Cultivating Humility – Beyond Lack of Pridefulness

Before Charlotte the spider spelled the word “humble” in her web to describe Wilbur the pig, she told Templeton the rat that the word meant “not proud.”

That’s probably what most people say if you put them on the spot. But, according to a new study, with seasonal overtones,  if you give them time to think about it deeply, other themes emerge that have a lot to do with learning.

And these intellectual dimensions of humility describe the spider as well or better than the pig.

“Wilbur has many of the dimensions of humility in general: regard for others, not thinking too highly of himself — but highly enough,” said Peter Samuelson, the lead study author. “Charlotte shows some of the unique aspects of intellectual humility: curiosity, love of learning, willingness to learn from others.”

Samuelson is a psychologist at Fuller Theological Seminary who embarked on a new voyage for academia: a bottom-up exploration of what it really means to be humble. Samuelson teamed up with Brigham Young University psychologist Sam Hardy.

For his part, Hardy utilized a statistical technique called multi-dimensional scaling that made sense of open-ended responses from the 350 study participants recruited from Amazon’s “Mechanical Turk.”

“This is more of a bottom-up approach, what do real people think about humility, what are the lay conceptions out there in the real world and not just what comes from the ivory tower,” Hardy said. “We’re just using statistics to present it and give people a picture of that.”

Hardy’s analysis found two clusters of traits that people use to explain humility. Traits in the first cluster come from the social realm: Sincere, honest, unselfish, thoughtful, mature, etc. The second and more unique cluster surrounds the concept of learning: curious, bright, logical and aware.

Samuelson says the two clusters of humble traits — the social and intellectual — often come as a package deal for people who are “intellectually humble.” Because they love learning, they spend time learning from other people.

“In many ways, this is the defining feature of intellectual humility and what makes it distinct from general humility,” said Samuelson.

Q: I'm 17 years of age and go to a boarding high school in Florida. I just moved here from L.A. Over the summer. I've always been passionate about picking up valuable information that is not taught in schools. Even though I've always gotten good grades in all classes, I have always had a dislike for school. I feel like it is trapping me, because I have very little time to study topics that are truly beneficial such as law, herbs, history and many other topics. I just wanted to give you a brief background image of me; bottom line is this... I want to be part of what you are doing. I know you probably have so many positions filled. And I've never been materialistic and never liked school, but I also understand that if I want to get out in the world on my own right now I need to have a situation where I can make a sufficient amount of money to support myself. So I'm just letting you know I'm very passionate about helping people heal themselves and I would be very committed to what you are trying to accomplish in terms of healing people mentally and physically. I feel so thankful because most people don't get the opportunity to come across TRUE herbalism, TRU history, TRUE law, etc, until they are deep into adulthood, if ever. And I feel like I must fulfill my opportunity starting NOW. Because if I don't, I would be failing the mission I was incarnated here to do. Peace

    A:

Greetings, Beloved! You have recognized at a very young age that school is a waste of time as measured against the subjects of your heart. Make the time to study the topics of your interest. It's well worth it, Beloved! I did it for many years of my life and when I was out of school and got into knowledge, I spent almost whole days studying the interests of my desires which has led me to the life I am now living. I'm glad I followed my heart. In regards to Dherbs, unfortunately Beloved, I am an Inter-net company only and thus have no positions available. What is your zodiac sign? Maybe we can help you to find work that is suitable to your interests. Your 10th House explains the area's best for you work-wise. Hey, thanks for reaching out, Beloved! One day I would like to employ thousands of people. If you ever want to talk or need advice, give me a call!

Q: The comment I have is about your topic on Islam and where it comes from. I would to like to know how did you come up with the information regarding Prophet Muhammad? I have been Muslim for a year and some change and Islam teaches us to study astrology and the zodiac signs Allah says in surah 85 in the English translation. I was shocked to read how the article dogs the prophet. I was shocked to read the statement about how the Catholics brought about Islam. I really like your concept about food and health I have brought some products from your company but the article really shook me up so if you could email back I would like to hear your humble opinion about this topic.

    A:

To know what I know about Islam and Western religions one has to study all material and not be biased in reading and studying. Study Arab paganism, mythology, female studies, etc. and you'll discover that Islam, like Christianity, had pagan origins and it is not an accident that pre-Islamic history was covered up by the Muslims. before you had Koran you had Book of Kore. Her sacred day was Friday, the same day Jumah is on. her scared color was green, same color as the Qur'an. My article doesn't dog the prophet. You only feel this way because you are a follower of the prophet and your feelings and thoughts are biased as a Muslim. Do your homework, Good Brother! Ain't nothing sacred about Muhammad, Islam, etc. YOU are sacred! The human body is sacred! The Kabah represents you YOU! God did not speak to another man in order to convey a message to you. If God spoke to Muhammad God can speak to and through you. Religion is not from God but from man! This is a fact! Thanks for patronizing me! I am not a hater of Islam. I just speak facts and objective truth. I too was once a Muslim until I discovered the secrets about Islam and what the Arabs did to Africans long before Europeans did.

