How A Holistic Nutritionist Keeps Her Skin Vibrant & Healthy

Tea rose flowers on plate on wooden table

Since you are what you eat, the food you nourish yourself with is just as — if not more — important than the products you layer on your skin. For a healthy dose of inner and outer beauty, we asked holistic nutritionist Kristin Dahl to share her routine for keeping her skin glowing, happy, and healthy.

Vibrant beauty is a reflection of inner health and wellness. When our body is in alignment, with plenty of water, supportive health practices, exercise, and lots of self-love and compassion, we radiate from the inside out.

As a holistic nutritionist, my approach to beauty honors mind, body, and spirit. All of these components play a huge role in looking my best every day and creating that outer glow. I nourish my body with the highest quality foods and pure nutrients and move energy through my body daily with active movement like hiking and yoga.

I nourish my mind by nurturing the deeper layers of myself, honoring my demons, and connecting to my truth. I nourish my spirit by spending time in nature and finding ways to express myself creatively. I also surround myself with beautiful things, Zen environments and supportive relationships.

Check out my daily routine for creating inner and outer harmony.

I drink two 8-ounce glasses of water upon rising. I start my day off hydrated to support digestion, keep my skin glowing, and lubricate every cell in my body.

Around 7:30, I shower and anoint my body with Jiva Apoha oils (my favorite is the Atman), then sip green tea, matcha (both loaded with antioxidants), or Holy basil tea if I need a caffeine break and want to support my adrenals and regulate my blood sugar.

Most days, I drink a superfood smoothie with Sun Potion’s Chlorella because it’s full of alkalinity and oxygen.

Then I wash and moisturize my face with Nucifera’s The Balm, my go-to all-in-one. Next, I massage my face with Kari Gran’s Essential Serum and spritz with a few pumps of Rosewater + Glycerin spray from Heritage Store.

I apply Suntegrity’s “5 in 1” Natural Moisturizing Face Sunscreen daily and then RMS “un” cover-up if needed.

By 8:30, I’m headed out on a long hike or to a yoga class with plenty of water in tow. My afternoons and evenings are generally filled with work and clients, so I always exercise in the morning.

Exercise oxygenates the body and alkalizes the system. It also boosts feel-good hormones like serotonin and keeps me looking and feeling my best all day long!

I eat a balanced and beautiful lunch. (You are what you eat, right?)

On days when I’m super busy with work and clients, I plan ahead and make lunch in the morning or the night before. Generally, this consists of a superfood salad loaded with veggies, sprouts, greens, ferments, nuts and seeds, and sometimes animal protein or hard-boiled eggs. During colder months, I add in a soup or broth.

I always make sure to get plenty of protein throughout the day, drink tons of water, and keep a handful of almonds with me at all times. This keeps my blood sugar stable and metabolism high, which creates that inner harmony I mentioned before.

Lately I’ve been into more earthy, warming tonics with cocoa, medicinal mushrooms, and a bit of homemade almond milk, but this Rose Tonic from Free + Native is also a huge part of my routine, especially when my body wants something light, gentle, and beautifying.

Around 6 or 7 p.m., I cook a balanced dinner of protein, lots of greens, veggies, and a yummy sauce. I’m super into bowls, and the standard Japanese macrobiotic bowl is my ultimate favorite, I’m constantly noshing on variations of this.

After dinner, I relax with my love and we catch up on the day’s affairs. We often stretch together and do some gentle breath work and aromatherapy. Breath = alkalinity = oxygen = beautiful glow!

10 p.m.: Bedtime

This is generally when I start my bedtime routine, which includes my face cleansing ritual from earlier in the day (minus the sunscreen) and sometimes an Epsom salt bath with lavender.

I like to read, write a gratitude list, and for even deeper, restorative sleep, listen to hypnotherapy before bed. Our cells regenerate in the night, so sleep plays a huge role in my beauty routine. I try to clock at least eight hours a night for a full regenerating sleep cycle.

Other things I like to throw into the mix when I have extra time include infrared sauna sessions, time in the steam room, acupuncture, massage, and random dance parties at home!

