5 Ways To Spring Clean Your Body with Food

Green salad with sprouts and cucumbers

Spring is coming! A time of birth and growth. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it’s associated with the liver and the element wood. As we spring clean our homes, we should also spring clean our bodies. It’s the perfect time to change from winter warming foods to those that help the body detox from those indulgent moments of festive food delights.

It is, I think, fair to say that we all eat differently, depending on the season. Soups in winter, salads in summer — but what should we be eating in spring?

I’ve come to realize firsthand just how significantly we’re affected by what we put into our bodies at different times of the year. So to smoothly adjust to the new season, here are some tips on how and what to eat in spring.

1. Drink homemade juices.

This is a time for vegetable juices or broths, as the enzymes in fresh vegetable juices provide extra nutrients that help your body eliminate toxins.

Leafy green vegetables are particularly cleansing, especially those that are bitter such as dandelion, endive, parsley, beet, kale, chard, mustard greens, spinach, endive, bok choy, and arugula.

The advantage of making juice at home is that you have control over making sure it includes the highest quality ingredients.

2. Flush the system with water and herbal teas.

Drinking water and teas is a perfect way to cleanse and hydrate the system. When drinking clean water, add a dash of lemon to stimulate the liver.

Different teas have different cleansing properties. Some great examples are dandelion, burdock, ginger, licorice root, nettles, mint, fennel, and cardamom. I find mixing ginger and licorice with dandelion makes for a harmonious blend.

3. Manage your stress levels.

In TCM, the liver is the main organ associated with stress. The liver is responsible for the free flow of blood and energy throughout the body, and stress causes blockages. This can lead to problems such as IBS, bloating, heart burn, or palpitations, and headaches.

Furthermore, stress can cause inflammation. Breathe deep into your belly and get regular exercise, which can help to free the flow of the liver.

4. Stop bloating.

Bloating is caused by overeating, eating raw foods, or eating in a stressful environment. Make sure that you’re not eating at your desk or in front of the TV, and eat mindfully, chewing and enjoying what you’re eating. Warm and anti-inflammatory foods are often easier to digest too.

Foods that ease stomach and intestinal discomfort include:

  • cucumber
  • banana
  • papaya
  • asparagus
  • fennel seeds
  • ginger
  • peppermint
  • chamomile

While cruciferous vegetables are seasonally spring vegetables, be careful, as these contain sugars that can cause bloating. You can also add supplemental enzymes and probiotics to your diet to help with the breakdown of your food.

5. Shop at your local organic store or farmers market.

The local store or market are more likely to have local and therefore seasonal produce. As such, the fruits and vegetables should have been grown in organic rich soil, packed full of all the micronutrients we need.

Some vegetables to look for:

  • beets
  • beet greens
  • celery
  • asparagus
  • zucchini
  • cucumbers
  • string beans
  • naturally fermented sauerkraut
  • sea vegetables
  • onions
  • garlic
  • leek

According to TCM, the liver is sensitive to overheating, so steer clear of overly spicy foods. The flavor of the liver is sour, so feel free to add a dash of lemon or lime and make sure you prepare your food lightly sautéed or steamed.

Eliminating the toxins through the bowel is important; try adding roasted and ground flaxseed to dishes to help with lubrication.

Your health and well-being are in your hands — get out and enjoy the crisp spring air!

Q: Hello, this is my 2nd time doing the full body cleanse. I did it last year so now I'm doing it again. I started on Monday 3/9 and since have lost 5 lbs. Is that normal? Also why do you recommend Distilled water and not Spring and/or filtered (Brita). I have always drank a lot of water but roughly how many times a day should I urinate and how many times a day should I make a BM? When I did it the first time last year it was late Spring early Summer and incorporated a lot of walking which helped out a lot. This time not so much due to the horrible NY weather. I would appreciate you answering my questions and getting back to me at your earliest convenience. Thanks

A: Everyone's body is different and responds to the regimen differently. Losing 5 pounds in days is okay. Distilled water is the best type of water that helps to detox the body. You should be drinking half your body weight in water. Anything you put into your body you can expect it to come out. Bowel movements and urination is directly related to the foods and beverages you're consuming. Be sure that you're consuming three regular meals a day; eating fruits and vegetables with fiber.

