Fall amps my desire to snack on fun. But I want to make sure i have hearty and healthy snacks available. That’s why I was elated when I found the two following fall recipes. Both are unique and look like incredibly tasty, healthy snacks. Each recipe is simple and sweet, and great for snacking on as you bustle through your favorite local store while searching for holiday gifts.

1. Cinnamon and Spice Candied Almonds, or walnuts, or peanuts, via TreeHugger, and Spices of Life

Ingredients

1 tsp virgin olive oil
1 lb raw, skinned almonds, or walnuts, or peanuts
2 egg whites, lightly beaten
1/2 cup sugar
1 1/2 tbsp five-spice powder
1 tsp salt

Method

Preheat your oven to 300°F and lightly grease a cookie sheet with olive oil. Place almonds in a bowl and mix egg whites with almonds (stir to coat). Then, in a paper or plastic bagmix sugar with spices, and salt. Drain almonds in a strainer and drop them into the bag. Shake the bag to coat almonds with spices and salt, and make certain to hold the bag shut!

After the nuts are thoroughly coated, spread the nuts in a single layer on the greased cookie sheet. Roast the nuts, stirring occasionally, for 40 to 45 minutes. Check the nuts 30 minutes in to make sure they aren’t burning.

How to test for “doneness:” Cut an almond in half to make certain its inside is opaque and crisp. Let the nuts cool and then transfer them into a serving dish. Nuts will keep for one week in a tightly covered container.

2. Roasted Edamame with Sea Salt and Cracked Pepper, via the Kitchn

Ingredients

16 ounces frozen shelled edamame
2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly-cracked black pepper
(or 1-2 teaspoons alternate seasoning)

Method

Before baking: Thaw edamame for an hour in a strainer over a bowl to reduce roasting time. Then, preheat your oven to 375°F. Pour edamame in a strainer and run the beans under warm water to melt any ice crystals. Spread edamame on a clean dish towel and pat the beans gently with another dish towel to dry them.

In a mixing bowl: Toss edamame with olive oil, salt and pepper, or other seasonings, if you wish. Taste one of the edamame and add more seasonings if you’d like! Spread edamame in a single layer on a sheet pan and roast the beans for 30 to 40 minutes. (Stir the beans every 10 minutes.) Watch for the edamame to begin puffing and turning golden-brown. The beans’ color will darken and their exteriors will be dry. Remove the pan from the oven and transfer roasted edamame into a serving bowl.

    Q:

    A:

    Hi! Thanks for the question.

Organic non GMO steamed edamame is a super healthy addition to any diet as long as you are not allergic. However please try to refrain from it during your cleanse. The object of a cleanse is to give your body the least amount of work to do so that it has free energy to clean house so to speak. Also being that soy can be an allergen you want to do an elimination diet.

An elimination diet does not have to be during a cleanse. Try removing an allergen such as dairy, gluten, soy, peanuts from your diet for two weeks and then bring it back in. Monitor your body and see how it reacts. If it reacts negatively then you are allergic (allergies increase, joint and muscle pain increase).

Q: I am on my 3rd day of the fully body cleansing. I am definitely doing this to lose weight. I am a 52 year old, black, Christian, wife, mother to 21 and 14 year old girls, legal secretary who is 450 lbs. I am to the point now where if I don't do this I'm going to be housebound. I can barely move some days that is why I started this because I feel so unhealthy. I have a question about the nuts. I got all gun-ho and ordered $135.00 worth of organic nuts from nuts.com. I got raisins, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, walnuts, pecans, pistachios and cashews and mixed them all up together (well I purchased 2 lbs of each but I only mixed up 1 lb of each together). Anyway, I was reading about how much calories are in nuts. Should I not pay attention to that because I was consuming a lot of calories in the first place or do I have to watch how many nuts I eat? I have put some nuts in a sandwich bags and basically filled it up and that is supposed to be my nuts ration for the day. I am also eating fruits and vegetables. So far the fruit have been grapes, grapefruit, red apples, pears, green apples and bananas. The vegetables have all been in a salad: tomatoes, celery spinach leaves, carrots, mixed in balsamic vinaigrette. I only ate the salad Monday night all the other times I have just eaten the fruit and nuts. I am also consuming approximately 75-100 oz of water. Sorry I’m long winded I just wanted you to get the entire picture.

