How To Make Homemade Candles

Love to give homemade gifts for the holidays? Besides baked goods and jams, candles are one of the most thoughtful DIY gifts you can create. But many environmentally conscious people have ditched candles to avoid indoor air pollution. After all, traditional candles are made from paraffin, which is a byproduct of petroleum. Traditional candles also give off benzene and toluene, noxious chemicals that vegetable-based candles don’t emit. So if you focus your efforts on soy candles or beeswax candles, you’ll avoid that hazard.
 
Here’s how to get started:
 
Prep time: 30 minutes  
Total time: 2 hours  
Yield: 1 candle
 
Homemade candles
Ingredients
  • 2 cups soy or beeswax wax flakes, available at craft supply stores
  • 1 wick long enough to fit your container
  • 5-10 drops essential oil for a nice holiday fragrance (peppermint, ginger, nutmeg, vanilla, frankincense)
  • 1 glass jar, vintage tea cup, mason jar, shot glass or other pretty glass jar or vessel
  • 1 glass bowl
  • 1 saucepan
  • 1 candy thermometer
  • 1 clothespin
  • 1 pair scissors
  • 1 wooden spoon
Cooking directions
  1. Melt the wax flakes in a glass bowl in the microwave for one minute at a time until melted, or use the glass bowl over a saucepan of water, creating a double boiler. Heat on medium until melted thoroughly.
  2. Once the wax is smooth and registers about 120 degrees Fahrenheit on the candy thermometer, add 5-10 drops of the essential oil (about one ounce) and stir.
  3. Place the wick inside the glass jar, teacup or vessel and spoon a few tablespoons of wax onto the bottom of the container. Place the wick into the container all the way into the wax, making sure the wick is long enough to hang over the container rim. Hold the wick in place until the wax hardens; it should only take a few minutes. When it has hardened, pinch the top end of the wick with the clothespin, pull it taught and lay it across the top of the container, keeping the wick centered and straight.
  4. Stir the wax in the bowl making sure it’s smooth and pour it slowly into the container being careful not to spill. Be careful because the wax is hot. Fill all the way up to about one-quarter inch from the top, making sure the wick extends past the wax.
  5. Let the wax harden overnight. Then trim the wick to desired length. Voila! You have a beautiful soy candle. Try different fragrances, use interesting vessels and give all those on your gift list a homemade, environmentally friendly present.
 
Candles make excellent hostess gifts or small tokens for people like your hairstylist, child’s teacher, neighbor or others you want to remember over the holidays.

    Q: Hello, I've been following the cleanse as it says in the book. My baby now refuses to drink from my breasts I’m so upset. He's been crying constantly for two days. I've been ill and vomiting constantly for the same amount of time. This is no coincidence. Today I've only drank water as the thought of anything else makes me feel ill.     Q: Thank you for the cancer info...It is welcome and beyond informative, however, I take issue with your remark that "women would be wise to just accept the fact that they are female by nature and God made them to have (deliver) babies and they should stop trying to compete with and be like men." Part of me is not surprised--men make comments like this all the time.     Q: My question is about hair loss. I am a 45 year old African American female. I started losing my hair about 15 years ago. I specifically remember unusual symptoms before it started to fall out. First, my entire scalp had a burning sensation, and it was very tender to the touch. It was very difficult to brush, comb and wash. Then after that, I am not sure how much longer after, but a dry patch of skin developed toward the back of my head (approximately 1 inch in diameter). I was able to peel it off and pull it through the strains of hair (very weird).     Q: My daughter is now 6 years old and at the age of 1 was diagnosed with asthma. She was on albuterol and predisone for 4 years off and on and only taking the medicine when her asthma flared up. While she was on this medicine I noticed that she had lack of an appetite. I started giving her organic milk and keeping her tightly clothed in the winter and by the time she was 4.5 years I got it under control that she didn't have an attack for a year.     Let the child perform the Children's Detox. Give her pear juice, plum juice, and prune juice periodically. The child sounds constipated. If the stomach is bloated and growing, clearly the child is backed up. Feed the child more fruits and vegetables (as they are loaded with enzymes which help with bowel movements).

    The asthma can be knocked out with the herbs Mullein leaf, Eucalyptus, Lobelia, and Wild Cherry Bark. Give them to the child in tea form. Alternate the teas, switching them up, making sure she drinks all of them. Mullein leaf by far is the best. Asthma is nothing but a mucus condition. Rub essential oil of Eucalyptus on the child's chest before bedtime. First rub on some olive oil, and then apply the essential oil of Eucalyptus.     Q: I have a 17 years old daughter that is taking the brain toner for her epileptic seizures for about a month now. I wanted to know how long with the effects take place to allow sufficient oxygen to her brain, and will the seizures eventually cease?     Q: I have had bacterial vaginosis for about 2 years now. My symptoms are not bad, as I only feel a little bit of itching and burning every now and then. But I do have a lot of discharge, which generally actually does not smell foul. The reason is gardnerella.     Q: Hi, I have been suffering from a dull pain the testicular area for over 2 years now. I have seen 2 urologists that have confirmed that I have enterococcus bacteria in either the prostate of genital area based on semen culture. I have also done testicle ultrasound and CAT scan of the area with good results. One of the urologist said that I have an inflamed prostate (prostitis) there was some varicose veins when ultra sound was done but the urologist continues to give me long term antibiotics.
