Give Something Back By Giving Organic

0-921216161-organic-festival

Yes we know. It’s not THAT time of year yet. But the season of giving is not far off.

We use gifts to show others how much we care for them. And although it’s true that it’s the thought that counts, when budgets are tight it’s easy to slip into the habit of going for what seems to be the cheapest option. And yet there’s a hidden cost to the gift choices we make.

Bargain-basement, plastic, chemical-laden gifts can come with hidden health hazards like phthalates, heavy metals, parabens and other nasties that pose a longer term threat to health and are definitely not the most eco-friendly option either.

Gifts that do good

A good gift does ‘good’ on many levels at once and is one with some lasting value, so here are some thoughts for how to enjoy holiday giving in a way that doesn’t cost the earth.

If you already live a sustainable and organic lifestyle you probably also have friends who haven’t quite made the leap yet and who don’t want to hear you talk about it. So why not let some lovely organic gifts do your talking for you.

When you give organic you also show how much you care for the environment as well – it’s like giving two gifts at once! If your organic gifts are also fairly traded you are giving in a third important way – to producers in developing countries who benefit from a better deal thanks to Fairtrade principles.

Thanks to the growing number of people who choose to live organic and substantial lifestyles there are many different types of gifting. Here are out top tips.

Beauty is as beauty does Most of us buy beauty products because we want to see results on our skin. But buying organic beauty products means you are investing in something that ‘performs’ on several levels all the way from the farm to your face.

A truly organic and ethical product pays attention to every step of the production process and results in a product that you can feel confident in buying. Organic ingredients have been shown to contain higher levels of natural antioxidants that help to defend against free-radical damage caused by stress, environmental pollutants and the sun. There is also evidence that they can protect both collagen and elastin, the structural proteins of the skin, necessary for a healthy, smooth complexion. Some of the ingredients used widely in organic skincare such as rose, witch hazel and white tea have been shown scientifically to have very potent anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant activity on skin cells.

Make an organic gift basket Filling a woven or willow basket with little luxuries like organic beauty or bodycare products is not only satisfying to do it’s fantastic to receive because everything in it has been personalised. We hate to boast – well not really! – but Neal’s Yard Remedies’ extensive range of high quality organic products – free from mineral oils, parabens , synthetic colours or fragrances and GM ingredients – makes the natural choice for your loved ones. Remember also that you can make delicious gift baskets from organic foods as well (see below)!

Give the gift of organic wisdom Honestly, we are happier when we spend our money on experiences rather than things. A study this year from Cornell University found that people who spend money on experiences like a holiday, a show, or simply a nice meal report higher levels of life satisfaction than those who always go for material things. That’s not news — previous studies have shown that what are termed  ‘experiential purchases’ give us greater satisfaction. The reason why may surprise you: people get more enjoyment out of things they can talk about.

Why not give someone an opportunity to learn a new skill for life with Neal’s Yard Remedies’ extensive range of courses in natural health and beauty.

Soil Association Organic Farm School offers practical courses at organic farms across the UK in growing food, rearing animals, cooking and rural crafts, learning directly from organic farmers and expert practitioners. Likewise, the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) runs courses and produces factsheets and publications on energy, gardening, building and all things sustainable.

When it comes to the basics of self-sufficiency (at a household or community level) most of us don’t have a clue. Why not give someone an opportunity to learn a new skill for life. For online listings of providers of green courses in the UK visit My Green Directory for some inspiration.

Something for the home… Give your home an aromatherapy treat with organic room sprays and candles that give light and ambiance but don’t fill the room withunintended pollutants. Look for products that use real and organic essential oils instead of toxic synthetics.

…or something to wear Organic textiles are grown without the use of harmful pesticides or GMOs; promoting a healthier farm and environment.  Nearly a quarter of all the world’s insecticides and 10% of pesticides are sprayed on cotton, but with many high street retailers now stocking organic, it’s easier than ever to give ‘clean’ clothes.

Better food… Around 30% of your carbon footprint comes from your food choices. That makes food the single most important, everyday way for people to reduce their own environmental impact.

Organic farmers use natural processes such as energy from the sun to fix nitrogen in the soil, crop and livestock rotations, and natural predators for pest control. Organic farming can also be more energy efficient, mainly because it does not use inorganic nitrogen fertiliser, which is produced from petrol-chemicals. Organic farms also have 50% more wildlife, support more and better farming jobs.

