6 Winter Gardening Tips

Which crops are the best to grow this time of year? And how do you properly protect them through the cold season? These 6 winter gardening tips can help.

1. What to Grow

Cuisine in the winter and early spring is all about roots, stems and leaves that mature slowly once the chill comes and the days become shorter. The great part about this is that these vegetables are also therefore sweeter and more potent, bringing hearty flavors to your wintertime kitchen.

Depending on your climate zone, some of the better crops to grow through the winter are spinach, lettuce, arugula, chard, kale, parsley alongside roots such as beets, carrots, turnips and radishes. In the most freezing climates these crops will need to be grown in either hoop houses or polytunnels.

2. Growing in Cold Frames, Polytunnels and Greenhouses

These are great options if you live in a climate zone where the temperatures drop below freezing at night (which would obviously kill less hardy crops like lettuce). Not only are they ideal for winter gardening, but will also provide a place for young seedlings to establish roots in the spring before transplanting, and a wonderful hot house for crops such as tomatoes and peppers. Make sure to water the crops grown in these structures on warmer days, and definitely not at night.

3. Tree Care

Early winter, or before heavy frosts hit, is the perfect time to prune your trees. Cutting off old, dead or diseased limbs and cleaning up tangled limbs will encourage healthy growth and overall well-being for your orchard or any other type of tree. Make sure to clear the ground of dead leaves too, as these can harbor disease if left underneath the tree.

4. How to Mulch Properly

Mulching is a great way to protect small trees, shrubs and perennial flowers and fruit bearing plants from frostbite. Use either clean straw, wood chips (especially if your soil tends to be to alkaline) or even shredded leaves. If you have a wood chippers, you can create your own mulch from prunings. Mulch up to 6-8 inches around the plant, but make sure to water if you live in a drier climate or experience warmer days. The mulch will be easy to pull away in the spring and will decrease weed growth!

5. Advice on Watering

Depending on your climate zone, watering can be very important for your winter garden. If you live in an area with mild winters, water in the late mornings, especially on sunny days, and make sure the soil stays damp but not so wet that it will chill the roots of plants at night. If you live in a colder winter, only water when necessary, and make sure any plants indoors receive enough water.

6. Sowing Seeds Indoors

Starting seeds is very difficult in the winter, and not really worth trying unless you live closer to the equator (or in the southern hemisphere). However, late winter will be the time to prepare your seeds for spring, and come February you will want to start your first tomatoes, basils and any early harvests of lettuce, spinach and brassicas you want in your garden. Make sure you have good quality soil, a warm and light filled place for your seeds to sprout, and make sure to keep them watered.

Q: Hello, this is my 2nd time doing the full body cleanse. I did it last year so now I'm doing it again. I started on Monday 3/9 and since have lost 5 lbs. Is that normal? Also why do you recommend Distilled water and not Spring and/or filtered (Brita). I have always drank a lot of water but roughly how many times a day should I urinate and how many times a day should I make a BM? When I did it the first time last year it was late Spring early Summer and incorporated a lot of walking which helped out a lot. This time not so much due to the horrible NY weather. I would appreciate you answering my questions and getting back to me at your earliest convenience. Thanks

A: Everyone's body is different and responds to the regimen differently. Losing 5 pounds in days is okay. Distilled water is the best type of water that helps to detox the body. You should be drinking half your body weight in water. Anything you put into your body you can expect it to come out. Bowel movements and urination is directly related to the foods and beverages you're consuming. Be sure that you're consuming three regular meals a day; eating fruits and vegetables with fiber.

Q: I am on my 3rd day of the fully body cleansing. I am definitely doing this to lose weight. I am a 52 year old, black, Christian, wife, mother to 21 and 14 year old girls, legal secretary who is 450 lbs. I am to the point now where if I don't do this I'm going to be housebound. I can barely move some days that is why I started this because I feel so unhealthy. I have a question about the nuts. I got all gun-ho and ordered $135.00 worth of organic nuts from nuts.com. I got raisins, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, walnuts, pecans, pistachios and cashews and mixed them all up together (well I purchased 2 lbs of each but I only mixed up 1 lb of each together). Anyway, I was reading about how much calories are in nuts. Should I not pay attention to that because I was consuming a lot of calories in the first place or do I have to watch how many nuts I eat? I have put some nuts in a sandwich bags and basically filled it up and that is supposed to be my nuts ration for the day. I am also eating fruits and vegetables. So far the fruit have been grapes, grapefruit, red apples, pears, green apples and bananas. The vegetables have all been in a salad: tomatoes, celery spinach leaves, carrots, mixed in balsamic vinaigrette. I only ate the salad Monday night all the other times I have just eaten the fruit and nuts. I am also consuming approximately 75-100 oz of water. Sorry I’m long winded I just wanted you to get the entire picture.

