5 Tips To Detoxify Your Life, Starting Today


As consumers, we’re becoming increasingly concerned with the chemicals in our everyday products like sunscreen, hand cream, and even our food. One startling fact is that of the 84,000 chemicals on shelves today, only about 1% have been studied for safety, and even those have not been studied for how they react together.

The good news is, many of these products marketed to us by big business are actually very easy to forgo, or to make ourselves – safely.

Here are five easy ways to reduce your toxic load, starting today:

1. Stop using so much sunscreen!

Avoid having to use as much sunscreen by using long sleeve, loose cotton shirts, broad brim hats, and generally avoiding being the in sun between 10am and 3pm during the warmer months.

And when you do opt for SPF, use safer sunscreens without nano-particles, oxybenzone, octyl methoxycinnamate or retinyl palmitate. Generally use mineral sunscreens (look for ingredients like “zinc cream”) over chemical ones.

Remember that you actually need Vitamin D, so spend some time outside with short sleeves and no sunscreen before 10am. Dr Sarah Lanzt, author of Chemical Free Kids, says her family motto is “Get sun, not too much, don’t get red.”

2. Start making your own non-toxic cosmetics, in order to avoid these eight deadly chemicals.

An easy place to start is lip balm: the basic recipe is one part bees wax to one part liquid oil, such as jojoba or olive oil, by weight. Place together in a glass jar, and put the jar in a saucepan of water over a low heat. Beeswax is a beast to clean off afterwards, so I prefer the jar to using a double boiler.

You can experiment by adding more or less oil, depending upon how firm you like your balm, and by using a mix of coconut oil, shea or cacao butter. If your balm comes out too hard or soft for your liking, remelt it and start again!

Here are five more beauty products to make from coconut oil, and a list of safer choices to buy.

3. Make your own non-toxic cleaners.

You can make just about anything you need to clean your house from a few simple household ingredients, like baking soda, vinegar, super washing soda and soap.

Laundry: Make your own laundry powder by mixing equal parts super washing soda and grated soap, and using about ¼ cup per load of laundry. Add some borax or oxi-clean for heavy duty loads. Use ½ cup white vinegar in the rinse for a fabric softener, especially if you have hard water.

Kitchen: Make this all purpose spray cleaner by soaking your left over citrus peel in white vinegar for a couple of weeks, then decanting into a spray bottle (strain well first). Dilute with 50% distilled water, and add a tsp of dish soap for extra power.

4. Only eat real food.

So much of our food is now processed and full of additives, that it can be overwhelming to know what to eat and what to avoid.

If you are new to eating “real” foods, start by reading food labels in the supermarket and just avoid ingredients you can’t pronounce or that are identified only by numbers. Try to move towards eating more “real” foods, but don’t be discouraged by set backs. Just make one change at a time until you get there.

Tip: Don’t deprive yourself of treats, or you’re doomed to failure. Here’s a delicious but simple “real food” recipe of mine forchocolate balls you will love.

5. Add some plants to clean the air at home.

Add some pot plants to your home. These will clean formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the air.

Any plants will help, as long as they are potted in soil, as studies have found that it is the soil, combined with the root system of the plant, that does a lot of the filtration. However, some plants which seem to be particularly effective include the peace lily, bamboo palm, rubber plant and green spider plant.

    Q: I have been battling endometriosis for several decades now and I hadn’t really found relief until I began educating myself and prescribing my own remedies…. conventional medicine seemed to be unable to help, save for surgery which only helped for a few months.     Q: I would like to know if that was you on the Al Sharpton show, Monday morning. The show is called “keeping it realâ€. My second question is, do you have any products that would help melasma. So many black women and men suffer with this [facial] hyperpigmentation. The only product that I know that really helps is hydroquinone that many women use today to lighten [bleach] their skin tones. I do not want to use it for that purpose; I have a beautiful skin tone. I just need to lighten the pigmentation that has changed my complexion.     Q: I am starting to look at alternative medicines and food choices very seriously now, in fact I recently wrote a research paper on the subject, while reading your article you mentioned Dr Hulda Clark, I goggled her name and got some good and bad reviews. One article in particular caught my attention. If you could would you please read this article and give me your feedback. I am really interested in alternative medicine and I want to teach my kids about the options that they have. I am currently putting together a binder for my kids with things I have read about alternative medicines, detox, the harm that cooked foods(meats in particular) have on the body etc. This article bothered me and before I include any information on treatment from her clinic I wanted some feedback on this article.


