Ah, holiday party season—a time for celebrating the season of giving, namely through heaps of hors d’oeuvres and bevies of boozy beverages. The Tipsy Vegan’s Top Holiday Party Tips

The First Rule: There are no rules (sort of). 
There really are no rules for throwing a memorable get-together with family and friends, as long as your bar is well-stocked, you have delicious food, and, most importantly, you’re ready to have the time of your life! As host or hostess with the most(est), you set the tone from the minute the invites go out.

Seasonal Sippers
Cocktails are of the utmost importance. Every party bar should have a standard selection of white and red wines, vodka, whiskey, gin, rum, tequila, and a few different types of beer, but nothing screams holiday party like a specialty drink tailored to the season. One or two specialty cocktails—like the Holly Jolly Peppermintini or Tipsy Elf’s Punch—are fun for sure, but a menu of four or five is even better, and will really knock your guests’ socks off (and maybe even more by night’s end!).

Cocktail Clues 
For specialty drinks, offer both sampling-size glasses, to allow guests to try each concoction with minimal commitment, as well as regular-size glasses for when they pick their favorite. Infuse cocktails with your personal flair by giving them fun names and adding unique, seasonal garnishes and special touches, such as using icicles or tightly packed snowballs in place of ice cubes. Just be sure that the snow or ice is fresh and crystal clear, if you catch my drift. For the overachievers among us (you know who you are!), printing a specialty cocktail menu that lists the main ingredients and displaying it on the bar will no doubt garner you kudos, not to mention the inevitable Martha Stewart comparisons. 

Gentle Jollity

    A:

    We make every Dherbs formula and would never entrust a 3rd party to make our formulas. NEVER! We use organic herbs when available. This means we use about 60% organic herbs as many herbs are not certified organic and we have no choice but to use non-organic herbs when a formula calls for it, as again, every single herb you may need for a formula is not organic. This is just being truthful with you, Sir! However, we activate the intelligence of the non-organic herb via the plant's deva so we still get what we are looking for and so do the people/customers!

    Q: I am just becoming a vegan going on 20 years in June, and it takes a lot of discipline. I was wondering if you knew any good recipes for some good vegan style dishes. I really want to establish a vegan restaurant. I have purchased your Alternative Diet and Lifestyle Manual, and I know its healthier to eat vegan.     Q: How often should one eat cook food? I'm a vegan, I do not consume any meat, seafood, milk what so ever. I eat water cresses like everyday so as cook food. Like white rice with black bean sauce, spinach, and pasta at time's I'll eat some Chinese fried rice, veggie roll, steamed vegetables, any advice?

    A:

    You can eat cooked food as much as you like. However, try to incorporate as many nutrient-dense raw foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, raw nuts and seeds, into your diet to make sure you are receiving an adequate amount of nutrients.

    Q: I have a question for you. I love reading your articles and I was reading about the importance of iodine in a vegan diet. I am vegan and I'm scared I'm getting iodine and you wrote that seaweed would fulfill that need. Did you mean Sushi seaweed, the roasted nori kind? Or fresh seaweed? I haven't been able to find fresh seaweed anywhere, except for already prepared seaweed salad. Also, how would you suggest I use the roasted nori seaweed? In smoothies? Because by itself it does not taste good.

    A:

    No! Not fresh water seaweed. But seaweed sold in a health food store. One in a bottle. Try Dulse, Kelp, Spiriulina, or even Dherbs Iodine Phosphate formula.

    Q: What's the best way to start on a vegan/raw food diet? I am not sure what to eat to make sure I would get a nutritious diet-you may not be able to go into that much detail but how can I get sample meal plans for breakfast, lunch and dinner incorporating this type of diet-perhaps there is somewhere on the web I find something like this?     If I do say myself, the best way to start a raw food diet is to be coached by me. I run a 6 month health coaching program that is 60-90 percent raw and 100 percent vegan/gluten free/ allergy free. You can find out more about my program at www.theveganeffect.com.     Here are some other tips to get started.

    1: Join a raw food meetup group or community. Surround yourself with supportive people who can point you in the right direction. Try meetup.org or 30bananasaday.com 

    2: Read books like "beauty detox solution" by snyder, "80/10/10" by Dr. Graham., or "The Paradigm diet" by Adam Dave

    3: Start simple with breakfast. Always start your day with a green smoothie. read "Green smoothie revolution" by forget authors name at the moment. heh.

