Acid to Alkaline

The concept of alkalinity is becoming more well-known today than ever before. As many people suffer inflammation that leads to disease, pain and a host of other health issues, we’re starting to realize it’s time we turn to our diets for an answer. The human body’s pH level plays an important role in overall function and health. Your kidneys and lungs attempts to maintain a slightly alkaline pH of 7.4 when the body receives what it needs, with 1 being the most acidic and 14 being the most alkaline. Diet has a large role in its ability to maintain that beautiful balance of 7.4, and while the body can actually be too alkaline, it’s more common for people to be overly acidic. An overly acidic body is known as acidosis, at which point the body can not function properly as it should. This can lead to heart disease, general joint pain, diabetes, cancer, and even just depression.

Animal-based foods are the most inflammatory foods that exist, along with sugar, alcohol, refined grains, highly processed foods, junk foods, fast food, caffeine, sodas, and yes, sadly, even chocolate’s naturally acidic. The key is to reduce as many acidic foods in your diet as possible, emphasizing naturally more alkaline foods like greens, vegetables, fruits, whole grains, raw nuts and seeds (versus roasted), beans, legumes, and most common superfoods out there. Herbs and spices are also more alkaline than acidic foods listed above, and many are actually anti-inflammatory and boost immune function just like whole foods do.

But even some healthy, whole foods are naturally acidic by nature. Does this make them bad for us? No, and here’s why: Plant-based foods are naturally more alkaline than animal-based sources, specifically when they come from whole foods versus processed foods. They contribute to an over alkaline body when a balanced, healthy diet of a variety of plant-based foods are eaten, therefore the small details of if a certain bean is slightly more alkaline than another really won’t effect your health as much as the acidic foods above will. Many of these naturally acidic plant-based foods actually alkalize the body once they enter the bloodstream. This happens because the minerals (calcium, magnesium, potassium, etc.) in these foods mix with our blood and create an alkalizing effect. Pretty incredible, right?

Here are some of the best examples:

1. Lemons

Lemons are known as one of the most alkalizing foods out there, even though they’re acidic by nature. They’re a high source of vitamin C, almost completely void of natural sugars, full of enzymes, and come with many benefits such as boosting digestion, taking care of the liver, cleansing, and improving immune function. They’re also pretty tasty! You can drink the classic glass of water with lemon, or add lemon to herbal tea, use it in salad dressing recipes, or can just use it to boost the flavor anywhere it’s added to. It’s also great in green juice and even makes a nice addition to a green smoothie!

2. Tomatoes

Tomatoes are also very acidic on the outside of the body, which is one reason they can cause irritation to the mouth for many people if they’re eaten in excess. But once consumed, raw tomatoes also promote alkalinity in the blood. And while cooked tomatoes do improve the lycopene uptake in the body, (the antioxidant they’re so well-known for), other nutrients in tomatoes are actually higher when eaten in raw form. They’re also more acidic when cooked. The bottom line? Eat a mix of raw and cooked tomatoes. Grape tomatoes make the perfect snack anytime, and slices of fresh Roma tomatoes make incredible salad toppers. Tomatoes are a great source of vitamin C, enzymes, a good source of Vitamin B6, and a wonderful food to satisfy the body’s unami taste bud needs. See more ways to use them here!

3. Oranges

Oranges are such incredible foods! They’re packed with calcium, actually contain 4 percent protein, are a good source of vitamin B6, and a great hydrating fruit. They’re also very easy to digest and a good source of soluble fiber. Most all citrus, oranges included, are naturally acidic on their exterior, but all fruits and vegetables promote an alkaline body once eaten. Oranges are a star here due to their high enzyme content, cleansing properties and immune-boosting properties. Eat them in slices for a snack, add some chunks to oatmeal or quinoa porridge, add them to smoothies, or use them however else you want.

