Do You Know How Many Calories Are In A 24-Ounce Soda?

0-382729184-coca-cola-soda-bottles-at-supermarket

Even though it’s widely known that soda can contribute to weight gain, the majority of adults don’t actually know how many calories are in a bottle of soda, a new study reveals.

The research, published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and based on data from 3,926 adults, shows that eight in 10 adults — 84.4 percent — know that sugar-sweetened beverages can promote weight gain. However, nearly the same percentage of adults — 81 percent — did not know (or inaccurately stated) the number of calories in 24 ounces of soda. (There are 251 to 350 calories in a 24-ounce soda).

In addition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention researchers found that knowledge about sugar-sweetened beverages and weight gain, as well as the calorie information of sugar-sweetened beverages, differed by sex, household income, education level and race.

Specifically, women, non-Hispanic white people, those with higher household incomes ($75,000 to $99,999 each year) and college graduates were the most likely to know that sugar-sweetened beverages can contribute to weight gain. And people ages 25 to 44, college graduates, married or domestically partnered people, those with higher household incomes and non-Hispanic whites were the most likely to know the calorie information for a 24-ounce soda.

The study also revealed differences in sugar-sweetened beverage intake among different groups. Nearly one-third of people in the study said they drank a sugar-sweetened beverage one or more times a day in the last seven days. Men, young adults (ages 18 to 24), people with lower incomes ($34,999 per year or less) and people who did not complete high school were the most likely to consume the drinks two or more times a day.

Researchers noted that more research is needed to determine if knowledge about sugar-sweetened beverages actually affects intake of the drinks.

However, they did say that the “findings suggest that knowledge that drinking SSBs [sugar-sweetened beverages] can contribute to weight gain is significantly associated with consumption of SSBs among adults and can be used to identify individuals who may need additional nutrition education regarding the potential contribution of excess energy intake from SSBs to weight gain,” they wrote in the study. “In addition, adults with less education, lower-income individuals, men, and minorities should be targets of nutrition education because their knowledge level is lower but SSB intake is higher in these groups.”

Q: My wife quit using HRT "premarin" several years ago because of the bad publicity about it. She has not taken anything since. What should she take if anything? She has experienced a weight gain that is hard to get rid of and a craving for sweets. We ordered the sugar control last week.

    A:

Please read our article "Female Hormonal Replacement Therapy" on our site for natural HRT alternatives.

Sugar Control is a good start. Your wife may wish to perform the Full Body Cleanse and/or the Female Cleanse in order to help eradicate sugar and junk food cravings, while working to naturally cleanse and detoxify the body to aid in necessary weight release, enhancing the immune system and increasing energy levels.

Q: Thank you for your responds to my letter. The reason why I want to gain weight is for a health reason not for looks. Society has nothing to do with me gaining weight. I'm 5'11 1/2" almost 6' and my weight is 137 lbs. Now to me I'm underweight for what I used to weight in my 20s. I was 150-160 lbs then but as I'd reached my 30s and having a lot of stress weigh down on me my eating habit as well my weight decrease to 120 - 130 lbs. So as you can see I had lost about 30-40 lbs. So yes I want to gain my weight so I can be happy and healthy. I understand that "gaining weight is gaining waste" if you are doing for the society or physical appearance. But that's not what I'm looking for, I'm doing it for my health. So if there a way for me to put the weight on; do you have a suggestion. I will appreciate it if not then thank you for taking the time to read my letters.

Q: I recently completed the Full Body Detox, which I loved. Now, 2 months later, I am very interested in the weight release program. Last year, I lost 40 lbs in 8 months, in the most healthy way (good nutrition and exercise). This year, I slowly started gaining weight back, and 1 year later, I continue to gain weight much more quickly. I am still working out regularly, and eating well. Would you recommend the Weight Release Kit? I am looking to take off 20 lbs at the most. Is that realistic for this formula? However, I want to build muscle and strength as well. Can I maintain the results of the program with the directed nutrition plan, and add white meat for protein (chicken, turkey, tuna). I am also wondering if the formulas simply release excess weight, or can I expect to lose inches and lower my body fat percentage? Thanks for your time and dedication to natural health!

    A:

Glad to hear about your success with the Full Body Detox!

I would highly recommend the Weight Release Kit and Regimen. NO MEAT though! Try vegan alternatives if you must have something - but no meats!

You will release weight (waste)! Your weight is nothing but waste!

