (preferably local). Treatment with growth hormones and growth-promoting antibiotics isn’t permitted in organically grown animals. As an added benefit, organic grass-fed beef has been shown to contain more conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which may actually help you lose weight.

2. Artificial & Natural Flavors

All of the chemicals that make processed food taste good — monosodium glutamate (MSG), artificial flavors and natural flavors — are just cheap replacements for the real thing and can cause you to eat more than you would otherwise.

With the innocuous-sounding term “natural flavors,” companies can put whatever they want in your food that’s generally recognized as safe, including naturally occurring glutamate bi-products like MSG, known excitotoxins. These excitotoxins cause your taste buds to experience irresistibility when it comes to food.

How to avoid: Steer clear of processed foods, particularly those that have artificial flavors, natural flavors, monosodium glutamate or other “processed free glutamic acid” additives like autolyzed yeast extract and hydrolyzed proteins.

3. Artificial Sweeteners

Think you’re going to lose weight by switching from regular soda to diet? Think again. Researchers have discovered that artificial sweeteners like those in Diet Coke, can affect gut bacteria, leading to more weight gain. If that isn’t bad enough, the artificial sweetener Aspartame has been linked to mood swings and depression.

How to avoid: Don’t eat anything with artificial sweeteners (sucralose, aspartame, acesulfame potassium, saccharin) in the ingredient list. Limit your sugar intake overall, but choose unrefined sweeteners such as coconut palm sugar, maple syrup, raw honey and dried fruits such as dates.

4. Pesticides

Out of all the common pesticides Americans are regularly exposed to, the majority of them are “endocrine disruptors”, making them obesogens. Even in tiny amounts, endocrine disruptors have the ability to disrupt major weight controlling hormones (catecholamines), interfere with the natural hormone systems that regulate metabolism and lead to weight gain.

How to avoid: Minimize your exposure to pesticides by choosing certified organic produce and products. (Synthetic pesticides are prohibited in organic farming.) If organic isn’t available, choose fresh produce that’s on the Environmental Working Group’s “Clean 15” list of produce with the least pesticide residue.

5. Plastics

Whether it’s a bottle of salad dressing or container of leftovers, most of us are exposed to plastics on a daily basis. Many of these plastics contain substances such as phthalates or bisphenol A (BPA), known endocrine disruptors that have been directly linked to increased fat storage. These chemicals have the ability to leach into food and have infiltrated our society so much that they’ve been found 93% of urine samples tested in America.

How to avoid: Choose your water bottles, storage containers, straws and eating utensils wisely, and stock up on those made from glass or stainless steel instead of plastic. Glass jars make an affordable option for storing food.

Q: What Are Some Natural Sweet Treats (Junk Foods) I can Consume? Under free will you can consume what you like, but healthier products are best. You will find plenty of "healthier" snack, treat, and junk foods at good health food stores such as Whole Foods Market, PCC Natural Food Stores, Erewhon, Trader Joes, Natural Grocers, New Frontiers, etc. Just make sure to abstain from salt, sugar, and other harmful chemicals in the products you buy. Q: I am in need of cleansing my body and weight removal! (Removal and not loss because I don't want to find it again)! I need to remove about 80 pounds of unhealthy weight from my body and would like to do so in a natural way. I looked at both your Female Cleanse and the Full Body Cleanse, but don't know which is a better option for me to follow right now? I eat a lot of organic foods, I juice (some) but need to increase my water intake (A LOT). I don't drink much soda at all and when I do it is organic carbonated lemonade. I realize carbonated drinks are not good for us and limit how much I drink. My body lets me know when I have eaten something that is not good for me by causing my hands and feet to swell. To reduce this I drink water. I am allergic to wheat and try to stay away from it as much as possible. I have few ailments and have started working out again (cardio and weight training). I also looked at your weight loss products, but thought I should maybe detox first. What do you think? Any assistance you can offer on your products and which ones I should take is of great appreciation.

A: The best thing for you is the Full Body Cleanse. The Full Body Cleanse will allow you to remove unwanted weight, while also optimizing your entier body so that you can maintain that weight and live a healthier lifestyle.

