Healthy Lifestyle Changes Might Reverse Cell Aging

Eat whole foods. Exercise. Meditate. Rely on supportive family and friends. All of these things have been linked, whether independently or together, with better health. And now, a new study shows it’s never too late to start reaping the benefits of changing to healthy lifestyle — and that those changes could even reverse cell aging.

The study, published in the journal The Lancet Oncology, shows that healthy lifestyle changes can have an impact on aging and age-related diseases on a cellular level, by increasing the length of telomeres. Telomeres are the “caps” that protect the ends of chromosomes, similar to how shoelaces have plastic caps to stop them from fraying.

Shorter telomeres have been linked in previous research with cell aging and increased risks of age-related diseases like cancer and dementia, as well as premature death.

“We know from earlier studies that eating an unhealthy diet, smoking cigarettes, being under chronic emotional stress, loneliness and depression may shorten telomeres. But this is the first one we can actually increase the length of them,” study researcher Dean Ornish, M.D., told HuffPost. Ornish is the founder and president of the Preventive Medical Research Institute, clinical professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, and medical editor at HuffPost. He’s also conducted extensive research throughout his career evaluating the effects of lifestyle changes on coronary heart disease.

For the study, Ornish and colleagues assigned 35 men with low-risk prostate cancer, who were not being treated for their cancers but were undergoing active surveillance, to one of two groups. One group of 10 men was instructed to make lifestyle changes — including eating a plant-based, vegan diet of whole foods, exercising moderately, receiving social support, and practicing stress-management strategies such as mindfulness and yoga — for five years, while the other group of 25 men was not instructed to make any lifestyle changes. All of the study participants’ telomeres were measured at the start of the study.

Researchers followed up with the men after the study period, when they again measured their telomeres. They found that telomere length actually increased among the men who were assigned to undergo the lifestyle intervention, by an average of 10 percent. Meanwhile, telomere length decreased by an average of 3 percent among the men not assigned to a lifestyle intervention.

They also found that the amount telomeres lengthened was linked with the degree to which the men implemented the healthy lifestyle changes, with those making more changes experiencing greater lengthening of their telomeres.

Telomere research is still young, and more research is needed to understand what exactly a 10 percent average increase in telomere length translates to in terms of disease and death risk. But the findings do tell us that “our genes are predisposition, but not our fate,” Ornish said. “To the extent we’re wiling to make changes to diet and lifestyle, we can change things that were once thought to be impossible.”

    Q: I have the alternative diet and lifestyle manual and want to make sure that this applies to the respiratory condition as well. Can I have the rice bread with no gluten or wheat? or rice pasta being that I have sarcoid? Can I eat cold water fish or venison in small portions along with veggies? What about rice or soy milk or protein whey shake for breakfast once or twice a week?     The manual applies when you are FINISHED with a cleanse or kit. Follow the regimen's diet. It clearly states NO COOKED FOOD. You are asking us about cooked food here. Stick to the diet plan and you will be alright! You are asking about foods no good for your condition. Whey is crap. Meat is no good. Grains are no good for you as well. They all produce too much mucus!

    Q: I am very interested in Dherbs herbal formulas - they appear to be high quality, good formulas. I have a question for you. I eat a vegan diet, about 50% raw foods (sometimes more), get regular exercise, and love to spend time in nature. I am a generally healthy person who rarely gets sick. The topic of organ donors comes up from time to time, and most recently in regard to recently deceased NFL player Chris Henry, whose family gave his eyes and other organs up.     I respect free will, but our organs should never be donated. Never! The only exception is if the organs are coming from a very highly and spiritually evolved person (which is rare in our society). Organs carry memory. If you're born with organs you should die with them.

    Q: I've made a lifestyle change about 8 months ago. I excluded all dairy, wheat, grains, gluten, legumes, sugar, oils (except olive oil). I still eat minimum amount of meat (chicken, fish) maybe 2 -3 times/wk. I'm slowly trying to eliminate meat totally as I only use to make my meals more filling. My plan is to do Ozone Therapy midway through the detox program, which also rid the body of toxins.

    Q: I have fibroids that are altering my lifestyle. I have decided to have the surgery because I look 5 months pregnant. Would the FIBRIOD BUSTER really help shrink anything at this point?     The Paleo diet.... something nice.... something nice.... heh.

    The Paleo diet emphasizes drinking water and eating local/organic food. They shun dairy, processed food, and grains. I agree. 

    I disagree with just about everything else. For paleo theory to be correct Vegans either have to not exist or be doing very poorly. Wrong on both accounts. They say vegans just can't get enough protein or that we are missing x,y,z in our diets. Never mind that every major paleo website sells the supplements they say only vegans are deficient in. "Vegans don't get enough protein so eat meat and then buy our protein powder supplements. Vegans don't get enough omega 3's so just eat fish and while you are at it buy our krill oil supplements." And so on. The paleo diet is just the low carb diet re-branded.     Vegans are doing extremely well and in most long term studies Vegans end up on top in both health and longevity.