According to the UK’s Soil Association if all UK farmland was converted to organic farming, at least 3.2 million tonnes of carbon would be taken up by the soil each year – the equivalent of taking nearly 1 million cars off the road.

…and better booze A bit of organic tipple also makes a fantastic present. So get the party going with organic wine, beer, cider and spirits safe in the knowledge that you may even have less of a hangover in the morning. On the subject of hangovers, you might also want to buy yourself some milk thistle, a liver-loving detoxifying, immune-boosting herb that should be in every holiday first aid kit!

And finally…what’s that gift box made from? Paper and cardboard production are highly energy intensive and at this time of year we use – and throw away – so much of it. At Neal’s Yard Remedies, for instance, our gorgeous gift boxes are FSC certified, sustainably sourced and printed with vegetable-based inks. By using carbon balanced paper in our gift boxes, we’ve been able to give everlasting protection to 815m2 of endangered tropical forest. We’ve also been able to balance the equivalent of 9700 kg of carbon dioxide. This year, make sure that your gift boxes and wrapping papers are made from recycled or FSC paper – and when you finish your frenzy of unwrapping don’t forget to recycle them!

Q: WE ARE VEGETARIANS, AND WERE EATING A LOT OF SOY PRODUCTS UNTIL YOUR NEWS LETTER CAME OUT ABOUT SOY PRODUCTS. DOES IT MAKE A DIFFERENCE IF THEY ARE ORGANIC SOY PRODUCTS? WHAT IS WRONG WITH ORGANIC YOGURT? It doesn't matter if the soy is organic or not! What's wrong with organic yogurt?

    A:

Please read our article "DANGEROUS DAIRY". There's plenty wrong with it! But remember, soy is far better than meat and dairy!

Q: Hello I am currently on the full body detox and I have a question for you. How do you feel about organic chicken from a credited organic food store? I was wondering if eating organic steamed chicken was ok and whats your take on almond milk.

    A:

    Thanks for the question.

Animal products are not part of the detox program. The detox protocol is a raw food detox as well. Most if not all food should be consumed raw. Organic meat is a double edged sword. On one hand you have an animal pumped full of anti biotics and on the other hand you have an animal refused antibiotics if they are sick. Which they routinely are being that they are crammed in sheds. The amount of land required by the USDA to be considered free range is the size of a sheet of printer paper. Birds kept in such close quarters communicate diseases fast. I do not recommend any animal products when on a detox.

The main issue with detoxing is lessening the workload of the livers and kidneys so they can clean house. Animal protien is acidic to the body and forces the body to work overtime digesting the excess protein.

Almond milk is fine if you make it yourself. Its really not that hard to do if you have a good blender. If you can't blend it yourself you can buy it from the store but remember that it's pasteurized and probably has added sugars which you want to avoid.

Here is a quick web resource but I am sure you could find others

Q: Is sea salt and warm water a good natural laxative? If so how often do you recommend the use of sea salt for elimination? I was reading The Master Cleanser by Stanley Burroughs and it gives this recommendation, along with drinking lemon water mixed with organic syrup and cayenne pepper. Is it safe to give myself an enema 2xs per day using a hot water bottle filled with fresh squeezed organic lemon and distilled water? Asking this because Bzod had me to listen to 88.3 today here in Cincinnati and the guy (Mike) was telling how he does this regularly and has great results.

    A:

Yes, sea salt in water is a mild laxative!

You can do it as often as you FEEL the need to drink or take it.

You can also consume the Master Cleanse (cayenne, maple syrup, lemon juice) if you choose. You can drink this as much as you like depending on how you feel.

And yes, you can perform enemas 2X a day! Enemas are very helpful for health!

Q: I started my Full Body Cleanse today do I have to take it at those times specified? Also it is recommended to eat raw, however I never saw Organic mentioned. Organic is extremely costly here in Philly and you have to go a distance to get organic. What do you suggest?

    A:

No, you don't have to take it at the specified times. It's just a reference to give you an idea of how to spread out taking the individual formulas.

Eating organic food is best, but not prescribed as we all don't have access to organic foods. As long as you stay RAW, you should still receive the benefits of the cleanse.

