Is Your Job Hurting Your Sleep?

0-244534529-mansleeping

For many of us, our work gives shape to our daily lives. Most of us must work to support ourselves, our households and our families. It’s not uncommon to spend more waking time on the job or otherwise engaged with work than any other aspect of our lives. Given the scope of the role that work plays in our lives, we don’t pay nearly enough attention to the impact of our jobs on our health — and in particular, our sleep.

It’s true that some jobs and industries pose greater challenges to sleep. Rotating schedules, overnight or early morning hours, extensive travel, high-stress and high-pressure responsibilities — these and other on-the-job realities can undermine healthy sleep routines, and bring about chronic health problems, especially as we age.

This slideshow does a good job of highlighting some of the professions and industries that are closely associated with sleep problems — as well as some that might surprise you. Air traffic controllers and pilots, medical residents and truck drivers — these are some of the jobs that garner at least some attention (if not enough) for the hazards they pose to sleep. But what about the financial analyst who is up before dawn communicating with a colleague on the other side of the world? Or the restaurant worker whose work isn’t finished until well beyond the 1 a.m. last call? These and many other jobs come with sleep risks that fly under the radar, often going unnoticed and unaddressed.

Depending on its schedules and demands, different jobs will pose different challenges to regular, restful, sufficient sleep. Here are a few of the most common work-related sleep problems:

Shift work. Shift work can pose serious problems for sleep. Working changing or rotating schedules makes it difficult to establish a consistent sleep routine. Getting up and going to bed at different times of the day isn’t just inconvenient — this lack of routine can cause disruptions to the body’s circadian rhythms, the 24-hour biological “clock” that regulates sleep-wake cycles. Shift workers are at higher risk for sleep disorders including insomniaand obstructive sleep apnea. Research shows that shift workers are at greater risk foraccidents and injury, as well as for chronic diseases associated with poor sleep, includingheart disease and stroke. Who works shifts? In today’s world, more and more people work something other than the traditional routine Monday-to-Friday daytime schedule. Doctors, nurses and other medical professionals, as well as airline and airport personnel and manufacturing workers are some of the professions that traditionally involve shift work. But in our globally-connected 24/7 society, people in fields like technical support and customer service are often working irregular and evening shifts. People who have to travel frequently for work and contend with jet lag can also experience similar sleep problems to shift workers. Many of our public health and safety professionals work shifts, including police and firefighters. This makes sleep problems associated with shift work a public health issue of its own, as we all have a vested interest in addressing sleep issues in these fields.

Long hours. Sometimes it’s not a changing schedule that interferes with sleep, but theduration of work that poses hazards to sleep and health. Studies show that working long hours is associated with several sleep problems, including shortened sleep times, difficulty falling asleep and daytime impairment. A recent study of nurses found that those working overtime and long hours were more likely to report poor sleep than those with less grueling schedules. These same nurses were also more likely to be overweight or obese and to exercise less and were more likely to engage in unhealthy behaviors, such as smoking. A great many jobs fall into the “long hours” category, including many supervisory and management positions. The connection between long hours and sleep problems may not be as recognized as that of shift work, but the impact is very real and deserves more study and attention.

High stress.
Stress and worry are enemies to sleep. And a high-stress, high-pressure job can make it difficult to leave work concerns at the office. Research shows that worry has its greatest effect on sleep during the ages 35 to 55 — right smack in the middle of most career trajectories. (Of course, it’s also the time when people are also often raising families.) Jobs that from the outside may seem downright cushy — high-paying, high-prestige positions in industries such as business and finance, science and engineering and information technology — often come with non-stop pressure and responsibility that can undermine health and sleep. Positions such as these demand long hours. Many of these demanding high-pressure jobs are ones that people never really leave, where the separation between work life and non-work life is tenuous at best. Research is beginning to explore the toll that high-intensity work has on health and sleep. Recent studies have shown significantly elevated rates of insomnia among software engineers (compared to the general population), and among Wall Street investment bankers, who are contending with insomnia and depression.

