7 Facts You Probably Didn’t Know About Nuts

0-399612251-fotolia-54884259-subscription-monthly-m

Nuts are one of the most amazing foods on the planet. They are loaded with fiber, nutrients and heart healthy fats. They’re void of sugar and contain minimal carbohydrates, and best of all, they taste heavenly. Despite these fun facts, I’ve run into many patients in my practice that avoid them like the plague due to their high fat and high calorie content. Fear not! Nuts can and should be a part of your diet for a variety of health and culinary reasons.

The most important reasons come from two huge studies published in the past two years. They showed that nut eaters live longer than non-nut eaters and have a lower incidence of death from cancer or cardiovascular disease. Here are seven nuts, seven facts and seven uses that will make you go nuts for what I call the other white meat!

1. Cashews are not the enemy — but their shells are!
Wondering why you can’t find a cashew sleeping inside its shell like you can other nuts? It’s because that shell can actually hurt you. Cashews are in the same plant family as poison ivy and poison sumac and their itchy oil is contained almost entirely in the shell of the nut. That’s why you find cashews sold out of the shell. Once you get past the shell, go nuts! Eating cashews may help you ward off, or manage diabetes by helping to stimulate blood sugar absorption by muscle cells, according to the authors of a 2010 study.

Cashews are commonly used in Indian, Thai and Chinese cuisines as a garnish or added into curry sauce. They can also be made into a cashew cream as a dairy-free vegan substitute. Check out this delicious recipe by Tal Ronnen!

2. The pistachio fruit (yes, it’s actually a fruit) and the vegetable kale have a lot in common.

Why? Because they’re both green! Pistachios get their green color from the samepigment (chlorophyll) that lights up your spinach, kale and other fabulous plant based foods. Pistachio consumption has been linked to increased antioxidants in the blood, improved heart health and may even decrease your risk for lung cancer. Pistachios can be eaten whole as a snack, used as a butter or paste to flavor foods, or crumbled as a topping on a salad.

3. Of all the nuts out there, walnuts are the only nut that has this!
Walnuts enjoy a distinction like no other — they are the only nut that has omega-3 fatty acids! The research on walnuts reads like the Sunday edition of the New York Times — it’s extensive and informative! In addition to the heart healthy benefits (including improvements in endothelial function) you’ll get from walnuts, you’ll also get a reduced risk of prostate cancer, breast cancer, and improved motor skills in older individuals. Use walnuts as a gluten-free base for anything that needs a crust (think healthy pies and tarts).

4. Peanuts aren’t nuts at all.
That’s right! They’re legumes. And guess what else — in addition to your prenatal pill you should be including them in your pregnancy diet. A 2013 study in the Journal Pediatrics found that moms who ate peanuts and other tree nuts during their pregnancy had children born with a significantly lower incidence of nut allergies. Although nut allergies amongst children have tripled in the last 15 years, and previous data showed a connection between pregnancy nut consumption and increased risk of allergies, the overall evidence has been lacking.

In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics rescinded its statement about avoidance of tree nuts in pregnant women in 2008. The most widely used way to use peanuts — you guessed it! Peanut butter! So don’t have Arachibutyrophobia, enjoy some peanut butter today (or in the month of November which is National Peanut Butter month). Just make sure the Just make sure the only ingredient in your peanut butter is peanuts (not sugar and partially hydrogenated oils).

5. Your gut loves almonds more than any other nut
A 2008 study found that almonds (and specifically the fat in almonds) may play a role in increasing healthy bacteria in the gut. Though the study is older and was funded by the Almond Board, the results were nonetheless intriguing to see an association between nut consumption and improved gut flora.

Further, a 2013 study found that consumption of almonds helped increase feelings of fullness without the risk for weight gain. Therefore, almonds may be a great option for both your gut (intestines) and your gut (excess weight). Go real raw by making your own almond milk. You’ll find several ways to make it with a quick search on the internet.

6. Macadamia nuts tell us when they’re ready for consumption!
Most macadamia farmers harvest the nuts after they have fallen from the tree to the ground. It’s that time when the nut is the most ripe so in a sense, the nut determines when it’s ready for eating! Although macadamia nuts get a bad rap for their high calorie content, they also happen to have wonderful benefits when it comes to overallheart health.

Just watch the portion control. Along with pecans, macadamias boast the highest calorie count in the nut world. Use macadamia oil for a different, yet delicious flavor in your next stir-fry creation!