    A:

Thanks for the question, I can definitely help you.

I am currently writing an eBook for www.dherbs.com called "Losing weight the healthy way." I have been a weight loss counselor for many years. I am also a health coach, personal trainer, bodymind nutritionist, and a vegan lifestyle coach.

When it comes to weight loss most programs want you to lose weight to get healthy. My mindset is to get healthy and lose weight.

In my health/fitness/nutrition coaching program www.theveganeffect.com I use a lowfat/high carb/ high raw/ nutrient dense/ high alkaline diet to achieve long term weight loss success. So far I am 100 percent in getting clients long lasting weight loss. If you are interested in my program please fill out the health history form on the side of the web page. We could have a free 1 hour initial consultation over skype to see how I can best help you.

Nuts are best kept to a minimum if you use them at all. Nuts are extremely high in fat and have the opposite omega 3- omega 6 ratio that is optimal for health. Seeds are best as far as ratios are concerned. Also nuts are truly easy to over eat and cause your nutrient ratios to be off.

A healthy vegan diet is a high raw fruitarian diet.

    Example:

Breakfast: green smoothie. (500-1000 calories of fruits blended with a handful of greens and water)

Bridge: Dates and strawberries (500 calories)

Lunch: Salad with low sugar fruits (cucumber, tomato, squash, bell peppers) topped with fruit, beans, psuedo grains,

    Bridge: 2-3 apples

Dinner: Raw wraps (collard greens) with low sugar fruit and tahini

    Snack: Sorbet

    Hope this helps

I did the FULL BODY DETOX in May and have been taking your multi-vitamins since then. I'm considering taking the hair, skin, and nails formula. If I do, shall I discontinue taking the vitamins? Additionally, the only other supplement I take is your herbal contraceptive; I'm not on any prescription medication.

    A:

I recommend you take: HAIR SKIN NAILS FORMULA, MSM SULFUR, and use HAIR OIL. You may discontinue to the multi-vitamins if you like. You must change your diet, Beloved! hair requires nutrition! Start eating more fruits and vegetables!

Q: Joe was 14 when a fever blister escalated to an acidic, thrush, bacterial order in the mouth. After 3 days his doctor admitted him to the hospital. They tried everything even shutting his immune system down. He was there for 2 weeks, but this problem reoccurred more often in the winter of Baton Rouge, La. We are from LA, CA maybe it's the difference in climates and I believe he should detox gently with a good ph balance. What do you think?

    A:

I suggest you start using our ORAL ANTISEPTIC SPRAY and give the CHILDREN'S DETOX a try! It is stupid of doctors to shut the immune system down. Give these formulas a try (plus GOLDENSEAL & ECHINACEA EXTRACT) and watch the results!

Q: I have the alternative diet and lifestyle manual and want to make sure that this applies to the respiratory condition as well. Can I have the rice bread with no gluten or wheat? or rice pasta being that I have sarcoid? Can I eat cold water fish or venison in small portions along with veggies? What about rice or soy milk or protein whey shake for breakfast once or twice a week? Thank you once again my breathing has improved greatly and I have ordered many more supplies to maintain what I have accomplished thus far due to your regimen. I am not a vegetarian so I want to make sure it is okay to have white meats. I will do whatever I have to do to live. I love and appreciate everything you have done to change and help me to heal myself.

    A:

The manual applies when you are FINISHED with a cleanse or kit. Follow the regimen's diet. It clearly states NO COOKED FOOD. You are asking us about cooked food here. Stick to the diet plan and you will be alright! You are asking about foods no good for your condition. Whey is crap. Meat is no good. Grains are no good for you as well. They all produce too much mucus!

