Raw Vegan Condiments You Can Make with Fresh Berries

Packed full of vitamins and offering a myriad of antioxidants your body can use to fight off disease, berries make an extraordinary addition to any meal. And studies show that flavonoids called anthocyanidins may help to increase mental sharpness as we age. The vibrant color of berries always makes food more fun too. Eating berries for breakfast and enjoying them as snacks throughout the day aids in weight loss, and makes it easy to keep a healthy BMI in check.

Between all the different types of berries available on the market (and in the wild!), it’s almost impossible to get bored with them. There are tons of ways to use berries in your everyday life – put them in smoothies, bake them in pies, blend them into frozen treats, or turn them into homemade raw vegan condiments! Making condiments is easy to do, and enables you to avoid the long list of ingredients typically found on store-bought products. Here are a few options you’re going to fall in love with:

1. Homemade Jam

Who doesn’t like jam? It’s sweet flavor and sticky texture makes a perfect pairing with everything from toast and oatmeal, to crackers and pies. But if you look at the labels of those jars of fruit jam on your grocery store shelves, you’ll probably find a host of questionable ingredients to contend with. Artificial sweeteners, high-fructose corn syrup, and not so “natural flavors” can usually be found in store-bought jam. And those that aren’t packed with unnecessary fillers tend to be on the pricey side of the spectrum.

Luckily, you can affordably make your own fresh berry jam at home. Freshly made jam is always tastier than the store-bought variety, and it doesn’t take a ton of ingredients or equipment to create it. Here’s what you need:

  • A clean mason jar
  • A blender
  • Fresh berries of your choice
  • Dried fruit of your choice (optional, make for a thicker jam and the opportunity to create various flavors. Try dried mango, coconut, or even dried apples!)
  • Chia seeds

The easiest way to make raw vegan jam is to put a couple cups of fresh berries and about half a cup of dried fruit into your blender. Pulse the fruit until it is mushy then throw about a tablespoon of chia seeds to the blender. Mix the concoction on high until becomes the consistency of jam. Try adding a little lemon juice, orange juice, or coconut water to the mix to thin out the jam and implement different flavor profiles.

2. Fresh Salad Dressing

Berries taste great with greens. Toss a bunch of sliced sweet strawberries and a handful of blueberries with some spinach, and you’ve got yourself a garden of delicious eaten’. A great way to make sure that you get to enjoy your favorite berry flavors every time you take a bite of succulent greens, it to turn your berries into a salad dressing. It’s super easy, and you can make everything from vinaigrettes and creamy dressings, to spicy toppings and sweet drizzles. Check out these options:

  • Basic Berry Vinaigrette – Blend berries, balsamic vinegar, dates, and lemon juice with a clove of garlic and a bit of water.
  • Creamy Berry Ginger Dressing – Blend almonds, berries, a half inch piece of ginger, and a little sweeter with some nut milk.
  • South-of-the-Border Berry Topping – stir diced tomatoes, blueberries, minced garlic, cumin, some lemon juice, and a little salt together in a small bowl.
  • Sweet Berry Drizzle – Let a handful of fresh juicy berries soak in a cup of orange juice, stirring once in awhile, until the berries bleed into the juice and the juice thickens.

All of these tasty temptations are awesome on romaine lettuce, chopped cabbage, and thinly sliced kale. They can be used with a host of other foods too like mushrooms, sweet potatoes, rice, and veggie wraps.

3. Fruit Salsa

Fruit salsa is easy to make with berries. You just puree the fruits like you would tomatoes and can then use any other ingredients you like, whether sweet or savory. To go sweet, choose a little healthy sweetener, some lemon juice, and maybe other sliced fruits like bananas, peaches and pineapple. Herbs like mint and cilantro also make great choices. For a savory option, choose additions such as basil, garlic, onion, peppers, and other spices you might find in regular salsa. You can use whatever berries you like, though strawberries, blueberries and raspberries tend to work the best.

Here are some recipe ideas:

  • Sweet and Spicy Salsa
  • Blueberry Salsa
  • Strawberry Spring Onion Salsa

It’s best to use fresh berries whenever possible, but don’t be afraid to introduce frozen berries when making your berry condiments. To protect the texture of your concoctions, it is a good idea to drain them while they fully thaw before using them. Enjoy these condiments as berry season arrives!

Q: Lunch is organic salad dressing allowed or maybe fresh lemon juice and some extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) (cold pressed)

    A:

Organic salad dressing is a healthy alternative, but because they're bottled they usually contain preservatives to sustain their condition on store shelves. We recommend sticking to raw and fresh ingredients like using extra virgin olive oil as a base for homemade dressings. Adding apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, sea salts and other spices are common ingredients for homemade dressings.

