A Daily Walk Lowers Breast Cancer Risk

0-153919865-peoplewalking

Postmenopausal women who are very active or who walk for at least seven hours a week have a reduced risk for breast cancer, according to a new study.

A large body of evidence shows that women taking part in regular physical activity have an approximately 25% lower risk of breast cancer compared to the most inactive.

But still unclear are issues such as whether moderate intensity activity, like walking, imparts a benefit in the absence of vigorous exercise. It is also unclear whether the association differs based on tumour features, such as hormone receptor status, or by individual factors such as a woman’s body mass index (BMI), weight status, and use of postmenopausal hormones.

In addition, while prolonged periods of sitting have been associated with the risk of some cancers, the relation between sitting time and postmenopausal breast cancer risk is not well understood.

This new, and very large study, published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention involved more than 73,000 women and adds to increasing evidence that physical activity reduces the risk of breast cancer in older women.

The women in this study, which was funded by the American Cancer Society, were part of a larger cancer prevention study and had been followed since 1992/1993.

A long term study

All the women provided information on the average number of hours they spent on various physical activities including walking, jogging, swimming, playing tennis, bicycling, and performing aerobic exercises every week, and the number of hours spent in leisure time sitting, including watching television and reading.

With this data the researchers were able to calculate the total hours of metabolic equivalent (MET) per week for each participant. MET is the ratio of the energy spent during a specific activity to the resting metabolic rate.

The researchers found that about 9.2% of the women did not take any physical activity at all. Around 47% reported walking as their only activity. The median MET expenditure among active women was 9.5 MET hours per week, which translates to 3.5 hours of moderately-paced walking.

They found that the most active women with 42 MET hours per week or more (at least one hour of vigorous activity every day) had a 25%t lower risk for breast cancer compared with women who were least active, with less than seven MET hours per week (e.g. moderately-paced walking for two hours a week).

Among women who reported walking as their only activity, those who walked for seven hours or more per week had a 14% lower risk for breast cancer, compared with those who walked for three hours or less. The study did not find any risk associated with time spent sitting.

Benefits from staying active

“Our results clearly support an association between physical activity and postmenopausal breast cancer, with more vigorous activity having a stronger effect,” said lead researcher led by Alpa Patel, Ph.D. of the American Cancer Society.

“Our findings are particularly relevant, as people struggle with conflicting information about how much activity they need to stay healthy. Without any other recreational physical activities, walking on average of at least one hour per day was associated with a modestly lower risk of breast cancer. More strenuous and longer activities lowered the risk even more.”

Current guidelines recommend adults get at least two-and-a-half hours per week of moderate-intensity activity, or 75 minutes per week of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity for overall health. But studies indicate less than half of US adult women are active at these minimum levels. In the UK the picture is much the same with just 56% of women reporting active for at least 30 minutes a day.

Things are slightly better in Australia where 38% of females aged 15 and over are sedentary. The percentage gets higher, however, as women age.

Given that walking is something that most women report doing anyway, “promoting walking as a healthy leisure-time activity could be an effective strategy for increasing physical activity among postmenopausal women,” added Dr. Patel.

Q: Thank you for the cancer info...It is welcome and beyond informative, however, I take issue with your remark that "women would be wise to just accept the fact that they are female by nature and God made them to have (deliver) babies and they should stop trying to compete with and be like men." Part of me is not surprised--men make comments like this all the time. I chalk it up to ignorance, as men enjoy living their entire lives not having to endure periods, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and lord knows what else. So because a woman does not want to have children--at all, or at a particular time in her life--she wants to be a man?! That's an illogical conclusion you are making. So why are there pregnant women with cancer, some of which who have never taken BC pills? Are women entitled to making any sort of control over their reproductive health? What about women who are infertile, naturally? If they develop cancer, is it because they never gave birth to a child? Are you willing to support all of the children that will result from women not being on Birth Control, since many people cannot afford several children on their incomes? This line of reasoning makes some women think that men really need to get over themselves. I think you have been reading too much Freud. Some women, present company included, appreciate our femininity and everything that encompasses being a woman. At the same time, this is not the dark ages--and even then, women chose not to have children during different times in their lives. Surely you are aware that in non-Western countries women utilize natural herbs to control their reproduction or as abortifacients? I am not advocating abortion; my point is that if you are going to criticize women taking BC pills, you may as well extend this criticism to women naturally preventing pregnancy via alternative means.

    A:

Birth control pills play a big role in female reproductive cancers. Women would be wise to just accept the fact that they are female by nature and God made them to have (deliver) babies and they should stop trying to compete with and be like men. In attempting to stop or prevent life (birth control), they are ending up losing their very own lives. And the birth control pills cause cancer in areas of the body that denote femininity (breasts, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, uterus and vagina). This is a form of language here. You have disease and female organ(s) which basically means your disease is specifically related to an issue of femaleness or femininity, that's why the disease manifests in these "female" organs. In attempting to be like and compete with males, females compromise their feminine integrity and goddess nature which "eats them up" (anger, frustration, sadness, etc.) inside. When the cancer appears in any female organ, it serves as a sign or sensor that the problem lies on a deeper metaphysical level pertaining to emotions, thoughts and attitude."