Q: I am 27 years old, 5'7", 125 lbs. I'm in good health; I haven't had any major health problems. The only health complaint I have is horrible menstrual cycles. After coming upon your website, I've decided to make major dietary changes. I've also decided to do the TOTAL WOMAN CLEANSE, and I've also ordered the maintenance herbs you've suggested for after the cleanse. I'd like to begin doing the TOTAL WOMAN CLEANSE and the FULL BODY DETOX regularly according to the seasons. I didn't order both at the same time due to financial reasons. My plan is to do the total woman cleanse at the start of fall...the full body detox at the start of winter...then again the woman's cleanse at the start of spring...and the FULL BODY DETOX at the start of summer. Is this a good plan? Or is there a more beneficial way for me to get the results I want?

    A:

It's a great plan and you'll love these cleanses and your body will thank you (and you can kiss those menstrual problems away as well). Thank you for your interest in Dherbs.Com!

Q: I love to drink water, but I like to drink hot water you know boiling water slightly cooled. Is there a benefit, or disadvantage to this compared to drinking room temperature water? Secondly, the water I drink is boiled water. Alkaline water is not a privilege most Kenyans have. If 56% of the population is living below poverty line you do the math. So the water I drink is tap water, that I boil to make it safe for drinking. When I get to work I have Alkaline water as my work place provides me with that provision. I think this is detailed enough for you to get the picture and help. Once again (I love you) in Swahili for spreading the gospel!

    A:

No difference at all, Beloved! Even the boiled water becomes room temperature water. You're doing fine! Thank you for your words as well! Much appreciated! Peace and Love!

Q: Thank you for the wonderful info you give to help us all live healthier lives. My concern is my hair loss. Is there an herbal remedies to help hair grow back like it did when I was in my young teens. I'm 41 years old now and my hair loss is primarily on the top. If you need to know my race (for any reason) I'm a black man. I do not want to use Rogain or any other chemicals to re grow my hair or pay money for hair transplants. Is there any hope to grow hair naturally or am I stuck with my genetic code of losing my hair? Thanks in advance!

He has done the CHILDREN DETOX (liquid extracts) once along with the elixir. What else can I do to get rid of all the mucus in him?

    A:

Q: Thank you so much for doing all that you do. I wish that you were in my everyday life...If I ever come to Cali, I hope to be able to take you up on some of your services. I have given your site out to many people that cross my paths...most recently, a man with diabetes who is going blind. He seemed to be quite thankful for your info...I do hope that he contacts you...and my friend who perhaps has a problem with a parasite(s). But me....okay just waiting for tax refund and then I will hit you up for another full-body detox...and perhaps a parasite kit myself...as it is sad but true..with my current boyfriend careless but kind...I now have a problem with genital herpes...a small breakout every other month...I eat well for the most part...ofcourse it could be better. But the stress is hish...I am working on that. But my question is...would an air purifier do me any good? You see I live in Dundalk, Maryland...near baltimore...near a Steel plant, and a yeast plant, and close to the military practice bombing sites, and other military negative stuff, and the city polluted with car pollution, tons of light pollution, and they spray for mosquitos...then I go to work and I work at a place called ABC Supply...great place right, well the stress is high, and the building we work in is shot...I swear there is mold under the carpets in one of the rooms...the ceiling is constantly leaking and we don't know what from...and the fumes from forklifts and the asphalt from the shingles...the filterfrom the intake gets changed like once a year...but is filled with 'shit' probably in a day or week. So the answer is to get a new job and move...yeah I know...I just don’t know how to do it...or where to go. Since I moved here, I have a problem with my ears...filling up with water or histimine or whatever...usually if I don't drink enough water near my menstrual cycle...I went to a doctor once and basically walked out of the office telling him what to do for his cold...yasee..he was no help...I knew more than him already....these past two years have been bad for allergies. Now, my ears and my throat...my nose too...though I do clean it out with water and that helps. I am not the only one. In the past two years there is a great number of people who say the same thing...they have never had a problem with allergies until these past two years. My grandmother and next door neighbor are two..but many more...well they just started up that steel mill again probably about that time...they sprayed hard core for mosquitos right before my grandmother started having problems...global warming for one...and i dont' know..but two years ago I was involved with a group of people sending out petitions against an LNG liquid natural gas plant that would bring in a ship two times the size of a football field and a huge pipe line to pennsylvania, and a skyscraper of a building to store the gas. Well...we fought against it...but apparently the gas company has more say than our own local government...I don't know...but hear about it every once in a while that they are still trying to get it built. So, an air purifier?? what do you think? Much Love and Health and Thanks!! Peace, RESPONSE: Thank you so very much for your words, Beloved. Much obliged from the heart!