Q: Thank you for always answering my questions. I have about two more. Okay, I'm currently living overseas where I'm limited on raw fresh foods (vegetables and fruits). I want to do the detox but I'm concerned that I won't have everything as far as raw food to be successful. I have access to basics (apples, oranges, bananas, tomatoes, avocados, melons, lettuce, cabbage, bean spouts, carrots, celery, peppers, green beans, peas, bagged nuts,) but nothing exotic by any means. Then I was told to safely eat some of the food in the local economy that we should wash it with a 5% bleach solution (is that safe...and if on the detox I'm thinking that would be a no go). Two questions?Given the mentioned availability of raw foods could I be able to successfully complete the detox (I don't have an issue with eating the same things over and over again) and two what can I do to clean local produce so that its safe for consumption? Apparently part of the issue is that they use human feces to fertilize. Thank you for your time and I look forward to your response

    A:

Yes, it seems you have enough raw food available to you to complete the cleanse.

In order to clean local produce, rinse thoroughly with apple cider vinegar to "disinfect" it. If apple cider vinegar is unavailable, just use water.

Q: I am interested in starting the Full Body Detox program. At this time, I would like to know which program is best for me. At current, I have started removing things from my diet as of 2 weeks ago (pork, chicken, red meat, I'm trying with the fish but it's hard!) I am not eating cheese but I still eat yogurt and every now and then I will eat a boiled egg (egg whites). I have removed soda from my diet, no coffee, I drink herbal or green tea, pomegranate juice or orange juice and I drink filtered water (I have a countertop filter that I change every 6 months and the Brita pitcher that I change every 2 months). Along with the supplement, is there an eating plan that you can suggest for me? I am eating more fruits and vegetables, but I would welcome suggestions on certain foods that I can eat while I begin my cleansing.

    A:

The Full Body Detox kit comes with a prescribed dietary plan and notifies a person what they can and cannot eat during the detox.

Q: Hello, I read one of the articles it said to drink distilled water. I was drinking that because I thought it was the right one. A book I was reading said to drink spring water. Can you explain the difference to me about distilled and spring?

    A:

We answer your inquiry in our article on "ALKALINE WATER". Distilled is BEST for Detoxing whereas Spring water is good daily drinking water. But you're Detoxing!

Q: Dear herbalist, I would like to know if it's alright for me to alternate cod liver oil pill (omega 3) in between taking the blood and lymph cleanse. I use to have beautiful skin until spring of this year. Also I want to know if taking teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil is good for healing me of what I believe may be vitiligo, tenea vesicle or eczema (dermatitis). PLEASE HELP.

    A:

Cod liver oil is crap! Olive oil is healthy and good for you. To repair the skin, focus on cleansing your blood (FULL BODY DETOX, vegetable juice, etc.). Check out our new article "SKIN DISORDER = BLOOD DISORDER".

Q: I'm doing the Full Body Cleanse and I have a few questions about it: I get tired of drinking just the distilled water and I'd like to drink the herbal teas, but I don't like it by itself. Would it mess things up to add a pack or two of Splenda to my tea or maybe honey? I can't stand the salads with the olive oil or apple cider vinegar or the lemon juice as dressing and it makes me gag. I have To have some sort of salad dressing. What kind would be suitable? Do I look for sugar-free? Or organic and natural? I found one that is organic and natural, but it has 3 grams of sugar in it. Without eating all my whole grained breads and other fiber, I haven't had much of a bowel movement in 3 days, should I wait a while yet? (I had surgery on my bowels and always had to take fiber tablets and eat lots of grains to get my bowels to move.) I haven't done the enemas yet, (low on money) should I try that? Or should I resume my fiber tablets I normally take? Any type of fiber I could add to my fruit smoothies in the morning? I want to also do the female cleanse. Is it ok to do that immediately after I finish the full body cleanse or should I wait for a little while? Thank you for all your help, I feel much better than I did before and I just started this detox a week ago, lost 10 pounds, too, woohoooooo! Thank you