Q: Hello, I've always heard that people can't "Spot loose" when it comes to weight, however, I've done it but don't really know what it was that cause the "spot weight" lose. My question and dilemma is: I tend to gain weight in my breast area and mid section but no where else. I am apple shaped. I know it isn't good for the heart and I want to loose mostly my breast. What would you recommend eating or not and what type of exercise would you recommend. Thank you!

    A:

Spot losing is a myth or sorts. I'm not saying it can't happen but it's highly unlikely and completely uncontrollable. Your body picks and chooses where it gains/loses weight and they are not always in the same spots. Some people gain weight proportionately and some gain it in certain spots (hips, thighs, breasts, belly). I do get asked this question a lot from women "How do I lose weight in my gut or hip area but not in my breast?". The truth is that there is no real answer for that.  Your own spot loss was probably just luckiness and apararently exactly where you needed it to.

As far as eating is concerned nothing causes the body to fat more than these two things. One is a high nutrient density, high alkaline, high raw, low fat, vegan diet. The other is juice fasting. Both are extremely helpful.

Foods know and studied to cause weight loss are beans, greens, cinnamon, cayenne pepper, raw apple cider vinegar, oatmeal, and fruits and veggies. Noe of which have been conclusive in causing the body to lose fat in certain spots of the body.

I run a highly successful health, nutrition, and fitness coaching company. I have coached many people to a vast number of health goals. Weight loss is one of my specialties. My 6 month program is designed to give people all the tools they need to reach their goals. My six month program includes lessons on weight loss, juice fasting, alkalinity, meal planning and meal timing, and also comes with a 90 day fitness plan. To see if my program is right for you fill out this health form found here (http://the-vegan-effect.healthcoach.integrativenutrition.com/forms) and claim your free first consultation.

The best and most efficient exercises for weight loss are cardio exercises. That is however only part of the equation. Learning how to interval train is your most efficient way to burn fat. You may burn more fat at 60 percent of your maximum heart rate but if you interval train where you change your intensity and heart rate you burn more calories in less time and more fat. Also with low intensity cardio the burn effect ends when you end your training as where interval training keeps your metabolism stoked for hours after training maximizing your burn.

Here is an example of interval training

4:30 seconds warm up (moderate speed)

    30 seconds sprint

    4:30 seconds recovery (moderate speed)

    30 seconds sprint

    4:30 seconds recovery (moderate speed)

Continue intervals for anywhere from 20-30 minutes

The second best way is to do high rep, low - moderate weight exercises. Circuit training where you go from one exercise to another with as little as 30 seconds rest in between sets.

    Here is an example:

    Jumping jacks 1 minute

    Crunches 1 minute

    Pushups 1 minute

    Squats 1 minute

3 sets of 12 alternating lunge to shoulder press

    3 sets chest press x 12

3 sets of bent over rows x 12

    3 sets of bicep curls

    3 sets of triceps extensions

    1 minute of jump squats

1 minute of Lunge and press

You want to focus more on exercises that move more than one muscle. Focus on compound exercises (squats, pushups/chest press, pull-up/lat pull downs). Also focus on exercises that make you move like jumping jacks, mountain climbers, and burpees.

    Hope this helps,

Q: I want to start the raw food diet, but do not want to lose weight has i am under weight already. I need tips to gain or at least maintain my weight. I do lift weights as part of my exercise routine.

    A:

    Thanks for the question,

Losing "weight" on a raw foods diet is a definite probability. But the weight might be excess fat and water retention due to detoxing. By weight I am assuming you are talking about muscle. It is not that complicated to keep muscle while on a raw food diet. The Vegan Effect diet program I created is 60-90 percent raw. Raw before dinner if that helps. I allow myself one cooked meal a day. For the most part the diet is a Low fat/high carb/high fruit/high alkaline diet.

The most important thing to remember is getting enough calories. My athletes (including raw body builders) typically eat 1000 calories of fruit for breakfast in the form of a green smoothie. Usually post workout. You need to eat roughly 3000 calories to maintain or grow muscle mass. Some of my mass building athletes eat as much as 5000 calories. Albeit at a higher fat ratio than our standard 70/10/20 carb/fat/protein ratios.

Please refer to my blog on building muscle ona vegan diet found here: http://the-vegan-effect.healthcoach1.integrativenutrition.com/blog/2012/05/building-muscle-on-vegan-diet

There is a raw organic food bar with 22 grams of protien that can be found here http://www.organicfoodbar.com/products/. *Note: I am not affiliated with them nor do I sell any supplements*. It is however a great bridge to meals.