4. Pineapple

Pineapple is possibly one of the best fruits you could eat. Ignore those telling you it’s too high in sugar- this fruit is so good for you, it shouldn’t be overlooked. Though acidic by nature, it also helps the body achieve a more alkaline state. Pineapple heals the gut lining, tames indigestion and bloating, helps with constipation, and it alkalizes the entire body. It’s one of the best foods recommended for joint pain and arthritis, it improves immunity and one cup contains over your whole day’s worth of vitamin C content. Vitamin C helps boost immune function, reduces stress, improves digestion and can help you recover more quickly after workouts. Pineapple is also high in water and one of the least sprayed crops when it comes to pesticides, though you should choose non-GMO when possible since it’s now being genetically modified by major brands. Snack on it, use it in smoothies, on salads, add it to breakfast, just be sure you eat it!

5.  Cayenne Pepper

Most spices like black pepper, nutmeg and a few others are naturally acidic as well. Cayenneis another, though once eaten, it becomes extremely alkalizing to the body. It also aids in cleansing and digestion, contains mood-boosting nutrients, and has even been shown to boost metabolic function. No need to go dousing it on everything, just add a bit of this spice on a salad, baked sweet potato, or in any entree of choice. Or, if you’re brave, add a dash to your green juice or green smoothie!

Other good examples of naturally acidic foods that promote alkalinity are: grapefruits, limes, brown rice, berries, apples, pears, legumes, and peppers just to name a handful. A whole foods, plant-based diet high in as many raw foods as possible will help the body achieve alkalinity much more easily. This makes eating cooked foods and even that occasional square of vegan dark chocolate much less harmless in the grand scheme of things!

See some other lesser known alkaline foods here to add in your diet and you’ll be well on your way to a healthy body to help you feel your best in no time!

Q: I was wondering in your list you include foods that are classified as acidic (AC). I thought we were to avoid acidic foods so we can stay alkaline or do we need some acidic foods? I am guessing that there is a better explanation but please let me know. My partner and I have changed our diet after watching your videos and Dr Sebi’s video and we are very curious about this.

    A:

I TRUST YOU READ MY ARTICLE THAT COVERS THESE FOODS BELOW. BELOVED, ACID FOODS ARE NOT BAD (UNHEALTHY) AND IN FACT YOU NEED SOME ACID FOODS TO BALANCE OUT THE DIET. THE PROBLEM IS WITH ACID-FORMING FOODS (COOKED FOODS: MEAT, DAIRY, REFINED STARCHES, REFINED GRAINS, ETC.). SO THERE'S A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ACID FOODS AND ACID-FORMING FOODS. AND YOU DO KNOW THAT MOST OF WHAT WE ARE EATING IS HYBRIDIZED, RIGHT? WE ARE NOT IN CONTROL OF WHAT WE ARE EATING TODAY. EVEN DR. SEBI EATS HYBRIDIZED FOODS. HE CAN'T HELP IT. WE DON'T CONTROL THE FOOD SUPPLY. REMEMBER, MA'AM: BALANCE IN ALL THINGS. SOME ACID FOODS ARE GOOD AND NECESSARY BUT ACID-FORMING FOODS ARE UNHEALTHY AS THEY CREATE MUCUS IN THE BODY.

Q: A lot of nuts & seeds that are on the food chart are acidic. Because our body should be alkaline during the cleanse is it ok to eat them?

    A:

Please see the article "UNDERSTANDING ACIDIC VS. ACID-FORMING" in our articles section for the answer you seek and require.

Q: I have incorporated fish into my diet because I have been craving. Is moderation okay.... meaning my fruits for breakfast a regular lunch with salad and a salad for dinner okay to pretty much moderate other foods? It is challenging for me to become a vegan. Do you have any suggestions on how to still eat healthy to maintain an alkalized body with certain foods with moderation that are not raw? I still drink my green veggies at least twice a day. I am praying that my results will be negative.

    A:

FISH IN MODERATION IS OKAY FOR YOU. TO MAINTAIN ALKALINITY, DESPITE THE ACID-FORMING THINGS YOU EAT, JUST MAKE SURE TO EAT AS MANY GREEN FOODS AS POSSIBLE. YOU CAN ALSO TAKE 6 CAPSULES OF ELECTRIC GREENS CELL FOOD TOO! YOU’RE DOING GOOD SO KEEP YOUR THOUGHTS POSITIVE AND ON YOUR DESIRES.