    A:

    1. Instead of splenda, use agave, stevia, or grade b maple syrup as a sweetener.

    2. In re Salad Dressing, an organic and natural one is great. You can also check our website for salad dressing recipes.

    3. The fiber pills are not part of the cleanse, so we wouldn't advise those. Fruit is you best choice of fiber so look into eating more papaya, mango, figs, etc. And yes, colonics (and enemas) would greatly help you - undoubtedly!

    4. You can do the Female Cleanse right after you finish detoxing. There's no need to wait!

Q: I am doing the the Full Body Detox, the Anti Viral Cleanse, and then the 10 Day Electric Greens Cell Food Cleanse. I am trying to fully heal form so called HIV. I plan on going to find a sauna and get my Charka balance. What else can I do to make these spots go away?

    A:

Q: I wrote to you a couple weeks ago asking if it was normal for me to have an outbreak only a day or two into the full body cleanse kit. You wrote back and told me that an outbreak is the body healing. It is two weeks later and I am still having an outbreak! Is this a good sign? Do you think this outbreak may continue on through my anti viral kit? I have been eating mostly fruits and vegetables, however I felt like I needed more substance and I was not enjoying my food at all... so I bought organic noodles and organic tomato sauce (sea salt only, tomatoes, no sugar, you get the point). Is adding some of this into my diet going to make the kits less effective or possibly not work?

    A:

The outbreak is a result of your body trying to eliminate the toxicity and impurities from your body. Continue to follow the guidelines of the Cleanse.

In regards to what you ate, YES, they make the cleanse less effective, so you may not want to eat much of cooked foods. Raw foods will optimize the cleanse. If you are having trouble staying full, try more healthy fats, like avocado, coconut cream, or raw nuts and seeds.

Q: I have been drinking nettles tea as well as parsley juice and a tea made of marshmallow, gravel and hydrangea roots to control my potassium levels. I have noticed that my potassium numbers are less controllable now that I do dialysis once or twice a week. I know they give me a “K-bath" and I suspect that it keeps my potassium higher to discourage me from eating fruits and veggies and to make me feel jittery enough to keep going back. Actually the doctor told me not to juice or eat fruits at all. I will be ordering your FULL BODY DETOX this week, However, I want your input on how to control my potassium.

    A:

You control your potassium levels by not worrying about it - eating how God intended you to eat. Beloved, just eat NATURAL food (fruits, vegetables, seed, and nuts) and you'll be all right. P.S. - apples and bananas are good sources of potassium!

Q: I have read about your detox system on your site and others. Here is the product that I am thinking about purchasing: Full Body Detox I have some questions... 1) Is there a diet plan or eating plan that comes with this order? and 2) I have 100 pounds to lose and am thinking about going on the Medifast plan. That is a high (vegetable) protein diet with no fruit and not a lot of vegetables allowed. Would these supplements in the detox plan help my organs that might be taxed a bit on this diet with very little vegetables and no fruit? I am skeptical about #2...I think raw fruits and vegetables are so important inour diets, yet, I do need to drop weight fast. I look forward to any thoughts that you might have.

    A:

Yes, the Full Body Cleanse comes with a dietary regimen prescribing an all-raw foods diet (fruits, vegetables, raw nuts and seeds). This means no meat, dairy, grains, or processed foods.