    They claim carbohydrates make you fat and that the more you eat the more you weigh. Why then do the 80-10-10 crowd all appear not only all thin but extremely healthy? Carbohydrates are your bodies main source of fuel. Preferred source. Every cell in your body runs on glucose. The human body is amazing. The is a secondary source of energy in case of starvation, or glucose deprived. The body starts to burn fat as fuel known as keytosis. This was only meant as a way to keep the body running during famine. However the paleo people think this is a preferred state to be in. It's not. Look up keto-acidosis. Could be deadly.The bottom line is that people will always be looking forward to the latest fad that tells them "good things about their bad habits".

    Q: I am just becoming a vegan going on 20 years in June, and it takes a lot of discipline. I was wondering if you knew any good recipes for some good vegan style dishes.     Q: I was on the computer, I came across the article on the big ole butt. In the article you said (paraphrase) that successful women tend to be sick. Are you saying that these women should not try to be successful? in my opinion if black women are overweight, they cannot blame the corporate lifestyle, they have to blame themselves. We are all in control of our own lifestyle, those same corporate black women, if they were working 9-5 at some factory somewhere, they would still be fat. I do agree with you when you stated that many black women lack will power to fast. I think that we lack will power to do anything that is beneficial to us. Yes I do agree with you that the steatopygia female does look like a "pig". their faces tend to take on pig like facial features. Yes you are right that miss steatopygia tends to wear tight pants, (in my opinion that type of backside is stinky looking). So yes there is some parts of the article I do agree with. Far too many of us black women, tend to be stubborn and too defensive. I am glad that your site does exist, because far too many sites like to blame "whitey". You are one of the few black health specialists, that put the blame on us, and you should because our lifestyle is our responsibility.

    No, these women should BECOME successful, but not lose their health and/or souls in the process of becoming successful. The corporate sector has played a great "role" in Black women gaining weight because the jobs are too sedentary and they have access to too much sugary junk which converts to fat because corporate jobs don't allow them to burn off the fat. I've seen this firsthand with many once fine sisters who blew up like houses within a 5 year period. Corporate America was the venue in which Black women CHOSE to let their health go by the wayside, at least the majority of them. Thank you for sharing your views and sentiments on this Dear Sista!     Q: I was online searching for some natural treatments for hair growth in Black Men when I came across your article. I must say that I believe it was so on point that I decided not to look any further. I'm 44 years of age and started noticing my hair thinning when about 12 years ago. I was one of those that you wrote about in your article chasing a lifestyle that is no longer an interest to me. I did fall into some bad habits that were not good for my health off and on over the past 15 years or so more off than on. My body type I would describe as athletic. I'm tone, and strong when I exercise regularly. I'm about 150lbs @ 5'11". My diet is mostly vegetables but from time to time I feel I have to eat fish or chicken. Not necessarily prepared in the healthiest way I'm sure. I just got out of one of my "on" spells so to speak. Meaning the drinking of beer and cigarettes. I've been smoking and drinking beer now since September 2006 after not having done anything but live healthy for six years before that. As soon as my wife and I came back to the states and started working and runnign again these old destructive habits appeared again in my life. I only blame myself though. Right now my hair and skin suffer from the chemical poisoning from the habits that I just mentioned. I am prepared to take your advice about righteous living to heart and start fresh again. Is there a mild remedy that can work with me to stimulate the re-growth of my hair in the spots where it is balding in that classic balding pattern? I am generally very healthy when I doing right and even now rarely get sick. But my sickness manifest in stress and bad habits to num the pain of having to live this way when don't really want to.     Q: I was told by doctors that I have to go to surgery to replace severe valve leaking, eventually could damage lungs.     Q: I am a 38 yr old single black female smoker desiring pregnancy. 3 yrs. ago I was diagnosed with pcos, type II diabetes as a result, along with a fibroid on the left side of my uterus.     Back problems also have an emotional cause. Are you bending over backwards for somebody or something? Do you feel that your back is against the wall in some regard or matter? Turning vegan is a good idea and should really improve your health.     Q: I found this health article on the risk of getting cancer from working at night. I'm a night worker. have been for 16 yrs, and my sleeping and eating patterns haven?t been the same since. The article mentions taking melatonin...is that safe and effective? Also do you have any herbal cures for us night timers to reverse the effects of working the graveyard shift? I can sure use them?

    Cancer stems from a host of things, not just one thing like working at night. Disease results from negative thoughts/mindset, negative attitude, poor diet; insalubrious lifestyle, and insalubrious environment. You don't need to take melatonin. Your body (pineal gland) produces it. As a night worker, just make sure when you are sleeping in the day time your room is completely dark, just like how Dracula used to sleep in the darkness of his coffin during the daylight hours. This is why Dracula was a thousand years old but looked young. He slept during the day (which produces melatonin which is an anti-aging hormone) and he operated at night whereby he also produced melatonin. Dude never aged! You do the same, just don't suck on no necks to get blood though -- LOL!!!! And no! There are no herbs to reverse anything that comes from actions or behaviors that are unnatural. You reverse the effects of night-time work by doing the opposite. In your case, it's your job (which you don't want to quit unless you can find another one), so you just get some good sleep during the day in pitch darkness.