    A:

Thanks for the question, I can definitely help you.

I am currently writing an eBook for www.dherbs.com called "Losing weight the healthy way." I have been a weight loss counselor for many years. I am also a health coach, personal trainer, bodymind nutritionist, and a vegan lifestyle coach.

When it comes to weight loss most programs want you to lose weight to get healthy. My mindset is to get healthy and lose weight.

In my health/fitness/nutrition coaching program www.theveganeffect.com I use a lowfat/high carb/ high raw/ nutrient dense/ high alkaline diet to achieve long term weight loss success. So far I am 100 percent in getting clients long lasting weight loss. If you are interested in my program please fill out the health history form on the side of the web page. We could have a free 1 hour initial consultation over skype to see how I can best help you.

Nuts are best kept to a minimum if you use them at all. Nuts are extremely high in fat and have the opposite omega 3- omega 6 ratio that is optimal for health. Seeds are best as far as ratios are concerned. Also nuts are truly easy to over eat and cause your nutrient ratios to be off.

A healthy vegan diet is a high raw fruitarian diet.

    Example:

Breakfast: green smoothie. (500-1000 calories of fruits blended with a handful of greens and water)

Bridge: Dates and strawberries (500 calories)

Lunch: Salad with low sugar fruits (cucumber, tomato, squash, bell peppers) topped with fruit, beans, psuedo grains,

    Bridge: 2-3 apples

Dinner: Raw wraps (collard greens) with low sugar fruit and tahini

    Snack: Sorbet

    Hope this helps

Q: I just began the cleanse. My concern is that I am not getting enough protein. I have been eating nuts, and I will not eat uncooked beans or peas. What can I do to get more protein while I am on this 20 day regiment?

A: Great question. There is protein in a lot of the vegetables that we eat. Think about it like this, elephants are vegetarians, and they are some of the biggest/strongest animals around. Eat plenty of leafy green vegetables (kale, spinach, etc.), goji berries, nuts, broccoli, avocados, beets, cauliflower, and asparagus.

Q: Is sea salt and warm water a good natural laxative? If so how often do you recommend the use of sea salt for elimination? I was reading The Master Cleanser by Stanley Burroughs and it gives this recommendation, along with drinking lemon water mixed with organic syrup and cayenne pepper. Is it safe to give myself an enema 2xs per day using a hot water bottle filled with fresh squeezed organic lemon and distilled water? Asking this because Bzod had me to listen to 88.3 today here in Cincinnati and the guy (Mike) was telling how he does this regularly and has great results.

    A:

Yes, sea salt in water is a mild laxative!

You can do it as often as you FEEL the need to drink or take it.

You can also consume the Master Cleanse (cayenne, maple syrup, lemon juice) if you choose. You can drink this as much as you like depending on how you feel.

And yes, you can perform enemas 2X a day! Enemas are very helpful for health!

Q: I am in my 30's and my hair is salt and pepper. How do you feel about hair coloring? Are there any particular brands that are safe? (My hair is naturally black).

A: Instead of coloring, try our Gray-Less Hair Formula and our Hair & Scalp Oil. These products can help restore color, growth, and volume to your hair.

