7 Shocking Maca Benefits You Need to Know About

maca

Spicing up your diet with maca may provide you with surprising health benefits you never dreamed existed! Whether you choose to cook maca root, add maca powder to foods, take maca supplements, or apply maca topically to your skin, the maca benefits are (nearly) endless.

What is Maca?

Maca, or maca root, is a vegetable native to the Andes in Peru — and is similar in nature to radishes and turnips. Depending on the type and color of maca you choose, it may taste nutty, sweet like butterscotch, or slightly bitter. Common types of maca include black, yellow, and red maca varieties. Maca is also available in powder, tablet, and capsule form. So there are many ways to get your maca fix!

1. Nutritional Benefits of Maca

Packed with nutrients, maca mainly consists of carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals — and a little bit of protein. Cleveland Clinic notes that maca powder, which is the form of maca many people use, is an excellent source of calcium, potassium, iron, iodine, and B vitamins.

2. A Better Sex Life

Getting a daily dose of maca may help improve your sex life. Cleveland Clinic notes that some evidence shows maca can improve libido and fertility in men and women. A study published in 2008 in CNS Neuroscience and Therapeutics found that subjects taking 3 grams of maca daily showed improvements in libido and sexual dysfunction. A review published in 2012 in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine reports that black and yellow maca improve sperm count and sperm motility in male rats, and red maca extract has a positive impact on the quality of embryos in female mice.

3. Hormone Balance in Women

Maca supplements may help women balance hormone levels, according to a review published in 2006 in the International Journal of Biomedical Sciences. Authors of this review point out that early post-menopausal women who took 2 grams of maca, in capsule form, daily showed improvements in hormone levels and reductions in menopausal symptoms — like night sweats and hot flashes.

4. Anti-Aging Perks

Maca may even help you look younger! Using maca topically appears to help protect skin against ultraviolet radiation, according to the 2012 review in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine. A study published in 2011 in the International Journal of Dermatology found that when maca leaf extract was used on the skin of rats, it helped prevent sunburn and other skin-damaging effects from UVB radiation. Maca-based skincare products are widely available.

5. It May Make You Smarter

Maca, especially black maca, shows promise for improving memory and learning, according to the 2011 review in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Authors of this review say black maca is beneficial for learning and memory in mice, and that central Peruvian natives use maca to improve school performance in kids.

6. Energizing, Mood-Enhancing, and Stress-Reducing Perks

Maca may help boost your mood and leave you feeling energized! Cleveland Clinic reports that maca shows promise for stress management, and the 2011 review in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine says that maca supplementation appears to boost energy, reduce anxiety, and help fight depression.

7. Osteoarthritis Relief

If you suffer from osteoarthritis, maca may be just what the doctor ordered. Maca may help relieve pain and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis, according to the 2011 review. Authors of the review found that taking 1,500 milligrams of maca combined with 300 milligrams of cat’s claw (Uncaria guianensis) twice daily for eight weeks helped improve function, and reduce pain, and stiffness in people with osteoarthritis.

Recommended Dosages

If you’re taking maca supplements, the recommended dosage for adults is 1.5 to 3 grams daily, according to Cleveland Clinic.

Are There Any Health Risks?

If you’re thinking about taking maca supplements or adding maca powder to foods or smoothies, always chat with your doctor first — especially if you’re taking blood thinning medications. Maca may counteract such medications. Cleveland Clinic notes that maca can cause bloating and gassiness, and suggests patients with autoimmune disorders avoid maca.

Bottom Line

More research showing maca benefits is needed, but maca is loaded with nutrients and appears to help improve a variety of health conditions.

Q: Over the last 2 yrs I've been interested in taking a more holistic approach to my health. I heard a radio ad for the dherbs website in NC where I live. At any rate, after perusing the site, I know there are several products I want to use but I don't want to take a large quantity of supplements at once. I am interested in doing a detox and colon cleanse. I want to improve the health of my eyes. I am very mucus laden and don't want to have an invasive procedure done that ENT/Sinus doctors are suggesting so I would like to do something more natural to clear that head congestion. I also have oily skin and have struggled with acne most of my life and my hair is not manageable so I would like to do something about skin/hair. With the multiple areas that I'm trying to improve, what's the best regime for me without having to take a lot of products together at once?

    A:

Start your healing journey by: 1. Change your diet (Go raw foods/vegan: no meats, no dairy products, etc.) 2. Perform the FULL BODY DETOX 3. After the FBD, take daily EYES FORMULA, MUCUS BUSTER FORMULA and ELECTRIC GREENS CELL FOOD.