Q: I have been battling endometriosis for several decades now and I hadn’t really found relief until I began educating myself and prescribing my own remedies…. conventional medicine seemed to be unable to help, save for surgery which only helped for a few months. I have recently experienced relief after learning to (avoid estrogenic foods, get rid of chemicals (perfumes, cleaning agents, sprays…), discontinuing relaxers and cosmetics, using natural deodorants, eating organic, eating raw foods, taking kosher supplements/vitamins that are bio-ready, refraining from sugar, drinking water, and so on…) …after a LOT of research and trial and error, I am beginning to feel better, though the progress comes at very slow intervals. My question to you is…how might I help the body clean the endometrial debris that may have attached itself in various places in the uterine area?

Q: I want to start the raw food diet, but do not want to lose weight has i am under weight already. I need tips to gain or at least maintain my weight. I do lift weights as part of my exercise routine.

    A:

    Thanks for the question,

Losing "weight" on a raw foods diet is a definite probability. But the weight might be excess fat and water retention due to detoxing. By weight I am assuming you are talking about muscle. It is not that complicated to keep muscle while on a raw food diet. The Vegan Effect diet program I created is 60-90 percent raw. Raw before dinner if that helps. I allow myself one cooked meal a day. For the most part the diet is a Low fat/high carb/high fruit/high alkaline diet.

The most important thing to remember is getting enough calories. My athletes (including raw body builders) typically eat 1000 calories of fruit for breakfast in the form of a green smoothie. Usually post workout. You need to eat roughly 3000 calories to maintain or grow muscle mass. Some of my mass building athletes eat as much as 5000 calories. Albeit at a higher fat ratio than our standard 70/10/20 carb/fat/protein ratios.

Please refer to my blog on building muscle ona vegan diet found here: http://the-vegan-effect.healthcoach1.integrativenutrition.com/blog/2012/05/building-muscle-on-vegan-diet

There is a raw organic food bar with 22 grams of protien that can be found here http://www.organicfoodbar.com/products/. *Note: I am not affiliated with them nor do I sell any supplements*. It is however a great bridge to meals.

Besides getting enough calories make sure you are getting around 20 grams of protein 5 times a day to maintain muscle mass. Sprouting beans, nut butters, seeds, and nuts help.

I run a 6 month online health coahcing program that includes lessons on sports nutrition and include a individualized fitness plan. I am currently running a ridiculous half off special to fill spots. If you are interested visit www.theveganeffect.com and contact me there.

Q: Hi, I'm a 36 year old African/American woman with 4 children whose been trying to lose weight off and on for the past 16 years. I lose the weight but then I gain it right back after I go off of my diet. I know that I need a good body/colon cleanse, but what I need to learn how to do is to eat the right food's to keep my body healthy. I've been conditioned to eat the foods that I do eat, I need to know how do I go about "de-programming" myself from the bad food's and program myself to want and crave the healthy one's? I'm open to any suggestion's you have, even using crystals and meditation. Thank you.

    A:

Time is limited here in "Ask the Herbalist" so I humbly request you consider a full length health consultation. However, I can tell you that you'd greatly benefit from a FULL BODY DETOX Cleanse.

Q: I just completed the Full Body Cleanse about two weeks ago and started the Pancreas Formula for my pancreas... I don?t have the money for the full kit but after the Full Body Cleanse I?ve notice my blood averaging +-200.....it had reached a low of 124 during detox. I bought cromium and have used it since the onset of detox at about 1200 mcg per day! My Pancreas is a piece of crap!!!!! I haven?t had ANY thing with added sugar or artificial, just green tea with stevia to sweeten it. NO Treats! The only regular food I get now is like lean cuisine type once or twice a day with fresh vegetables or fresh made Veg juice....I had went from 327lbs to 289lbs during detox but since I?ve went back up settling at about 296 and stable. I have cut everything I love out of my life! No Sugar, No Milk Products. About 6 ounces of meat A WEEK eat mostly live vegetables yet I see a Pancreas that needs to be punished for ruining my life!!!!! I try to help it and this is what it does for me! I don?t know what to do next.