Q: When I use the OZ OIL my outer skin is very soft and subtle. However deep down in the skin I feel very itchy. I have been assuming this is the effect of the oil doing its job. After a few weeks I got the feeling that I should try to loofa off the top layers of skin so the under skin could rejuvenate its self. I suppose I am writing because I want to check to make sure that the deep itching truly is a positive healing process before I purchase another bottle. Also to prompt you for any other ideas you might have to help my condition. It is purely beauty based btw I don't have any skin illness.

    A:

The itching is a natural side effect that a healing crisis is taking place. Keep using the Oxy Oil at your discretion.

Q: I am a 49 yr. old black female. When I was younger I had severe cystic acne that left me with what the dermatologist calls "ice pick scaring" and enlarged pores. I had 2 full face dermabrasions in my 30s and have been on retina A from then up until now. I have a pretty healthy diet and exercise routine. My Father and a couple of Uncles of mine also had the same type of skin problems, left with the same aftermath. I use French green clay masks which slightly reduce the look of the large pores and a sugar, honey, and lemon scrub (I make it at home) and I use it on my face. I'm not unattractive, but my skin looks rough and dull and pitted on my cheeks and nose. All the doctors talk about scar revision (cutting),laser treatments, chemical peels, and all sorts of invasive surgeries. I don't want to go that route again and I feel bad about the way I look sometimes. Are there ANY suggestions that you can give that will help me?

    A:

SKIN PROBLEMS ARE UNDERLYING BLOOD PROBLEMS. CLEANSE YOUR BLOOD, GIVE YOUR BODY NUTRITION. STEAM YOUR FACE. KEEP CLAYING YOUR FACE. IMPROVE UPON YOUR DIET GO ALL RAW FOODS OR VEGAN DIET). A GOOD ARTICLE TO READ IS â€SKIN RASH†ON OUR SITE UNDER ARTICLES.

Q: Today makes day 9 of my FULL BODY DETOX (FBD). This morning I have an outbreak on my hand. I have been practicing telling myself I am Healing, but my job is stressful and yesterday I had a stressful day and this morning the outbreak on my right hand. Could this be part of my healing process? Can you suggest what I can do to alleviate the stress at work so this will not block my healing process of herpes? I am following the diet; however I have been kind of burnt out at times on the salads so I at least eat a salad and a bowl of steamed brown rice and frozen green peas that are steamed for 3 min. Is that considered following the diet? I still eat my fruit for breakfast daily, my salad for lunch and steamed broccoli (5min) and for dinner another salad, but for a few days I have eaten the rice and steam green peas. I basically want to know is it alright so if I eat it in the future.

    A:

You have to learn to deal with your stress and stop reacting to it. Your subconscious mind is greatly blocked and therefore you have to realize your healing will come very slow. At a deep level you still believe herpes is incurable and your body is giving you this (despite the healing crisis of outbreaks on the hand). Your dietary deviation is understandable and not that bad but if you are tiring of salads opt for other things to eat. We list a few raw foods alternative recipes in our "ALTERNATIVE DIET AND LIFESTYLES MANUAL" e-book available for download. Check it out!

Q: I love to drink water, but I like to drink hot water you know boiling water slightly cooled. Is there a benefit, or disadvantage to this compared to drinking room temperature water? Secondly, the water I drink is boiled water. Alkaline water is not a privilege most Kenyans have. If 56% of the population is living below poverty line you do the math. So the water I drink is tap water, that I boil to make it safe for drinking. When I get to work I have Alkaline water as my work place provides me with that provision. I think this is detailed enough for you to get the picture and help. Once again (I love you) in Swahili for spreading the gospel!

    A:

No difference at all, Beloved! Even the boiled water becomes room temperature water. You're doing fine! Thank you for your words as well! Much appreciated! Peace and Love!

Q: I am very interested in Dherbs herbal formulas - they appear to be high quality, good formulas. I have a question for you. I eat a vegan diet, about 50% raw foods (sometimes more), get regular exercise, and love to spend time in nature. I am a generally healthy person who rarely gets sick. I have healed myself from asthma and allergies and other ailments by living a healthy lifestyle and using herbs and energy work. However, I do still suffer from cramping during my period (probably endometriosis) and from cervical dysphasia due to HPV. I would love to get these cleared up, too! What do you recommend in terms of your herbal formulas? For example, should I do the whole body detox first, then start in with the ailment specific recommendations, or start everything all at once? Any advice you could give me would be greatly appreciate.