Q: I was diagnosed with breast cancer about 18 months ago and I've been treating the tumor wholistically with no chemo or radiation. The tumor has gradually gotten smaller but I'm concerned that the progress could be improved if my diet was better. I get conflicting information about eating fruits while trying to maintain a high alkaline diet. Should people healing cancer eat fruit?

    A:

Fruits are predominantly alkaline but most warnings about fruit while having cancer stems from the sugars in fruit which cancer can thrive in which is why many healers recommend vegetables instead of fruits. All live foods are good for you when there is cancer because live foods have enzymes.

Q: What do you think about the alternative drug protocel for fighting breast cancer, and the book" This breast stays put." Is there any validity to the claim that itcan be used as an alternative cure for breast cancer

Alternative drug protocol? Drugs CAN'T heal the body from anything! The best prevention from disease is living in harmony with Divine Law. Please read a few of our free health articles if you get the chance.

Q: My sister was diagnosis with breast cancer and also bones cancer. After chemotherapy and radiation treatment she is telling me she feels very tired, she lives in Argentina how can I help her with your advice, I did not know about your herbs when she became sick, I mentioned dherbs to her and she ask me to help.

    A:

She needs to detoxify her body. She's now dealing with toxicity from chemotherapy and radiation on top of cancerous cells so now she must heal twice: from the drugs/radiation and the cancer. I would have her start on the FULL BODY DETOX; have her drink DETOX TEA and RAINFOREST TONIC TEA for starters. The radiation and chemotherapy are harming her. Her diet should be all raw foods and herbs.

Q: I found this health article on the risk of getting cancer from working at night. I'm a night worker. have been for 16 yrs, and my sleeping and eating patterns haven?t been the same since. The article mentions taking melatonin...is that safe and effective? Also do you have any herbal cures for us night timers to reverse the effects of working the graveyard shift? I can sure use them?

    A:

Cancer stems from a host of things, not just one thing like working at night. Disease results from negative thoughts/mindset, negative attitude, poor diet; insalubrious lifestyle, and insalubrious environment. You don't need to take melatonin. Your body (pineal gland) produces it. As a night worker, just make sure when you are sleeping in the day time your room is completely dark, just like how Dracula used to sleep in the darkness of his coffin during the daylight hours. This is why Dracula was a thousand years old but looked young. He slept during the day (which produces melatonin which is an anti-aging hormone) and he operated at night whereby he also produced melatonin. Dude never aged! You do the same, just don't suck on no necks to get blood though -- LOL!!!! And no! There are no herbs to reverse anything that comes from actions or behaviors that are unnatural. You reverse the effects of night-time work by doing the opposite. In your case, it's your job (which you don't want to quit unless you can find another one), so you just get some good sleep during the day in pitch darkness.

Q: Due to what I did with women in previous experiences, from time to time I tend to think, and worry about what my woman might do. She's a wonderful lady-she really is; and she's been upfront, and honest from the get go. But, I can get a little pessimistic about the relationship. But, I do that because I know how slick women can be. I've been on the receiving end of that slickness! So again, from time to time, that creeps up in my thoughts. And yes, I have been absolutely committed to her as well.

    A:

What you focus on with emotion is what you attract according to the law of attraction. If you continue to give these negative thoughts, your focus you will manifest this outcome. You have to consciously change this pattern to get out of your loop. When you feellike consciously, remind yourself of what you DO want. Allow yourself to create what you really want, which is to feel calm and in love with your amazin woman.

Q: I am a 64yr. female, breast cancer survivor of 4 years, and have had bilateral knee replacements. I currently take Arimidex, a hormone blocker-my cancer was hormone fed- and prilosec for acid reflux. I have been diagnosed with an irregular heart beat with the lower left chamber of the heart not relaxing enough to fill with needed blood supply to pump blood to my entire body. I was put on Atenolol to reduce my blood pressure but was allergic to it. A new prescription (Lopressor) has been recommended. I do not want to continue to add medicines with all of the side effects. What regimen would your recommend to address all of my concerns? I am completing your FULL BODY DETOX program.

    A:

I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT YOU PERFORM THE FULL BODY DETOX FIRST AND FOREMOST.

Q: I am African American and I have a two-week-old baby girl. I breast feed her, she still spits up all the time and sometimes it comes out through her nose. Saliva builds up in her mouth where it is difficult for her to breathe. She has thick white film on her tongue, and she has small tiny red bumps all over her face. I desperately need some advice to cure these ailments.

    A:

Your baby's colon is taxed and it sounds like from YOUR diet. Watch what you eat for your baby's sake. Start taking MUCUS BUSTER FORMULA and DHERBS 10-DAY SUPREME COLON CLEANSE. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Her face is breaking out because her colon is not working. The skin is the largest organ of elimination so the skin is being used to help the baby eliminate!

