Delicious, Healthy Coffee Alternatives

Caffeine addiction isn’t pretty. If you normally down at least three cups of coffee to get through the day and find yourself stranded without your usual fix, you know this to be true.

Coffee, of course, is actually a superfood — filled with disease-fighting antioxidants. But while a reasonable amount can provide some health benefits and boost focus and productivity, in excess, caffeine consumption could hurt your health and keep you from being your most effective.

“In the right amount, coffee is actually a health food,” Dawn Jackson Blatner R.D., author of “The Flexitarian Diet,” tells The Huffington Post. “Sixteen ounces of coffee before noon not only can keep you alert, but also can prevent diseases like diabetes and Alzheimer’s.”

But over-consumption of caffeine can actually break your focus by causing jitters and anxiety, and lead to poor sleep quality, according to Blatner. High caffeine consumption has also been linked with heightening the body’s stress response and with messing with your perception of your own stress levels.

Even if you’re happy with your coffee habit, drinking it late in the afternoon or evening could affect your shuteye, so you might want to switch over to a low or no-caffeine alternative.

“Caffeine is a drug,” says Blatner. “For most people, the withdrawal symptoms include throbbing headaches, and feeling tired and foggy. The best way to [quit] is not to go cold turkey but to taper, like you would with any drug. Start removing the latest cup you’re drinking, and then your afternoon cups … And in every situation, you’re going to need a substitute.”

Quitting caffeine isn’t easy, but if you feel your consumption has become a bad habit, the best way to break it is to create a new one to put in its place. Enter, our list of the best coffee alternatives to help you kick your caffeine dependency — for good.

Roasted dandelion root coffee.

“You don’t eliminate a bad habit, you replace it,” James Clear, founder of The Art Of Becoming Better, wrote in a recent Huffington Post blog. When it comes to coffee, swapping out your high-octane dark roast with a nutritious herbal coffee can help ease the transition.

Dandelion root is an herb that’s been used to treat upset stomachs and digestive troubles — and it can be made into a surprisingly tasty coffee-style drink. Brew your own using roasted dandelion root (which can be purchased in bulk from a health food store) or try Dandy Blend, an instant coffee made from dandelion root. Research has suggested compounds in dandelion root could have anti-cancer properties, and it’s also high in vitamin C, vitamin D and beta carotene.

“Herbal coffees are awesome,” Blatner says. “I’m a real coffee lover, so when I’m trying to do ‘responsible caffeination,’ I have a grande coffee in the morning and then switch to herbal coffee with no caffeine in the afternoon.”

Chicory root coffee.

The root of the chicory plant (which blooms into a beautiful purple flower) can be ground into a healthy, caffeine-free, coffee-like warm beverage — it’s also rich in beta-carotene, acts as a mild natural laxative, and has a protective effect on the liver, according to WebMD. If you’re looking for an alternative, try chicory coffee, which you can brew in your own coffee pot — and it smells similar to the real thing (we loveAyurveda Roast’s organic, GMO-free french vanilla blend).

“It’s the idea of finding legitimate substitutions that get you in that same motion — whether you’re in a coffee shop or at your house, you need something in every situation to break the habit,” Blatner says.

Wheatgrass.

Replace your daily shot of espresso with a shot of wheatgrass, which packs a powerful punch of nutrients, including vitamins A, C and E, iron, magnesium, and chlorophyll (yes, the stuff that makes plants green — which some holistic practitioners believe is a detoxifier, although there’s scant evidence).

Yerba mate.

Low in caffeine and loaded with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, yerba mate tea has become a popular coffee alternative. “Four Hour Work-Week” author Tim Ferris says he drinks it to help boost creativity and efficiency, though so far the evidence for yerba mate’s energizing power is largely anecdotal.

“I use tea in place of coffee when possible because caffeine has a sharp crash for me,”Ferriss wrote on his blog, “whereas yerba mate (which includes caffeine, theobromine, and theophylline) does not.”

The Mayo Clinic, however, points out there is little research to support such claims and encourages moderation to avoid possible health problems.

Q: Hey herbalist, so I have been doing a lot of research on caffeine, and the benefits and harms of it. I am looking for some added information about the differences between the caffeine found naturally in coffee or tea, and the kind found in pure caffeine pills. I have heard that the pills are much more harmful, but have not been able to find proof of why. With the exception of "its made in a lab, therefore it must be worse". If you could shed some light on the matter, I would greatly appreciate it! Just one more question. I have read that caffeine blocks the re-uptake of glutamate. This can cause glutamate toxicity (resulting in dead brain cells), but I am skeptical as to how often this occurs. Will that happen if one takes just 200-mg of caffeine? Is it for the chronic caffeine users who drink 6 cups of coffee a day for 10 years? Thanks so much for your time and effort! looking forward to some knowledge!

