A Kundalini Yogi’s 4 Morning Tips For A Blissful Day

Snatam Kaur is a teacher and musician in the Kundalini yoga tradition, known for her bestselling kirtan albums (you’ve definitely heard her popular recording, “Longtime Sun”). As a practicing Kundalini yogi, she follows a structured series of morning practices, which include donning all white and chanting while wearing a head covering. While you might not be ready to introduce sartorial elements into your meditation practice, here, she shares the Kundalini morning rituals that can help you face each day with peace and joy.

One name for any spiritual practice done with dedication is Sādhanā. I have practiced Sādhanā in one shape or form for most of my life. Now, at 42 years old, am I an enlightened being? Well, hardly. However, I remember my spiritual teacher, Yogi Bhajan (who brought Kundalini yoga to the West in 1968 and was both my parents’ and my teacher) saying, “If you want to be enlightened, be a light!” And while I can’t read auras, or read your mind, or know what will happen to me tomorrow, or even why it happened to me yesterday, I do have a light to tap into, every day. This light brings me tremendous joy and peace, and is without a doubt my saving grace. It gives me a way to shift my inner paradigm toward my dharma: to live in service to all through my life, my work, and my being.

In 1992, Yogi Bhajan offered the Aquarian Sādhanā to help us thrive and remain balanced in a world with ever-increasing information, technology, and sources of stress and pressure. The Sādhanā includes a wake-up routine, a recitation, yoga, chanting, prayer, and finally a conscious act of surrendering to the Divine. Drawing from that, the following tips are some simple yet totally effective morning yogic techniques to help you enjoy living in your body temple.

1. Clear out mucus.

Yogīs everywhere brush their teeth before meditating because it cleans out bacteria from the mouth. Additionally, after you finish brushing your teeth, use your toothbrush to clean your tongue all the way back to your throat. This will make you gag a little bit, which helps clear mucus from your respiratory system.

2. Kick-start your digestion.

After you have brushed your teeth, drink a large glass of warm water. If your digestion is good and you are getting enough sleep, at this point you can have a bowel movement. As yogīs, we try to have a bowel movement at the beginning of each day, to let out what was put in yesterday before we consume more food today. Plus, having an empty gut for meditation is a blissful experience.

3. Mindfully take care of your hair.

Kundalini means “Lock of the Beloved.” Needless to say, hair is sacred in the Kundalini yoga tradition. From an early age, my mother taught me to attend to my hair with great attention, and I love the feeling of combing my hair in the morning with love and care. In this tradition, we wash our hair every 72 hours, and I find that following this guideline increases my mental clarity. The recommendation is to wash your hair and let the sun dry it naturally. Try to use a natural fiber comb, preferably made of wood, or a brush with natural bristles, and comb it in the morning to support the Kundalini rising. The yogīs see hair as a natural conduit of solar energy: Combing it and placing it in a spiral shape at the top of the head brings all of this subtle light energy to work. At night, we comb the hair down to promote relaxation.

4. Take a cold shower.

Cold showers offer a lot of benefits: As the cold water hits our skin, blood rushes up to open the capillaries. Then the blood moves to our internal organs as a means of protection, and this process releases excess heat from the body. When blood moves this way, it becomes oxygenated and flushes the entire body, which benefits our skin, organs, and lymphatic and endocrine systems. The cold water, especially when accompanied with massage, really aids your skin and complexion. The whole experience totally recharges the nervous system; it also increases the parasympathetic reflex: our capacity to handle stress successfully. In my experience, taking cold showers brings a steadiness to my energy, and they help me remain uplifted and peaceful throughout the whole day.

    Q: Dear Yogi, I read an article on your site about reverse Kundalini (anal sex). I don't know if you can answer my question or not - originally I was going to pose it to "Ask the Guru", but in my limited understanding, Kundalini is tied into yoga. He was a rapist, long story short and an error in judgement on my part. Though my intuition was screaming at me the whole time. I look at the experience as pushing me further along my path and teaching me to trust, love, respect myself, and defend my boundaries. What concerns me is that I feel that experience is still trapped within me to a degree, and I am worried that it will manifest into a disease. Often when I meditate on my root chakra I start crying. Part of me believes that I can't force anything, just have to let the process unfold in its own time. There is so much info out there that I find it overwhelming, and it is hard to know which to trust. So I have just been going with what resonates with me as far as technique. If you could offer me any advice, I would be grateful.

