Have you ever had one of those days when you hit a wall? You’ve run your body hard, you’ve indulged in food and/or drink past the point of fun, and now you just feel “yucky.”
You need a total system reboot, and you’re starting to think about a cleanse.
As stated in my previous article, sometimes rigid rules, restrictions, and limitations related to food — especially for an extended period of time — can be “too much” and ultimately not serve your body’s needs.
Certain cleanses or detox programs are incredibly restrictive and many people have a hard time sticking to them, creating a feeling of failure that can be difficult to overcome.
I have found a simple and totally “doable” way to get my nutrition goals back on track. Once a month, I reset and renew in just two days by following a simple weekend cleansing program.
I call it my “weekend reboot,” and anyone can do it.
The basic guidelines are as follows: a simple green juice for breakfasts, a big, beautiful salad at midday when digestion is strongest (I add lean protein to support my active lifestyle), a healthy smoothie for a snack if needed, and a soup with a side of raw or lightly steamed vegetables for dinner.
I’m not asking you to starve yourself or live on a single ingredient alone. Rather, a “weekend reboot,” full of nutrient-dense, fluid-rich foods will nourish and sustain you, prevents big drops in blood sugar and is MUCH less stressful on your system than other — more aggressive — cleanse programs.
No matter the month, no matter the season, your body will FEEL BETTER after a “total system reboot,” and the best news is that you can make great strides toward feeling better in just one weekend by following the guidelines above! The following is one of my favorite recipes for a green smoothie that I love to indulge in when doing my monthly “reboot:”
Creamy Green Avo-Mint Smoothie Snack (tastes like melted mint chocolate chip ice cream!)
- 2 handfuls of light-tasting greens (i.e. baby spinach, feldsalat, or lettuce)
- 1/2 of a ripe avocado-2 pitted dates
- 1 frozen, sliced banana
- 2 cups unsweetened nondairy milk
- 1 handful of ice cubes
- 3/4 tsp. pure mint extract
- 1/2 to 1 full scoop vanilla flavored single ingredient protein powder such as egg white, hemp, pea, or whey (optional)
- unsweetened cocoa powder for dusting the top (optional)
Add greens, avocado, banana, nondairy milk, ice cubes, mint extract and protein powder to your blender. Blend on high. Pour into glasses and dust with cocoa powder, if using. Serves two.