    A:

Nature does not make caffeine or any substance in mono-structured form, including caffeine. Caffeine consumed by itself is harmful (a la caffeine pills -- nature does not produce caffeine pills). Caffeine pills are INORGANIC and thus not absorbed by the body (the cells). Bio-caffeiene from plant sources is ORGANIC and thus absorbable. Organic substances can be absorbed through the cells. Inorganic substances cannot. Inorganic caffeine blocks reuptake of glutamate, and that's another reason why synthetic caffeine is harmful. Organic caffeine does not block reuptake of glutamate.

Q: Can I drink coffee with caffeine while on 21day cleans?

A: No, you cannot consume any kind of coffee or caffeine while cleansing. One of the main purposes of the cleanse, is to give your body a break from the things it's accustom to receiving; letting your body function on it's own. It's common for people to get proper sleep at night, have energy, but still have a need to consume coffee or some type of caffeine. It's important for your body to produce natural energy. You can consume herbal tea's while cleansing, Green Tea provides the most energy. The Dangers of Drinking Coffee - https://dherbs.com/news/4844/4669/The-Dangers-of-Drinking-Coffee/d,ai.html

Q: Hello My name is Mark from Montreal. I have hepatitis C & cirrhosis that I got thru blood transfusions years ago. I take very good care of myself but I?m confused about coffee enemas. I?m seeing a biochemist and he tells me to stay away from coffee enemas. Can you please explain to me the benefits for me in taking coffee enemas? Could they be too strong for me and if not how many times a month should I do it?

    A:

Coffee enemas are one of the best remedies for any liver disease. You may perform coffee enemies weekly (twice a week) to help your condition. Also, take 3 capsules of our Liver Formula 4 times a day and drink lemon water (water with lemon juice squeezed in it).

If you really want to accelerate healing, perform our Full Body Cleanse and perform those enemas while doing the cleanse.

Q: I am taking the FULL BODY DETOX. I am working 3rd shift tonight. I am trying to avoid coffee. Please give me a healthy alternative to stay awake. Also is there something herbal I can take to help me calm down to sleep during the day?

    A:

The best way to provide your body with more energy would be to consume foods that have a rich source of energy.  Foods that naturally provide the body with energy include banana, spinach, citrus fruits like grapefruits and oranges, apples, almonds and lemons.  Green Tea and Yerba Mate tea is also a good source of energy.  Camomille or Kava Kava tea can help calm you when you're ready for bed.  If your schedule constantly flucuates, you might be interested in the Energy Formula.

Q: First of all hello and thank you for the FULL BODY DETOX. I completed the full detox August 5, 08 and found it extremely beneficial, again, thank you. Please let me know your opinion regarding the "Abgone" Extra Strength pill that reportedly promotes pot belly loss (the one issue I continue to confront). I exercise, I do yoga and I jog four times weekly 3 miles. Never the less I still have a "pot belly". I contacted "Biotech Research" and was advised that this is an all natural product. The ingredients are said to be Vitamin C, Zinc, Chromium Polynitic, Phofphatidylserine, Clabcaa, Dandelion Powder, 99% Caffeine, Green Tea Extract, The capsule is made of soybean, beeswax, gelatin, glycerin and red dye #40. Please respond at your earliest convenience.

    A:

That product ABGONE is crap due to the ingredients. No product is your solution, but the mind (thoughts, attitude), diet, lifestyle, etc. Stop worrying about the pot belly and focus on your desired state. Only see your results in your mind and you will attract the results on the material plane. Please read through some of our articles, beloved!

Q: I am interested in starting the Full Body Detox program. At this time, I would like to know which program is best for me. At current, I have started removing things from my diet as of 2 weeks ago (pork, chicken, red meat, I'm trying with the fish but it's hard!) I am not eating cheese but I still eat yogurt and every now and then I will eat a boiled egg (egg whites). I have removed soda from my diet, no coffee, I drink herbal or green tea, pomegranate juice or orange juice and I drink filtered water (I have a countertop filter that I change every 6 months and the Brita pitcher that I change every 2 months). Along with the supplement, is there an eating plan that you can suggest for me? I am eating more fruits and vegetables, but I would welcome suggestions on certain foods that I can eat while I begin my cleansing.