Q: My youngest son had a very bright green stool last night and I saw that it means acidic foods that he has eaten... I am kind of just getting the hang of this eating right and haven't been hard on the kids with it... what I want to know is what am I supposed to feed a two year old that won't hurt him? I want him to be healthy.

    A:

Feed him food: fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, and some grains! Try vegan food options. You can find many entrees at Whole Foods Market!

Q: Thank you for always answering my questions. I have about two more. Okay, I'm currently living overseas where I'm limited on raw fresh foods (vegetables and fruits). I want to do the detox but I'm concerned that I won't have everything as far as raw food to be successful. I have access to basics (apples, oranges, bananas, tomatoes, avocados, melons, lettuce, cabbage, bean spouts, carrots, celery, peppers, green beans, peas, bagged nuts,) but nothing exotic by any means. Then I was told to safely eat some of the food in the local economy that we should wash it with a 5% bleach solution (is that safe...and if on the detox I'm thinking that would be a no go). Two questions?Given the mentioned availability of raw foods could I be able to successfully complete the detox (I don't have an issue with eating the same things over and over again) and two what can I do to clean local produce so that its safe for consumption? Apparently part of the issue is that they use human feces to fertilize. Thank you for your time and I look forward to your response

    A:

Yes, it seems you have enough raw food available to you to complete the cleanse.

In order to clean local produce, rinse thoroughly with apple cider vinegar to "disinfect" it. If apple cider vinegar is unavailable, just use water.

Q: What Are Some Natural Sweet Treats (Junk Foods) I can Consume? Under free will you can consume what you like, but healthier products are best. You will find plenty of "healthier" snack, treat, and junk foods at good health food stores such as Whole Foods Market, PCC Natural Food Stores, Erewhon, Trader Joes, Natural Grocers, New Frontiers, etc. Just make sure to abstain from salt, sugar, and other harmful chemicals in the products you buy. We list many companies of alternative foods and products (and their website addresses) in our ALTERNATIVE DIET AND LIFESTYLES MANUAL.

Q: I'm currently on day 3 of the FULL BODY DETOX and would like to know what exactly I can eat. I've only had water, tea, and oranges for breakfast, salads for lunch and dinner with a few cashew nuts in between. I would like to know exactly what you mean by combining foods together. Example, oranges and apples, are you saying they're not to be eaten together? If not, why?

    A:

The ALTERNATIVE DIET AND LIFESTYLES MANUAL list great food alternatives during the detox. Food combining means do not eat foods not in the same category. Don't mix an acid fruit with a melon fruit. Don't mix fruit with vegetables. Don't mix acid fruit with sweet fruit, etc. Eat sweet fruit with other sweet fruit. Eat sub-acid fruit with sub-acid fruit. You wouldn't eat an orange (acid fruit) with an apple (sub-acid fruit). They are not in the same family.

Q: Could you please supply me with a number of different foods that are OK to eat or a good place to shop for reasonable foods while on the Full Body Detox? I am waiting for my shipment to come and I'm not exactly sure what foods I should be eating?

    A:

YOU WILL BE EATING ALL RAW FOODS. PLEASE READ OUR ARTICLE â€WHAT IS RAW FOODS†LOCATED ON OUR SITE UNDER ARTICLES. RAW FOODS IS RAW FRUITS, VEGETABLES, SEEDS, AND NUTS. NOTHING COOKED! NO MEAT, DAIRY PRODUCTS, REFINED GRAINS AND STARCHES, ETC. A GOOD PLACE TO SHOP WOULD BE WHOLE FOODS MARKET AND TRADER JOES.

Q: On WebMD there is information stating that high fiber foods such as raw fruits, and vegetables can irritate or flare up Crohn's disease. But, your article on Chron's disease says to switch to a vegan diet after detoxing. Why would raw fruits and vegetables flare up Chron's disease? Why do your articles suggest to eat raw fruits and veggies when people say it can irritate the disease?

    A:

We don't subscribe to that. We do our own homework at Dherbs.com. There is no confusion at Dherbs because we use logic, reason, common sense, intuition, wisdom, etc. So we are not confused in regards to food and health.

Q: I am trying to monitor my ph level. This morning, I did a urine sample, and it turned yellowish green. So, my body is not alkaline. I understand that if I want to get a negative test results from the docs. I need to be alkaline. Because disease can't survive in this state. My question then is, how long does ones body have to be alkaline before a viral infection (HSV,HPV,HIV) will go away and you can be healed?