Q: I see also that you recommend a complete diet with these programs. I am guessing its a vegan diet right? I wanted to ask something on that is coconut milk and coconut oils ok for that? I personally had a very hard time trying to eat that many vegetables and many ph balance vegans seem to think fruits aren?t good either. I eat that many vegetables one it tears me up the next day and two I just cant consume enough calories that way. I can try and make up for it by eating things like almonds but I eat to many almonds I get the same problem the next day. Now coconut milk (unsweetened) and a digestive enzyme works for me for picking up extra calories.... but I hear very conflicting information about coconut and its saturated fat content. Is it ok to use daily as a part of the diet for cleansing? And your oxy-drops are those the same as the drop for ph balancing water?? Or is it something different? I am wanting to start lifting weights as I need to put on some muscle and I?m wondering if its something that would be beneficial in combating muscle soreness by increased oxygen in the body.

    A:

The diet we recommend is vegan-based, and RAW FOODS. Fresh fruits, vegetables, raw nuts and seeds are ideal.

Coconut Milk and Coconut Oil are excellent products to have in your diet. The healthy fats will keep you fuller.

Oxy-Drops can help balance your electrolytes that need to be replenished after a workout in order to keep your body performing efficiently.

Q: Can I lightly sauté in Olive oil or steam my raw vegetables occasionally on the Full Body Cleanse? This is my second day on the cleanse and I am having a hard time eating crunchy vegetables.

    A:

Hi, and thanks for the question.

It is best to avoid oil for the cleanse and future dieting. Oil slows down digestion, reduces blood flow up to 30 percent for 3 hours after digestion, and is essentially a ton of calories with little to no nutrient value. When you sauté vegetables in olive or other oil you are turning a low calories highly nutritious food into a high calorie and low nutrient dense food.

Steaming is an ok option if done lightly. When you steam vegetables you do reduce nutrient value and destroy some enzymes. If you do you will lessen the impact of the cleanse to a degree but I would rather you eat the vegetable than not at all. The benefit of eating the vegetable lightly steamed is better than avoiding the vegetable.

Q: Dear herbalist, I would like to know if it's alright for me to alternate cod liver oil pill (omega 3) in between taking the blood and lymph cleanse. I use to have beautiful skin until spring of this year. Also I want to know if taking teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil is good for healing me of what I believe may be vitiligo, tenea vesicle or eczema (dermatitis). PLEASE HELP.

    A:

Cod liver oil is crap! Olive oil is healthy and good for you. To repair the skin, focus on cleansing your blood (FULL BODY DETOX, vegetable juice, etc.). Check out our new article "SKIN DISORDER = BLOOD DISORDER".

Q: I AM EXPECTING MY DETOX PACKAGE TO COME IN POSSIBLY ON TUESDAY. I WANT TO START REPLENSHING MY DRY FRUITS. 1. ALMONDS 2. PECANS. 3. RAW CASHEWS. I HARDLY EAT PEANUTS AND I KNOW THEY ARE NOT RECOMMENDED AT ALL. DO YOU RECOMMEND WALNUTS? MY FAVORITE ARE ABOVE. PLUS SHOULD I GET DISTILLED WATER? ALSO BEFORE DISCOVERING DHERBS, I PUT In A WHOLE WATER FILTRATON SYSTEM IN MY HOUSE AND I BELIEVE IT IS CONSIDERED PURIFIED WATER. IS THIS GOOD OR SHOULD I BUY BOTTLED DISTILLED WATER. I AM VERY ANXIOUS TO START DETOXING BECAUSE THIS IS THE FIRST TIME.

    A:

Walnuts are good to eat during the Full Body Cleanse. Distilled water is the best water during the Full Body Cleanse, but your filtered water would also be okay to drink during the cleanse.

Q: I am currently undergoing testing for sarcoidosis and found your site. I am already mostly vegan, but I read in your article that complex carbs should be greatly reduced or eliminated. I was just wondering what that might include, rice, and oats? Should I be eating only fruits, veggies, beans and nuts?

    A:

That would include rice (only eat a little brown or wild rice), potatoes, yams, etc. Yes, eat more fruits, vegetables, nuts, etc.