Often we’re so busy managing our daily lives that we stop paying attention to what’s right in front of us. If you’re having trouble building and maintaining a healthy sleep routine, taking a closer look at how your job affects your sleep may help lead you to more effective strategies for getting the rest you need.

Q: Hey Gary here are my challenge I'm 43 been trying to lose weight, I start on a program and stop once I don't see any results. I tried the Detox I think I lost about 5 pounds, I work at night and have a part time jobs seeing private patients in the day so my sleep pattern is little maybe I get 4 hrs of sleep I'm having problems getting this weight off. I also want to mention when I do exercise my joints swell so I try to keep it low impact. I also have sweet tooth so I get these cravings here and there more so when I'm at work at night. Hopefully you can help me. Thanks....Lakeisha

    A:

    Hi, thanks for the question.

Lets go through one thing at a time. Your overall schedule and lifestyle is not healthy and will likely sabotage your health goals. Receiving so little sleep will prevent major weight loss because your body cannot cleanse and cannot recharge. You must repay your energy debt before you can properly lose weight. Your body is always in a state of playing catch-up to the workload you are giving it. It stores fat because it doesn't have the
energy to properly function. I understand crazy schedules but they will not get you the results you desire. I would focus on trying to find a more balanced or healthier schedule before adding the stress of losing weight to an already overworked body.

Your body has been come toxic and inflamed from a toxic lifestyle. A high carb-high raw vegan diet will help ease your suffering the most. A high carb (fruit based) diet will help replenish your energy stores and reduce
nutritional stress. To learn more about how a healthy vegan diet can help you reach your goals please consider the following eBooks found at Dherbs.com.

"Go Vegan the Healthy way" or
    "Lose weight the healthy way"

As far as your mindset is concerned an all or nothing approach rarely breeds success. Especially when it come to regaining health or losing weight. It takes time and patience. I would recommend checking out the DVD
"fat sick and nearly dead". It's a fascinating look at how you can quickly go from a health zero to a health hero in the shortest time. Every single person on the planet has a sweet tooth. Those who say they don't usually are hopped up on caffiene or other drugs and pharmaceuticals. Every cell in the body runs on glucose. The brain eats up a small apple and a half worth of glucose every hour. Eating a high carb-lower fat diet will give you an energy abundance, reduce overall stress, and help you lose weight.

    Hope this helps,

Q: I was informed my two year old son has sleep apnea, and requires surgery. During his sleep, he stops breathing for several seconds. This worries me! What herbs can he take so he can have a normal sleep?

    A:

Herbs can only assist! They are not the solution! I would recommend that he doesn't sleep on a pillow. He needs a bed that allows his body to slant, so his head will be lower than his feet. This way, oxygen can rush to his brain. My sleep article is being finished and may be up near the end of April. Please stay tuned to Dherbs.com! Make sure you get a guarantee that surgery will solve the problem. Surgery is always a big risk.

Q: I gave my daughter 1 capsule of BRAIN TUNER every morning for about two weeks now. She now has a mild to average seizure every day instead of twice or three times a week. And since taken this Brain Tuner two weeks ago she has had two bad attacked. Normally she will get a bad attack every 2 - 3 weeks once. Most of her attack come during her sleep or during an afternoon nap, i.e. she will wake up from this sleep/nap and stay still for 30 sec - 1 minutes and the attack will come and her entire palms and feet will turn cold and heart starting to beat very fast. And once in a while if she does not get enough sleep she will get a hard attack out of the blue during the day otherwise most of the seizure attack during her sleep. Does this Brain Tuner stimulate her brain and causes the attack? What other remedy should I take to cut down this seizure?

    A:

Sounds like the body (brain) is being greatly regulated, but if the BRAIN TUNER is speeding up the attack of seizures, abstain from using it and just give OXY-DROPS in glass or cup or water (20 drops per cup/glass). Normally a thing increases before it decreases but if this causes concern then abstain and try something else.

Q: I am the proud purchaser of your FBC system. My husband will be starting the regiment soon. His occupation requires him to work 6p to 6a, thus he sleeps during the day Fri - Mon. The other 3 days he is on a more "normal" schedule. My concern is around what times he should consume his meals/supplements. As you can see, Breakfast and lunch could pose a problem . I am worried that his meals (Smoothies) will throw off his sleep cycle as well. What times frames should he eat at? Do some {raw} ingredients wake you up more? Please advise.

