How To Clean A Mattress

Cleaning your mattress will eliminate dead skin cells and mites, of course, but it might also improve the quality of your sleep.

If you’re like me, you have never contemplated the need to clean your mattress. But as it turns out, once you know the facts, the cleanliness (or lack thereof) of your mattress can be hard to ignore.

According to Ohio State University, a used mattress can have anywhere from 100,000 to 10 million dust mites inside. That’s because mites feed off of dead skin cells, which our mattresses are full of since we spend so much time in bed. And what’s really irritating to our skin and lungs is not the mites themselves, but the fecal matter. Yuck.

So what can you do about this not-so-little problem? Change your sheets often (once a week if you can, once every other week for sure) and clean your mattress regularly. “I don’t think people give a lot of thought and energy into proper mattress care,” Dr. Sharon Horesh Bergquist, assistant professor in the department of medicine at Emory University, told CNN in 2010. “It really can improve not only the quality of people’s sleep but also reduce their chances of having mites and infestations of bedbugs.”

Sounds easier said than done, right? I mean, you can’t exactly just stick your mattress in the washing machine. Never fear! MNN to the rescue. Here are four easy steps to follow to clean your mattress:
  1. First, take off your sheets and wash them in the hottest water possible. This will help to kill any mites living on your sheets.
  2. Next, while the load is running, generously sprinkle baking soda all over your mattress (I use a sieve for this purpose but you can just shake it on straight from the box). If you’d like, you can even add a few drops of lavender essential oil to the mix to help with any funky smell that may be emanating from your mattress.
  3. Then, let it sit there for at least an hour; a few hours if you have the time.
  4. Vacuum up the baking soda with the hose attachment from your household vacuum cleaner. Do this part slowly, since lingering over each part of your mattress with the hose will allow it to suction up as much dust from inside the mattress as possible.

For a deeper clean, you can also steam clean your mattress. Steam cleaning works great to help get out old stains and will also help deodorize your mattress. Just be sure to let your mattress dry fully (three or four hours should do the trick) before putting your sheets and blankets back on the bed.

Do you have a mattress pad on your bed? This will also go a long way towards keeping your mattress clean. Don’t forget to wash it once a month as well.

By the way, your pillows can harbor dust mites also, particularly if you sweat a lot at night. Be sure to wash your pillows regularly and change them out for new ones every two years.

Remember, you spend one-third of your life in your bed, so its important to keep it as clean as you would any other surface in your home if not more so. Be sure to clean your mattress regularly and then you can rest easy (literally)!

Q: I went on a business trip to a not so clean hotel and came back with these mites. I tried to treat them with a common cream (I cannot think of the name right now). It worked but I did not realize then that you were supposed to use a follow up application a week later. They are back, and now seem to be immune to it. I?ve read about neem and karanja oils, and I have tried them, but I am not sure I am doing it right. Any suggestions?

    A:

Bathe in hot water, 2-3 boxes of sea salt, 7 drops of tea tree oil, 3 drops of Eucalyptus oil, and half a cup of hydrogen peroxide daily.

You can also perform our Parasite & Worm Cleanse to detoxify your body from harmful invaders.

Q: I was cleaning my place yesterday and shortly after, I noticed small itchy red bumps all over my body mainly arms, shoulders, back. After doing some research, I came to the conclusion that it might be dust mites (I have a long-haired cat that sheds a lot). What can I do to treat the bumps (I don't want any scaring) Is there an alternative to soaking in a tub (I'm renting a condo and I don't feel that soaking in someone else's tub is sanitary). Also, how can I prevent them?

    A:

BY ALL MEANS - DETOXIFY YOUR BODY! PERFORM THE FULL BODY DETOX AND USE A GOOD SALVE OR OIL (I.E. OZ OIL) EXTERNALLY. AND "NO" YOU DON'T HAVE TO PERFORM THE SOAK. YOU PREVENT DUST MITES BY GOOD HOME CLEANING (ALMOST DAILY), USING CERTAIN PRODUCTS (VISIT GAIA.COM FOR PRODUCTS), AND AIR FILTERING (PREFERABLY OZONE).