    A:

In regards to your question: Oh yes! By all means purchase an air purifier or an ozone machine (which will actually be best or better for you). Make sure you detox (FULL BODY DETOX) periodically, consume ACTIVATED CHARCOAL, and take plenty of IODINE PHOSPHATE as sea weed is great for neutralizing the effects of radiation.

Q: Hello, I'm on day 3 of the FBC and I'm having a really hard time with sweets. It's even more trying because I work in a bakery which I cannot avoid because it is a family owned business and I, myself do a lot of the baking. What do you recommend to help seize my sweet craving besides fruit? Because it seems that I can eat fruit for substitution but after a while I still want to eat cake lol. Also, what brand alkaline water do you recommend? Is it best to drink the bottled water or make it? Thanking you in advance. D.Bolden

A: After a few days, your cravings will subside. If you feel like you need additional help with sugar cravings you can also try the Sugar Control. There are raw food desserts available in health stores like Whole Foods, raw food restaurants or raw desserts you can make. It would be best to purchase the alkaline water. Essentia, Nestle, Voss and Neo Water are some of the popular brands of alkaline water. Sugar Control - http://www.dherbs.com/store/sugar-Formula-p-63.html

I went back, and they gave me more antibiotics, and ointment. After a week it seemed to be working, but it started to make me itch, and a rash came on my penis. Q: I am beginning a career as an artist but I am a single mother. I have worked in many corporate offices as a temp. I have attempted attending schools for things I thought would make me money. I really want to be a successful artist but I also have to take care of my son and work on art and work on my freelance contracts. I do not make the money I want or live where I want to live yet. I help my mother with her bills, I buy groceries and cook for everyone, I work at my uncles center for children and out of an art gallery at the homeless shelter as well as attend courses regarding the art business. I am doing it all without acquiring debt but I would like to know if it sounds like I am doing enough. I live a very lonely life, no real friends, no boyfriend. The only "kicks" I get are smoking a little weed and drinking a little wine here and there. I take my son to school and pick him up daily. I made sure I got him into one of the top schools in my city I also try to teach him and read to him as much as possible and keep him out of trouble. It gets hard. How do I stay motivated? I think the thing that bothers me most is uncertainty and the lack of money I have right now. How do I get to the next level financially without acquiring debt or having to fight traffic and deal with crazy attitudes every day?

    A:

I apologize for the very delayed response, we have been experiencing technical difficulties.  I first would like to commend you on your ability to prioritize in such an effective manner.  Your life sounds like one lived in great service to  and love of others.  However, it is also VERY important that you receive energy from others so that you do not become too imbalanced.  Balance in life is crucial in all things (spiritual, physical, cognitive, relational etc).

Your loneliness is your heart's/spirit's way of asking for relational balance.  It will continue asking louder and cause difficulties in other areas of your life/being until you create this balance.  Your substance use (and thank you for your honesty) only temporarily masks the loneliness, but drugs can only make it worse.  You see, drugs block us from becoming skilled at creating healthy relationships because they numbs us by turning down the volume on our brain's natural pleasure-centers.

Additionally; keep in mind:  Your first fruits are always to be consumed by YOU!  You must always place yourself first, even before your son.  In example:  Airlines direct you that in the event of trouble you are to place your own oxygen mask on first.  You can be of no use to your son if you are unconscious due to lack of oxygen.  Similarly, if you give all of your fruits to others, you will have no "seed" or energy to produce more fruit.

You must give to you first!  Then you have the energy to give to others.  It teaches others how to give to you, how to love you, how to respect you and your needs while giving them the opportunity to reciprocate by giving to you.  This is how we balance giving.  Don't worry if it feels selfish at first, it definitely will seem that way, to you and possibly others.  Its just the change of tides making everyone feel a bit uncomfortable - but this will balance out in time as you become  more skilled at receiving and feel more worthy of others' care .