7. Brazil nuts favor men.
Guys, stop throwing the big Brazil nuts out of the nut mix you’re buying! Brazil nuts are high in selenium, a mineral that has been found to be effective in the fight against prostate cancer. A key point in the selenium cancer connection lies in the source. A2014 study found that men who chose to get their selenium from supplements (instead of real food like Brazil nuts) had an increased incidence of prostate cancer. Enjoy a few every day as a mid-morning snack to get all the selenium you need without going overboard.

Finally, to get the most out of your nutty diet, enjoy nuts in moderation. They are still loaded with fat (even though most of that is healthy fat) and calories. That means that having a snack of nuts every day is great for controlling your weight, optimizing your health and increasing your feelings of satisfaction but snacking on nuts all day… not so much. Also avoid nuts that have been “dressed up” such as beer nuts, honey glazed and candied varieties.

Q: I am on my 3rd day of the fully body cleansing. I am definitely doing this to lose weight. I am a 52 year old, black, Christian, wife, mother to 21 and 14 year old girls, legal secretary who is 450 lbs. I am to the point now where if I don't do this I'm going to be housebound. I can barely move some days that is why I started this because I feel so unhealthy. I have a question about the nuts. I got all gun-ho and ordered $135.00 worth of organic nuts from nuts.com. I got raisins, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, walnuts, pecans, pistachios and cashews and mixed them all up together (well I purchased 2 lbs of each but I only mixed up 1 lb of each together). Anyway, I was reading about how much calories are in nuts. Should I not pay attention to that because I was consuming a lot of calories in the first place or do I have to watch how many nuts I eat? I have put some nuts in a sandwich bags and basically filled it up and that is supposed to be my nuts ration for the day. I am also eating fruits and vegetables. So far the fruit have been grapes, grapefruit, red apples, pears, green apples and bananas. The vegetables have all been in a salad: tomatoes, celery spinach leaves, carrots, mixed in balsamic vinaigrette. I only ate the salad Monday night all the other times I have just eaten the fruit and nuts. I am also consuming approximately 75-100 oz of water. Sorry I’m long winded I just wanted you to get the entire picture.

    A:

Thanks for the question, I can definitely help you.

I am currently writing an eBook for www.dherbs.com called "Losing weight the healthy way." I have been a weight loss counselor for many years. I am also a health coach, personal trainer, bodymind nutritionist, and a vegan lifestyle coach.

In my health/fitness/nutrition coaching program www.theveganeffect.com I use a lowfat/high carb/ high raw/ nutrient dense/ high alkaline diet to achieve long term weight loss success. Nuts are best kept to a minimum if you use them at all. Nuts are extremely high in fat and have the opposite omega 3- omega 6 ratio that is optimal for health. Seeds are best as far as ratios are concerned. Also nuts are truly easy to over eat and cause your nutrient ratios to be off.

A healthy vegan diet is a high raw fruitarian diet.

    Example:

Breakfast: green smoothie. (500-1000 calories of fruits blended with a handful of greens and water)

Bridge: Dates and strawberries (500 calories)

Lunch: Salad with low sugar fruits (cucumber, tomato, squash, bell peppers) topped with fruit, beans, psuedo grains,

    Bridge: 2-3 apples

Dinner: Raw wraps (collard greens) with low sugar fruit and tahini

    Snack: Sorbet

Q: I had surgery to drain a cyst on my right ovary, while in surgery the doctor hit my bowels, and they had to call in a surgeon to repair my bowels. I am on this low fiber diet now, and not able to eat raw foods. This means nothing in the green family like lettuce, or greens since they are hard to digest. This list includes no nuts, or fresh fruits with skin. How can I can complete a cleanse, if I am not able to eat the raw vegetables and nuts?

    A:

Simply perform your cleanse of choice and just eat as best you can, okay?

Q: Members of my house have started drinking Hemp Milk and Rice Milk. No more Cow Milk! We like the taste of both. I also like the fact that the hemp milk has omega and other nutrients in it. However, my son is three years old and we have discovered he is allergic to nuts because a family member gave him a cashew to eat, then his eyes began to swell up like Garfield the cat. I had him tested for food allergies and the test revealed he is allergic to nuts and soy. So I don't give him any nut products or soy products. My question for you is: "Is hemp a nut or a seed, is the hemp milk derived from a nut or a seed???" I need to know other alternatives if in fact it is a nut. I do not want to give him something toxic to him.

    A:

Hemp is a seed, not a nut, so hemp seed milk is okay for him.

    Nuts cashews - peanuts, soy

    Grains - rice, oats

Fruit - almond, coconut, banana, date

Q: I have ordered the detox cleanse, and the weight cleanse. Both state to eat a raw diet of veggies and fruit, nuts, nut pastes??, legume sprouts, seeds, plant oils, sea veggies??,and fresh juices. It mentions Vegan Diet. What are my options when it comes to these choices? What do I eat and how often to keep my sugar from dropping, and feeling sick? Usually mid am, and mid afternoon?