    A:

We would recommend that you first start out with the Full Body Cleanse, followed by the Anti-Viral Kit, followed by the Female Cleanse. These should help you to clear up those unwanted reproductive ailments and provide essential nutrients for female health.

After this series of cleansing, we also recommend the the following supplements in order to to stay on the path towards whole body wellness.

    Menstrual Cycle Formula
    Female Hormonal Formula
    Female Health Tea
    Anti-Viral Formula

Q: I would like to know if what I'm doing is okay. This is way before we found dherbs site and the products on the internet. We read on the internet that drinking a teaspoon of natural black sea salt or any sea salt in 32oz warm water every morning is good for bowel movement. We have been doing it for awhile now. Is it too much to take it with your products? I lost some weight after my FULL BODY DETOX but not too much on my stomach. What do you recommend l should use to get rid of the tummy area? I bought FIBROID BUSTER TEA I am I drinking it because l feel there is Fibroids down there. Should l also continue taking my BUNNY RABBIT formula with Fibroid tea? In my last email l mentioned my husband had mild stroke. Now he's having spasms all over his body especially when he's sleeping at night. Why is he having it and what else can he use for that? We are using all these wonderful products on the inside and still have un-even skin. Is it okay to use AMBI products for more youthful skin then detox every four months? If not, when are we going to see your skin products on the market?

    A:

We don't recommend the drinking of sea salt. For tummy reduction: exercise (perform abs, sit ups) and take BOWEL MOVER and WEIGHT RELEASE FORMULA. You can take your herbs and tea together. No big deal! Spasms? Clearly the â€HEALING CRISIS†(read the article by this same title). The skin will improve in time. Don't focus on it!

Q: A friend told me about your site. I began to read about your Full Body Cleanse. I must admit that initially I was very skeptical about the information given to me, especially since I had never heard of your company, but as I read the articles listed on your site I was so amazed and enlightened. A few years ago I was diagnosed with hypertension and just last year with hypothyroid. I've had irregular menstrual cycles during my entire life. For the past two years my menstrual cycle has really been out of whack, it would come on for a few days go off a day and began menstruating again.... this has been for two years. I have had no real intimacy with a man because I was always afraid that my menstrual would start. About a month ago I thought I was having a stroke which was diagnosed by the neurologist as Bell's Palsy. I am 29 years of age soon to be 30 and all of these things have been going on with me. I have tried pharmaceuticals, which I am still on. When my doctor diagnosed me with hypothyroid he figured that the thyroid medication (levothyroxine) would eventually regulate my menstrual. I have been on this same medication for nine months and still no relief. I was once on one hypertension medication (hydrochlorathiazide) but now have to take another one along with this one because it was not regulating my blood pressure(enalapril). I hate medicine and I am tired of being on all of these drugs that I know are no good for my body. Along with those health problems I am an obese woman, of course my doctor says that this could be from my hypothyroid disease so does this mean I will never be able to get down to a healthy weight? I get so frustrated with things because I try to stay on top of my health and it seems like every time I go into see my doctor there is something new. Since the thyroid medication did not regulate my cycle he is now having me checked for polycystic ovarian syndrome. I don't want to risk my ability to have children by allowing these doctor's to do procedures on my body that will make me barren if that is the case. I am also having problems with acne and skin dryness in some areas of my face. My past doctor told me to use Neutrogena Acne Wash daily and the Neutrogena Facial Lotion that goes along with it. I have been doing this for several years so where is the relief? So I reluctantly began to read your articles and was awed, amazed, shocked, baffled. I am very interested in hearing your opinion about these issues that I am faced with and what you would recommend me do. I thank you in advance for taking the time out of your day to respond to this lengthy e-mail.

    A:

You are too young to be dealing with so many health issues. These are all issues that can be eradicated with a proper diet, consisting of fresh fruits and vegetables and eliminating processed junk food and animal products completely.
You should start with the Full Body Cleanse followed by The Female Cleanse. The Female Cleanse will help regulate your menses. You should then perform the 10 Day Colon Cleanser.