    A:

The Full Body Detox kit comes with a prescribed dietary plan and notifies a person what they can and cannot eat during the detox.

Q: Sorry to bother you again but you are a wealth of knowledge and I appreciate all your information you give us. I am 44yrs old and have 20 pounds to lose. After I quit taking EHEDRINE I started gaining my weight back. I use to take EPHEDRINE to keep the weight off and no longer am able to order it in my state of Minnesota because it is banned. So I ordered some EPHDRA POWDER in hopes it would do the same for me as the ephedrine did but the ephdra powder doesn't SUPPRESS MY APPETITE like the ephedrine tablets did. I was wondering what I could add to the powder to bring out the appetite suppressant qualities in the ephdra powder. I have tried to brew it with my coffee and that hasn't helped either. I really would like to take this weight off and ephedrine was the only thing that helped me and I pray that your knowledge would help me to lose this excess weight. I bought your thyroid capsules and wondering how long before I will notice any energy difference. (I have a hypothyroid which is probably the cause of the gaining weight but the ephedrine helped me with that also). I pray you can

    A:

You're giving external factors too much power over you. Things never heal us, only placate us. Truly answers lie within. What did Ephedrine have that God did not put in you? Forget about keeping weight off, instead focus on maintaining your desired weight. Why do you need to suppress your appetite? What you suppress in one area will manifest in another area. Suppression does not heal, only hides things and allows things to grow. Your challenge is to cultivate self discipline and maintain your desired weight. Read my article â€EPHEDRA†under articles. Ephedrine is a damn drug! Drugs don't heal, they only suppress! Nature (Ephedra) takes time! My knowledge cannot help you to lose weight, but only stimulate you into taking control of your own life and health, especially pertaining to weight. Your power lies within! It dos not come from outside of self! The Kingdom of God is WITHIN!

Q: I want to know what is the difference in using the Wild Alum Root Powder for douching in reference to my prolapsed uterus problem vs. using the FEMALE HEALTH TEA Product that you sell. I would like to know so that I am able to know why and when to use a particular herbal product that will be better for my situation. Your clarity on this for my education will greatly appreciate. Thanks for your time and do have a wonderful day/evening upon receipt of this email. Thanks again for any clarity you can provide so I will better understand why you suggested and advised me to use the Female Health Tea.

    A:

There's really no difference: it's just that wild alum is one herb (and a very good) and the tea I recommended has more herbs which have an affinity for female organs. Both can be used or one over the other.

Q: I'm a 38-year-old male who has been suffering with Atrial Fibrillation for 3 years. Up until the age of 35 I never had any real illness that had any caused for concern, and then out of the blue I have a heart related issue. My Doctor has never given me a cause of where this came from and all the research I've done on my own turns up the same. The answers the doctor gave (caffeine, alcohol, and so on) I've never really used any of those things excessively. My eating habits up until that time where not that great and I was about 100lbs over weight. I've lost 85lbs since, and also have giving up all meats. Also I had Cath. Ablation surgery for the A-Fib. It's been 3 months since surgery and I'm now off of the Coumadin they had me taking. I'm not sure if the surgery was a total success, I've not had an attack since New Year’s Day 2008. But I'm still not feeling back to my old self. I've been having some very weird feelings of nausea, tension, constipation, and tiredness, headaches, etc. When I do go to the doctor they tell me that everything looks fine and that I may be a bit stressed and suffering from anxiety. I'm writing to you in hopes that you may be able to guide me to the right path to healing and returning to living somewhat normal life again.

    A:

WITHOUT A QUESTION THE BEST PLACE FOR YOU TO BEGIN YOUR NATURAL HEALING JOURNEY IS WITH THE Full Body Detox. AND BECAUSE YOU TOOK THE DANGEROUS “COUMADINâ€, YOU REALLY NEED TO CLEANSE YOUR BODY OUT. THIS CLEANSE WILL HELP YOUR HEART TO RECOVER AS WELL.