    Hulda offers some very good information but she's a bit extreme in my opinion and she relies too much on gadgets for healing rather than the mind, diet, attitude, lifestyle, etc. The choice is up to you, Beloved, whether to include her clinic!     Q: I am interested in starting the Full Body Detox program. At this time, I would like to know which program is best for me. At current, I have started removing things from my diet as of 2 weeks ago (pork, chicken, red meat, I'm trying with the fish but it's hard!) I am not eating cheese but I still eat yogurt and every now and then I will eat a boiled egg (egg whites). I have removed soda from my diet, no coffee, I drink herbal or green tea, pomegranate juice or orange juice and I drink filtered water (I have a countertop filter that I change every 6 months and the Brita pitcher that I change every 2 months).     Q: To make a long story short, my mother just found out that the 'cancer' her doctors had been treating her for the past 8 yrs was misdiagnosed. Her new Doctor informed her she's HIV positive and all the drugs; radiation/chemo treatments have only weakened her body. This information is quite distressing.     Q: I was reading your article about vinegar being harmful to the body because of its acids and I was curious to know what you think of the Organic unpasturized, unfiltered apple cider vinegar with mother? I saw that at the end of the article it stated that "if you must" use vinegar to use the organic apple cider vinegar but, I have read many places that it has many health benefits such as reducing bad cholesterol, regulating blood pressure, eliminating toxic waste from the body, fighting fungal and bacterial infections, helping relieve joint pains, breaking down fat which helps in natural weight reduction.


    I approve of apple cider vinegar for health purposes. Some good stuff!

    Q: I see also that you recommend a complete diet with these programs. I am guessing its a vegan diet right? I wanted to ask something on that is coconut milk and coconut oils ok for that? I personally had a very hard time trying to eat that many vegetables and many ph balance vegans seem to think fruits aren?t good either. I eat that many vegetables one it tears me up the next day and two I just cant consume enough calories that way. I can try and make up for it by eating things like almonds but I eat to many almonds I get the same problem the next day. Now coconut milk (unsweetened) and a digestive enzyme works for me for picking up extra calories.... but I hear very conflicting information about coconut and its saturated fat content. Is it ok to use daily as a part of the diet for cleansing? And your oxy-drops are those the same as the drop for ph balancing water?? Or is it something different? I am wanting to start lifting weights as I need to put on some muscle and I?m wondering if its something that would be beneficial in combating muscle soreness by increased oxygen in the body.


    The diet we recommend is vegan-based, and RAW FOODS. Fresh fruits, vegetables, raw nuts and seeds are ideal.

    Q: What's the best way to start on a vegan/raw food diet?     If I do say myself, the best way to start a raw food diet is to be coached by me.     Here are some other tips to get started.

    3: Start simple with breakfast. Always start your day with a green smoothie. read "Green smoothie revolution" by forget authors name at the moment. heh.

    A sample meal plan would be.

    Breakfast: Green smoothie

    Bridge: raw bar, handful of nuts or seeds, or fruit

    Lunch: Raw wraps made from collard greens. use a base of tahini, hummus, or nut butter. Fill with sprouts and colorful veggies

    Bridge: raw bar, handful nuts or seeds, or fruit

    Dinner: Raw pasta with a large salad

    Snack: Sorbet

    Q: Thank you for always answering my questions. I have about two more. Okay, I'm currently living overseas where I'm limited on raw fresh foods (vegetables and fruits). I want to do the detox but I'm concerned that I won't have everything as far as raw food to be successful. I have access to basics (apples, oranges, bananas, tomatoes, avocados, melons, lettuce, cabbage, bean spouts, carrots, celery, peppers, green beans, peas, bagged nuts,) but nothing exotic by any means. Then I was told to safely eat some of the food in the local economy that we should wash it with a 5% bleach solution (is that safe...and if on the detox I'm thinking that would be a no go). Two questions?Given the mentioned availability of raw foods could I be able to successfully complete the detox (I don't have an issue with eating the same things over and over again) and two what can I do to clean local produce so that its safe for consumption? Apparently part of the issue is that they use human feces to fertilize. Thank you for your time and I look forward to your response


    Yes, it seems you have enough raw food available to you to complete the cleanse.

    In order to clean local produce, rinse thoroughly with apple cider vinegar to "disinfect" it. If apple cider vinegar is unavailable, just use water.