A: Thank for contacting us.  We're happy to hear that you were satisfied with the Cleanse and recommended your husband to do it.  He can adjust the intake of the capsules according to his personal schedule. If he works overnight and is asleep during the day, he can start the regimen when he is up. He should just be sure that he's consuming the formula's every 2-3 hours as instructed.   There are raw foods that helps naturally provide the body with more energy, but they're not the same as consuming caffeinated beverages that would keep him up.  Most raw foods just have multiple benefits.  The Cleanse also helps improve your sleep.

Q: I have obstructive sleep apnea and I sleep with a CPAP machine. I'm doing the full body detox. On the third night while taking the ACTIVATED CHARCOAL, I woke up in the middle of the night from a dream that my head was full of air and was about to explode. I took the CPAP mask off and I haven't taking the activated charcoal since. I believe my throat collapsed, however the first night using it I slept well. I am now on my fifth day with the FULL BODY DETOX. Do you have any suggestions. Will the lack of the charcoal water formula #7 ruin my detox.

    A:

The ACTIVATED CHARCOALis not causing the problem. You associated it with the problem. But you don't have to take the charcoal.

Q: I have a client that had her thyroid removed, the doctors have her on 3 grains of the natural...well natural for a pig. Thyroid. She couldn't sleep so they put her on ativan. Which is making her crazy (between you and I) She is still not sleeping and feeling agitated and this drug is causing her anxiety. I feel it has built up in her system and she has to dose down off of it. Do you have anything that would help her sleep? I have already suggested your thyroid blend. However, I didn't know if it could really help her as they removed her thyroid. So perhaps she does need the grains, as her body can no longer produce it on her own. I would really like to get her on natural as possible stuff so we can see what is physical and what we can work on energetically. Right now she feels like an energetic mess. Any suggestions?

    A:

I RECOMMEND FOR HER (TO INDUCE SLEEP) OUR NERVES FORMULA (6 CAPSULES BEFORE BEDTIME) AND CALMING INSPIRANT. AND BY ALL MEANS SHE NEEDS A NATURAL THYROID FORMULA (I.E. THYRIOD FORMULA AND IODINE PHOSPHATE. IF SHE FEELS LIKE AN ENERGETIC MESS, SOME SERIOUS CHAKRA BALANCING/ALIGNMENT IS NEEDED.

Q: I am about to start the full body detox and I was wondering if yogurt was something good to eat during the full body detox. I also work a rotating shift which means my shift changes approximately every seven days. Should I continue taking the pills on the same schedule or should I take them on my "wake" hours when I work the midnight shift?

    A:

Yogurt is dairy, Beloved! The diet regimen is clear on dairy products. In re schedule, you have the liberty to take the capsules as you please. So improvise if need be. You have the freedom to do so. Just take your capsules regardless of your shift.

Q: Hello, I have a son that is now 5 years old and the doctors thought he had PDD autism. Through prayer and searching I don't think this is the case. He has trouble focusing, slow development, irritability, tosses and turns during sleep, stops breathing at times during sleep, slow speech development, poor memory, and very poor stool movement (often small little pebbles) God showed me Celiac before but I never had the money to really convert his diet totally, is there something that you have that might help with this for his age?

    A:

Please schedule a consultation, Beloved. A response here won't do justice to the little boy's situation.

Q: I am taking the FULL BODY DETOX. I am working 3rd shift tonight. I am trying to avoid coffee. Please give me a healthy alternative to stay awake. Also is there something herbal I can take to help me calm down to sleep during the day?

    A:

The best way to provide your body with more energy would be to consume foods that have a rich source of energy.  Foods that naturally provide the body with energy include banana, spinach, citrus fruits like grapefruits and oranges, apples, almonds and lemons.  Green Tea and Yerba Mate tea is also a good source of energy.  Camomille or Kava Kava tea can help calm you when you're ready for bed.  If your schedule constantly flucuates, you might be interested in the Energy Formula.
