One constant in life is change: the seasons will change, our jobs will change, our relationships will change, and our circumstances will change. If we know change is inevitable, then why do we get so bent out of shape when it happens?

One reason change bothers us is that we hold on to our past mistakes. Instead of focusing on what is going well, we focus on what isn’t working in our lives or what’s gone wrong in our past. We need to realize that holding on to past failures and letting our mistakes get the best of us can actually hold us back from reaching our full potential.

On the path to happiness and making your dreams come true, it is important to reframe your view of mistakes. Mistakes aren’t always bad, and learning how to make the most of them can help you feel more positive.

Reframing your view of mistakes is easier than you may think. These five steps can help.

1. There are no mistakes, only lessons.

Every mistake we make in life is an opportunity to grow and learn. If you look at life as a giant classroom, mistakes are the assignments that lead to learning opportunities. Through your mistakes you learn what you value, what you like, what you don’t want, and what you don’t need. Mistakes are the fertile ground from which new opportunities grow.

2. We grow through our mistakes.

Although mistakes can feel painful and frustrating, they can help us grow. Mistakes are only truly harmful if we keep repeating them. If you look at each situation and ask, “What can I learn here?” you’ll grow and learn so you can take additional steps on your road to happiness.

3. Your mistakes do not define you.

The World Health Organization estimates that about 350 million people worldwide have some form of depression; much of the depression is tied to regrets and mistakes. Recognize that your mistakes do not represent all of who you are, nor do they define you as a person. You’re much more than your situation, your problems or your past mistakes.

4. The biggest mistake you can make is being afraid to make one.

One of the most common things that holds people back is being afraid to act or move toward their dream because of a fear of failure. Ask yourself if you’re procrastinating, making excuses, or waiting to act on your goals. Perhaps a key part of your underlying fear is worrying that you’ll make a mistake. Remember that mistakes are proof that you’re trying, and that without mistakes you’re not growing. Enjoy the journey — including the trials and tribulations. 

5. Mistakes lead to breakthroughs.

Before Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, a journalist asked him if he felt like a failure. He said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Looking at mistakes as failures will prevent you from reaching your goals. If you find you keep making mistakes, recognize that you’re closer than you think to a breakthrough. Whether you’re inventing something, changing jobs or careers, or looking to change your relationship patterns, mistakes will lead to breakthroughs. The more mistakes you make, the bigger the breakthrough that awaits you.

Now that’s something to smile about.

    Q: As a diet controlled diabetic I question being able to change my diet(to raw/live foods) while I keep up the same rigorous exercise and fitness program without suffering from too many low readings of which I am prone.The program has gotten me off insulin.I also have diverticulitis and seeds and nuts have been a problem for me in the past. Any suggestions?

    Thanks for the question. I hope this helps. If you are under a doctors supervision I am forbidden to give you any advice that may alter a doctors advice. They have little to no nutritional training but their word trumps everyone. 

    What I can do is point you in the direction of programs getting the results you desire. Those three are Dr. Neil M. Barnards "program for preventing and reversing diabetes" (DVD,book), Dr. Gabriel Cousins "Raw in 30" program (DVD) and "There is a cure for diabetes" (book), and recently The Gerson Therapy has released a program for diabetes (book). 

    The common denominator in all three programs is a low fat vegan diet. The differences are that Barnard's program is a cooked vegan diet while Cousins' and Gerson's program are raw. All get results but the raw programs have a 75 percent success rate in 1 month where as the cooked version of Barnards get results in 6 months. Big difference.

    I have gotten people off of insulin in around 2 months using a high raw and low fat vegan diet. I use no oils and nuts. I do encourage avocados and seeds for fats. However, with diverticulitis you must avoid seeds until your body repairs itself through a high alkaline diet. I suggest getting a bulk of your fats from avocados and coconut. I usually limit myself to a half an avocados worth of fat a day. 

    I would look into those books first and if you are under a doctors supervision bring those materials to him/her and see what they say.

    Q: Hi, I am currently on the Anti-Viral Cleanse and I can feel that it is working. Mainly I am noticing I'm having dreams of past experiences which have emotional trauma which I have associated with having herpes. These are really intense and I know they are the herbs working as these are memories I have tried to repress for years. Is there anything you recommend to help shift this stored energy?     Sometimes your emotions does affect the healing process. You can try using some of the Elixirs to help clear out your emotions of the past like the Aura Cleansing Elixir or the Anti-Negative Thoughts Elixir. You can also try the Aromatherapy Inhalers. If it's still the same day you that you forget to take one of the formula's you can still take it at a later time.

    If you forget and it's the day after just continue on without it or add an extra day to the cleanse. Taking them out of order doesn't have an effect on your cleanse as long as you're still taking the supplements daily. The schedule can be adjusted according to you personal time, just be sure that the hours in between are the same as listed in the manual. It is significant to follow the regiment exactly.

    Q: I've made a lifestyle change about 8 months ago. I excluded all dairy, wheat, grains, gluten, legumes, sugar, oils (except olive oil). I still eat minimum amount of meat (chicken, fish) maybe 2 -3 times/wk. I'm slowly trying to eliminate meat totally as I only use to make my meals more filling.     Q: I have experienced dramatic hair loss in the last 7 months. The Dr.'s says it's stress. I have since eliminated stress, started working out, detoxing (ionic foot bath), and eliminating the bad foods. I have been known to eat excessively in the past.     Q: My question is I use to have a very caramel complexion or fair complexion when I was in West Africa. Ghana. But when I move USA out here over the course of the years my complexion has change drastically from fair to totally dark. Do you know why this happen? And what can I do to retain my color back.     Q: My biggest concern is how to proceed once pregnancy happens. Getting pregnant isn't my problem it's the getting past week 21. So, how do you feel about cervical cerclage? I have such mixed feelings. I can see the comfort in having it done, but the idea of it terrifies me. My cervix should be able to hold my baby on it's own! I've talked to my local birthing centers, and most of them won't touch me, given my history until week 36 when the cerclage would be removed. They have all suggested I have the procedure done.