Q: My daughter is now 6 years old and at the age of 1 was diagnosed with asthma. She was on albuterol and predisone for 4 years off and on and only taking the medicine when her asthma flared up. While she was on this medicine I noticed that she had lack of an appetite. I started giving her organic milk and keeping her tightly clothed in the winter and by the time she was 4.5 years I got it under control that she didn't have an attack for a year. During that year I noticed that she eats. She constantly wants to eat, and her stomach is getting bigger even though she is highly active. I'm pretty sure the medicine had something to do with this. She recently had a slight attack 3 months ago, and I've been looking all over the place for something natural to give her when she does have asthma attacks instead of giving her that medicine which is poisoning her system. If I gave her a Children's Detox would this help with the bloating of her stomach? What can I give her that is natural and effective to help with the asthma should it occur again?

    A:

Let the child perform the Children's Detox. Give her pear juice, plum juice, and prune juice periodically. The child sounds constipated. If the stomach is bloated and growing, clearly the child is backed up. Feed the child more fruits and vegetables (as they are loaded with enzymes which help with bowel movements).

The asthma can be knocked out with the herbs Mullein leaf, Eucalyptus, Lobelia, and Wild Cherry Bark. Give them to the child in tea form. Alternate the teas, switching them up, making sure she drinks all of them. Mullein leaf by far is the best. Asthma is nothing but a mucus condition. Rub essential oil of Eucalyptus on the child's chest before bedtime. First rub on some olive oil, and then apply the essential oil of Eucalyptus. We have a great Respiratory inhaler made with the best essential oils for lung conditions such as asthma.

Q: I was reading your article about vinegar being harmful to the body because of its acids and I was curious to know what you think of the Organic unpasturized, unfiltered apple cider vinegar with mother? I saw that at the end of the article it stated that "if you must" use vinegar to use the organic apple cider vinegar but, I have read many places that it has many health benefits such as reducing bad cholesterol, regulating blood pressure, eliminating toxic waste from the body, fighting fungal and bacterial infections, helping relieve joint pains, breaking down fat which helps in natural weight reduction.

    A:

I approve of apple cider vinegar for health purposes. Some good stuff!

Q: I'm doing the ANTI-VIRAL CLEANSE AND REGIMENand I would like to know if I can used organic almond milk with oat bran cereal from bob's red mill and order organic cereal. Also what is the 35% HYDROGEN PEROXCIDE used for?

    A:

You have free will and can do as you like, Beloved. We recommend all raw (and unprocessed) so if you really want to eat the almond milk and cereal, it's your choice! 35% FGHP should only be used for enema purposes (half ounce added to the water).

Q: I am in need of cleansing my body and weight removal! (Removal and not loss because I don't want to find it again)! I need to remove about 80 pounds of unhealthy weight from my body and would like to do so in a natural way. I looked at both your Female Cleanse and the Full Body Cleanse, but don't know which is a better option for me to follow right now? I eat a lot of organic foods, I juice (some) but need to increase my water intake (A LOT). I don't drink much soda at all and when I do it is organic carbonated lemonade. I realize carbonated drinks are not good for us and limit how much I drink. My body lets me know when I have eaten something that is not good for me by causing my hands and feet to swell. To reduce this I drink water. I am allergic to wheat and try to stay away from it as much as possible. I have few ailments and have started working out again (cardio and weight training). I also looked at your weight loss products, but thought I should maybe detox first. What do you think? Any assistance you can offer on your products and which ones I should take is of great appreciation.

A: The best thing for you is the Full Body Cleanse. The Full Body Cleanse will allow you to remove unwanted weight, while also optimizing your entier body so that you can maintain that weight and live a healthier lifestyle.

Q: I wrote to you a couple weeks ago asking if it was normal for me to have an outbreak only a day or two into the full body cleanse kit. You wrote back and told me that an outbreak is the body healing. It is two weeks later and I am still having an outbreak! Is this a good sign? Do you think this outbreak may continue on through my anti viral kit? I have been eating mostly fruits and vegetables, however I felt like I needed more substance and I was not enjoying my food at all... so I bought organic noodles and organic tomato sauce (sea salt only, tomatoes, no sugar, you get the point). Is adding some of this into my diet going to make the kits less effective or possibly not work?