    A:

If you can't afford the full kit or kits, order and drink some of our Herbal Teas to help maintain the pancreas in its normal healthy secretion. Cinnamon Tea can also provide additional benefits.

We also recommend a daily pancreas regimen of: Pancreas Aid, Pancreas Formula, and Sugar Control.

Your vegetable juice should consist of GREEN BEAN (Snap pea) and/or BRUSSEL SPROUTS, to help maintain pancreatic health.

Q: I'm doing the Full Body Cleanse and I have a few questions about it: I get tired of drinking just the distilled water and I'd like to drink the herbal teas, but I don't like it by itself. Would it mess things up to add a pack or two of Splenda to my tea or maybe honey? I can't stand the salads with the olive oil or apple cider vinegar or the lemon juice as dressing and it makes me gag. I have To have some sort of salad dressing. What kind would be suitable? Do I look for sugar-free? Or organic and natural? I found one that is organic and natural, but it has 3 grams of sugar in it. Without eating all my whole grained breads and other fiber, I haven't had much of a bowel movement in 3 days, should I wait a while yet? (I had surgery on my bowels and always had to take fiber tablets and eat lots of grains to get my bowels to move.) I haven't done the enemas yet, (low on money) should I try that? Or should I resume my fiber tablets I normally take? Any type of fiber I could add to my fruit smoothies in the morning? I want to also do the female cleanse. Is it ok to do that immediately after I finish the full body cleanse or should I wait for a little while? Thank you for all your help, I feel much better than I did before and I just started this detox a week ago, lost 10 pounds, too, woohoooooo! Thank you

    A:

    1. Instead of splenda, use agave, stevia, or grade b maple syrup as a sweetener.

    2. In re Salad Dressing, an organic and natural one is great. You can also check our website for salad dressing recipes.

    3. The fiber pills are not part of the cleanse, so we wouldn't advise those. Fruit is you best choice of fiber so look into eating more papaya, mango, figs, etc. And yes, colonics (and enemas) would greatly help you - undoubtedly!

    4. You can do the Female Cleanse right after you finish detoxing. There's no need to wait!

Q: Hello I am currently on the full body detox and I have a question for you. How do you feel about organic chicken from a credited organic food store? I was wondering if eating organic steamed chicken was ok and whats your take on almond milk.

    A:

    Thanks for the question.

Animal products are not part of the detox program. The detox protocol is a raw food detox as well. Most if not all food should be consumed raw. Organic meat is a double edged sword. On one hand you have an animal pumped full of anti biotics and on the other hand you have an animal refused antibiotics if they are sick. Which they routinely are being that they are crammed in sheds. The amount of land required by the USDA to be considered free range is the size of a sheet of printer paper. Birds kept in such close quarters communicate diseases fast. I do not recommend any animal products when on a detox.

The main issue with detoxing is lessening the workload of the livers and kidneys so they can clean house. Animal protien is acidic to the body and forces the body to work overtime digesting the excess protein.

Almond milk is fine if you make it yourself. Its really not that hard to do if you have a good blender. If you can't blend it yourself you can buy it from the store but remember that it's pasteurized and probably has added sugars which you want to avoid.

Here is a quick web resource but I am sure you could find others

Q: Is sea salt and warm water a good natural laxative? If so how often do you recommend the use of sea salt for elimination? I was reading The Master Cleanser by Stanley Burroughs and it gives this recommendation, along with drinking lemon water mixed with organic syrup and cayenne pepper. Is it safe to give myself an enema 2xs per day using a hot water bottle filled with fresh squeezed organic lemon and distilled water? Asking this because Bzod had me to listen to 88.3 today here in Cincinnati and the guy (Mike) was telling how he does this regularly and has great results.

    A:

Yes, sea salt in water is a mild laxative!

You can do it as often as you FEEL the need to drink or take it.

You can also consume the Master Cleanse (cayenne, maple syrup, lemon juice) if you choose. You can drink this as much as you like depending on how you feel.