Q: I am currently on the Full Body Detox. It's my 4th or 5th time & I love the results each time. My question is: I was told that it is okay to eat black beans while on the Full Body Detox, but only black beans. Although I love black beans, & would love to be able to eat them while detoxing, I wouldn't want to interfere with the detox or defeat the purpose. I look forward to you response. It sounds too good to be true...but if it is, why only black beans?

    A:

You are misinformed on the black beans or any beans for that matter, Beloved. Beans should be avoided during the Full Body Detox unless eaten SPROUTED. Sprouted beans are the only exception because they are not cooked!

Q: I have completed the Pancreas Cleanse, and I'm finishing up the Full Body Detox, I'm very disappointed! Reason being, I thought I would have dropped a lot of the extra weight, and I didn't. I did all raw foods, and started preparing raw snacks, made with nuts and dried fruits. In fact, I think I was eating too many raw nuts. I'm still working to help my body heal from the diabetes, but not sure where to go from here. I still want to lose 35 lbs, and I will continue to eat raw at least 85% to 90%, but I need help with supplements. Where do I go from here? By the way is their any reason why, I lost more weight on the Pancreas Cleanse, instead of the Full Body Detox?

    A:

Too many raw nuts could cause a feeling of being bloated, but nuts are pretty good to eat while detoxing. Most people don't have a problem with nuts, while cleansing. Okay, so you have diabetes and the weight is from the diabetes association, correct? It is ideal to first perform the Full Body Detox, followed by the Pancreas Cleanse. If you don't release the full 35 pounds of weight with these 2 kits, you then perform either the 10-Day Supreme Colon Cleanse, or the Weight Release Cleanse. Also, whether cleansing or not, drink 2 cups of Pancreas Tea daily. If the weight (waste), is due to the diabetes then your body responded to the contents of the Pancreas Cleanse (because your body needed it), and this is a sign that you should only be performing the Pancreas Cleanse, and not the other cleanses I named above.

Q: Thanks for the great web site! MY question is what's the best way to get sodium. I thought un-refined sea salt was the best, but the salt article says "eat this salt only if you must." The great thing about pure sea salt is that it all or almost all the minerals the body needs! So what's the best way to get all the mineral and to stay in balance? Also is there a way to get Epsom salt that is sodium sulfate not magnesium sulfate? Is it a good idea to bath in the "good" Epsom salt.

    A:

    You're welcome, Beloved!

The best way to get sodium is via vegetables (i.e. celery).

Sea salt is great source of sodium, but its a secondary source as it has to be processed from ocean water. Absent the process, it would not be available.

But it does provide minute amounts of trace elements.

In re Epsom salt, I haven't been able to find the sodium one.

I stopped using Epsom salt many years ago.

You could bath in the good Epsom salt, but sea salt is far better and more natural.

Q: I was wondering if it is okay to mix Mrs. Dash season blend with Olive Oil as a dressing for my salad? It tastes real bad with just Olive Oil alone, and I don't like the bitterness taste of lemon juice, and apple vinegar cider. Plus, what would you recommend for toppings to make the salad more interesting? Can I put olives, and cucumbers, etc.?

    A:

Do as you please as far as dressing goes! Just stay away from harmful ingredients! Mrs. Dash, seasonings, Olive Oil,

Q: Thank you for always answering my questions. I have about two more. Okay, I'm currently living overseas where I'm limited on raw fresh foods (vegetables and fruits). I want to do the detox but I'm concerned that I won't have everything as far as raw food to be successful. I have access to basics (apples, oranges, bananas, tomatoes, avocados, melons, lettuce, cabbage, bean spouts, carrots, celery, peppers, green beans, peas, bagged nuts,) but nothing exotic by any means. Then I was told to safely eat some of the food in the local economy that we should wash it with a 5% bleach solution (is that safe...and if on the detox I'm thinking that would be a no go). Two questions?Given the mentioned availability of raw foods could I be able to successfully complete the detox (I don't have an issue with eating the same things over and over again) and two what can I do to clean local produce so that its safe for consumption? Apparently part of the issue is that they use human feces to fertilize. Thank you for your time and I look forward to your response

    A:

Yes, it seems you have enough raw food available to you to complete the cleanse.