    A:

The outbreak is a result of your body trying to eliminate the toxicity and impurities from your body. Continue to follow the guidelines of the Cleanse.

In regards to what you ate, YES, they make the cleanse less effective, so you may not want to eat much of cooked foods. Raw foods will optimize the cleanse. If you are having trouble staying full, try more healthy fats, like avocado, coconut cream, or raw nuts and seeds.

Q: I'm doing the Full Body Cleanse and I have a few questions about it: I get tired of drinking just the distilled water and I'd like to drink the herbal teas, but I don't like it by itself. Would it mess things up to add a pack or two of Splenda to my tea or maybe honey? I can't stand the salads with the olive oil or apple cider vinegar or the lemon juice as dressing and it makes me gag. I have To have some sort of salad dressing. What kind would be suitable? Do I look for sugar-free? Or organic and natural? I found one that is organic and natural, but it has 3 grams of sugar in it. Without eating all my whole grained breads and other fiber, I haven't had much of a bowel movement in 3 days, should I wait a while yet? (I had surgery on my bowels and always had to take fiber tablets and eat lots of grains to get my bowels to move.) I haven't done the enemas yet, (low on money) should I try that? Or should I resume my fiber tablets I normally take? Any type of fiber I could add to my fruit smoothies in the morning? I want to also do the female cleanse. Is it ok to do that immediately after I finish the full body cleanse or should I wait for a little while? Thank you for all your help, I feel much better than I did before and I just started this detox a week ago, lost 10 pounds, too, woohoooooo! Thank you

    A:

    1. Instead of splenda, use agave, stevia, or grade b maple syrup as a sweetener.

    2. In re Salad Dressing, an organic and natural one is great. You can also check our website for salad dressing recipes.

    3. The fiber pills are not part of the cleanse, so we wouldn't advise those. Fruit is you best choice of fiber so look into eating more papaya, mango, figs, etc. And yes, colonics (and enemas) would greatly help you - undoubtedly!

    4. You can do the Female Cleanse right after you finish detoxing. There's no need to wait!

Q: What organic shampoo and conditioner would you recommend using? Also, while detoxing, is Navy beans an acceptable food to eat if I want something cooked or does it cause mucus? Is it really a nutritional bean?

    A:

Aubrey Organic is a good brand of shampoo and conditioner.

You may eat navy beans but they are mucus forming despite a few nutritional benefits.

Q: Unfortunately, I think it will be impossible to order and get the products you mentioned. I ordered a pack of organic seeds last year from Holland, and experienced many difficulties getting it. (due to the very bad posting services in my country) Meanwhile, I made some researches about olive leaf, and listened to my inner voice. I'm going to try to use olive leaf tea as a natural anti-viral. What is your opinion about that? And do you have any information about the best way to prepare this drink as a medical treatment? (dosage, how much time it has to be simmered and how)

    A:

You are very welcome, Beloved! Olive Leaf is a very powerful and effective herb, especially for cases of so-called viruses. Because it's an herb you really can't take too much of it. Personally, 3 is the magic number, so I'd recommend 3 times per day (tea or capsule form).

Q: I am wondering who makes (Dherbs or a 3rd party) your products, where and in particular if you use organic herbs or not. I couldn't find any info on the contents of your products on the site. Maybe I didn't look hard enough.

    A:

We make every Dherbs formula and would never entrust a 3rd party to make our formulas. NEVER! We use organic herbs when available. This means we use about 60% organic herbs as many herbs are not certified organic and we have no choice but to use non-organic herbs when a formula calls for it, as again, every single herb you may need for a formula is not organic. This is just being truthful with you, Sir! However, we activate the intelligence of the non-organic herb via the plant's deva so we still get what we are looking for and so do the people/customers!

Q: I purchased 100.00 in organic herbs. Chapparal leaf, poke weed, psyllium husk powder, Pau d'Arco Bark. I purchased these herbs because my husband exposed me to the virus. I did not want to use traditional drugs to kill the virus. The only symptoms I have is the crescent moon under my eyes. I am 61 years old. My husband is African and refuses to use protection to prevent illness. Are they safe in small quantities?

    A:

The herbs are safe in small quantities and actually all quantities as herbs are 100% safe!