And yes, you can perform enemas 2X a day! Enemas are very helpful for health!

Q: I wrote to you a couple weeks ago asking if it was normal for me to have an outbreak only a day or two into the full body cleanse kit. You wrote back and told me that an outbreak is the body healing. It is two weeks later and I am still having an outbreak! Is this a good sign? Do you think this outbreak may continue on through my anti viral kit? I have been eating mostly fruits and vegetables, however I felt like I needed more substance and I was not enjoying my food at all... so I bought organic noodles and organic tomato sauce (sea salt only, tomatoes, no sugar, you get the point). Is adding some of this into my diet going to make the kits less effective or possibly not work?

    A:

The outbreak is a result of your body trying to eliminate the toxicity and impurities from your body. Continue to follow the guidelines of the Cleanse.

In regards to what you ate, YES, they make the cleanse less effective, so you may not want to eat much of cooked foods. Raw foods will optimize the cleanse. If you are having trouble staying full, try more healthy fats, like avocado, coconut cream, or raw nuts and seeds.

Q: Thank you for your responds to my letter. The reason why I want to gain weight is for a health reason not for looks. Society has nothing to do with me gaining weight. I'm 5'11 1/2" almost 6' and my weight is 137 lbs. Now to me I'm underweight for what I used to weight in my 20s. I was 150-160 lbs then but as I'd reached my 30s and having a lot of stress weigh down on me my eating habit as well my weight decrease to 120 - 130 lbs. So as you can see I had lost about 30-40 lbs. So yes I want to gain my weight so I can be happy and healthy. I understand that "gaining weight is gaining waste" if you are doing for the society or physical appearance. But that's not what I'm looking for, I'm doing it for my health. So if there a way for me to put the weight on; do you have a suggestion. I will appreciate it if not then thank you for taking the time to read my letters.

    A:

THE BEST WAY TO PUT THE WEIGHT BACK ON IS VIA EXERCISING (WEIGHT LIFTING), PERFORMING VISUALIZATION TECHNIQUES (SEEING YOURSELF WITH THE WEIGHT ON YOU) AND PERHAPS OVEREATING GOOD VEGAN FOOD

Q: I am on my 3rd day of the fully body cleansing. I am definitely doing this to lose weight. I am a 52 year old, black, Christian, wife, mother to 21 and 14 year old girls, legal secretary who is 450 lbs. I am to the point now where if I don't do this I'm going to be housebound. I can barely move some days that is why I started this because I feel so unhealthy. I have a question about the nuts. I got all gun-ho and ordered $135.00 worth of organic nuts from nuts.com. I got raisins, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, walnuts, pecans, pistachios and cashews and mixed them all up together (well I purchased 2 lbs of each but I only mixed up 1 lb of each together). Anyway, I was reading about how much calories are in nuts. Should I not pay attention to that because I was consuming a lot of calories in the first place or do I have to watch how many nuts I eat? I have put some nuts in a sandwich bags and basically filled it up and that is supposed to be my nuts ration for the day. I am also eating fruits and vegetables. So far the fruit have been grapes, grapefruit, red apples, pears, green apples and bananas. The vegetables have all been in a salad: tomatoes, celery spinach leaves, carrots, mixed in balsamic vinaigrette. I only ate the salad Monday night all the other times I have just eaten the fruit and nuts. I am also consuming approximately 75-100 oz of water. Sorry I’m long winded I just wanted you to get the entire picture.

    A:

Thanks for the question, I can definitely help you.

I am currently writing an eBook for www.dherbs.com called "Losing weight the healthy way." I have been a weight loss counselor for many years. I am also a health coach, personal trainer, bodymind nutritionist, and a vegan lifestyle coach.

When it comes to weight loss most programs want you to lose weight to get healthy. My mindset is to get healthy and lose weight.

In my health/fitness/nutrition coaching program www.theveganeffect.com I use a lowfat/high carb/ high raw/ nutrient dense/ high alkaline diet to achieve long term weight loss success. So far I am 100 percent in getting clients long lasting weight loss. If you are interested in my program please fill out the health history form on the side of the web page. We could have a free 1 hour initial consultation over skype to see how I can best help you.