    Q: Thank you so much for doing all that you do. I wish that you were in my everyday life...If I ever come to Cali, I hope to be able to take you up on some of your services. I have given your site out to many people that cross my paths...most recently, a man with diabetes who is going blind. He seemed to be quite thankful for your info...I do hope that he contacts you...and my friend who perhaps has a problem with a parasite(s). But me....okay just waiting for tax refund and then I will hit you up for another full-body detox...and perhaps a parasite kit myself...as it is sad but true..with my current boyfriend careless but kind...I now have a problem with genital herpes...a small breakout every other month...I eat well for the most part...ofcourse it could be better. But the stress is hish...I am working on that. But my question is...would an air purifier do me any good? You see I live in Dundalk, Maryland...near baltimore...near a Steel plant, and a yeast plant, and close to the military practice bombing sites, and other military negative stuff, and the city polluted with car pollution, tons of light pollution, and they spray for mosquitos...then I go to work and I work at a place called ABC Supply...great place right, well the stress is high, and the building we work in is shot...I swear there is mold under the carpets in one of the rooms...the ceiling is constantly leaking and we don't know what from...and the fumes from forklifts and the asphalt from the shingles...the filterfrom the intake gets changed like once a year...but is filled with 'shit' probably in a day or week. So the answer is to get a new job and move...yeah I know...I just don’t know how to do it...or where to go. Since I moved here, I have a problem with my ears...filling up with water or histimine or whatever...usually if I don't drink enough water near my menstrual cycle...I went to a doctor once and basically walked out of the office telling him what to do for his cold...yasee..he was no help...I knew more than him already....these past two years have been bad for allergies. Now, my ears and my throat...my nose too...though I do clean it out with water and that helps. I am not the only one. In the past two years there is a great number of people who say the same thing...they have never had a problem with allergies until these past two years. My grandmother and next door neighbor are two..but many more...well they just started up that steel mill again probably about that time...they sprayed hard core for mosquitos right before my grandmother started having problems...global warming for one...and i dont' know..but two years ago I was involved with a group of people sending out petitions against an LNG liquid natural gas plant that would bring in a ship two times the size of a football field and a huge pipe line to pennsylvania, and a skyscraper of a building to store the gas. Well...we fought against it...but apparently the gas company has more say than our own local government...I don't know...but hear about it every once in a while that they are still trying to get it built.     In regards to your question: Oh yes! By all means purchase an air purifier or an ozone machine (which will actually be best or better for you). Make sure you detox (FULL BODY DETOX) periodically, consume ACTIVATED CHARCOAL, and take plenty of IODINE PHOSPHATE as sea weed is great for neutralizing the effects of radiation.

    Q: I wrote to you a couple weeks ago asking if it was normal for me to have an outbreak only a day or two into the full body cleanse kit. You wrote back and told me that an outbreak is the body healing. It is two weeks later and I am still having an outbreak! Is this a good sign? Do you think this outbreak may continue on through my anti viral kit? I have been eating mostly fruits and vegetables, however I felt like I needed more substance and I was not enjoying my food at all... so I bought organic noodles and organic tomato sauce (sea salt only, tomatoes, no sugar, you get the point). Is adding some of this into my diet going to make the kits less effective or possibly not work?


    The outbreak is a result of your body trying to eliminate the toxicity and impurities from your body. Continue to follow the guidelines of the Cleanse.

    In regards to what you ate, YES, they make the cleanse less effective, so you may not want to eat much of cooked foods. Raw foods will optimize the cleanse. If you are having trouble staying full, try more healthy fats, like avocado, coconut cream, or raw nuts and seeds.

    Q: Dear Yogi, I read an article on your site about reverse Kundalini (anal sex). I don't know if you can answer my question or not - originally I was going to pose it to "Ask the Guru", but in my limited understanding, Kundalini is tied into yoga. I have been trying to get balanced by meditating, living my passions, writing, art, and belly dancing all unprofessionally, except for the first one (on a very small scale). I have been doing guided chakra meditations and other things, including yoga, and some dietary modifications. I feel I am gradually growing and living my purpose. However, incrementally starting in my mid forties. Anyway, I have been on this path for a couple of years now, and have more happiness and peace than I ever have. I don't want to get into a lengthy essay about my limited understanding of Kundalini, and the possibility of what I perceive is going on with my body (though I am very healthy) right now, so I will attempt to get to the point. I am grateful for my life. I have much more than many people if I were to measure. I feel like I am still blocked, though. About three years ago I dated a guy who sodomized me one time. He was a rapist, long story short and an error in judgement on my part. Though my intuition was screaming at me the whole time. I look at the experience as pushing me further along my path and teaching me to trust, love, respect myself, and defend my boundaries. What concerns me is that I feel that experience is still trapped within me to a degree, and I am worried that it will manifest into a disease. Often when I meditate on my root chakra I start crying. Part of me believes that I can't force anything, just have to let the process unfold in its own time. There is so much info out there that I find it overwhelming, and it is hard to know which to trust. So I have just been going with what resonates with me as far as technique. If you could offer me any advice, I would be grateful.