Take the following when you are done with your cleanses: For Thyroid: Take Thyroid Aid and Iron Formula for Hypertension: Take the Cardiovascular and Circulation Aid Formula. For Acne: Take the Blood and Lymphatic Formula and use our Oxy Oil after every face wash.

Q: I'm in my last two days of the full body detox and my skin is just glowing outside of the two huge cystic acne pimples that popped up around day 6. They have not made any signs of going down, despite the facial steaming, Bentonite clay, peroxide, etc. Any suggestions?

    A:

You should perform 1. FULL BODY DETOX. 2. TOTAL WOMAN CLEANSE. Drink FEMALE HEALTH TEA daily. Also, use FEMALE BREAST OIL as well. SUGGESTION: Be patient and don't focus on the pimple. You are creating a block to your healing!

Q: I am a fair-skinned African American and I was wondering what are your recommendations for skin care? I don’t wear makeup or anything; I am just interested in finding a cleansing, moisturizing regimen for daily use. All the products I have seen are SO expensive and or full of toxins. I don’t have any skin problems such as acne. I noticed you have several soaps but I was unsure as to which are best for my face. Finally, is there really a need to wear sunscreen? Is there such a thing as "safe" sunscreen?

    A:

SOUNDS LIKE YOU MAY BE INTERESTED IN OUR ALTERNATIVE DIET AND LIFESTYLES MANUAL MANUAL E-BOOK WHICH HAS A LISTING OF HEALTHY/ALTERNATIVE PRODUCTS INCLUDING SKIN CARE PRODUCTS. IT'S AVAILABLE FROM THE ON-LINE STORE ($10). THE NUBAIN HERITAGE SOAPS WE SELL ARE GOOD BUT I ACTUALLY RECOMMEND KISS MY FACE BRANDS FOR SKIN CARE PURPOSES. THERE IS REALLY NO NEED TO WEAR SUNSCREEN. SUNSCREEN IS PROMOTED BECAUSE IT WAS INVENTED AND SO IT MUST SELL, SO A THEORY THAT THE SUN WAS DAMAGING TO THE SKIN WAS CREATED AND SUNSCREEN BEGAN TO SELL.

Q: I would like to know if that was you on the Al Sharpton show, Monday morning. The show is called “keeping it realâ€. My second question is, do you have any products that would help melasma. So many black women and men suffer with this [facial] hyperpigmentation. The only product that I know that really helps is hydroquinone that many women use today to lighten [bleach] their skin tones. I do not want to use it for that purpose; I have a beautiful skin tone. I just need to lighten the pigmentation that has changed my complexion. The darken colorations make me look older than what I am. I see a lot us blacks with this problem. It is unfortunate that the only product that seems to alleviate the problem is not safe. By the way, I do use sunscreen, only on my face; I allow the rest of my skin to get some sun for its great vitamin D benefits. Thanks

THIS IS VERY EASY! Simply cleanse and purify the body: raw foods (fruits and vegetables), vegetable juice, distilled water, enemas, etc. All economical things!

Q: I'm a 21 year old male suffering from testicular disorder and from partial impotence (Takes longer than 5 minutes without porn to get hard and no morning erections). Here are my questions. 1. How long would it take for the Male Hormonal Formula (which I just purchased a few days ago) before I notice any results? Just curious. 2. Can take the three daily pills all at once, one before each meal (breakfast, lunch dinner), or what? 3. How much water should I drink with this and can other drinks like tea and juice act as a substitute for just plain water?

    A:

How fast you see results with the Male Hormonal Formula all depends on how much your body needs to cleanse before it returns to optimal function!

You can take all 3 capsules at once.

You can drink water or substitute water with herbal tea or fresh juice.

Q: This question is in regard to my 1 yr. old daughter. This morning she grabbed a boiling hot cup of water down from the kitchen table and now has a 2nd degree burn on her chest. She has a big open wound where the skin came off on her chest. I do not vaccinate my child and the nurses were trying to urge me to give her a tetanus shot which I refused. They mentioned it was a vaccine which was for pertussis as well which I did not really understand. So my question is, what would u recommend I give her to keep infection away? I am taking her to a burn center tomorrow for them to check it and show me how to and how often to dress it. I plan to put silver water on the bandage to help the healing process as well. I plan to do a detox for her soon since they gave her morphine for pain and also she has had a lot of mucus and congestion lately due to her teething. Thank you in advance and thank u for this BEAUTIFUL website I am so blessed to have come across your products, I plan to promote them within my business I have already been directing my clients here (I'm a natural stylist).