    A:

The best way to balance blood sugar and keep your body in a fat burning zone is to eat low fat and every 3-4 hours. Also high raw and high carb. Here are some options. Just a general outline.

    6am

    Muesli - fruit smoothie-green smoothie

    9am

    2-3 pieces of fruit

Q: I have completed the Pancreas Cleanse, and I'm finishing up the Full Body Detox, I'm very disappointed! Reason being, I thought I would have dropped a lot of the extra weight, and I didn't. I did all raw foods, and started preparing raw snacks, made with nuts and dried fruits. In fact, I think I was eating too many raw nuts. I'm still working to help my body heal from the diabetes, but not sure where to go from here. I still want to lose 35 lbs, and I will continue to eat raw at least 85% to 90%, but I need help with supplements. Where do I go from here? By the way is their any reason why, I lost more weight on the Pancreas Cleanse, instead of the Full Body Detox?

    A:

Too many raw nuts could cause a feeling of being bloated, but nuts are pretty good to eat while detoxing. Most people don't have a problem with nuts, while cleansing. Okay, so you have diabetes and the weight is from the diabetes association, correct? It is ideal to first perform the Full Body Detox, followed by the Pancreas Cleanse. If you don't release the full 35 pounds of weight with these 2 kits, you then perform either the 10-Day Supreme Colon Cleanse, or the Weight Release Cleanse. Also, whether cleansing or not, drink 2 cups of Pancreas Tea daily. If the weight (waste), is due to the diabetes then your body responded to the contents of the Pancreas Cleanse (because your body needed it), and this is a sign that you should only be performing the Pancreas Cleanse, and not the other cleanses I named above.

Q: I am allergic to all types of nuts and noticed that some of the supplements in the detox program include Kola Nut and black walnut husk. Will this affect me in the same way as eating a regular nut? If so, what alternatives do you suggest for me to do a detox?

    A:

No need to worry! Not your typical nuts. These are powdered into herbal powders. You won't have problems with these herbs derived from nuts.

Q: if you're not hungry can you skip the meal and eat fruit and nuts as a snack... can a meal be skipped?

    A:

Although your appetite may disappear it's still important to consume your daily meals. Fruits and nuts are okay to snack on, but increasing the amount would be an ideal meal plan while on the cleanse. Sometimes it comes down to portion sizes that make up the meal.

Q: Thank you for the cancer info...It is welcome and beyond informative, however, I take issue with your remark that "women would be wise to just accept the fact that they are female by nature and God made them to have (deliver) babies and they should stop trying to compete with and be like men." Part of me is not surprised--men make comments like this all the time. I chalk it up to ignorance, as men enjoy living their entire lives not having to endure periods, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and lord knows what else. So because a woman does not want to have children--at all, or at a particular time in her life--she wants to be a man?! That's an illogical conclusion you are making. So why are there pregnant women with cancer, some of which who have never taken BC pills? Are women entitled to making any sort of control over their reproductive health? What about women who are infertile, naturally? If they develop cancer, is it because they never gave birth to a child? Are you willing to support all of the children that will result from women not being on Birth Control, since many people cannot afford several children on their incomes? This line of reasoning makes some women think that men really need to get over themselves. I think you have been reading too much Freud. Some women, present company included, appreciate our femininity and everything that encompasses being a woman. At the same time, this is not the dark ages--and even then, women chose not to have children during different times in their lives. Surely you are aware that in non-Western countries women utilize natural herbs to control their reproduction or as abortifacients? I am not advocating abortion; my point is that if you are going to criticize women taking BC pills, you may as well extend this criticism to women naturally preventing pregnancy via alternative means.

    A:

Birth control pills play a big role in female reproductive cancers. Women would be wise to just accept the fact that they are female by nature and God made them to have (deliver) babies and they should stop trying to compete with and be like men. In attempting to stop or prevent life (birth control), they are ending up losing their very own lives. And the birth control pills cause cancer in areas of the body that denote femininity (breasts, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, uterus and vagina). This is a form of language here. You have disease and female organ(s) which basically means your disease is specifically related to an issue of femaleness or femininity, that's why the disease manifests in these "female" organs. In attempting to be like and compete with males, females compromise their feminine integrity and goddess nature which "eats them up" (anger, frustration, sadness, etc.) inside. When the cancer appears in any female organ, it serves as a sign or sensor that the problem lies on a deeper metaphysical level pertaining to emotions, thoughts and attitude."