Q: Hello, I'm on day 3 of the FBC and I'm having a really hard time with sweets. It's even more trying because I work in a bakery which I cannot avoid because it is a family owned business and I, myself do a lot of the baking. What do you recommend to help seize my sweet craving besides fruit? Because it seems that I can eat fruit for substitution but after a while I still want to eat cake lol. Also, what brand alkaline water do you recommend? Is it best to drink the bottled water or make it? Thanking you in advance. D.Bolden

A: After a few days, your cravings will subside. If you feel like you need additional help with sugar cravings you can also try the Sugar Control. There are raw food desserts available in health stores like Whole Foods, raw food restaurants or raw desserts you can make. It would be best to purchase the alkaline water. Essentia, Nestle, Voss and Neo Water are some of the popular brands of alkaline water. Sugar Control - http://www.dherbs.com/store/sugar-Formula-p-63.html

Q: I started the full body detox today, and found that I DO NOT like the salad dressing I made with the olive oil, apple cider vinegar and lemon juice. I found I could not tolerate it on my salad. What can I do instead? Another question is... I noticed lentils on the food combining chart. Those have to be cooked. Are those actually allowed to be consumed warm? I love the raw fruits and vegetables. I don?t have a problem, cause I love salads. I just need help on what I can have on it.

    A:

Check out our website for raw salad dressing recipes. You are bound to find one you like.

As for lentils, you are NOT allowed to have them while on the cleanse.

Q: What Are Some Natural Sweet Treats (Junk Foods) I can Consume? Under free will you can consume what you like, but healthier products are best. You will find plenty of "healthier" snack, treat, and junk foods at good health food stores such as Whole Foods Market, PCC Natural Food Stores, Erewhon, Trader Joes, Natural Grocers, New Frontiers, etc. Just make sure to abstain from salt, sugar, and other harmful chemicals in the products you buy. Q: I just completed the Full Body Cleanse about two weeks ago and started the Pancreas Formula for my pancreas... I don?t have the money for the full kit but after the Full Body Cleanse I?ve notice my blood averaging +-200.....it had reached a low of 124 during detox. I bought cromium and have used it since the onset of detox at about 1200 mcg per day! My Pancreas is a piece of crap!!!!! I haven?t had ANY thing with added sugar or artificial, just green tea with stevia to sweeten it. NO Treats! The only regular food I get now is like lean cuisine type once or twice a day with fresh vegetables or fresh made Veg juice....I had went from 327lbs to 289lbs during detox but since I?ve went back up settling at about 296 and stable. I have cut everything I love out of my life! No Sugar, No Milk Products. About 6 ounces of meat A WEEK eat mostly live vegetables yet I see a Pancreas that needs to be punished for ruining my life!!!!! I try to help it and this is what it does for me! I don?t know what to do next.

    A:

If you can't afford the full kit or kits, order and drink some of our Herbal Teas to help maintain the pancreas in its normal healthy secretion. Cinnamon Tea can also provide additional benefits.

We also recommend a daily pancreas regimen of: Pancreas Aid, Pancreas Formula, and Sugar Control.

Your vegetable juice should consist of GREEN BEAN (Snap pea) and/or BRUSSEL SPROUTS, to help maintain pancreatic health.

Q: I'm doing the Full Body Cleanse and I have a few questions about it: I get tired of drinking just the distilled water and I'd like to drink the herbal teas, but I don't like it by itself. Would it mess things up to add a pack or two of Splenda to my tea or maybe honey? I can't stand the salads with the olive oil or apple cider vinegar or the lemon juice as dressing and it makes me gag. I have To have some sort of salad dressing. What kind would be suitable? Do I look for sugar-free? Or organic and natural? I found one that is organic and natural, but it has 3 grams of sugar in it. Without eating all my whole grained breads and other fiber, I haven't had much of a bowel movement in 3 days, should I wait a while yet? (I had surgery on my bowels and always had to take fiber tablets and eat lots of grains to get my bowels to move.) I haven't done the enemas yet, (low on money) should I try that? Or should I resume my fiber tablets I normally take? Any type of fiber I could add to my fruit smoothies in the morning? I want to also do the female cleanse. Is it ok to do that immediately after I finish the full body cleanse or should I wait for a little while? Thank you for all your help, I feel much better than I did before and I just started this detox a week ago, lost 10 pounds, too, woohoooooo! Thank you

    A:

    1. Instead of splenda, use agave, stevia, or grade b maple syrup as a sweetener.

    2. In re Salad Dressing, an organic and natural one is great. You can also check our website for salad dressing recipes.

    3. The fiber pills are not part of the cleanse, so we wouldn't advise those. Fruit is you best choice of fiber so look into eating more papaya, mango, figs, etc. And yes, colonics (and enemas) would greatly help you - undoubtedly!