I realize you have asked several other questions, however I have addressed the one I feel will help unblock your energy and allow you to see that the answers to the other questions have always been right before you.  We are born with everything we need to accomplish our goals, we only need to focus on the proper utilization of these gifts and resources.  If you couple this skill with fearlessness and belief in oneself, you will win.

This communication does not constitute a client/coach relationship.  This is for information purposes only.

    Life is simply beautiful!

    Enjoy your Self!

Q: Is sea salt and warm water a good natural laxative? If so how often do you recommend the use of sea salt for elimination? I was reading The Master Cleanser by Stanley Burroughs and it gives this recommendation, along with drinking lemon water mixed with organic syrup and cayenne pepper. Is it safe to give myself an enema 2xs per day using a hot water bottle filled with fresh squeezed organic lemon and distilled water? Asking this because Bzod had me to listen to 88.3 today here in Cincinnati and the guy (Mike) was telling how he does this regularly and has great results.

    A:

Yes, sea salt in water is a mild laxative!

You can do it as often as you FEEL the need to drink or take it.

You can also consume the Master Cleanse (cayenne, maple syrup, lemon juice) if you choose. You can drink this as much as you like depending on how you feel.

And yes, you can perform enemas 2X a day! Enemas are very helpful for health!

Q: My daughter is now 6 years old and at the age of 1 was diagnosed with asthma. She was on albuterol and predisone for 4 years off and on and only taking the medicine when her asthma flared up. While she was on this medicine I noticed that she had lack of an appetite. I started giving her organic milk and keeping her tightly clothed in the winter and by the time she was 4.5 years I got it under control that she didn't have an attack for a year. During that year I noticed that she eats. She constantly wants to eat, and her stomach is getting bigger even though she is highly active. I'm pretty sure the medicine had something to do with this. She recently had a slight attack 3 months ago, and I've been looking all over the place for something natural to give her when she does have asthma attacks instead of giving her that medicine which is poisoning her system. If I gave her a Children's Detox would this help with the bloating of her stomach? What can I give her that is natural and effective to help with the asthma should it occur again?

    A:

Let the child perform the Children's Detox. Give her pear juice, plum juice, and prune juice periodically. The child sounds constipated. If the stomach is bloated and growing, clearly the child is backed up. Feed the child more fruits and vegetables (as they are loaded with enzymes which help with bowel movements).

The asthma can be knocked out with the herbs Mullein leaf, Eucalyptus, Lobelia, and Wild Cherry Bark. Give them to the child in tea form. Alternate the teas, switching them up, making sure she drinks all of them. Mullein leaf by far is the best. Asthma is nothing but a mucus condition. Rub essential oil of Eucalyptus on the child's chest before bedtime. First rub on some olive oil, and then apply the essential oil of Eucalyptus. We have a great Respiratory inhaler made with the best essential oils for lung conditions such as asthma.

Q: I need something to make my hair grow and to the dark circle around my eyes and to clean skin without changing the color of my skin.

    A:

I suggest you first cleanse your body with the Full Body Detox. After performing the FBD, perform the Total Woman Cleanse. After these 2 cleanses, I recommend you take HAIR-SKIN-NAILS, MSM SULPHUR, ELECTRIC GREENS CELL FOOD, and VITAMIN C formula.

Dark circles around the eye denote kidney problems (excess fluid buildup) and/or perhaps lack of proper rest/sleep time. You can heal from this too.

Q: Hello, I've been following the cleanse as it says in the book. My baby now refuses to drink from my breasts I’m so upset. He's been crying constantly for two days. I've been ill and vomiting constantly for the same amount of time. This is no coincidence. Today I've only drank water as the thought of anything else makes me feel ill. Every glass of water I've drank I've vomited. I feel so weak and sad The cleansing is just potent on your system. Take a day or two off and resume the cleanse again but only by taking 2-3 capsules at a time, not 5 at a time. Yes, others have experienced what you're experiencing. Follow the advice above and you'll be fine. What are you eating also? I would like to know. Thank you!

    A:

Please look up VOMITTING in the "DETOX TROUBLESHOOTING"and read the article "HEALING CRISIS" in our articles section. Also, babies don't receive toxins from breast milk but they will receive the benefits and cleansing effects of the herbs as well.