    A:

Give it about 6-12 months. Alkaline levels may be good if the thought of having a disease is in the mind, then everything is for naught. The healing must be wholistic. Get your mind right! Consider reading "The Mental Science Manual" e-book.

Q: Joe was 14 when a fever blister escalated to an acidic, thrush, bacterial order in the mouth. After 3 days his doctor admitted him to the hospital. They tried everything even shutting his immune system down. He was there for 2 weeks, but this problem reoccurred more often in the winter of Baton Rouge, La. We are from LA, CA maybe it's the difference in climates and I believe he should detox gently with a good ph balance. What do you think?

    A:

I suggest you start using our ORAL ANTISEPTIC SPRAY and give the CHILDREN'S DETOX a try! It is stupid of doctors to shut the immune system down. Give these formulas a try (plus GOLDENSEAL & ECHINACEA EXTRACT) and watch the results!

Q: What types of grains are allowed with the raw foods diet during the FULL BODY DETOX? Are whole grain breads and cereal bars ok? Please clarify. Also, should I stop taking my birth control pill while on the detox? I hear it will cancel out anyway?

    A:

IN REFERENCE TO GRAINS, ONLY SPROUTED GRAINS. NO CEREAL AND CREAL BARS! OF COURSE STOP TAKING YOUR BIRTH CONTROL PILL BECAUSE THE FULL BODY DETOX TARGETS ALL TOXINS AND POISONS AND MAN-MADE/PHARMACEUTICAL BIRTH CONTROL PILLS ARE TOXIC AND POISONOUS. IT WILL MOST CERTAINLY CANCEL OUT.

Q: I am in need of cleansing my body and weight removal! (Removal and not loss because I don't want to find it again)! I need to remove about 80 pounds of unhealthy weight from my body and would like to do so in a natural way. I looked at both your Female Cleanse and the Full Body Cleanse, but don't know which is a better option for me to follow right now? I eat a lot of organic foods, I juice (some) but need to increase my water intake (A LOT). I don't drink much soda at all and when I do it is organic carbonated lemonade. I realize carbonated drinks are not good for us and limit how much I drink. My body lets me know when I have eaten something that is not good for me by causing my hands and feet to swell. To reduce this I drink water. I am allergic to wheat and try to stay away from it as much as possible. I have few ailments and have started working out again (cardio and weight training). I also looked at your weight loss products, but thought I should maybe detox first. What do you think? Any assistance you can offer on your products and which ones I should take is of great appreciation.

A: The best thing for you is the Full Body Cleanse. The Full Body Cleanse will allow you to remove unwanted weight, while also optimizing your entier body so that you can maintain that weight and live a healthier lifestyle.

Q: I am on my 3rd day of the fully body cleansing. I am definitely doing this to lose weight. I am a 52 year old, black, Christian, wife, mother to 21 and 14 year old girls, legal secretary who is 450 lbs. I am to the point now where if I don't do this I'm going to be housebound. I can barely move some days that is why I started this because I feel so unhealthy. I have a question about the nuts. I got all gun-ho and ordered $135.00 worth of organic nuts from nuts.com. I got raisins, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, walnuts, pecans, pistachios and cashews and mixed them all up together (well I purchased 2 lbs of each but I only mixed up 1 lb of each together). Anyway, I was reading about how much calories are in nuts. Should I not pay attention to that because I was consuming a lot of calories in the first place or do I have to watch how many nuts I eat? I have put some nuts in a sandwich bags and basically filled it up and that is supposed to be my nuts ration for the day. I am also eating fruits and vegetables. So far the fruit have been grapes, grapefruit, red apples, pears, green apples and bananas. The vegetables have all been in a salad: tomatoes, celery spinach leaves, carrots, mixed in balsamic vinaigrette. I only ate the salad Monday night all the other times I have just eaten the fruit and nuts. I am also consuming approximately 75-100 oz of water. Sorry I’m long winded I just wanted you to get the entire picture.

    A:

Thanks for the question, I can definitely help you.