Nuts are best kept to a minimum if you use them at all. Nuts are extremely high in fat and have the opposite omega 3- omega 6 ratio that is optimal for health. Seeds are best as far as ratios are concerned. Also nuts are truly easy to over eat and cause your nutrient ratios to be off.

A healthy vegan diet is a high raw fruitarian diet.

    Example:

Breakfast: green smoothie. (500-1000 calories of fruits blended with a handful of greens and water)

Bridge: Dates and strawberries (500 calories)

Lunch: Salad with low sugar fruits (cucumber, tomato, squash, bell peppers) topped with fruit, beans, psuedo grains,

    Bridge: 2-3 apples

Dinner: Raw wraps (collard greens) with low sugar fruit and tahini

    Snack: Sorbet

    Hope this helps

Q: I recently completed the Full Body Detox, which I loved. Now, 2 months later, I am very interested in the weight release program. Last year, I lost 40 lbs in 8 months, in the most healthy way (good nutrition and exercise). This year, I slowly started gaining weight back, and 1 year later, I continue to gain weight much more quickly. I am still working out regularly, and eating well. Would you recommend the Weight Release Kit? I am looking to take off 20 lbs at the most. Is that realistic for this formula? However, I want to build muscle and strength as well. Can I maintain the results of the program with the directed nutrition plan, and add white meat for protein (chicken, turkey, tuna). I am also wondering if the formulas simply release excess weight, or can I expect to lose inches and lower my body fat percentage? Thanks for your time and dedication to natural health!

    A:

Glad to hear about your success with the Full Body Detox!

I would highly recommend the Weight Release Kit and Regimen. NO MEAT though! Try vegan alternatives if you must have something - but no meats!

You will release weight (waste)! Your weight is nothing but waste!

Q: Thank you for always answering my questions. I have about two more. Okay, I'm currently living overseas where I'm limited on raw fresh foods (vegetables and fruits). I want to do the detox but I'm concerned that I won't have everything as far as raw food to be successful. I have access to basics (apples, oranges, bananas, tomatoes, avocados, melons, lettuce, cabbage, bean spouts, carrots, celery, peppers, green beans, peas, bagged nuts,) but nothing exotic by any means. Then I was told to safely eat some of the food in the local economy that we should wash it with a 5% bleach solution (is that safe...and if on the detox I'm thinking that would be a no go). Two questions?Given the mentioned availability of raw foods could I be able to successfully complete the detox (I don't have an issue with eating the same things over and over again) and two what can I do to clean local produce so that its safe for consumption? Apparently part of the issue is that they use human feces to fertilize. Thank you for your time and I look forward to your response

    A:

Yes, it seems you have enough raw food available to you to complete the cleanse.

In order to clean local produce, rinse thoroughly with apple cider vinegar to "disinfect" it. If apple cider vinegar is unavailable, just use water.

Q: Greetings! Is it OK to take the Fertility Cleanse and Fibroid Buster Cleanse at the same time? You mention that dairy products are not good for the body due to the hormonal chemicals. Is organic milk OK? Lastly, do you offer discounts for multiple product purchases and combined shipping? The two products I am interested in are very pricey $199 & $135. If you have any sales or discounts available I would be very grateful!!

    A:

We don't advise taking 2 cleanses together (too many capsules to consume)! Perform one at a time! If you order all at once we can give you a 10% discount (but you'll have to call in your order when you are ready to order). Organic milk is just as bad as regular milk!

After your cleanses, your daily regimen should consist of: Thyroid Formula, Electric Greens, Weight Loss (Release) Formula, Bowel Mover, and HYPERLINK "http://www.dherbs.com/store/rainforest-tonic-tea-p-289.html" Rainforest tea.

No drugs will really help your condition. I don't recommend medication but it's your choice in the end!

For pain, we have a Headache and Pain (Bio-salicin) formula which works well with MSM Sulfur (of which you need to take 9-15 capsules per day, maybe 3-5 capsules three times a day).