Q: I've enjoyed learning from your website. I heard you on fm 102.5 in ATL. my question is regarding buying juices until I get a juicer. Can you recommend any particular one or what to look for when buying a juicer.

    A:

Good fruit juice brands include Lakewood and Knudsen. In re juicer, for the most part any juicer will do if it JUICES! Stainless steel is BEST! Look for a juicer made of stainless steel.

Q: Happy New Year to You and yours!!! My son is three years old; he was born December 12, 2004, this was a Sunday. Ever since he started talking he's had a fascination with the light and light bulbs. He looks up and says "mom look, the light is beautiful" or "mom see the beautiful light bulb". I look at it and I usually say yes it is beautiful Jordan. However, I do not see what he sees nor do I understand the attraction. When he was two weeks old I took him with me to Olive May and the old wise woman there saw him and asked me to bring him to her. When she looked at him she said "he is indigo--he is like sunshine when he enters a room and people will be drawn to him." So far the part about people being drawn to him has manifest true. What do you think of the attraction/fascination to the lights? Also, I read that awesome article on birthmarks!! I don't have one, however, my son has one on his buttock; I don't remember which one at the moment. His primary pediatrician called it a mongolian spot..what do you say?? Does it mean he will fall and hurt himself or has fallen?? Looking forward to seeing you in March. Love, Peace and Blessings.

    A:

You son is most definitely an INDIGO CHILD (specifically a CRYSTAL or RAINBOW CHILD manifesting all 7 spectrums of color of the Rainbow). His preoccupation with lights could denote many things. For one, he is Light himself (light-worker). It could be that he still remembers the Light before re-incarnating this time around. We all eventually move into the Light in order to move on. Mongolian spot? A very negative term! Buttocks denote an injury that occured on that area in a past life. Birthmarks don't mean something adverse will happen to you in this lifetime where your birthmark is. It doesn't mean this at all. Just be open to experience and learn from and with your child. Live in the moment and just be open!

Q: Where Do I Begin As Far As Learning Law?

    A:

Simply begin by reading and learning the United States Constitution and its Bill of Rights followed by your State's constitution. I also recommend reading and studying your State's Vehicle Code, Penal or Criminal Code, Civil Code, Code/rule of Civil Procedure; the federal Internal Revenue Code or Title 26 of the United States Code, and the Federal Code of Regulation. Good law books to have, read, and study include Black's Law Dictionary (you can find on Amazon.com, e-bay, or at used bookstore), Bouvier Law Dictionary, and Barron's Law Dictionary. I also recommend going to your County Public Law Library and researching the legal precedents or case-decisional law for your particular state. I also recommend studying federal case law as well, i.e. Supreme Court Reporter, United States Reporter, and/or Lawyer's edition.

Q: Why do people enjoy drinking beer, wine, and hard liquor? If it's because of the feeling they derive from it, is there a natural alternative for internal (extract, etc.) or external(lighting, scent, etc.) use that can give people the same feeling?

    A:

People enjoy spirits (alcohol) for many reasons. Most people are just simply brainwashed; that's all!

Q: Hello, I've always heard that people can't "Spot loose" when it comes to weight, however, I've done it but don't really know what it was that cause the "spot weight" lose. My question and dilemma is: I tend to gain weight in my breast area and mid section but no where else. I am apple shaped. I know it isn't good for the heart and I want to loose mostly my breast. What would you recommend eating or not and what type of exercise would you recommend. Thank you!

    A:

Spot losing is a myth or sorts. I'm not saying it can't happen but it's highly unlikely and completely uncontrollable. Your body picks and chooses where it gains/loses weight and they are not always in the same spots. Some people gain weight proportionately and some gain it in certain spots (hips, thighs, breasts, belly). I do get asked this question a lot from women "How do I lose weight in my gut or hip area but not in my breast?". The truth is that there is no real answer for that.  Your own spot loss was probably just luckiness and apararently exactly where you needed it to.

As far as eating is concerned nothing causes the body to fat more than these two things. One is a high nutrient density, high alkaline, high raw, low fat, vegan diet. The other is juice fasting. Both are extremely helpful.

