Sweet Potato-Broccoli Soup Recipe

The arrival of cooler weather in the Northern Hemisphere may signal shorter days and fewer outdoor activities, but it also means soup season has arrived!

Sweet potatoes and broccoli combine in this soup to provide a rich, creamy texture to go along with a sweet antioxidant punch. Add an anti-inflammatory boost of turmeric, and you have the perfect soup to warm you up on a cool fall day.

Warming Sweet Potato-Broccoli Soup

Servings: 6

Ingredients:

  • 1 Tbs coconut oil
  • 1 yellow onion, diced
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 large sweet potato, peeled and roughly chopped
  • 5 cups chicken bone broth (or vegetable broth for a vegan version)
  • 1 head broccoli, thinly sliced
  • 2 Tbs lemon juice
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • sea salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1/4 cup pine nuts, toasted
  • olive oil, for serving

Directions:

Preheat a stockpot or Dutch oven on medium heat. Melt the coconut oil, then add the onion and garlic with a pinch of sea salt. Cook, stirring often, until translucent, about 5 minutes.

Add the sweet potato and broth and simmer, covered, stirring occasionally, until sweet potato is almost tender, about 20 minutes.

Add the broccoli, and cook until just tender, about 5 minutes.

Add the soup, lemon juice, turmeric and cinnamon to a high-speed blender and process on high until silky smooth. If the soup is too thick, add a little water to thin it out.

Return the soup to the Dutch oven and warm gently. Add sea salt and black pepper, to taste. Adjust seasonings if need be.

Serve immediately with a drizzle of olive oil and toasted pine nuts as a garnish.

    Q: Is sea salt and warm water a good natural laxative? If so how often do you recommend the use of sea salt for elimination? I was reading The Master Cleanser by Stanley Burroughs and it gives this recommendation, along with drinking lemon water mixed with organic syrup and cayenne pepper. Is it safe to give myself an enema 2xs per day using a hot water bottle filled with fresh squeezed organic lemon and distilled water? Asking this because Bzod had me to listen to 88.3 today here in Cincinnati and the guy (Mike) was telling how he does this regularly and has great results.

    Yes, sea salt in water is a mild laxative!

    You can do it as often as you FEEL the need to drink or take it. 

    You can also consume the Master Cleanse (cayenne, maple syrup, lemon juice) if you choose. You can drink this as much as you like depending on how you feel.

    And yes, you can perform enemas 2X a day! Enemas are very helpful for health!

    Q: In the Full Body Detox booklet it states I can have wild rice if I need something warm. I really don't like wild rice, but can I make myself a vegetable soup which I prefer. To me its more filling then the rice.

    Q: I had a question regarding the chicken pox and other child sickness. I wanted to know what must I give my 8 month old baby if he do get the chicken pox or other sickness.     Q: I am interested in all the lessons you have tabled in the article section of Dherbs. On reading one article, I learned that pepper is a mucus irritant. I am concern because I have about read on some other blog about a doctor that cure cancer using pepper and garlic (credits to KELLY EIDEM). So, I have been eating raw hot pepper and garlic. So sir, I would like to learn if there is any side effects in eating hot pepper as you have mentioned that it's mucus irritant. Thanks. Your reader.

    Eating hot peppers has its benefits but excess consumption may eventually cause harm. It boils down to how often and how much of them you are eating. Organic doesn't make a thing necessarily good to eat. Organic peanut butter is better than regular or inorganic peanut butter but peanut butter is peanut butter and thus hard on the digestive process.

    Q: How often should one eat cook food? I'm a vegan, I do not consume any meat, seafood, milk what so ever. I eat water cresses like everyday so as cook food. Like white rice with black bean sauce, spinach, and pasta at time's I'll eat some Chinese fried rice, veggie roll, steamed vegetables, any advice?

    You can eat cooked food as much as you like. However, try to incorporate as many nutrient-dense raw foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, raw nuts and seeds, into your diet to make sure you are receiving an adequate amount of nutrients.

    A: We have numerous raw salad dressing recipes available on our recipe section. The salad dressing you tried, might be better with apple cider vinegar instead of lemon juice in addition to adding the sea salt and herbs & spices of your choice.

