Cheap Meat Comes At A High Cost

Nestled in the fields of Nebraska is a farmhouse of horrors where government scientists experiment on pigs, cows and sheep with disturbing results and hardly any oversight. The purpose of this little-known, taxpayer-funded mad science is all in the name: The U.S. Meat Animal Research Center exists to maximize the meat industry’s bottom line.

This is hardly the first sign of meat industry profits at the expense of animal welfare. Undercover investigations have revealed the cramped, cruel conditions in factory farms designed to raise as many animals, as quickly and with as much meat on their bones as possible.

And it’s not just the animals raised for food that face cruelty in the process of putting meat on the table. In 2013, more than two million native animals were killed by Wildlife Services (another program bankrolled by taxpayers that gets little attention or oversight), often at the behest of the livestock industry. The methods used to kill wolves, coyotes and even prairie dogs are just as barbaric as the practices found behind closed factory farm doors: Wild animals are killed by exploding poison caps, suffering in inhumane traps and being gunned down by men in airplanes and helicopters.

How did we get here?

There’s not really a single, simple answer. The path is full of subsidies and lobbying, secrets and disinformation, profits and consumer expectations, and ethical questions about how we view and treat other animals, both wild and domestic. Underneath it all is the fact of our runaway population growth and an insatiable appetite for cheap meat.

Since 1800, global population has grown seven-fold and is expected to continue increasing through the end of the century. With more than seven billion people on the planet today, there’s never been another large vertebrate animal whose population has grown as much or as quickly as humans. Meanwhile meat production has grown by a factor of 25 in that same time period, and is on the fast track to double again by mid-century.

A scientist who retired from the meat research center in 2013 told the New York Times in response to animal welfare concerns, “It’s not a perfect world. We are trying to feed a population that is expanding very rapidly, to nine billion by 2050, and if we are going to feed that population, there are some trade-offs.”

Government agencies acting with little oversight, in ways that would horrify most Americans, is a trade-off we didn’t sign up for.

Study after study has also shown that high meat consumption comes with an expensive climate price tag – a Chatham House study released in December cited livestock production as the largest global source of methane and nitrous oxide, two particularly potent greenhouse gases. With one-third of the planet’s arable land used for raising livestock, along with extensive air and water pollution and direct threats to wildlife and their habitat from grazing cattle, the same goes for the toll of meat production on endangered species and our remaining wild lands.

It all adds up to this: Now is the time to decide what trade-offs we’re willing to accept.

We don’t have to accept that ending hunger requires animal cruelty and the destruction of biodiversity when there are less resource-intensive and healthier ways to feed people. We don’t even have to accept that a population of nine billion is a foregone conclusion; instead we can fight for universal access to family planning and reproductive health care, human rights, education and equality. We can feed more people with fewer resources if we reduce our meat consumption and choose more plant-based foods. We can start to fight climate change on our plates.

There’s no question that the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center, like Wildlife Services, needs government oversight and accountability. But it’s also up to us, both individually and as a society, to reject the idea that cruelty, climate change and extinction are unavoidable costs of feeding the world.

How would you explain back in the Bible times during Abraham and Moses when they use to offer sacrifice and kill a lamb were they cruel and going against God. And those who couldn't afford animals like Lamb would use bird eggs. In the book of Exodus chp. 12: 11,21,27,43,48 and Lev. 23:5 and 12:3, Deut. 16:7and Exodus 34:25 when the death Angel was passing and God told them to kill a Lamb and put the blood on the door post and gave the command for them to roast it. How would you explain that because up until this day the Jews still eat Lamb. Even fish, it was fish that God used to feed the 5000 people. Are you saying I can't eat fish at all.     All meat consumption came AFTER the Fall of Man (Genesis Chapter 6). Man can eat meat while in a degenerate state but to return back to Eden he/she must go back to plant foods. Also, meat today is greatly TAINTED unlike meat 4,000 - 6,000 years ago! It's not the same. Jews are not the healthiest people, by the way! Health conscious people are!

    Q: Hey wassup Dherbs.com, I got a question about when people try to say they clean the meat with vinegar and citruses before they cook it. What does "cleaning" the meat have to do with the pesticides, worms, and other harmful things added to the meat? I read from your articles that the worms have a shell that forms in very high temperatures so it doesn't kill them.

    Q: What do you tell someone that believes that eating meat is better than eating products not made of meat such as wheat pasta, brown rice, etc. My wife eats way too much meat, and she always says that she needs it for the protein. She doesn't work out or exercise regularly so I see it as just an excuse to continue the same old behavior. She's 5'6" and 205lbs and I think she should weigh 140 - 145 max. She's 43 years old and suffers from high blood pressure and swelling in the legs.

    Q: I've made a lifestyle change about 8 months ago. I excluded all dairy, wheat, grains, gluten, legumes, sugar, oils (except olive oil). I still eat minimum amount of meat (chicken, fish) maybe 2 -3 times/wk. I'm slowly trying to eliminate meat totally as I only use to make my meals more filling.     Q: I have been diagnosed with neutropenia and been seeing a hematologist for the last 6 years. He wants to avoid doing a bone marrow biopsy on me if he can. I am also anemic and received a iron infusion about a year ago. I go weekly for a CBC count and Monday I was told that my iron count is low again. The lowest my white blood count has been is in the 700's. I am Afro-American and I know that it's common for our white blood count to run low. I rarely eat red meat.     Q: My cousin has been diagnosed with having leakage in the brain (cranial fluid depleting), which causes blindness in her left eye. Her neurologist told her to cut out the meat, but she can eat shrimp and salmon(although I'm not sure why he said salmon, and shrimp which is a meat).     Being raw or vegan does not have to be hard or expensive. The most inexpensive food are rice and beans. If you are budget consciense you should gravitate towards those foods. Stach based foods are super cheap. You should check out the book "eating vegan on 4 dollars a day" or any of Dr. Mcdougal's programs. 

    I run an online health/fitness/nutrition coaching program that can be found at www.theveganeffect.com. There you might find your answers. 

    Exercise programs do not have to be expensive either. I am a master at building fitness plans with the minimal of equipment. If all you have is your body weight than I can build you a 90 day plan. The same goes if all you have is a resistance band, exercise ball, dumbells, kettlebell, etc.

    Q: Last week was my first week on the detox program. I have a question about the charcoal - what is it used for? I know that it is part of the detox program, but what organ does it help to cleanse? I have stopped all meat and dairy products with no problem- but I am still having a difficult time with the sweet cravings. Any suggestions?