Q: I was most impressed by your website. The information to support your products and your obvious interest in informing the public caught and kept my attention. As I searched further into Black Seed Tea, the reason for my visit, I noticed your product ALCOHOL BUSTER. The comment of "on the metaphysical level, alcohol consumption also impairs the human aura" although very non clinical, is very much my way of thinking, it got my attention. I read as far as the disclaimer, "the formula does not have the power to prevent consumption of alcohol as only will power and a made up mind can do this." Here's where I step out of character and find myself writing this e-mail. It has been my experience while working with people from all walks of life, who are members of any 12 step program, that a reference to will power as a prevention of anything is a two edged sword. While I agree will power is important in abstention, I believe the person is benefited by using their personal will power to seek help, to commit to recovery, to take care of the physical, mental and emotional bodies. I don't believe "human" will power is the power that prevents consumption. The suggestion that "will power and a made up mind can prevent consumption of alcohol" to a person with an addiction could become a deadly idea. This of course is my opinion, do with it what you feel is appropriate.

    A:

I feel you in where you're coming from, but I truly believe and know human willpower plays a role in prevention and healing of all disease. The strongest thing humans have is a will. Will meshes with desire in many cases. Both are strong in humans. Now, you're dealing with a person with addiction in regards to your last statement and I can totally understand where you are coming from but the sick person is not exempt from any laws of healing. There is no real or true healing absent willpower to do a thing, a beneficial thing. The addicted person must be first dealt with on the physical and psychological levels and then the spiritual and energetic (getting to the root of the addiction: perhaps a 2nd chakra problem or something hanging over from a past life). All addiction points to spiritual void and therefore the only ultimate healing here is mental or spiritual via mental. As you know, it's mind-body-spirit and all must be dealt with for healing. Will is important in abstention but we don't won't people to focus on abstaining which is usually converted into "can't have" by the addicted person. We want people to only focus on the good, the healthy, what they need and require, not what they don't want or can't have because their subconscious mind will create the situations and circumstances by which these people end up consuming the thing that is insalubrious for them. It never fails. I grew up with an alcoholic mother and plenty of other alcoholics. We want people to have and use willpower to GO FOR the best things for them, will in DOING the right and healthy things for themselves. All healing is ultimately within self. As a man thicket so is he! Peace be unto you fellow metaphysician!

Q: I am an African American, 70 years old, and in good health and physical condition. I jog/walk 1 1/2 miles 5 days a week, do pushups and sit ups daily. But, I have low bone density, on the following medication: once a month Itake 1 capsule of Ergocalciferl 50,000 mg; once a week I take 1 tablet of Alendronate 70mg (Fosamax) a week (same day), and daily one tablet of calcium 500 with Vitamin D, and a multi-vitamin tablet. My questions are: 1) is there a herbal product to replace each, Ergocalciferl, Alendronate, Vitamin D, and what do you recommend for a multi-vitamin purpose and something to boost my energy level? Thanks, I will wait to receive your response.

    A:

I would recommend you take KHEMETIAN GOLD, ELECTRIC GREENS CELL FOOD, IRON PHOSPHATE FORMULA, and CALCIUM FORMULA to replace these products you listed that are harmful to you. All of the above will nourish you with the necessary nutrients your body requires.

Q: I have a good dentist, that cares much about the health and service of her patients. The only thing is that, it's their practice that before they can do anything on you (ex. fill cavities, root canal or anything) you have to take antibiotics an hour before the appointment. This is for prevention of any infections during, or after the procedure. I read the article about antibiotics, and know how harmful it is for your body. I am soon going need to have an implant procedure done. I want to know if there is an alternative to antibiotics or something I can take to be ready for the surgery in oppose to taking the antibiotics for prevention of infections?

    A:

Most people opt for the antibiotics, and then after the dental work just consume carbon (activated charcoal). Antibiotics options would include Echinacea-Goldenseal extract, and Candida Buster formula which is 100% anti-biotical in nature. These products are all available in our store. Peace and Love!

Q: I started my FULL BODY DETOX yesterday and so far so good. I have been reading books off of the book list you provided in the ALTERNATIVE DIET AND LIFESTYLES MANUAL. I really have great expectations for this detox. Anyway to my question since I have started the detox I can actually feel my organ (I am assuming) moving around. It almost feel like the motion of a child but I know I am not pregnant (hubby had a vasectomy) and plus the sensation is up too high. Have you experienced this yourself or know some else that has experienced this. I have to admit that I have not drank the daily recommended amount of water I am suppose to but I have been eating raw foods and drinking herbal teas.

    A:

People experience all kinds of things but most report their overall experience, not beginning ones. At this point I don't know what the case could be. Just trust in the healing process and take notes of your daily experiences. This is how you learn about your body. Good luck on your cleanse!