Q: I am on my 3rd day of the fully body cleansing. I am definitely doing this to lose weight. I am a 52 year old, black, Christian, wife, mother to 21 and 14 year old girls, legal secretary who is 450 lbs. I am to the point now where if I don't do this I'm going to be housebound. I can barely move some days that is why I started this because I feel so unhealthy. I have a question about the nuts. I got all gun-ho and ordered $135.00 worth of organic nuts from nuts.com. I got raisins, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, walnuts, pecans, pistachios and cashews and mixed them all up together (well I purchased 2 lbs of each but I only mixed up 1 lb of each together). Anyway, I was reading about how much calories are in nuts. Should I not pay attention to that because I was consuming a lot of calories in the first place or do I have to watch how many nuts I eat? I have put some nuts in a sandwich bags and basically filled it up and that is supposed to be my nuts ration for the day. I am also eating fruits and vegetables. So far the fruit have been grapes, grapefruit, red apples, pears, green apples and bananas. The vegetables have all been in a salad: tomatoes, celery spinach leaves, carrots, mixed in balsamic vinaigrette. I only ate the salad Monday night all the other times I have just eaten the fruit and nuts. I am also consuming approximately 75-100 oz of water. Sorry I’m long winded I just wanted you to get the entire picture.

    A:

Thanks for the question, I can definitely help you.

I am currently writing an eBook for www.dherbs.com called "Losing weight the healthy way." I have been a weight loss counselor for many years. I am also a health coach, personal trainer, bodymind nutritionist, and a vegan lifestyle coach.

When it comes to weight loss most programs want you to lose weight to get healthy. My mindset is to get healthy and lose weight.

In my health/fitness/nutrition coaching program www.theveganeffect.com I use a lowfat/high carb/ high raw/ nutrient dense/ high alkaline diet to achieve long term weight loss success. So far I am 100 percent in getting clients long lasting weight loss. If you are interested in my program please fill out the health history form on the side of the web page. We could have a free 1 hour initial consultation over skype to see how I can best help you.

Nuts are best kept to a minimum if you use them at all. Nuts are extremely high in fat and have the opposite omega 3- omega 6 ratio that is optimal for health. Seeds are best as far as ratios are concerned. Also nuts are truly easy to over eat and cause your nutrient ratios to be off.

A healthy vegan diet is a high raw fruitarian diet.

    Example:

Breakfast: green smoothie. (500-1000 calories of fruits blended with a handful of greens and water)

Bridge: Dates and strawberries (500 calories)

Lunch: Salad with low sugar fruits (cucumber, tomato, squash, bell peppers) topped with fruit, beans, psuedo grains,

    Bridge: 2-3 apples

Dinner: Raw wraps (collard greens) with low sugar fruit and tahini

    Snack: Sorbet

    Hope this helps

Q: I started my FULL BODY DETOX yesterday and so far so good. I have been reading books off of the book list you provided in the ALTERNATIVE DIET AND LIFESTYLES MANUAL. I really have great expectations for this detox. Anyway to my question since I have started the detox I can actually feel my organ (I am assuming) moving around. It almost feel like the motion of a child but I know I am not pregnant (hubby had a vasectomy) and plus the sensation is up too high. Have you experienced this yourself or know some else that has experienced this. I have to admit that I have not drank the daily recommended amount of water I am suppose to but I have been eating raw foods and drinking herbal teas.

    A:

People experience all kinds of things but most report their overall experience, not beginning ones. At this point I don't know what the case could be. Just trust in the healing process and take notes of your daily experiences. This is how you learn about your body. Good luck on your cleanse!

Q: First, I want to thank you for your time the other evening. Your information was very informative and helpful. Next, I have a few questions pertaining to the detox and the other services you provide. 1. Will going from a traditional American diet to a raw food diet cause my body to become ill in the beginning or go into "shock" from all the good foods I'll be eating? If so, is there any way to ease in to this plan?

A: While your body may experience a change as a result of the raw foods diet, you will not experience any adverse symptoms. Our products are 100% all-natural and only enhance your body.