I am currently writing an eBook for www.dherbs.com called "Losing weight the healthy way." I have been a weight loss counselor for many years. I am also a health coach, personal trainer, bodymind nutritionist, and a vegan lifestyle coach.

When it comes to weight loss most programs want you to lose weight to get healthy. My mindset is to get healthy and lose weight.

In my health/fitness/nutrition coaching program www.theveganeffect.com I use a lowfat/high carb/ high raw/ nutrient dense/ high alkaline diet to achieve long term weight loss success. So far I am 100 percent in getting clients long lasting weight loss. If you are interested in my program please fill out the health history form on the side of the web page. We could have a free 1 hour initial consultation over skype to see how I can best help you.

Nuts are best kept to a minimum if you use them at all. Nuts are extremely high in fat and have the opposite omega 3- omega 6 ratio that is optimal for health. Seeds are best as far as ratios are concerned. Also nuts are truly easy to over eat and cause your nutrient ratios to be off.

A healthy vegan diet is a high raw fruitarian diet.

    Example:

Breakfast: green smoothie. (500-1000 calories of fruits blended with a handful of greens and water)

Bridge: Dates and strawberries (500 calories)

Lunch: Salad with low sugar fruits (cucumber, tomato, squash, bell peppers) topped with fruit, beans, psuedo grains,

    Bridge: 2-3 apples

Dinner: Raw wraps (collard greens) with low sugar fruit and tahini

    Snack: Sorbet

    Hope this helps

Q: I am interested in starting the Full Body Detox program. At this time, I would like to know which program is best for me. At current, I have started removing things from my diet as of 2 weeks ago (pork, chicken, red meat, I'm trying with the fish but it's hard!) I am not eating cheese but I still eat yogurt and every now and then I will eat a boiled egg (egg whites). I have removed soda from my diet, no coffee, I drink herbal or green tea, pomegranate juice or orange juice and I drink filtered water (I have a countertop filter that I change every 6 months and the Brita pitcher that I change every 2 months). Along with the supplement, is there an eating plan that you can suggest for me? I am eating more fruits and vegetables, but I would welcome suggestions on certain foods that I can eat while I begin my cleansing.

    A:

The Full Body Detox kit comes with a prescribed dietary plan and notifies a person what they can and cannot eat during the detox.

Q: Is there such thing as, cleansing too much? From May - July I did a 40 day cleanse. The cleanse was pretty much ridding my diet of refined sugar, flour, alcohol, and animal product for much of the time. I just recently finished the Total Body Cleanse, and will be finishing my series of cleanses with the Total Woman's Cleanse. I personally feel fine, but people keep warning me about over cleansing. Also, bringing up the issue of your body being stripped of the good bacteria (along with the bad). But, I"ve taken probiotic pills (1-2) virtually everyday througout all of my cleanses. Should I be concerned with overcleansing? After this initial year of hard core cleansing, I plan to cleanse maybe once or twice a year. What are you thoughts on probiotics? Like I mentioned, I am taking pills. But I'd like to find foods that provide all that I need so I don't have to take pills.

    A:

Many people are concerned about what happens to the beneficial intestinal flora after colonics are performed. Personally, I think many people put too much energy into worrying about something so inconsequential. If you're really worried about the beneficial intestinal flora after your colonic, you could always take a few capsules of acidophilus (acidophilus bifidus) or a liquid form of acidophilus (dairy-free, of course). I have never taken an acidophilus product after a colonic. I know Nature and my body too well. I know that my body naturally produces everything sold by man in a bottle, and that is purchased from a health food store, including beneficial flora or bacteria. I simply drink a minimum of 4 ounces of vegetable juice after my colonic sessions. If you're into carrot juice, carrot juice is just as effective as acidophilus in restoring good bacteria in the intestines. Juiced cantaloupe is even better than carrot juice in restoring the beneficial flora. Other natural substances that will help the body to repopulate beneficial flora or good bacteria in the intestines include: Blue Green algae, Spirulina, Chlorella, Irish Moss, Kelp, Bladderwrack, Dulse, Ginger, Cloves, Cayenne, Black Walnut Hull, and Carrot powder. Stop listening to these naysayers and keep doing YOU! You're on the right path!