    A sample meal plan would be.

    Breakfast: Green smoothie

    Bridge: raw bar, handful of nuts or seeds, or fruit

    Lunch: Raw wraps made from collard greens. use a base of tahini, hummus, or nut butter. Fill with sprouts and colorful veggies

    Bridge: raw bar, handful nuts or seeds, or fruit

    Dinner: Raw pasta with a large salad

    Snack: Sorbet

    Q: I don't know if you remember or know, but there was a Vegan Couple that had a newborn baby, and the baby had died from what seemed to be a lack a of nutrients because the couple fed the baby a vegan diet. If you remember this, what do you think went wrong.

    A:

    The couple was from Atlanta! What went wrong is that while they were well-intentioned, they were ignorant, ignorant to true nutrition. They fed the baby soy milk, and soy milk does not contain nutrition. They didn't supplement the soy milk with nutrition which they could have done with herbs such as alfalfa, Irish Moss, Iceland Moss, etc.

    Q: First let me just say that I love this site. It has given my goddesses and I true alternative. For some reason during this season we have been experiencing the announance of staph infections. The MD doctors have no clue or not clear in explaining how a person even contracts this infection but I know that it has to be food related. The body is perfect until it is contaminated by the foods we eat. At present I have a painful byte that I know is probably now a staph infection. It has swollen and turned red around the affected are. Is there any product that you have available that can assist me with this? I am two steps away from going to the MD but I know that he will only give me a temporary fix (poison) of which I do not even want in my system. Please advise!! My body is in a bind. I am still in transition from the flesh diet but this has definitely pushed me closer to vegan. Thanks in advance.

    Q: What is the best way for a Vegan to get vit? B 12? What do you think about essential oils? Have you heard of the Young Living brand? I work with a woman who says she has eczema, but it is deep purple and very painful. I have never seen anything like it, but her doctors want to try chemo to get rid of it. Doctors are so brilliant. Why do so many people go to get punished by them?

    Q: I've been a vegan for 2 years now. I've done the FBD 3 times in these two years, but my urine is still yellow. The only time it is clear is immediately after I drink water (reverse osmosis water). If I miss a day of drinking water, my urine goes back to being dark yellow. Does this mean that my body is still very toxic? Also, is it normal to release urine 5 to 15 minutes after drinking liquids? I would think that water would need to stay in the body for awhile for proper hydration and cleansing.

    A:

    From what you wrote I would suggest you start drinking alkaline water (purchase an alkaline water machine, you can find various brands in our e-book "Alternative Diet and Lifestyle Manual"). If you are urinating within 10-15 minutes of drinking water you are not absorbing the water, and thus you require micro-clustered water which an alkaline (and ionizing) water machine does. I also highly recommend consumption of our Kidneys-Bladder formula (3 capsules per day).

    Q: I'm a raw vegan, and still suffering from acne. I stay away from all sweeteners, except fresh whole fruits. I started to have lots of greens juices these days, and my skin has improved a little bit. What about spices such a cayenne pepper, is it bad for your skin? What about goji berries? I know they are diet fruits, thats why I stay away from them for a while. I even fast for a while. I just don't know how my skin can getter better.

    Q: I've been eating vegan (mostly raw) for nearly 2 years. In the first year, I lost about 60 pounds. I still have about 50 more to lose and it hasn't budged in almost a year. I hear conflicting info about what sort of exercise would be best - cardio vs. strength. And any time I up my exercise, my hunger gets out of control. Any suggestions?

    A:

    Thanks for the question. The most efficient way to lose weight from working out are high rep/low weight circuit training and through HIIT (high intensity interval training).

    Your goal should be to increase metabolism and fat burning potential throughout the day. Both HIIT and circuit weight training are both effective. To be maximized you should exercise for 1 hour 5-6 times a week. You could alternate between cardio days and circuit training days. Here is an example.