Q: Hey wassup Dherbs.com, I got a question about when people try to say they clean the meat with vinegar and citruses before they cook it. What does "cleaning" the meat have to do with the pesticides, worms, and other harmful things added to the meat? I read from your articles that the worms have a shell that forms in very high temperatures so it doesn't kill them.

    A:

You can't clean meat, Beloved. Period! Folks are doing something just to be doing something! All meat is corrupted and toxic! Period!

Q: I recently purchased the Children's Cleanse (Liquid) to clean out my 6 month old baby boy. The problem is, every time the mucus comes up he quickly swallows it back down. What do you suggest I do?

    A:

The mucus the child swallows back down will leave the body via the stools. When the child is older, he/she will learn to spit the mucus out. The body knows how to eliminate what is not wanted in the body.

Q: Yeah it does seem like it would be a lot of pills to take to do a Full Body Cleanse one time...plus the longer term would probably be more effective I would think. I think I have just one more question here and that would be about the Anti-viral kit and the Parasite & Worm Cleanse. As I read they go hand in hand the Anti-viral Kit cleans up blood and Parasite & Worm Cleanse cleans up organs and tissues if I read it right and remember it correctly. My question is which would be first?? My guess would be clean up the blood first since that is constantly pumping around nasties if it?s already full of poisons. The body can only move so much out at one time and if the blood is full of poisons it would be hard for your body to get the poisons out of the organs and transport it out of the body. I?m no doctor but it seems to me the blood is what transports stuff around the body....so am i right to think that the viral blood should be the first to clean up? Then parasites in the organs and tissues...and then move onto cleaning up the acidic deposits thru our the body. ...maybe I should be asking what you would do first? Do you ship ups or fedex?

    A:

Yes, aim for the blood first. But know this, all of our kits are going to cleanse the blood and work on the organs. Some are just more geared toward certain organs and systems, that's all.

Personally, we would recommend to aim for the parasites and worms, to facilitate future healing with another kit. Regardless of the kit, healing is going to take place.

Call Dherbs directly to inquire about shipping with Fed-Ex or UPS. Normal Dherbs shipping is via U.S. Postal Service.

Q: I want to know if you have an herb that helps with leg swelling, edema. I had the entire test, I'm not a cancer patient, and I don't have high blood pressure or any known problems for the swelling, other than inheritance. I am doing lymph drainage therapy right now, and yes the swelling will go down some but it comes right back. Do you have herbs to clean the liver and colon? I get colonics every month; I eat organic most of the time and get foot detox baths. Also I work out at least 4 to 6 days a week for no less than 30 min or as long as an hour.

    A:

YES, PERFORM THE FULL BODY DETOX AND TRY DRINKING CORNSILK HERBAL TEA AND/OR JUNIPER BERRY HERBAL TEA DURING THE DETOX AND AFTER.

Q: After reading some other natural material, it was stated that you should clean your colon before detoxing you body, because the blood feeds from the colon. Would that be a better way?

    A:

Detoxing actually cleanses the colon. They are one in the same. When you detox or cleanse the body, you detox or cleanse the colon. When you cleanse or detox the colon, you cleanse or detox the body.

Q: My two year-old son is not circumcised and his foreskin is not pulling back is there anything I can do to get his skin to stretch without getting him circumcised because I really don't want to do that. And are there any bath remedies to keeping it clean, right now I give him sea salt baths and thinking about using hydrogen peroxide. Also, It keeps getting red and swollen I gave him antibiotics because it hurts when he urinates. If you could, could you possibly recommend something I could get from a health food store I can't afford to cleanse his body right now.