Q: I am a 55 year old female. I have an overactive bladder. I am trying to control it myself, without medication. I have not tried herbs. I eat fruits, vegetables, grains and proteins (not beef or pork). I added back more meat proteins 1 1/2 years ago because I was becoming so tired and lacking energy. (I read The Schwartzbein Diet, which helped convince me to add more protein.) I don't eat much sugar, salt (only 500 mg./day) or hardly any processed foods. I drink water and licorice tea, because it makes me feel good. I believe in the power of positive thinking. Can you help me with this?

    A:

The steps you are taking in your diet are a great start. Try going raw, and eliminating grains and meat altogether. You can get enough protein and healthy fats with avocado, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, almonds, brazil nuts, coconut. You can also add Vegan Protein Powder to smoothies.

I also recommend you give our Full Body Cleanse a try to further detoxify your entire body. After detoxing, the ideal formula for you is our Kidneys Bladder-Adrenal formula.

Q: I've been doing raw for about 28 days and I am on day 9 of the FULL BODY DETOX. I have noticed that my hands are orange occasionally. This also was present before doing the raw fast and detox as well. I looked on your website to see if you had any articles pertaining to this but didn't see any. I have read up a little on jaundice, but I experience this only on my hands (palms only, not in eyes or anywhere else). 5 or 6 years ago I was experiencing pain in my liver area and began changing my diet. Shortly after that I went to see an acupuncture therapist for a back injury (car accident) and he asked had I'd been experiencing pain anywhere else and I told him in the liver area. He treated me for both. I never have pain in my liver area again but was unsure what the orange hands are all about. I don't know if that is too much information, but I'd really appreciate any information you can give me on this issue.

    A:

Orange or yellowish hands or feet denote TOXICITY. The body is toxic, especially the liver and needs to be cleansed periodically. Give the FULL BODY DETOX a try! Soak your hands in hot water (as hot as you can bear it) and 1 box of sea salt for about 30 minutes daily. I had this problem some years ago. I was going through times, had been through so much. I went and got a manicure one day and the Asian lady could read palms and told me I needed to relax. I had been doing everything by myself for a long time in life and needed to rest. She kept emphasizing rest. While this was true, my body also needed to detox. The anger in me at certain people and certain circumstances was stored in my liver (the liver stores anger). But in order to start a new life and live life anew, I had to work on my LIVE-R.

Q: I am 27 years old, 5'7", 125 lbs. I'm in good health; I haven't had any major health problems. The only health complaint I have is horrible menstrual cycles. After coming upon your website, I've decided to make major dietary changes. I've also decided to do the TOTAL WOMAN CLEANSE, and I've also ordered the maintenance herbs you've suggested for after the cleanse. I'd like to begin doing the TOTAL WOMAN CLEANSE and the FULL BODY DETOX regularly according to the seasons. I didn't order both at the same time due to financial reasons. My plan is to do the total woman cleanse at the start of fall...the full body detox at the start of winter...then again the woman's cleanse at the start of spring...and the FULL BODY DETOX at the start of summer. Is this a good plan? Or is there a more beneficial way for me to get the results I want?

    A:

It's a great plan and you'll love these cleanses and your body will thank you (and you can kiss those menstrual problems away as well). Thank you for your interest in Dherbs.Com!

Q: For the last 2 weeks, I've been eating only raw foods. My daily intake mainly consist of snow beans, green beans (string beans), kale, carrots, a small amount butter and crackers, bananas, apples, pears, lettuce, tomatoes, dates, spinach and filtered water. My question is: Am I getting the required nutrients and how would I know if I were not and specifically, how would I know what nutrient was missing. I also take the MALE HORMONAL FORMULA and JACKRABBIT FORMULA (regardless of whether I intend to engage in sexual activity).

    A:

OF COURSE! WHAT TO KNOW FOR SURE? GO GET A MINERAL TEST DONE. FIND SOMEONE IN YOUR TOWN WHO DOES NUTRITIONAL TESTING OR LIVE BLOOD CELL MICROSCOPY.