Q: Can you please advise if the colon cleansing will have any effects if I suffer from loose stools rather than constipation? Have had issues with loose stools since my gall bladder was removed. Some improvement when I was diagnosed with thyroid disease and began taking Synthroid, but I still have issues with very loose stools and severe gas at times. Can this colon cleansing relieve these issues? Also, I have an allergy to nuts, all kinds. Can I still take the cleansing formulas that include the shells of walnuts; I believe is what it said. I must be very careful because I have been hospitalized after ingesting a very minute amount of what I think was peanuts. Your advice would be greatly appreciated as I am very interested in trying your products but at the same time I must be careful with my allergies. Also I’m allergic to eggs.

    A:

YOU WOULD BENEFIT FROM THE FULL BODY DETOX FOLLOWED BY THE DHERBS 10-DAY SUPREME COLON CLEANSE. BLACK WALNUT HULLS ARE SAFE FOR YOU. IT'S NOT ACTUALLY A NUT, BUT THE HULL FROM IT. ALLERGIES ARE OVERCOME WITH DEEP CLEANSING ON THE CELLULAR AND TISSUE LEVEL. REMOVAL OF THE GALLBLADDER HAS THROWN YOUR BODY OUT OF WHACK. HOWEVER, THE BODY DOES HAVE THE ABILITY TO COMPENSATE.

Q: I am currently undergoing testing for sarcoidosis and found your site. I am already mostly vegan, but I read in your article that complex carbs should be greatly reduced or eliminated. I was just wondering what that might include, rice, and oats? Should I be eating only fruits, veggies, beans and nuts?

    A:

That would include rice (only eat a little brown or wild rice), potatoes, yams, etc. Yes, eat more fruits, vegetables, nuts, etc.

Q: Do the supplements that go along with the Full Body Cleanse serve as an apetite curver being that only raw foods such as; fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds can be consumed during this process?

    A:

Great question. The key to successfully The Full Body Cleanse, is to not starve yourself. We want you to consume fresh fruits, and vegetables until you are content. Many people forget that the elephant, which is one of the biggest mammals on land is in fact a vegetarian. You can still eat veggies, fruits, nuts, seeds, and be content. I have provided you with a link to the recipes section on our site. Please click the link, and then look at the section entitled, "Raw Recipes." Under that section you will find a bunch of recipes that you can use while cleansing.

Q: Greetings & Namaste, First, thank you for being U-activated! So many potential energies unable to convert into kinetic activities because of our Earthly baggage(s). Personally, I haven't found the right formula to keep my beautiful curves, which is the major reason I am not vegan/raw now. In my perfect world, I'd have a great-tasting, non-dairy,wheat & gluten source of protein, juiced exotic veggie/fruit smoothies, yummy raw nuts/raisins, and absolutely no meat- the fountain of youth, literally, running thru my body! As i'm sure the cognitive wheels of your expertise are spiraling ready solutions, I ask that you also factor in social-economic status, and workout regiment. From my perspective, the price of health food is aggressively over-inflated compared to the affordability of processed and junk foods; add to that a general inaccessibility to the impoverished & disenfranchised, and dysfunctional eating psychologies impregnating entire families (for generations). I prefer high energy, high impact, anaerobic & weight-lifting training activities. So, you can see a petite person's dilemma. Thanks so much for your time and thoughts. Ms. Tiffany

Being raw or vegan does not have to be hard or expensive. The most inexpensive food are rice and beans. If you are budget consciense you should gravitate towards those foods. Stach based foods are super cheap. You should check out the book "eating vegan on 4 dollars a day" or any of Dr. Mcdougal's programs.

I run an online health/fitness/nutrition coaching program that can be found at www.theveganeffect.com. There you might find your answers.

Exercise programs do not have to be expensive either. I am a master at building fitness plans with the minimal of equipment. If all you have is your body weight than I can build you a 90 day plan. The same goes if all you have is a resistance band, exercise ball, dumbells, kettlebell, etc.

If you need any advice or have specific questions you should check out my website and message me there.

Q: I found this health article on the risk of getting cancer from working at night. I'm a night worker. have been for 16 yrs, and my sleeping and eating patterns haven?t been the same since. The article mentions taking melatonin...is that safe and effective? Also do you have any herbal cures for us night timers to reverse the effects of working the graveyard shift? I can sure use them?