Besides getting enough calories make sure you are getting around 20 grams of protein 5 times a day to maintain muscle mass. Sprouting beans, nut butters, seeds, and nuts help.

I run a 6 month online health coahcing program that includes lessons on sports nutrition and include a individualized fitness plan. I am currently running a ridiculous half off special to fill spots. If you are interested visit www.theveganeffect.com and contact me there.

Q: I am in need of cleansing my body and weight removal! (Removal and not loss because I don't want to find it again)! I need to remove about 80 pounds of unhealthy weight from my body and would like to do so in a natural way. I looked at both your Female Cleanse and the Full Body Cleanse, but don't know which is a better option for me to follow right now? I eat a lot of organic foods, I juice (some) but need to increase my water intake (A LOT). I don't drink much soda at all and when I do it is organic carbonated lemonade. I realize carbonated drinks are not good for us and limit how much I drink. My body lets me know when I have eaten something that is not good for me by causing my hands and feet to swell. To reduce this I drink water. I am allergic to wheat and try to stay away from it as much as possible. I have few ailments and have started working out again (cardio and weight training). I also looked at your weight loss products, but thought I should maybe detox first. What do you think? Any assistance you can offer on your products and which ones I should take is of great appreciation.

A: The best thing for you is the Full Body Cleanse. The Full Body Cleanse will allow you to remove unwanted weight, while also optimizing your entier body so that you can maintain that weight and live a healthier lifestyle.

Q: Sorry to bother you again but you are a wealth of knowledge and I appreciate all your information you give us. I am 44yrs old and have 20 pounds to lose. After I quit taking EHEDRINE I started gaining my weight back. I use to take EPHEDRINE to keep the weight off and no longer am able to order it in my state of Minnesota because it is banned. So I ordered some EPHDRA POWDER in hopes it would do the same for me as the ephedrine did but the ephdra powder doesn't SUPPRESS MY APPETITE like the ephedrine tablets did. I was wondering what I could add to the powder to bring out the appetite suppressant qualities in the ephdra powder. I have tried to brew it with my coffee and that hasn't helped either. I really would like to take this weight off and ephedrine was the only thing that helped me and I pray that your knowledge would help me to lose this excess weight. I bought your thyroid capsules and wondering how long before I will notice any energy difference. (I have a hypothyroid which is probably the cause of the gaining weight but the ephedrine helped me with that also). I pray you can

    A:

You're giving external factors too much power over you. Things never heal us, only placate us. Truly answers lie within. What did Ephedrine have that God did not put in you? Forget about keeping weight off, instead focus on maintaining your desired weight. Why do you need to suppress your appetite? What you suppress in one area will manifest in another area. Suppression does not heal, only hides things and allows things to grow. Your challenge is to cultivate self discipline and maintain your desired weight. Read my article â€EPHEDRA†under articles. Ephedrine is a damn drug! Drugs don't heal, they only suppress! Nature (Ephedra) takes time! My knowledge cannot help you to lose weight, but only stimulate you into taking control of your own life and health, especially pertaining to weight. Your power lies within! It dos not come from outside of self! The Kingdom of God is WITHIN!

Q: Does using 3/4 tsp of senna powder with 1tsp of metamucil cause weight gain? I have been doing this regime for over 5 years every morning. My intestinal health is wonderful----and although I have rediculous eating habbits and have now started excercing properly at the age of 42, I was wondering could this have contributed. I weighed 195lbs 7 years ago and now I weigh 248lbs. I have a goal to drop 60 pounds by August of 2008. My height is 5'10"

Q: I have a sister that is 113 lbs. 5ft. 6in and will like to gain some weight what can I surprise her with?

    A:

There are really no products to make one gain weight. In my opinion, people should just accept the way they are if they feel fine at a present weight. Most people want to gain weight for societal reasons and this is not being authentic. We should only consume things for NUTRITION! Life is about the spiritual, not the physical. The physical is only the vehicle for the spiritual.

If you want to give her a gift to help with protein, then I recommend the BIO-PROTEIN formula.

