Easy Tips To Eat Meat-Free and Stay Healthy

Going meat-free is a fantastic choice to improve your health, lower your budget, make a tremendous environmental impact, and the best part—it’s cruelty-free! However, when you go meat-free, there are some things you should keep in mind so you can be sure to get important nutrients you need to stay healthy. While meat itself wears no health halo, it is a dense source of certain nutrients. Though not the best source of these nutrients, many people rely on it heavily, and when they ditch meat they often forget that their body needs to get other whole food sources of the nutrients they once relied on meat from.

Meat-free living means more energy, less risk for disease, better digestion, and a lean body mass. It can also improve your skin, overall aging, and doesn’t require deprivation. If you’re looking to eat a meat-free diet, here are some foods to stock up on at the store to stay healthy, get plenty of nutrition, and satisfaction while enjoying a healthier heart, leaner figure, and tons more energy to boot!

Protein: Choose Whole Foods

Since most people are concerned with protein in a meatless diet, let’s tackle this macro-nutrient first. You can get protein from many foods—here are 25— that give your body all the amino acids it needs to stay healthy. Don’t worry about being hungry either; whole foods are just as satisfying and come with the added benefits of fiber and blood-sugar stabilizing nutrients such as magnesium. Meat also raises your blood sugar, so plant-based sources help reduce insulin levels, optimizing your blood sugar and satisfaction after meals. Zinc: Choose Nuts, Seeds, and Grains

Zinc is also found in meat and a very important nutrient for blood sugar, skin, digestion, and immune health. Though meat is a top source of heme iron (the form that’s easier to absorb), pairing plant-based sources with vitamin C (found in all fruits and vegetables) is an easy way to improve your uptake of non-heme iron. Oats and pseudograins like quinoa, teff, and amaranth are great options if you’re looking for healthy carbs, and pumpkin and cacao are two other foods that are also incredibly high in iron, as is cocoa powder (15-30 percent in 2 tablespoons). Beans and legumes are also a good source if you enjoy them, with lentils, black beans, soybeans, tofu, and tempeh being some of the best.

B vitamins: Almost All Plant-Based Foods

Meat is also very high in B vitamins, but so are plant-based foods. Even foods like nutritional yeast, spirulina, and other forms of blue green algae contain vitamin B12 (though you should still take a supplement, even if you eat meat for assurance your body is absorbing it efficiently). B vitamins such as B2, B3, B5, B6, and B9 are found abundantly in plant-based foods and contribute to healthy skin, hair, energy levels, stress management, and brain health.     Q: I am a woman who happens to be diabetic and now I am pregnant. I would like to know what foods I should eat and restrain from while I am still pregnant. I am also taking insulin to keep my blood sugar levels low enough as not to harm my baby. They are telling me I need to eat dairy and meat to meet the dietary requirements for a healthy baby.     Q: I am a 55 year old female. I have an overactive bladder. I am trying to control it myself, without medication. I have not tried herbs.     Being raw or vegan does not have to be hard or expensive. The most inexpensive food are rice and beans. If you are budget consciense you should gravitate towards those foods. Stach based foods are super cheap. You should check out the book "eating vegan on 4 dollars a day" or any of Dr. Mcdougal's programs.

    Q: Hey wassup Dherbs.com, I got a question about when people try to say they clean the meat with vinegar and citruses before they cook it. What does "cleaning" the meat have to do with the pesticides, worms, and other harmful things added to the meat? I read from your articles that the worms have a shell that forms in very high temperatures so it doesn't kill them.

    Q: I've made a lifestyle change about 8 months ago. I excluded all dairy, wheat, grains, gluten, legumes, sugar, oils (except olive oil). I still eat minimum amount of meat (chicken, fish) maybe 2 -3 times/wk. I'm slowly trying to eliminate meat totally as I only use to make my meals more filling.     Q: I have progressive FSGS (renal disease) my creatine is currently 3.03 and I am spilling approx 630 mil of protein in a 24 hr period. I was diagnosed with this disease at the age of 12.     Q: Hello, I have the herpes virus that occasionally causes me to get a cold sore about once a year.     Q: Hi it's me again. I just read what you said about meat and what I don't understand is if meat was not good for us why in the Bible people eat Lamb. How would you explain back in the Bible times during Abraham and Moses when they use to offer sacrifice and kill a lamb were they cruel and going against God.     Q: My question is regarding fibroids. I have been told I have had fibroids about the size of someone 3 months pregnant. I have been told there are two in clusters. They gave me the diameters, but I don't have that information at this time. My OB/GYN has told me he believes it is causing me to be slightly anemic. I have been trying some remedies on my own like more exercise and a change in diet. My primary physician does not recommend surgery she has me taking iron ferrous sulfate supplements twice per day to help with my iron count. It seems to be helping. The only problem I have with taking the iron supplements is that it sometimes causes constipation and I am normally pretty regular. I usually eliminate 2 times per day sometimes 3. My OB/GYN on the other hand keeps pushing for me to having surgery.& amp; nbsp; They had me take BC pills, however I took myself off of them because they made me sick. I took them only for 6 months. I'm 45 and have never taken BC pills ever and I don't want to start now. I've never been pregnant. I flow heavy on my 2nd and 3rd day heavy and after that it is manageable. My cycle has improved however I want to reduce the flow on those days if possible and of course dissolve the fibroid if at all possible. Doctors tell me they won't go away unless removed. I used to be on my cycle for 7 days and 4 of those days were heavy. Now I'm normally on for 4 days and only the 2nd and 3rd day are heavy. I know that as I reach menopause they may shrink in size, however I'm still aways off from that. I eat no red meat however I do eat fish and poultry. I eat a pretty good balance of vegetables and fruits, mostly raw and steamed. I drink lactaid milk. I don't eat much dairy except cheese and eggs occasionally. I do have a weakness, I love potato chips. I know this is not good. I can feel the fibroid get bigger when I eat them. When I stop for a period of time it decreases in size. At least I feel like it does. I'm not a sugar craver, however during the week before my cycle I'll crave sweets. I usually resist. I feel it's my diet that has caused the fibroids as well as every female in my family has had a hysterectomy due to fibroids. I think it is also hereditary as well.     Q: I am interested in starting the Full Body Detox program. At this time, I would like to know which program is best for me. At current, I have started removing things from my diet as of 2 weeks ago (pork, chicken, red meat, I'm trying with the fish but it's hard!)