     

    Mon: HIIT

    Tues: Circuit training

    Wed: rest

    Thurs: HIIT

    Fri: Circuit training

    Sat: HIIT

    Sun: Rest

     

    Here is an example of a circuit and  HIIT

     

    Circuit. 15-20 reps 1 minute rest between sets. repeat for 20-30 minutes. (feel free to use the template and build your own)

    Upper: pushups

    Lower: Squats

    Core: Crunches

    Plyo: Burpees

    Upper: Clean and press or curl to press

    Lower: Alternating weighted lunges

    Core: Reverse crunches

    Plyo: Step ups 

     

    HIIT (can be done on almost any cardio machine)

    3 minute warmup

    -30 second sprint 

    -1 minute recovery

    *Repeat for 15 minutes to 30 minutes*

    3 minute cool down

    Top fat loss mistakes for cardio and weight training

    Cardio: Doing 1 speed with no resistance cardio. This kills me. Your fat burning potential begins and ends when you do. If it doesn't challenge you it will not change you. Atleast put the resistance on mountain or random. 

    Weight: Resting too long in between sets. Super sets are key here. Work one set while resting the other. Example of a superset is chest press and seated row together. Quad machine and ham machine. Pullup and shoulder press. 

    When you ramp up your metabolism you are going to have to eat more. Losing weight isn't about calories. Losing weight is about nutrient density.     Q: Hey Gary, I've heard a lot of hype about the paleo diet. I'm a vegan. Is the paleo diet a diet you would recommend? Can it work with vegan lifestyle? Thanks!

    The Paleo diet.... something nice.... something nice.... heh.

    The Paleo diet emphasizes drinking water and eating local/organic food. They shun dairy, processed food, and grains. I agree. 

    I disagree with just about everything else. For paleo theory to be correct Vegans either have to not exist or be doing very poorly. Wrong on both accounts. They say vegans just can't get enough protein or that we are missing x,y,z in our diets. Never mind that every major paleo website sells the supplements they say only vegans are deficient in. "Vegans don't get enough protein so eat meat and then buy our protein powder supplements. Vegans don't get enough omega 3's so just eat fish and while you are at it buy our krill oil supplements." And so on. The paleo diet is just the low carb diet re-branded.     Vegans are doing extremely well and in most long term studies Vegans end up on top in both health and longevity.

    They claim carbohydrates make you fat and that the more you eat the more you weigh. Why then do the 80-10-10 crowd all appear not only all thin but extremely healthy? Carbohydrates are your bodies main source of fuel. Preferred source. Every cell in your body runs on glucose. The human body is amazing. The is a secondary source of energy in case of starvation, or glucose deprived. The body starts to burn fat as fuel known as keytosis. This was only meant as a way to keep the body running during famine. However the paleo people think this is a preferred state to be in. It's not. Look up keto-acidosis. Could be deadly.The bottom line is that people will always be looking forward to the latest fad that tells them "good things about their bad habits".

    My Diet program that I run follows a high carb/low fat/high alkaline/high raw protocol.  All my client reach remarkable health results.

    Q: I have recently made the transformation to becoming a complete vegan. How can I determine what foods are for vegans?

    A:

    Simple question to the self that you can always ask now as a vegan, "Is this product derived from an animal?", and you'll never go wrong as a vegan. Two good questions, to help you make your own decisions as a conscious consumer and vegan: Is it nautral (from the Earth/plant)? Is it from animal? Always ask yourself these 2 questions when in doubt!

    Q: Are vegan burgers with whole grain brown rice a good food combination?

    A:

    There are too many grains in that combination. Consider a veggie side, i.e. salad. We reccomend a vegan, raw foods diet, full of fresh fruits and vegetables in order for you to receive the nutrients you need and detoxify your system.

    Q: I was diagnosed with Raynauds--circulcation in the tips of my fingers. When it is cold my blood vessels constrict causing the tips of my fingers to turn purple and sometimes oftentimes develops painful ulcers. What do you recommend?

    Q: I am not sure if I am looking to go vegan, but I am doing the weight loss cleanse and do feel a difference in my body. My question is how do I keep up eating raw without getting bored? Can you recommend meal replacements and exercises.

    You should absolutely consider going vegan for your long term health, the health of the planet, and of course sparing countless animals from suffering.     With that being said, the best way to keep from getting bored is to eat a variety of fruits and veggies. The main meals of a basic raw food eater is smoothies, soups, collard green wraps, and raw pasta made with zucchini instead of pasta.