In order to clean local produce, rinse thoroughly with apple cider vinegar to "disinfect" it. If apple cider vinegar is unavailable, just use water.

Q: I am on day 4 of the FULL BODY DETOX and was wondering what else can or should I eat besides toss salad and fruits and veggies. I know I can do organic non-salt nuts, steamed veggies, fruits smoothies and wild rice but is they’re anything I am not suppose to eat besides meat and sweets (sodas)? I have eaten toss salad was it ok that I put cheese on it? I am struggling to find other food options. Please help!!

Q: I had surgery to drain a cyst on my right ovary, while in surgery the doctor hit my bowels, and they had to call in a surgeon to repair my bowels. I am on this low fiber diet now, and not able to eat raw foods. This means nothing in the green family like lettuce, or greens since they are hard to digest. This list includes no nuts, or fresh fruits with skin. How can I can complete a cleanse, if I am not able to eat the raw vegetables and nuts?

    A:

Simply perform your cleanse of choice and just eat as best you can, okay?

Q: Dasani water, if I remember correctly, was banned from the U.K. It contains salt as well as potassium chloride. Essentia contains calcium chloride, as well as sodium bicarbonate, magnesium sulfate, dipotassium phosphate. Are all the ingredients in Essentia safe? One would have do an independent test on the water. Dasani is crap and I no longer drink Essentia but it would be my brand of choice of bottled water if I was to purchase water again.

    A:

Personally I have an alkaline-antioxidant water machine (Neptune brand) that produces alkaline, antioxidant, oxygenate, mineralized water that is made in Asia.

Q: I would like to know if what I'm doing is okay. This is way before we found dherbs site and the products on the internet. We read on the internet that drinking a teaspoon of natural black sea salt or any sea salt in 32oz warm water every morning is good for bowel movement. We have been doing it for awhile now. Is it too much to take it with your products? I lost some weight after my FULL BODY DETOX but not too much on my stomach. What do you recommend l should use to get rid of the tummy area? I bought FIBROID BUSTER TEA I am I drinking it because l feel there is Fibroids down there. Should l also continue taking my BUNNY RABBIT formula with Fibroid tea? In my last email l mentioned my husband had mild stroke. Now he's having spasms all over his body especially when he's sleeping at night. Why is he having it and what else can he use for that? We are using all these wonderful products on the inside and still have un-even skin. Is it okay to use AMBI products for more youthful skin then detox every four months? If not, when are we going to see your skin products on the market?

    A:

We don't recommend the drinking of sea salt. For tummy reduction: exercise (perform abs, sit ups) and take BOWEL MOVER and WEIGHT RELEASE FORMULA. You can take your herbs and tea together. No big deal! Spasms? Clearly the â€HEALING CRISIS†(read the article by this same title). The skin will improve in time. Don't focus on it!

Q: For the last 2 weeks, I've been eating only raw foods. My daily intake mainly consist of snow beans, green beans (string beans), kale, carrots, a small amount butter and crackers, bananas, apples, pears, lettuce, tomatoes, dates, spinach and filtered water. My question is: Am I getting the required nutrients and how would I know if I were not and specifically, how would I know what nutrient was missing. I also take the MALE HORMONAL FORMULA and JACKRABBIT FORMULA (regardless of whether I intend to engage in sexual activity).

    A:

OF COURSE! WHAT TO KNOW FOR SURE? GO GET A MINERAL TEST DONE. FIND SOMEONE IN YOUR TOWN WHO DOES NUTRITIONAL TESTING OR LIVE BLOOD CELL MICROSCOPY.