Q: First let me say Thank you, thank you, thank you. You really helped me to see how/why arthritis manifested in my life. From your answer, I developed my personal matra "Move like the waves in the ocean" and it has really helped to improve my pain drug free. About 10 years ago, I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and was given nuclear radiation which "nuked" my thyroid. So, I was told to take thyroid replacement therapy in the form of synthroid. Of course, I'm not taking it. As a result, my voice is becoming really raspy. What herbs or dherb products would you recommend to help with that? Much love and Respect.

    A:

Wow! Glad to hear your story! And thank you for your words! For your thyroid condition, I recommend IODINE PHOSPHATE, THYROID FORMULA, and SIXTH CHAKRA. Thank you for your interest in Dherbs.Com!

Q: I am starting to look at alternative medicines and food choices very seriously now, in fact I recently wrote a research paper on the subject, while reading your article you mentioned Dr Hulda Clark, I goggled her name and got some good and bad reviews. One article in particular caught my attention. If you could would you please read this article and give me your feedback. I am really interested in alternative medicine and I want to teach my kids about the options that they have. I am currently putting together a binder for my kids with things I have read about alternative medicines, detox, the harm that cooked foods(meats in particular) have on the body etc. This article bothered me and before I include any information on treatment from her clinic I wanted some feedback on this article.

    A:

Hulda offers some very good information but she's a bit extreme in my opinion and she relies too much on gadgets for healing rather than the mind, diet, attitude, lifestyle, etc. The choice is up to you, Beloved, whether to include her clinic! From the article, Hulda's clinic looks very frightening! I probably wouldn't include it!

I have seen 2 urologists that have confirmed that I have enterococcus bacteria in either the prostate of genital area based on semen culture. I have also done testicle ultrasound and CAT scan of the area with good results. Q: I would like to know if that was you on the Al Sharpton show, Monday morning. The show is called “keeping it realâ€. My second question is, do you have any products that would help melasma. So many black women and men suffer with this [facial] hyperpigmentation. The only product that I know that really helps is hydroquinone that many women use today to lighten [bleach] their skin tones. I do not want to use it for that purpose; I have a beautiful skin tone. I just need to lighten the pigmentation that has changed my complexion. The darken colorations make me look older than what I am. I see a lot us blacks with this problem. It is unfortunate that the only product that seems to alleviate the problem is not safe. By the way, I do use sunscreen, only on my face; I allow the rest of my skin to get some sun for its great vitamin D benefits. Thanks

Q: I found out about your website and that you offer different treatments to improve other people's health. My question is that I have a relative, my aunt to be more specific; she suffers from a bipolar disorder which is getting worse and does not improve with any kind of drug. She is getting hospitalized in a mental hospital by tomorrow morning and I do not feel too comfortable with this situation therefore I wanted to ask you about any treatment that you might offer for this type of disorder. I really do not think that hospitalizing her in a mental hospital will do the work, if you could please write back to me by tomorrow. She has tried Reconnective Healing and it seems to help her relax but it does not take the symptoms away.

    A:

I would recommend that your aunt give our Nerves Formula, Central Nervous System Formula, and Brain Booster Formula and Elixir #6 and Elixer #7 a try for bipolar.

Q: Thank you for the cancer info...It is welcome and beyond informative, however, I take issue with your remark that "women would be wise to just accept the fact that they are female by nature and God made them to have (deliver) babies and they should stop trying to compete with and be like men." Part of me is not surprised--men make comments like this all the time. I chalk it up to ignorance, as men enjoy living their entire lives not having to endure periods, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and lord knows what else. So because a woman does not want to have children--at all, or at a particular time in her life--she wants to be a man?! That's an illogical conclusion you are making. So why are there pregnant women with cancer, some of which who have never taken BC pills? Are women entitled to making any sort of control over their reproductive health? What about women who are infertile, naturally? If they develop cancer, is it because they never gave birth to a child? Are you willing to support all of the children that will result from women not being on Birth Control, since many people cannot afford several children on their incomes? This line of reasoning makes some women think that men really need to get over themselves. I think you have been reading too much Freud. Some women, present company included, appreciate our femininity and everything that encompasses being a woman. At the same time, this is not the dark ages--and even then, women chose not to have children during different times in their lives. Surely you are aware that in non-Western countries women utilize natural herbs to control their reproduction or as abortifacients? I am not advocating abortion; my point is that if you are going to criticize women taking BC pills, you may as well extend this criticism to women naturally preventing pregnancy via alternative means.

    A:

Birth control pills play a big role in female reproductive cancers. Women would be wise to just accept the fact that they are female by nature and God made them to have (deliver) babies and they should stop trying to compete with and be like men. In attempting to stop or prevent life (birth control), they are ending up losing their very own lives. And the birth control pills cause cancer in areas of the body that denote femininity (breasts, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, uterus and vagina). This is a form of language here. You have disease and female organ(s) which basically means your disease is specifically related to an issue of femaleness or femininity, that's why the disease manifests in these "female" organs. In attempting to be like and compete with males, females compromise their feminine integrity and goddess nature which "eats them up" (anger, frustration, sadness, etc.) inside. When the cancer appears in any female organ, it serves as a sign or sensor that the problem lies on a deeper metaphysical level pertaining to emotions, thoughts and attitude."

