Land or sea: what’s the best type of omega-3?

A great deal of debate has gone on over whether the ‘best’ omega 3s are to be obtained from plant sources or from fish.

If you are a vegetarian or make supplement choices based on environment issues such as over-fishing and the destruction of the ocean habitat it can sometimes feel as if you are compromising.

However new evidence suggests that increasing the amount of omega-3s in your diet, whether from fish or flax, will likely decrease your risk of getting heart disease.

A substantial amount of evidence exists supporting the heart-health benefits of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid (EPA and DHA), marine-derived omega-3 fatty acids. However, less evidence exists to demonstrate the positive effects of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a plant-based omega-3 fatty acid.

Omega-3 fatty acids are considered essential for human health, but the body does not produce them — therefore they must be consumed in order to maintain appropriate levels.

Depending on the source we can get omega-3s in our diet from several different types of foods.

EPA and DHA can be found in seafood and fish oil, and are often consumed in the form of dietary supplements. ALA is found in flaxseed and its oil, vegetable oils, and some nuts, and is now available in supplement form.

Other sources of ALA, EPA and DHA are fortified foods such as orange juice, eggs, peanut butter, margarine and bread, among others. While there are many other omega-3 fortified foods in the market place, most are relatively low in these healthy essential fatty acids.

The benefits reported for marine EPA and DHA are stronger because supplements of EPA and DHA appeared first and have been under scientific scrutiny for longer. In these early studies EPA and DHA was the only difference between the treatment and control groups

In later studies looking at plant derived omega-3s like ALA there were often diet differences beyond ALA between the treatment and control groups.”

In a recent review of  existing literature on the subject, researchers have come to the conclusion that ALA is likely just as effective in preventing cardiovascular disease as EPA and DHA have proven to be.

The researchers say that dietary recommendations should now be amended to increase the amount of ALA consumed.

Q: I have had bacterial vaginosis for about 2 years now. My symptoms are not bad, as I only feel a little bit of itching and burning every now and then. But I do have a lot of discharge, which generally actually does not smell foul. The reason is gardnerella. I have tried all kinds of treatments from antibiotics, boric acid, homeopathy and magnetism, but nothing has helped so far. I've been a vegetarian for almost ten years now, although I do eat fish from time to time. I avoid breads, dairy products, eggs and seafood. However, I've been really busy lately and in a lot of stress, so I have been paying less attention to what I eat. I do prefer pretty comfortable clothing though. As far as treatment goes, I am not interested in daily baths or douches (have tried this as well based on a homeopath's recommendation) or anything like that, as I simply don't have the time or the conditions for it. I currently live in a Third World Country. What can and should I do? I am thinking more of supplements etc. I hope you can give me some advice

    A:

Please read our BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS article. It is very detailed and tells you everything you need to know and what to do.

Q: I have incorporated fish into my diet because I have been craving. Is moderation okay.... meaning my fruits for breakfast a regular lunch with salad and a salad for dinner okay to pretty much moderate other foods? It is challenging for me to become a vegan. Do you have any suggestions on how to still eat healthy to maintain an alkalized body with certain foods with moderation that are not raw? I still drink my green veggies at least twice a day. I am praying that my results will be negative.

    A:

FISH IN MODERATION IS OKAY FOR YOU. TO MAINTAIN ALKALINITY, DESPITE THE ACID-FORMING THINGS YOU EAT, JUST MAKE SURE TO EAT AS MANY GREEN FOODS AS POSSIBLE. YOU CAN ALSO TAKE 6 CAPSULES OF ELECTRIC GREENS CELL FOOD TOO! YOU’RE DOING GOOD SO KEEP YOUR THOUGHTS POSITIVE AND ON YOUR DESIRES.

Q: Members of my house have started drinking Hemp Milk and Rice Milk. No more Cow Milk! We like the taste of both. I also like the fact that the hemp milk has omega and other nutrients in it. However, my son is three years old and we have discovered he is allergic to nuts because a family member gave him a cashew to eat, then his eyes began to swell up like Garfield the cat. I had him tested for food allergies and the test revealed he is allergic to nuts and soy. So I don't give him any nut products or soy products. My question for you is: "Is hemp a nut or a seed, is the hemp milk derived from a nut or a seed???" I need to know other alternatives if in fact it is a nut. I do not want to give him something toxic to him.

    A:

Hemp is a seed, not a nut, so hemp seed milk is okay for him.

    Nuts cashews - peanuts, soy

    Grains - rice, oats

Fruit - almond, coconut, banana, date

Hey, I'll do an article that will be up on Dherbs early next week!