    Hello, I would like to first thank you for sharing your story and your experience. It sounds like you are devoting time and attention to the many things, that will help foster a sustained health and healing for you in life. As you have recognized, it is very helpful for us to take intuition very seriously and to honor this innate ability to discern whether a situation will be harmful or beneficial to our growth and experience as humans. Very often the circumstances and challenges presented to us in life, as happened in yours, serve as great teachers in allowing us to witness our own great strength, compassion, and value. I am glad to hear that you have been able to take the very difficult situation you found yourself in and use your experience to create a better understanding of yourself in the process. While it is true that we tend to develop patterns of holding and habitual ways of holding tension within the body; this does not mean that there are not steps you can take to move through such a body, mind, and spirit experience. The fact that you are crying upon meditating on your root chakra is a sign that you have made yourself available to the grief that naturally accompanies traumatic situations such as the one you experienced. Keep in mind that when we deeply grieve, our bodies are able to express the energy that may have potentially been repressed during this experience. The energy of the root chakra is all about our ability to feel safe, strong, and supported. The violation of this energy can leave one feeling ungrounded and striving for our self-preservation. Try not to become fixated on the worries you are having about the experience arising as disease in your body, as worrying can lead to increased levels of chronic stress, which will potentially create an internal environment more vulnerable to disease - which is what you are trying to avoid. It might be nice for you to meditate on your right to be here, to exist on this planet, and to be valued. It may also be very nice for you to take some restorative yoga classes, which can be grounding and stimulating to the parasympathetic nervous system (assists in the healing process). Recognize that the body may be holding energy in a direct response to a real threat, but begin to create a safe, loving and supportive environment to allow yourself to begin to be able to let go of this holding as you feel safe. When working to heal the first chakra, it is helpful to get in touch with the direct experience of the sensations of the body and become aware of the physical experience of the body. This can be done with the assistance of an expert, to help you change the physical expression of your felt experience. We could also do something called "body dialogue" to put you more deeply in touch with what the physical expression you are experiencing has to teach you about how you are inhabiting the world you are in. There are also many forms of grounding exercises which can help to balance the first chakra.     Q: My question is about hair loss. I am a 45 year old African American female. I started losing my hair about 15 years ago. I specifically remember unusual symptoms before it started to fall out. First, my entire scalp had a burning sensation, and it was very tender to the touch. It was very difficult to brush, comb and wash. Then after that, I am not sure how much longer after, but a dry patch of skin developed toward the back of my head (approximately 1 inch in diameter). I was able to peel it off and pull it through the strains of hair (very weird). That happened a couple of times and not too long after that, my hair started to fall out in large amounts for a fairly long period of time. At the moment I would say that I am mostly bald with hair mostly around the edges. Also I would like to mention that hair started to grow on my chest BUT I started to lose hair in my vaginal area. Sorry if some of this sounds sketchy but it's been 15 years!! I will try to give you a little bit of my history. I am 5'8" and 135lbs. I would say that for the most part, I have been an athlete all my life. My menses were very irregular sometimes and/or absent for long periods of time. When my menses were present, I had very bad cramps and clotting. My menses are now very regular and I hardly have any cramps, my flow is light and very little clotting. I would have to say that it is now a pleasure to have my "period". This also might be a result from switching my diet to a vegetarian diet. I have been a vegetarian for about 16 years. I would say 20% is dairy, but after reading your articles, I am trying my best to become vegan, hopefully even a raw foodist. I also eat tofu. I have never had hair problems growing up. I did get relaxers, but only twice a year. I have had my appendix removed when I was in elementary school. My bowel movements are usually once a day. (I know it needs to be 3.) So anyway, I have been to a couple of medical doctors to no avail, so now I am coming to you. I just received the following products from your company today (10-06-08).     Q: Hello, I am 33 yrs. old and In the middle of my head my hair started to thin. Hair loss does not run in the family. I have heard several reasons from braiding to much, twisting to much, because my right ovary was removed, because of the mercury fillings that was used on my teeth.     Q: I was online searching for some natural treatments for hair growth in Black Men when I came across your article. I must say that I believe it was so on point that I decided not to look any further. I'm 44 years of age and started noticing my hair thinning when about 12 years ago. I was one of those that you wrote about in your article chasing a lifestyle that is no longer an interest to me.