Q: I have had bacterial vaginosis for about 2 years now. My symptoms are not bad, as I only feel a little bit of itching and burning every now and then. But I do have a lot of discharge, which generally actually does not smell foul. The reason is gardnerella. I have tried all kinds of treatments from antibiotics, boric acid, homeopathy and magnetism, but nothing has helped so far. I've been a vegetarian for almost ten years now, although I do eat fish from time to time. I avoid breads, dairy products, eggs and seafood. However, I've been really busy lately and in a lot of stress, so I have been paying less attention to what I eat. I do prefer pretty comfortable clothing though. As far as treatment goes, I am not interested in daily baths or douches (have tried this as well based on a homeopath's recommendation) or anything like that, as I simply don't have the time or the conditions for it. I currently live in a Third World Country. What can and should I do? I am thinking more of supplements etc. I hope you can give me some advice

    A:

Please read our BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS article. It is very detailed and tells you everything you need to know and what to do.

Q: I was on the computer, I came across the article on the big ole butt. In the article you said (paraphrase) that successful women tend to be sick. Are you saying that these women should not try to be successful? in my opinion if black women are overweight, they cannot blame the corporate lifestyle, they have to blame themselves. We are all in control of our own lifestyle, those same corporate black women, if they were working 9-5 at some factory somewhere, they would still be fat. I do agree with you when you stated that many black women lack will power to fast. I think that we lack will power to do anything that is beneficial to us. Yes I do agree with you that the steatopygia female does look like a "pig". their faces tend to take on pig like facial features. Yes you are right that miss steatopygia tends to wear tight pants, (in my opinion that type of backside is stinky looking). So yes there is some parts of the article I do agree with. Far too many of us black women, tend to be stubborn and too defensive. I am glad that your site does exist, because far too many sites like to blame "whitey". You are one of the few black health specialists, that put the blame on us, and you should because our lifestyle is our responsibility.

    A:

No, these women should BECOME successful, but not lose their health and/or souls in the process of becoming successful. The corporate sector has played a great "role" in Black women gaining weight because the jobs are too sedentary and they have access to too much sugary junk which converts to fat because corporate jobs don't allow them to burn off the fat. I've seen this firsthand with many once fine sisters who blew up like houses within a 5 year period. Corporate America was the venue in which Black women CHOSE to let their health go by the wayside, at least the majority of them. Thank you for sharing your views and sentiments on this Dear Sista! Much obliged!

Q: I take B12 (methylcobalamin form) supplements. I take the methylcobalamin form because I'm aware that it's the most active, natural and bioavailable form of B12 that's immediately available for use in the body. And besides it doesn?t have to be converted from cyanocobalamin to methylcobalamin. This statement is of particular interest to me because in your writings you normally speak of vitamins in its natural form (phosphate). Struck some curiosity here! Your thoughts on this please? Should I be taking the Cyanocobalamin form instead?

    A:

The B-12 you're taking is not natural if it is not derived from living substances such as FOOD (fruits, vegetables). We sell B-12 and it is in PHOSPHATE form 100% organic and ingestible).

Take a look at the ingredients of your B12 product and check out the ingredients.

Q: Hello. This is my first time emailing you. I am a 24 year old African American female. I have a younger sister who is 17. She has had health issues every since I can remember. As a baby she had asthma but grew out of it. She has also suffered from allergies to things such as pollen and ragweed as well. But at the age of 9 she woke up one morning totally unable to move and her joints appeared swollen and red. She has never been diagnosed with anything but the symptoms have been treated with an array of different drugs. As time progressed she would randomly continue to get joint swelling and stiffness in her arms legs and hips. Doctors have tested her for lupus and arthritis and test results still say she has none of the above. She suffers also from periodic urinary tract infections, ulcerations of the mouth and fatigue. She recently was told that she was suffering also from a stomach emptying disorder and her body was having a difficult time absorbing nutrients. Just this week she had extreme pain in her upper abdomen and the doctor said it was an enlarged spleen. They did blood work and it turns out that her pancreas levels are off the charts. I kind of hopped all over the place and I left a lot of things out. But do you have any clue what may be going on or what she could do to help her improve her overall quality of life and finally be pain free? I also left out that recently she has started losing hearing in her left ear. What does this all mean?

    A:

Please consider scheduling a 1-hour health consultation (only $100) so as to get at the root of all these problems. She's too young to be going through all of this. Time just won't allow for a detailed written response here. However, I will suggest she perform the FULL BODY DETOX as she sounds pretty toxic. It's good she may start at a young to better her health. She doesn't have to suffer!