    4. You can do the Female Cleanse right after you finish detoxing. There's no need to wait!

Q: I am on my 3rd day of the fully body cleansing. I am definitely doing this to lose weight. I am a 52 year old, black, Christian, wife, mother to 21 and 14 year old girls, legal secretary who is 450 lbs. I am to the point now where if I don't do this I'm going to be housebound. I can barely move some days that is why I started this because I feel so unhealthy. I have a question about the nuts. I got all gun-ho and ordered $135.00 worth of organic nuts from nuts.com. I got raisins, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, walnuts, pecans, pistachios and cashews and mixed them all up together (well I purchased 2 lbs of each but I only mixed up 1 lb of each together). Anyway, I was reading about how much calories are in nuts. Should I not pay attention to that because I was consuming a lot of calories in the first place or do I have to watch how many nuts I eat? I have put some nuts in a sandwich bags and basically filled it up and that is supposed to be my nuts ration for the day. I am also eating fruits and vegetables. So far the fruit have been grapes, grapefruit, red apples, pears, green apples and bananas. The vegetables have all been in a salad: tomatoes, celery spinach leaves, carrots, mixed in balsamic vinaigrette. I only ate the salad Monday night all the other times I have just eaten the fruit and nuts. I am also consuming approximately 75-100 oz of water. Sorry I’m long winded I just wanted you to get the entire picture.

    A:

Thanks for the question, I can definitely help you.

I am currently writing an eBook for www.dherbs.com called "Losing weight the healthy way." I have been a weight loss counselor for many years. I am also a health coach, personal trainer, bodymind nutritionist, and a vegan lifestyle coach.

When it comes to weight loss most programs want you to lose weight to get healthy. My mindset is to get healthy and lose weight.

In my health/fitness/nutrition coaching program www.theveganeffect.com I use a lowfat/high carb/ high raw/ nutrient dense/ high alkaline diet to achieve long term weight loss success. So far I am 100 percent in getting clients long lasting weight loss. If you are interested in my program please fill out the health history form on the side of the web page. We could have a free 1 hour initial consultation over skype to see how I can best help you.

Nuts are best kept to a minimum if you use them at all. Nuts are extremely high in fat and have the opposite omega 3- omega 6 ratio that is optimal for health. Seeds are best as far as ratios are concerned. Also nuts are truly easy to over eat and cause your nutrient ratios to be off.

A healthy vegan diet is a high raw fruitarian diet.

    Example:

Breakfast: green smoothie. (500-1000 calories of fruits blended with a handful of greens and water)

Bridge: Dates and strawberries (500 calories)

Lunch: Salad with low sugar fruits (cucumber, tomato, squash, bell peppers) topped with fruit, beans, psuedo grains,

    Bridge: 2-3 apples

Dinner: Raw wraps (collard greens) with low sugar fruit and tahini

    Snack: Sorbet

    Hope this helps

Q: The reason I have chronic constipation is not because of diet, I eat very healthy, it is because of pain medication (narcotics), that I have to take to be able to stand the excruciating pain I am suffering from 5 spinal surgeries (I have metal rods in my spine from my shoulder blades to my tailbone). In order to have a regular bowel movement every day I take Glyco Lax (a dr.'s RX) 2x a day, plus what I call my "concoction" : I Tbs raw honey, 2 tsp. apple cider vinegar, 1 tsp. lemon juice, 1/3 cup fresh ground golden flaxseeds,? 1 tsp. Natural Psyllium Husk Fiber, and put all of that in hot purified water and drink it. I also take a stool softener with stimulant. That is a lot of time consuming work for me, but it does work. You offer several products for regularity, but I don't know which one to order. My Dr. says senna is very harsh and addictive, and your products seems to have a lot of senna in them. I was told it is not good for long term use. Please advise.

    A:

Senna is a 100% all-natural herb that is completely safe. It can be used for bowel movement stimulation, as the body recognizes and assimilates the herb without any side effects. All of our products can provide numerous health benefits.

Q: Thanks for all of the information which is very beneficial I must say. My question to you is what's the best type of aloe vera juice to drink? Also I have heard that the gel from the plant can be mixed into a smoothie, is that true? Greetings! As far as the best brand I really wouldn't know as there are a few good brands on the market. Just make sure your aloe vera juice is at 99% pure and with no additives. Aloe gel can be added to a fruit smoothie though

    A:

I personally wouldn't add it to a fruit smoothie.

Q: I have been drinking nettles tea as well as parsley juice and a tea made of marshmallow, gravel and hydrangea roots to control my potassium levels. I have noticed that my potassium numbers are less controllable now that I do dialysis once or twice a week. I know they give me a “K-bath" and I suspect that it keeps my potassium higher to discourage me from eating fruits and veggies and to make me feel jittery enough to keep going back. Actually the doctor told me not to juice or eat fruits at all. I will be ordering your FULL BODY DETOX this week, However, I want your input on how to control my potassium.

    A:

You control your potassium levels by not worrying about it - eating how God intended you to eat. Beloved, just eat NATURAL food (fruits, vegetables, seed, and nuts) and you'll be all right. P.S. - apples and bananas are good sources of potassium!

I am a witness to it and I thank you for the education. My question... Do you know where I can get quality Acai berry juice and other products? You help with this is greatly appreciated.

    A:

Thank you for that testimony, Beloved! Greatly appreciated. In re Acai Berry, look into Monie Vie (though mixed with other berries). Great product! Health food stores now sell Acai Berry juice (i.e. Knudsen). I purchase mine from Whole Foods Market. Pure 100% Acai Berry may be a little challenging to find though!