    A:

Cancer stems from a host of things, not just one thing like working at night. Disease results from negative thoughts/mindset, negative attitude, poor diet; insalubrious lifestyle, and insalubrious environment. You don't need to take melatonin. Your body (pineal gland) produces it. As a night worker, just make sure when you are sleeping in the day time your room is completely dark, just like how Dracula used to sleep in the darkness of his coffin during the daylight hours. This is why Dracula was a thousand years old but looked young. He slept during the day (which produces melatonin which is an anti-aging hormone) and he operated at night whereby he also produced melatonin. Dude never aged! You do the same, just don't suck on no necks to get blood though -- LOL!!!! And no! There are no herbs to reverse anything that comes from actions or behaviors that are unnatural. You reverse the effects of night-time work by doing the opposite. In your case, it's your job (which you don't want to quit unless you can find another one), so you just get some good sleep during the day in pitch darkness.

Q: I just began the cleanse. My concern is that I am not getting enough protein. I have been eating nuts, and I will not eat uncooked beans or peas. What can I do to get more protein while I am on this 20 day regiment?

A: Great question. There is protein in a lot of the vegetables that we eat. Think about it like this, elephants are vegetarians, and they are some of the biggest/strongest animals around. Eat plenty of leafy green vegetables (kale, spinach, etc.), goji berries, nuts, broccoli, avocados, beets, cauliflower, and asparagus.

Q: Can you eat trail mix with raisins & nuts mixed together.

    A:

You can consume trail mix with nuts and raisins, just be sure that it is 100% natural and/or organic. A lot of the trail mix on the shelves of stores today are salted, roasted or contain preservatives. It's best to ensure that you're eating a product that is within the diet of the cleanse.

Q: I am currently living in Atlanta GA, moved here from New York. I've never suffered from pollen, or being allergic to raw fruits peach, apples or plums. I can't eat raw carrots and other types of nuts until I moved to GA, and started to suffer from Allergies. Now my question is, is there something from your site or some type of herbal combination that I can take to 1. Q: I just finished your FULL BODY DETOX and ANTI-VIRAL CLEANSE AND REGIMEN). I do feel much better however I am still having a constant discharge from my penis foreskin. Dr's who have looked at it say it is not herpes but if not then what? It has discharged since mid November and has not stopped. There is no pain associated with it directly but whenever a get tingling in my feet it feels that that as is the source of the problem. Someone told me they had tingling because of acidic body but then what about this discharge? Is it an infection? All normal STD's were negative but after hearing what the Dr's said I didn't get a blood test. Again I want to say that I think your products are fantastic and have made me much healthier. I did eat some sushi with brown rice, avocado, and kim chi after the kit and woke up the next morning with a headache and sore throat. Also I felt a throb under one of my arms which I had prior to taking the anti-viral kit. Maybe a lymph node? I had a number of raw food meals at a restaurant that used dehumidifier and nuts or seeds in most of their things and would also feel the tingling sometimes after eating this. I have read on some sites that herpes can be set off by nuts so I'm wondering. Anyway where should I go now to completely clear my body of any of these penis sensations discharges and tingling? Also I wanted to say that wow I have had a lot of mucus coming out of my body and my guess is there is probably more that wants to come.

    A:

Your solution is not in anything external such as the kits (FULL BODY DETOX (FBD) and ANTI-VIRAL CLEANSE AND REGIMEN). They only assist you. Your chronic problem means further work. Keep detoxing, eating a strict diet, etc. until the discharge goes away. Also, you are being compelled by your body to reassess and revise some things pertaining to your sexual belief system. The problem is with the penis so the underlying problem is pertaining to your sexuality. Tell you what: concentrate on your colon and reproductive system. Alternate between the FBD and the TOTAL MALE CLEANSE until you get your results. Healing requires patience! But deal with the underlying problem! What have you been doing sexually or what are your beliefs pertaining to sex? Are they healthy? You have a discharge because something (belief, thought) needs to be discharged.

Q: Thank you for always answering my questions. I have about two more. Okay, I'm currently living overseas where I'm limited on raw fresh foods (vegetables and fruits). I want to do the detox but I'm concerned that I won't have everything as far as raw food to be successful. I have access to basics (apples, oranges, bananas, tomatoes, avocados, melons, lettuce, cabbage, bean spouts, carrots, celery, peppers, green beans, peas, bagged nuts,) but nothing exotic by any means. Then I was told to safely eat some of the food in the local economy that we should wash it with a 5% bleach solution (is that safe...and if on the detox I'm thinking that would be a no go). Two questions?Given the mentioned availability of raw foods could I be able to successfully complete the detox (I don't have an issue with eating the same things over and over again) and two what can I do to clean local produce so that its safe for consumption? Apparently part of the issue is that they use human feces to fertilize. Thank you for your time and I look forward to your response

    A:

Yes, it seems you have enough raw food available to you to complete the cleanse.

In order to clean local produce, rinse thoroughly with apple cider vinegar to "disinfect" it. If apple cider vinegar is unavailable, just use water.