Q: I have purchased and started your FULL BODY DETOX (FBD) but I need your advice. I'm a so-called diabetic, I'm not overweight 5'9" 140lbs. I've read many of your articles including the one titled "Can I take my medication with FBD?" The first day I started the detox, I didn't take my meds and all I ate was fruits and veggies but my blood sugar was higher than it had been in a long time...356 to be exact. So I stopped and started this week, while taking my meds and it's still been higher than normal...in the 200's range. I understand that you stated that the herbs would be working against the meds since they're considered poisons in the body. My concern is this, I want to continue to cleanse my body but I don't want my blood sugar to stay out of control for an extended period of time...for obvious reasons. My question is, what do you suggest I do in continuing this cleanse? Will the FBD regulate my blood sugar levels over the next 2 weeks as my body begins to repair itself? Or should I continue taking my meds until I'm done with the cleanse? I plan to do the pancreas cleanse next. Your advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you. Peace

    A:

Like we clearly and unequivocally explain in so many of our articles, the body is and will regulate itself and you will see this via fluctuation. Levels will be up and down and inconsistent. Your body is going to heal in its own way so if you are concerned about high levels for extended periods of time, you may want to take your meds and refrain from taking the herbs until your levels reach a level you feel safe with. You know, religion is not the only thing that requires faith. Healing requires faith too!

Q: My daughter, who is 11 yrs old found a 1cm lump in her left breast 2wks ago. She was referred to a specialist and of course they want to surgically remove the lump. I let a co-worker scan the lump and they think it is a non-cancerous fibroandroma (I do ultrasound myself) and I saw a couple of cysts around the area as well. Of course I don't want the surgery for my daughter. Do you have any suggestions on how to get rid of all the abnormalities herbally? Maybe Yellow Dock tea, but I am concerned about her young age. Maybe a light detox. She started her period already at 11yrs old. Most healthcare professionals say fibroandromas are normal at this age when they begin their cycle due to the hormonal changes. I know better. My daughter drinks about 4-5 cups of purified water (aquavie machine) a day, no red meat, just chicken. Sneaks candy from school and little desserts at home maybe say 4 cookies a day. She gets sugar from natural OJ and Ocean Spray cranberry juice though. I am working on getting her off of sugar completely but it is a challenge. I’ve been a vegetarian for 5 years and am slowly going raw. Always seeking more knowledge. Also could there be a lack of something in her diet? My daughter is lazy and never works out play outside consistently (5'7" and 143lbs) she is tall for her age and is sliming her stomach down almost unnoticeable just a little pudge left. 1 day of PE in the schools. I am yust trying to paint the picture and give you her history.

    A:

HAVE THE CHILD PERFORM THE CHILDREN’S DETOX EVERY 3 MONTHS. I WOULD ALSO HAVE HER DRINK THE : DETOX TEA AS WELL (EVERY DAY, ONE CUP). SOUNDS LIKE YOU ALSO NEED TO WORK ON KEEPING THE CHILD'S COLON MOVING CONSISTENTLY AS WELL. THROUGH MODIFIED DIET AND NUTRITION THE LUMP CAN DISSOLVE ON IT'S OWN. HOWEVER, DISCIPLINE IS KEY HERE!

Q: I would like to try something for weight loss, and I wanted to know would the herbs affect my medication. I'm on Atentonol 50mg; htcz 25mg and synthyroid 0.125 mg, I'm a 53 year old female 5'10 and weigh 244, I haven't always been like this, sugar is my downfall, I do a lot of vegetables, and fruits, I only buy organic, the only meats I eat is wild salmon and a few fishes, any help would be greatly appreciated I got your web site listening to 102.5 in Atlanta, thanks much.

    A:

For weight release, perform the Full Body Detox kit and regimen followed by the Weight Release kit and regimen. Herbs will affect medication because herbs combat poisons and all of your meds are poisonous and toxic. Read some of our articles on this subject! You can be healed. Remember, drugs don't heal. Q: I'm a 47-year-old male 218lbs. I'm a type 2 diabetic with my levels under control. I have no sexual desire at all. After my yearly physical I found out my testosterone level is 277, kind of low right? That thought process is just not available to get aroused. I can get an erection but can't keep it. Would you also suggest a blood sugar program? It's causing my relationship not to move into the getting married goal.

    A:

I would suggest our Pancreas Kit and Regimen! You don't want diabetes under control. You want it GONE! At least I would think. If you have diabetes under control, you still have it! How else could you CONTROL it if it wasn't there or in existence?

Next, I recommend you give the Total Male Cleanse a try. Good maintenance herbs for your sexual dysfunction include Jackrabbit formula, Male Hormonal Formula, Prostate formula, and Circu-laid formula.

Cheer up, Beloved! There is help for you.