    Hello, I would like to first thank you for sharing your story and your experience. It sounds like you are devoting time and attention to the many things, that will help foster a sustained health and healing for you in life. As you have recognized, it is very helpful for us to take intuition very seriously and to honor this innate ability to discern whether a situation will be harmful or beneficial to our growth and experience as humans. Very often the circumstances and challenges presented to us in life, as happened in yours, serve as great teachers in allowing us to witness our own great strength, compassion, and value. I am glad to hear that you have been able to take the very difficult situation you found yourself in and use your experience to create a better understanding of yourself in the process. While it is true that we tend to develop patterns of holding and habitual ways of holding tension within the body; this does not mean that there are not steps you can take to move through such a body, mind, and spirit experience. The fact that you are crying upon meditating on your root chakra is a sign that you have made yourself available to the grief that naturally accompanies traumatic situations such as the one you experienced. Keep in mind that when we deeply grieve, our bodies are able to express the energy that may have potentially been repressed during this experience. The energy of the root chakra is all about our ability to feel safe, strong, and supported. The violation of this energy can leave one feeling ungrounded and striving for our self-preservation. Try not to become fixated on the worries you are having about the experience arising as disease in your body, as worrying can lead to increased levels of chronic stress, which will potentially create an internal environment more vulnerable to disease - which is what you are trying to avoid. It might be nice for you to meditate on your right to be here, to exist on this planet, and to be valued. It may also be very nice for you to take some restorative yoga classes, which can be grounding and stimulating to the parasympathetic nervous system (assists in the healing process). Recognize that the body may be holding energy in a direct response to a real threat, but begin to create a safe, loving and supportive environment to allow yourself to begin to be able to let go of this holding as you feel safe. When working to heal the first chakra, it is helpful to get in touch with the direct experience of the sensations of the body and become aware of the physical experience of the body. This can be done with the assistance of an expert, to help you change the physical expression of your felt experience. We could also do something called "body dialogue" to put you more deeply in touch with what the physical expression you are experiencing has to teach you about how you are inhabiting the world you are in. There are also many forms of grounding exercises which can help to balance the first chakra.     Q: How can I make the transition from cooked food, to raw food? Do you have any raw recipes for children? How can I get kids to eat raw?

    Q: I just purchased the FULL BODY DETOX and I have a question. I work a full time job (office work) and a part time job (cleaning). I'm worried if I will be able to work while doing the detox, I also workout (weight lifting) and with eating raw foods and no cooked food, I'm wondering if I will make it the 3 weeks doing this. I want to detox my body but I'm wondering if I can eat anything else (fish, chicken, baked of course).     Q: Yeah it does seem like it would be a lot of pills to take to do a Full Body Cleanse one time...plus the longer term would probably be more effective I would think. I think I have just one more question here and that would be about the Anti-viral kit and the Parasite & Worm Cleanse. As I read they go hand in hand the Anti-viral Kit cleans up blood and Parasite & Worm Cleanse cleans up organs and tissues if I read it right and remember it correctly. My question is which would be first?? My guess would be clean up the blood first since that is constantly pumping around nasties if it?s already full of poisons.     Q: I started the full body detox today, and found that I DO NOT like the salad dressing I made with the olive oil, apple cider vinegar and lemon juice. I found I could not tolerate it on my salad. What can I do instead? Another question is... I noticed lentils on the food combining chart. Those have to be cooked. Are those actually allowed to be consumed warm? I love the raw fruits and vegetables. I don?t have a problem, cause I love salads. I just need help on what I can have on it.

    Q: I gave birth a week ago and am at home recovering. I feel like this was the healthiest pregnancy up until I was hit by another car who ran a red light. I was 34 weeks at that time. In the emergency room I did not know until afterwards that they injected me with steroids to speed up the development of the baby's lungs. This caused crazy side effects and at 37 weeks I had to give birth. She is fine, a little jaundice, but overall she is doing better than my first two children.