    A:

Don't act too fast; sometimes it takes a while before the skin begins to become elastic. The child is only 2. You can clean his foreskin with warm water, sea salt, and tea tree oil (5-8 drops in the bowl of water or bath water) and you can add 1 ounce of hydrogen peroxide if you like. If the skin is red and swollen it's inflamed. Start applying Dherbs.Com HEALING SKIN OIL and this should facilitate healing. Antibiotics are harming the child. He doesn't need antibiotics! Please read our article on "DANGERS OF ANTI-BIOTICS". He'll be alright!

Q: Thank you for always answering my questions. I have about two more. Okay, I'm currently living overseas where I'm limited on raw fresh foods (vegetables and fruits). I want to do the detox but I'm concerned that I won't have everything as far as raw food to be successful. I have access to basics (apples, oranges, bananas, tomatoes, avocados, melons, lettuce, cabbage, bean spouts, carrots, celery, peppers, green beans, peas, bagged nuts,) but nothing exotic by any means. Then I was told to safely eat some of the food in the local economy that we should wash it with a 5% bleach solution (is that safe...and if on the detox I'm thinking that would be a no go). Two questions?Given the mentioned availability of raw foods could I be able to successfully complete the detox (I don't have an issue with eating the same things over and over again) and two what can I do to clean local produce so that its safe for consumption? Apparently part of the issue is that they use human feces to fertilize. Thank you for your time and I look forward to your response

    A:

Yes, it seems you have enough raw food available to you to complete the cleanse.

In order to clean local produce, rinse thoroughly with apple cider vinegar to "disinfect" it. If apple cider vinegar is unavailable, just use water.

Q: I am 18 years old and was diagnosed with genital herpes in March 2007. Four months before that till present I have been suffering with a vaginal odor problem. No matter how I shower and clean, after a half an hour my vagina would have this fishy like odor that you could smell through my clothes. When I am on my menstrual the smell is even stronger and embarrassing because no matter what I do I cannot hide the odor. Before my first breakout with herpes I went to the doctor about the smell and my pap smear didn't show any signs of an infection to explain the smell. After being diagnosed with genital herpes I went back to the doctors to find out what I could do about the embarrassing odor. I was even tested for bacterial vagenosis but did not have it. The doctor said the smell could just be symptoms of a break out coming on. They gave me acyclovir pills and sent me home. Not to mention the pills did not help one bit with my breakouts or odor. I don’t know what to do anymore.... I’m tired of locking myself in the house because of my odor and my painful breakouts. Please help....

    A:

BELOVED, HAVE YOU READ OUR "GENITAL HERPES" ARTICLE YET? IF NOT, YOU SHOULD. I BELIEVE IT WILL OPEN YOUR EYES. DRUGS WILL NEVER HELP YOU! NEVER! THE BODY CANNOT ASSIMILATE THEM. I'D RECOMMEND THAT YOU PERFORM THE FULL BODY DETOX FOLLOWED BY THE ANTI-VIRAL CLEANSE AND REGIMEN. PERFORM THESE TWO FOR STARTERS. BASICALLY, YOU HAVE TO PREPARE FOR A FULL LIFE CHANGE.

Q: I took and followed the Anti-viral cleansing kit and my test for herpes said that I had it. So I called and spoke with someone with Dherb's and I was told that I might have to redo this as many as 3x but on Dherbs I have read a lot about other kits and this and I just would like to know what kits in what order for how long should I do to get a clean test. I understand that every one is different but before I go back to get another test I would do all that I can do to change this. Please help lead me on the right path.

    A:

     First, perform the Full Body Cleanse for 20 days. Perform the salt baths, drink vegetable juice daily (especially CILANTRO) as recommended in the Full Body Cleanse Companion manual;

After the DETOX, jump on the Anti-Viral Cleanse. Only wait less than a week to start it. Do the same things you did while detoxing, i.e. (salt baths, vege juice, etc.).

Then go get tested a day after you finish this cleansing. Schedule your doctor visit the 22nd day after you start the Anti-Viral Cleanse. This should help you achieve the best results possible.