    A:

Make sure you put aloe vera gel on the damaged skin of the child daily. Aloe is very calming and healing. To prevent infection, rub shea butter on the skin daily. Shea is very good for skin healing. Calendula gel (from a health food store) is also very therapeutic. The OZ OIL from Dherbs would be the best healing agent due to the oxygen in it. Alternate between the above oil, gel, and butter. Don't worry too much about the situation. Focus on healing and moving forward. The child will be alright! Peace, Love and Healing!

Q: My question is what could be causing my puffy eyes? I've had them for probably 6 or 8 months now (maybe more). They sometimes will have a little darkness added to them. Sometimes I wake up and whatever side I've been laying on, that eye will be even more swollen than the other side, but they are usually the puffiest when I first wake up. Sometimes it looks like I've been bopped in the eye in my sleep. I've cut out a lot of the processed foods and stay away from sugars for the most part. I drink only water and juice once a day (5 carrots, 1 green apple, 1" ginger root, handful of parsley and 1/2 beet with greens. I get plenty of rest (although I've always had a hard time feeling rested) but not sure if the eyes have anything to do with rest. It seems more like it has to do with something else internally. What advice can you give and what supplements would you recommend. I'm currently taking your Multi-Vitamins and Minerals formula along with your VITAMIN B COMPLEX (which I love them both). Have been on them for about 1 1/2 weeks now I guess. I also take your CANDIDA BUSTER and the COLON FORMULA (I was having a problem with constipation for the past couple months, did some of your recommended enemas but for some reason my body still seems to get stopped up easily lately).

Q: I have been anemic since my cycle started age 11. In the year 2001 I had the first tranfusion and found out that I had fibroids. At that time they were small. It took three years later to find out that you can shrink them and disolve them from a book called healing fibroids a natural cure. I have always been a heavy bleeder but in 2004 the bleeding got worse where i had to leave work to go to the emergency room. I got IV fliud and was told this is my normal period. I never had to go to the hospital because of bleeding too much. Any way in 2001 I was on the pill and taking iron 3* a day 325ml. Got off the pill because of the weight gain and was still bleeding hard due to everyday stress. 2006 I had two more transfusions with in 5 months of each other. All the doctors want to do is cut me. I refuse. After the last transfusion, I decided to get iron through IV. What a dissaster. The hospital gave me too many things at once. I was fine when I got home but, at 11pm I could not sleep too well. I began having heart palpitations. Rushed to the ER in such pain, I was in pain to stand up, in pain to sit down. I had to pace the floor and sit down and get back up again several times. The intense pain did not stop until I stood bent over my mother's lap for 10 mins. It stopped at 4:30am. Well they kept me for four days. Every test and xray done on me and they found nothing wrong with my heart. Good. But what on earth caused the pain. I have not been able to work for the past 3 years. Every time my cycle starts I lose a lot of blood, I am weak, I can't walk like a normal person and my heart is always pounding hard at every little movement I make. I blacked out in the shower in 2007. I am currently taking cold pressed wheat germ oil to put oxygen in my blood and to stop the pain in my chest. I look worn, my skin from head to toe is covered in scars, and I have no finger nails and my hair is greying all over. I am 36 and I am literally half dead. Can any of your products help me get me up off the couch and walking like a normal person again.

    A:

Beloved, I recommend that you first perform the FULL BODY DETOX. After this kit, I recommend that you perform the FIBRIOD BUSTER CLEANSE AND REGIME. After this kit I recommend that you perform the 10-DAY SUPREME COLON CLEANSE. After this kit, I recommend that you perform the TOTAL WOMAN CLEANSE followed by the WEIGHT RELEASE CLEANSE AND REGIMEN. While performing all these cleanses above, when drinking water make sure you add KHEMETIAN GOLD and OXY-DROPS to every glass of water you drink. In addition to performing these kits, please read our FREE articles and begin to properly educate yourself. There is healing from all that you suffer from!