Foods know and studied to cause weight loss are beans, greens, cinnamon, cayenne pepper, raw apple cider vinegar, oatmeal, and fruits and veggies. Noe of which have been conclusive in causing the body to lose fat in certain spots of the body.

I run a highly successful health, nutrition, and fitness coaching company. I have coached many people to a vast number of health goals. Weight loss is one of my specialties. My 6 month program is designed to give people all the tools they need to reach their goals. My six month program includes lessons on weight loss, juice fasting, alkalinity, meal planning and meal timing, and also comes with a 90 day fitness plan. To see if my program is right for you fill out this health form found here (http://the-vegan-effect.healthcoach.integrativenutrition.com/forms) and claim your free first consultation.

The best and most efficient exercises for weight loss are cardio exercises. That is however only part of the equation. Learning how to interval train is your most efficient way to burn fat. You may burn more fat at 60 percent of your maximum heart rate but if you interval train where you change your intensity and heart rate you burn more calories in less time and more fat. Also with low intensity cardio the burn effect ends when you end your training as where interval training keeps your metabolism stoked for hours after training maximizing your burn.

Here is an example of interval training

4:30 seconds warm up (moderate speed)

    30 seconds sprint

    4:30 seconds recovery (moderate speed)

    30 seconds sprint

    4:30 seconds recovery (moderate speed)

Continue intervals for anywhere from 20-30 minutes

The second best way is to do high rep, low - moderate weight exercises. Circuit training where you go from one exercise to another with as little as 30 seconds rest in between sets.

    Here is an example:

    Jumping jacks 1 minute

    Crunches 1 minute

    Pushups 1 minute

    Squats 1 minute

3 sets of 12 alternating lunge to shoulder press

    3 sets chest press x 12

3 sets of bent over rows x 12

    3 sets of bicep curls

    3 sets of triceps extensions

    1 minute of jump squats

1 minute of Lunge and press

You want to focus more on exercises that move more than one muscle. Focus on compound exercises (squats, pushups/chest press, pull-up/lat pull downs). Also focus on exercises that make you move like jumping jacks, mountain climbers, and burpees.

    Hope this helps,

    Gary Gibson HHC CPT

Q: Thank you once again for your advice and your article on love. I was in so much pain when I emailed you all I could think of was that maybe death would give me peace. As your articles say, heartache, the broken light cord, hurts something terrible in the most literal sense. Your articles give me so much comfort and peace, you are truly blessed. I read everything is Okay as often as I can to remind me to go with the flow of life. Since your first email I have started working with Rose quartz, Rhodocrosite, and Adventurine. I've started practicing Qi Gong and this is helping to put me in tune with who I really am, divine. I cannot say it has been all peaches and cream, the journey up has been bumpy- I have to read and re-read, make the conscious decisions to let go of old patterns. Thank you for your love. Thank you for taking the time to reach back out to a stranger when you did not have to. I am on your site now ready to make my second purchase. There are two 4th Charka elixirs for sale, which one should I purchase? The abundance elixir- is this meant to bring abundance or change my thinking on abundance? I apologize if this question sounds ignorant but I'm slightly confused. One last thing Dherbs.com, you speak of a Three in One modality and advise your reader to get one. What is this and how can I get one? Also, how can I schedule a Charka Consult with you? I know this is a great deal of questions and comments, thank you so much, so very much, for your time.

    A:

Thank you so much for your e-mail, beloved! Much obliged! Glad to hear Dherbs is helping you on your wonderful journey. Death is never the answer, Beloved. Please read my new article on â€SUICIDEâ€, which explains why (if you haven't already). In re: Charka elixirs I would suggest the FOURTH CHAKRA #2 the one for the Heart as compared to "healing." My friend Julie no longer offers the 3-in-1 sessions, which were so beneficial. However, we still offer charka balancing and can do a reading by phone ($55) if you're interested.

Q: Unfortunately my child did get vaccinated due mostly in part to my ignorance to the law. I must admit the administration wore me down with the threats and medical exam fee that kept stating that their immunization was low. I don't believe the hype!!! I did give them charcoal and Bentonite clay right after the shots. I also took them both off of the meats and dairy completely (as we were transitioning into a raw food diet). They are looking at me long faced now but I believe that they will appreciate it later. :-) What I can take from this experience as a learning lesson and help others that maybe in a similar situation and simply do not know what to do. All the information that you have on your website is amazing (I am a Dherbs junkie). You said it best that knowledge is power and I truly understand that statement now. Thank you for all that you do and just know that your works are appreciated.

