7 Important Tips When Buying Olive Oil

It seems like every other day we hear from nutrition experts about healthy fats, the Mediterranean diet, and how olive oil consumption is growing worldwide. And while most of us have automatically tagged olive oil as the go-to oil for dressing and cooking, very few know how to choose a good quality oil when shopping.

It’s a complex decision, because olive oil is not cheap, yet very easy to adulterate. It’s very hard to sniff out the fakes. Here are some important tips that will help you make a good decision.

1. Olive oil is not like wine. It does not get better with age. The three things that cause olive oil to go rancid are light, heat, and oxygen. If the olive oil you are buying is in a clear glass bottle, that’s not as good as a dark glass bottle. In any case, store your olive oil sealed, in a cool dark location.

2. Buy Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO). Make sure the label states this explicitly. Buying oils labeled as “Pure” or “Light” does not guarantee the quality of oil, and most certainly means it is NOT Extra Virgin.

3. “Imported from Italy” and similar phrases mean diddly-squat, same for the nice pastoral images on the bottle. Italy does grow olives, but it is also the world’s largest importer of olive oil from countries such as Greece, Spain and Tunisia. Italian companies mix and bottle the oils, some of which are not the best quality. Some bottles include information about the region and a date that the olives were harvested – try for oil younger than 12 months.

4. If the label mentions FFA of 0.8% or lower (0.5% is really good), that is a plus. FFA stands for free fatty acidity (or just plain acidity). The higher the number, the more rancid the oil. Extra Virgin Olive Oil must be 0.8% or lower. Virgin Olive Oil must be 2.0% or lower.

5. Cold Pressed is a label that means that the extraction process of the oil from the olive took place at 27 degrees or lower. This means you are getting all the beneficial nutrients and antioxidants that may have been stripped out when oil is processed at a higher temperature.

6. The color of the olive oil does not really matter much. Similar to wine, there are hundreds of olive varietals, and their resulting oils each have distinct color, aroma, and flavor characteristics.

7. If an olive oil is cheaper than about $10 per liter (quart), it may have been mixed with lower quality oils. You see, making olive oil is an expensive business, and there’s a certain minimum cost to mauling trees, harvesting, and mechanically squeezing oil out of the fruit. Most other oils are extracted chemically from their respective crop.

    You are very welcome, Beloved! Olive Leaf is a very powerful and effective herb, especially for cases of so-called viruses. Because it's an herb you really can't take too much of it. Personally, 3 is the magic number, so I'd recommend 3 times per day (tea or capsule form).

    Q: I have read that Peppermint, Lavender, Rosemary and Sage essential oils are all good for hair and stimulating hair growth. Would it be more beneficial to use them all at once for maximum result or should I just use the Rosemary and Sage only as you suggested? Also, I didn?t see any Almond oil so I was wondering if I could use Olive oil or Jojoba oil as a carrier oil.

    Yes they are great for stimulating hair growth; however, I would use them together or combined. ANY natural edible oil can be used - it's YOUR choice. Jojoba and/or sesame seed oil are the best oils for the hair.

    Q: Dear herbalist, I would like to know if it's alright for me to alternate cod liver oil pill (omega 3) in between taking the blood and lymph cleanse. I use to have beautiful skin until spring of this year.     Q: Can I lightly sauté in Olive oil or steam my raw vegetables occasionally on the Full Body Cleanse? This is my second day on the cleanse and I am having a hard time eating crunchy vegetables.

    It is best to avoid oil for the cleanse and future dieting. Oil slows down digestion, reduces blood flow up to 30 percent for 3 hours after digestion, and is essentially a ton of calories with little to no nutrient value. When you sauté vegetables in olive or other oil you are turning a low calories highly nutritious food into a high calorie and low nutrient dense food.

    Steaming is an ok option if done lightly. When you steam vegetables you do reduce nutrient value and destroy some enzymes. If you do you will lessen the impact of the cleanse to a degree but I would rather you eat the vegetable than not at all. The benefit of eating the vegetable lightly steamed is better than avoiding the vegetable.

    Q: I've made a lifestyle change about 8 months ago. I excluded all dairy, wheat, grains, gluten, legumes, sugar, oils (except olive oil). I still eat minimum amount of meat (chicken, fish) maybe 2 -3 times/wk. I'm slowly trying to eliminate meat totally as I only use to make my meals more filling.     Q: My concern is that my baby isn't chewing and he's 2 years old. He does not like solids in his mouth so he spits them out or throws them up. Do you have any suggestions?     Q: Happy New Year to You and yours!!! My son is three years old; he was born December 12, 2004, this was a Sunday. Ever since he started talking he's had a fascination with the light and light bulbs. He looks up and says "mom look, the light is beautiful" or "mom see the beautiful light bulb".     Q: I started the full body detox today, and found that I DO NOT like the salad dressing I made with the olive oil, apple cider vinegar and lemon juice. I found I could not tolerate it on my salad. What can I do instead? Another question is... I noticed lentils on the food combining chart. Those have to be cooked.     Q: I am on day 5 of the FULL BODY DETOX. I have severe eczema and I re-read the instructions last night. After steaming am I to use food grade hydrogen peroxide on my face or regular store bought hydrogen peroxide? Should I expect it to burn?     Don't use hydrogen peroxide daily. When you do use it, pat it on your face with a cotton ball. Use it ever other day, not daily. Use 3% HP not 35% food grade! 35% FGHP will burn your face.

    Q: I usually wear an Afro, but now I keep my hair in braids under a hat. A month ago my hair began to break, and my scalp got very dry. So, I started using shea butter, and olive oil.