    Peace and Love!

Q: I'm a personal trainer with a client who suffers from acid reflux. She was taking on teaspoon of apple cider vinegar a day and that was keeping it under control. One of her favorite foods is grapefruit. Her reflux has gotten worse and her doctor has since put her on medication to keep it under control. Is there anything that she can do that is more natural and can place her body back in balance?

    A:

This person needs to consider performing the FULL BODY DETOX and after such detox, do a daily regimen of ELECTRIC GREENS CELL FOOD, ACID BUSTER, ENZYMES FORMULA, and DIGEST AID. For right now, she needs more alkalinity in her system which comes from green foods. Alkalinity counteracts acidity. Have her drink vegetable juice daily.

I really need to work on my diet am vegetarian however, I feel like I truly face some of the same issues you faced during your conversion.. perhaps I need to consider going back to strictly vegan vegetables! I use to be very healthy but now I take meds for stomach pains.. etc... but I have implemented flaxseed oil into my diet .. .what is your view on flaxseed..? I found this article to very interesting that you wrote.. I have headaches from time to time also.

Q: If I may ask, what is it specifically about the baby's diet that is conducive to eczema? We try to give her a normal, healthy, nutritious diet. Exactly which foods are acid-forming so that we may alternate them out of her diet? As for my wife, she has taken several detoxes in the past with no results. She is now expecting and breastfeeding so I don't believe a detox would be the best thing for her at the moment. Are there any other suggestions you can offer us for currently treating these problems?

    A:

The acid-forming foods are eggs, meat, dairy products, and refined grains. Shop for vegan foods. Your wife can drink DETOX TEA and use HEALING SKIN OIL (externally) as well as drink vegetable juice (which greatly cleanses the blood). Please consider a consultation so that all questions may be thoroughly answered and so you all can get on the path of healing together as a family.

Q: Hi D, I began the FULL BODY DETOX this AM - Sun.13th. In the past I have experienced high blood pressure (BP) in about the 130/88-95 range. I have personally chosen not to take prescription meds for this but instead to lower it naturally. I have been taking Ultimate Omega, CoQ-10 (100mg), Magnesium, Super Calcium (1200mg)and Kyolic (6x day). I thought to monitor my BP while on this cleanse. I took my first reading @ 6:50 (164/95) pulse 66. Took second reading @ 9:45 (175/101) p- 66. By taking the herbs will this cause my BP to rise? what might be the cause of this and what recommondations might you be able to share with me. Also, I have not been taking my above pills while cleansing - not sure if I was to or stick strictly to the cleanse.

    A:

Your BP is self-regulating itself so numbers will fluctuate. Don't panic or worry! Trust in your body's natural healing process! With healing it's Ordo Ab Chao: order (stability) out of chaos! And by all means strictly stick to the cleanse! You''ll be fine!

Q: I am interested in starting the Full Body Detox program. At this time, I would like to know which program is best for me. At current, I have started removing things from my diet as of 2 weeks ago (pork, chicken, red meat, I'm trying with the fish but it's hard!) I am not eating cheese but I still eat yogurt and every now and then I will eat a boiled egg (egg whites). I have removed soda from my diet, no coffee, I drink herbal or green tea, pomegranate juice or orange juice and I drink filtered water (I have a countertop filter that I change every 6 months and the Brita pitcher that I change every 2 months). Along with the supplement, is there an eating plan that you can suggest for me? I am eating more fruits and vegetables, but I would welcome suggestions on certain foods that I can eat while I begin my cleansing.

    A:

The Full Body Detox kit comes with a prescribed dietary plan and notifies a person what they can and cannot eat during the detox.

Q: I TRULY LOVE YOUR SITE! I am a health seeker by holistic means and am suffering from Uterine fibroids as well as cysts in my breast. My Naturopathic doctor told me that the fibroids wont totally go away with any and all treatment. However, I believe differently. I know that I will get rid of the fibroids, and I believe that I will also learn how to keep them driven away with the helpful information that I have found on your site. Thank you for also expounding on natural birth control. I have also been doing some research on this topic (being that the synthetic birth control, tampons, sanitary napkins and food microwaved in plasticware has created an estrogen dominance that has fed these insatiable tumors). I will be trying your natural birth control soon, and wanted to ask if you have also heard of another form of natural birth control called, "Neem Oil". It has been widely used in India with a 98% effective rate. I am just wondering what your take is on this?

A: The Fibroid Cleanse & Regimen can greatly benefit you. It is a 20 Day Cleanse and Regimen that naturally works to strengthen and purify the female reproductive system, while helping with the reduction of fibroids.