    Q: I recently purchased your Parasite and Worm Kit and wanted to know what grains were good to eat during or after the cleanse. I eat Bulgur, brown rice, black rice, couscous, gold and brown flax seed and ground provisions i.e. yams, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, turnips and etc. Are these ok to eat during the Parasite and Worm Kit or after?     Stay RAW while removing the parasites! If you stay mostly RAW, then on a few days you can engage yourself in some of the foods you mention below (maybe once a week)! But RAW is best! Apple Cider Vinegar is the BEST vinegar to use!

    Q: I've been a vegan for 2 years now. I've done the FBD 3 times in these two years, but my urine is still yellow. The only time it is clear is immediately after I drink water (reverse osmosis water). If I miss a day of drinking water, my urine goes back to being dark yellow. Does this mean that my body is still very toxic? Also, is it normal to release urine 5 to 15 minutes after drinking liquids? I would think that water would need to stay in the body for awhile for proper hydration and cleansing.

    From what you wrote I would suggest you start drinking alkaline water (purchase an alkaline water machine, you can find various brands in our e-book "Alternative Diet and Lifestyle Manual"). If you are urinating within 10-15 minutes of drinking water you are not absorbing the water, and thus you require micro-clustered water which an alkaline (and ionizing) water machine does. I also highly recommend consumption of our Kidneys-Bladder formula (3 capsules per day).

    Q: I am writing you to see if you have any information and remedies for hemorrhoids. I am a Black African male in my 40's. I have changed my diet for the last 3 yrs., no meat, fish, cheese, milk, no dairy, no alcohol, no bread, greatly decreased sugar and salt. I exercise 45 minutes a day, 5 days a week, drink at least 6 glasses of water a day and take lots of vitamin c and a multivitamin but I still have not been able to get rid of the hemorrhoids. Also the hemorrhoids only come out when I have a bowel movement. I have bowel movements twice a day. Also, I have been taking horse chestnut tincture.     Q: I started the full body detox today, and found that I DO NOT like the salad dressing I made with the olive oil, apple cider vinegar and lemon juice. I found I could not tolerate it on my salad. What can I do instead? Another question is... I noticed lentils on the food combining chart. Those have to be cooked.     Q: Hello, I'm on day 3 of the FBC and I'm having a really hard time with sweets.     Q: I am on my 3rd day of the fully body cleansing. I am definitely doing this to lose weight. I am a 52 year old, black, Christian, wife, mother to 21 and 14 year old girls, legal secretary who is 450 lbs. I am to the point now where if I don't do this I'm going to be housebound. I can barely move some days that is why I started this because I feel so unhealthy. I have a question about the nuts. I got all gun-ho and ordered $135.00 worth of organic nuts from nuts.com. I got raisins, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, walnuts, pecans, pistachios and cashews and mixed them all up together (well I purchased 2 lbs of each but I only mixed up 1 lb of each together). Anyway, I was reading about how much calories are in nuts. Should I not pay attention to that because I was consuming a lot of calories in the first place or do I have to watch how many nuts I eat? I have put some nuts in a sandwich bags and basically filled it up and that is supposed to be my nuts ration for the day. I am also eating fruits and vegetables. So far the fruit have been grapes, grapefruit, red apples, pears, green apples and bananas. The vegetables have all been in a salad: tomatoes, celery spinach leaves, carrots, mixed in balsamic vinaigrette. I only ate the salad Monday night all the other times I have just eaten the fruit and nuts. I am also consuming approximately 75-100 oz of water. Sorry I’m long winded I just wanted you to get the entire picture.

    Nuts are best kept to a minimum if you use them at all. Nuts are extremely high in fat and have the opposite omega 3- omega 6 ratio that is optimal for health. Seeds are best as far as ratios are concerned. Also nuts are truly easy to over eat and cause your nutrient ratios to be off.

     

    A healthy vegan diet is a high raw fruitarian diet. 

    Example:

    Breakfast: green smoothie. (500-1000 calories of fruits blended with a handful of greens and water)

    Bridge: Dates and strawberries (500 calories) 

    Lunch: Salad with low sugar fruits (cucumber, tomato, squash, bell peppers) topped with fruit, beans, psuedo grains, 

    Bridge: 2-3 apples

    Dinner: Raw wraps (collard greens) with low sugar fruit and tahini

    Snack: Sorbet