    A:

Did you read our article on â€THE DANGERS OF VACCINATIONS†I have created a NEW vaccine waiver kit that folks will be able to order from Dherbs and give to all administrations. It includes an affidavit of objection, an affidavit to the nurse assuming 100% full responsibility for the inoculation, and a request for chemical ingredient of the vaccine. Have the child perform CHILDREN DETOX (liquid extracts) too (within the next 30 days). Stay strong and move forward more knowledgeable than you were.

Q: In one of your articles I read on re-building the male reproductive system, you mentioned that a combination of monoatomic gold, MSM sulfur, Zinc, Jackrabbit herbs and others can be used in concert (along with balanced intentions) to do so. I just noticed you have Khemetian Gold. Can this be used in substitute of Monoatomic? Thanks. I love the information; I am learning a great deal and will soon order some things.

    A:

KHEMETIAN GOLD is NOT mono-atomic gold (MAG). Read the ingredients of the product and you will see it does not contain mono-atomic gold but humic and fulvic acid, different substances altogether from MAG. Therefore, Beloved, I wouldn't suggest a substitution. Glad you enjoy all the information! Thank you for your interest in Dherbs.com!

Q: I'm putting people on to your site & herbs. I got 3 guys last week that went to your site and purchased the TOTAL MALE CLEANSE! I'm thinking I could have gingivitis. What can be taken or done about bleeding of the gums? Could it also be a lack of a vitamin or protein maybe? Is there a way for it to be reversed?

    A:

Mineral deficiency can be a cause, gum disease as well. Take VITAMIN C FORMULA (6 caps daily) and CIRCUL-AID FORMULA. Thanks you for the referrals!

Q: I have been reading a lot lately on HCG levels and people who have acquired HCG injections to lose weight at a fast rate of speed. Ultimately, if I understand correctly, HCG is a fertility booster. Would the fertility kit your company produces have the same effect, and actually raise the HCG levels of a person's chemistry? I would much prefer to treat my body 100% organically/herbally. I have highly mixed emotions about allowing "doctors" to inject something into my body, if there is an alternative.

    A:

Our Fertility Kit is 100% organic (natural) and does not only work on one level (i.e. HCG), but all hormonal levels in addition to balancing, strengthening, and toning the hormonal system. All hormones are raised to their necessary level with our fertility kit and regimen.

It is unnatural to inject anything into the human body. It's a disrespect to the body which is perfectly qualified to do what it was designed to do if you just give the body what it needs.

Follow your emotions (or gut instinct) about doctors and injection. Dherbs offers a safe and sane alternative. Give it a try! GO NATURAL!

Take the Female Health tea along with the kit to enhance its effect and the chances of conception.

Q: I have other food combinations that I’m kind of confused about on the e book, this is my first time learning to combine food 1. can I add this to my salad a. Tomato (I think the answer is no) b. cucumber (the 3 below are under proteins, @ the bottom is says that you can mix them with vegetables but in the same sentence it’s also says you cant mix them with proteins...it’s a bit confusing to me) c. cashews or walnuts d. avocado

    A:

You can add these to your salad! They are exceptions because you are eating them in a salad and tomatoes and cucumbers are veggie-fruits, so they are okay! Avocadoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, etc are okay in your salad!

Q: Why do people that have herpes, have less outbreaks as time goes on? I have read your articles on this disease, and I also have listened to your audio articles.

    A:

Simply because slowly but surely as people accept the fact that they have been diagnosed with the insidious disease, they accept it and it quells anxiety. It is initial anxiety that causes outbreaks in the first place.

Q: I understand by reading your articles, and other related areas of study that the organs in the body are intelligent and have memory. The topic of organ donors comes up from time to time, and most recently in regard to recently deceased NFL player Chris Henry, whose family gave his eyes and other organs up. What is your perspective on this issue?

    A:

I respect free will, but our organs should never be donated. Never! The only exception is if the organs are coming from a very highly and spiritually evolved person (which is rare in our society). Organs carry memory. If you're born with organs you should die with them.

Q: I was told that this herb (St. John's Wort) isn't good to take for people with HIV. Please clarify this. Also I know someone who has HIV, polymyostist, Hepatitis C and Sarcoidosis. What do you suggest for them to take as a herbal and nutritional regimen?

    A:

St. John's Wort is a highly beneficial herb to help eradicate disease. It has anti-viral properties that help ward off infections, and viruses.

We recommend performing the Full Body Cleanse, followed by the Anti-Viral Cleanse. These cleanses will help optimize all the essential organs and systems of your body, and then help. to fight viral infections and build the immune system.