Q: I have a daughter that had a sporadic and spontaneous breast discharge in 2006. I took her to a breast specialist and he explained what he thought it might be. Now 2 yrs later she had blood coming from the other breast I took her back to the doctor and he had her go for a sonogram. The results came back and the report said it didn't show any inflammation or infection, however I'm not satisfied. Cancer runs in the family and I'm alarmed. Can you please recommend what I can give her???

    A:

Being alarmed is not good. Focus on the positive! Good reading: MENTAL SCIENCE MANUAL e-book (see E-Book section in our on-line store). Have the daughter start detoxing seasonally. FULL BODY DETOX and TOTAL WOMAN CLEANSE would be ideal. There's also FEMALE BREAST FORMULA (a good daily maintenance formula) and the FEMALE BREAST OIL.

Q: I have a friend who has been said to have cancer. First diagnosed in the breast, now in the lungs back and bones. I told her about the full body cleanse and the dietary regimen. I was wondering if this is something that you think would benefit her at this stage. If so what other things do you think she could look into?

    A:

The Full Body Cleanse is best! This cleanse can detoxify the body and help remove the toxicity that your friend's body is suffering from.

She should drink 2-4 cups of the Full Body Cleanse Tea too to give her body an extra boost!

After detoxing, I would have her take 5 capsules of Electric Greens every 2-3 hours every day in addition to drinking raw vegetable juice every day. This can further help eliminate toxicity in her body once she completes the cleanse.

She should avoid eating any cooked foods, just raw foods!

She should bathe daily in moderately hot water, sea salt and 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide. More tips and pointers can be found in the Full Body Detox Companion (available on-line).

Q: I was reading about a famous black author who died of brain cancer and I wanted to know what does it mean on a metaphysical level? Cancer of the brain, breast, colon, mouth. What does this signify other than extreme toxicity? What does poor circulation mean metaphysically speaking? Do you think there is a link between hair dyes, hair relaxers (burners) and brain cancer and lupus among black females. This is "off the cuff" but I hate seeing black females with straightened hair and hair coloring. I really hate it. I hate long claws (fake fingernails).

    A:

Metaphysically, cancer denotes a feeling being eaten up (on the inside) by some emotion or emotions, always negative emotions. Mouth cancer - the person refused to speak out their hurt, anger, pain, etc. Breast cancer - the female failed to get things off of her chest or neglected caring for herself (nurturing herself, her wounds and pains, etc.). Colon cancer - the person couldn't stomach things but failed to release what was emotionally eating away at them.

Metaphysically speaking, poor circulation means your "life flow" is stagnant due to the burdens of life "weighing you down." Most people with poor circulation have weight issues. In addition they may be "poor" and their cash flow does not "circulate" the way they'd would like and so worries about bills and other financial responsibility makes them eat away their worries whereby they gain weight and hamper their bodily circulation.

And yes, chemicals in hair products (dyes, conditioners, relaxers) are playing a role in certain cancers of the head (i.e. brain cancer).

Q: Hi. I'm a 39 year old female who had a lump in her breast removed but it came back six months later. So I tried a poultice for three days on it and I don't know what went wrong. Now it"s like my whole lymphatic system leading to my breast is shut off. There is swelling and hardness of my tissue in my breast. I went to a naturopath doctor who said that it wasn't cancer but did not give me any solution to my problem. This has been going on now for three months and I'm very much in distress but I don't want to go to a conventional doctor to have my breast removed. Is there any natural remedy for me?

    A:

I'm working on a new breast care article at present. Perform the Full Body Detox and rub on our FEMALE BREAST OILsimultaneously. Drinking FEMALE HEALTH TEA is also ideal. Hang in there and think positive. You'll be alright, as long as you believe you will.

Q: The first time I had cancer it was uterine cancer where they did a hysterectomy. Now she has cancer in her liver, kidneys, on her stomach lining and spine. I am very concerned with my health so you may be correct. However, how do I deal with the sores that have manifested already? I am starting to meditate more to help me deal with my fears and emotions. What do you recommend?

    A:

Purchase our NEW MENTAL SCIENCE MANUAL E-Book that helps you work on your mind, thoughts, and emotions - the root of healing! Read the article "SEA SALT SOAKS" and begin doing those. I would suggest you perform the TOTAL WOMAN CLEANSE. Your body is telling you that you need to deal with past sexual hang-ups or look more into your sexuality and be at peace with yourself. You may want to consider a consultation as well!

Q: I am a two-year breast cancer survivor and I take Tamoxifen 20MG daily and it decreases libido and causes mild hot flashes, my question to you is if I take the BUNNY RABBIT Formula will it interfere with the Tamoxifen? Please respond at your earliest. Thx,

    A:

YES it will interfere! Because Tamoxifen is a drug and thus poisonous and herbs work to remove poisons from the body!