Q: I'm doing the Full Body Cleanse and I have a few questions about it: I get tired of drinking just the distilled water and I'd like to drink the herbal teas, but I don't like it by itself. Would it mess things up to add a pack or two of Splenda to my tea or maybe honey? I can't stand the salads with the olive oil or apple cider vinegar or the lemon juice as dressing and it makes me gag. I have To have some sort of salad dressing. What kind would be suitable? Do I look for sugar-free? Or organic and natural? I found one that is organic and natural, but it has 3 grams of sugar in it. Without eating all my whole grained breads and other fiber, I haven't had much of a bowel movement in 3 days, should I wait a while yet? (I had surgery on my bowels and always had to take fiber tablets and eat lots of grains to get my bowels to move.) I haven't done the enemas yet, (low on money) should I try that? Or should I resume my fiber tablets I normally take? Any type of fiber I could add to my fruit smoothies in the morning? I want to also do the female cleanse. Is it ok to do that immediately after I finish the full body cleanse or should I wait for a little while? Thank you for all your help, I feel much better than I did before and I just started this detox a week ago, lost 10 pounds, too, woohoooooo! Thank you

    A:

    1. Instead of splenda, use agave, stevia, or grade b maple syrup as a sweetener.

    2. In re Salad Dressing, an organic and natural one is great. You can also check our website for salad dressing recipes.

    3. The fiber pills are not part of the cleanse, so we wouldn't advise those. Fruit is you best choice of fiber so look into eating more papaya, mango, figs, etc. And yes, colonics (and enemas) would greatly help you - undoubtedly!

    4. You can do the Female Cleanse right after you finish detoxing. There's no need to wait!

Q: I see also that you recommend a complete diet with these programs. I am guessing its a vegan diet right? I wanted to ask something on that is coconut milk and coconut oils ok for that? I personally had a very hard time trying to eat that many vegetables and many ph balance vegans seem to think fruits aren?t good either. I eat that many vegetables one it tears me up the next day and two I just cant consume enough calories that way. I can try and make up for it by eating things like almonds but I eat to many almonds I get the same problem the next day. Now coconut milk (unsweetened) and a digestive enzyme works for me for picking up extra calories.... but I hear very conflicting information about coconut and its saturated fat content. Is it ok to use daily as a part of the diet for cleansing? And your oxy-drops are those the same as the drop for ph balancing water?? Or is it something different? I am wanting to start lifting weights as I need to put on some muscle and I?m wondering if its something that would be beneficial in combating muscle soreness by increased oxygen in the body.

    A:

The diet we recommend is vegan-based, and RAW FOODS. Fresh fruits, vegetables, raw nuts and seeds are ideal.

Coconut Milk and Coconut Oil are excellent products to have in your diet. The healthy fats will keep you fuller.

Oxy-Drops can help balance your electrolytes that need to be replenished after a workout in order to keep your body performing efficiently.

Q: I think this way is easier and faster to have your response. I currently have many skin problems. I first started having body rash and eczema around my lips. When the skin gets dry, it hurts, and I've been trying to moisturize the skin with using all natural Burt's Bees andor Hugo natural lotion, cream or oil. I tried sea salt soak and been taking Sen-Fen, Blood formula, Immune support, Anti-Viral, but it's not working and the symptoms haven't gotten better at all. My entire body is really itchy from rash, so I haven't been able to sleep well for the past 2-3 weeks. If you have any suggestions for life style, special drinks and foods or products I can use, please let me know asap.

    A:

Greetings! You skin problems are explained in the article "SKIN DISORDER = BLOOD DISORDER" which I suggest you read. (visit articles section). When there's no physical healing, check the mind. Check out the NEW MENTAL SCIENCE MANUAL and there is a chapter in there on using the mind to heal. Basically you are focusing too much on the problem and not the solution which is optimal health and well-being. You are telling yourself how you don't want these problems and by saying this subconsciously, you are keeping the problems. Have your permanently switched or changed your diet? If not, what are you waiting for? Your blood is begging to be purified. Herbs alone won't get the job done. Let go of worrying about the problem. Focus on enjoying life, getting back in balance and you will begin to heal!
