The Easiest Ways to Achieve White Teeth

Teeth whitening strips were all the rage years ago and are still somewhat pretty popular, along with professional whitening treatments. Something about that big, bright glistening smile just allures us all into wanting one ourselves. Teeth can suffer from discoloration for a variety of reasons, with some of the top causes being smoking and drinking coffee, tea, wine, beer, and soda. Since smoking, excess alcohol, and drinking soda both come with major health risks, first, be sure you try to eliminate those as much as possible; they offer far greater harm than simple whitening strips will. But what should you do if you just have to have that morning cup of coffee/tea, or you’re just looking to whiten your teeth?

While they may seem convenient, we should try to stay away from chemically-based teeth-whitening products as much as possible, including strips that are sold over the counter. These typically contain much different,  potentially toxic chemicals than what you’ll find in regular whitening toothpastes. Like we want to avoid harmful chemicals in our food, we should also do the same with our hygiene routine.

There are several, natural ways to brighten up your smile that everyone can try.

Here are some of the easiest to try …

1. Baking Soda

Baking soda can be a harsh on the teeth on its own, but is the main product found in natural whitening toothpastes that don’t contain chemicals (many vegan brands contain it as well). It’s one of the most natural ways to remove stains from the teeth and is a natural cleanser for the mouth. Baking soda is typically diluted with other ingredients in a toothpaste, making it a bit safer in this form, however, once a week, you can also brush a water-based paste made with baking soda too. Mix 1 tsp. baking soda with 3 tsp. water, stir into a paste, and brush for a natural whitening treatment. Just do this sparingly and only use a bit to ensure you protect your teeth enamel.

2. Eat Raw Veggies

Raw veggies are crunchy and naturally scrub our teeth the way nature intended. Keeping your teeth clean is important for maintaining a white smile and crunchy foods act just like your toothbrush to whisk away debris (though you should still brush afterwards!) Raw veggies also help optimize healthy bacteria levels in the mouth to keep our mouths overall healthy, unlike sugar and refined foods that lead to cavities and can lead to discolored teeth as well. You should still be sure to brush your teeth, of course, but crunchy foods like carrots, broccoli, celery, and peppers are all great foods to munch on instead of processed foods.

3. Use a Natural Rinse After Brushing

A simple helpful way to keep teeth white naturally is to be sure you keep them clean around the clock. The longer food sits on our teeth, the more likely we are to have discoloration due to the build-up of bacteria in the mouth. Overall good hygiene helps keep you mouth not just clean, but also helps assist in naturally white teeht. After brushing your teeth, use a natural rinse made of either hydrogen peroxide diluted in water or apple cider vinegar. Dilute 1 tbsp. of either of these with 1/4 cup cold water and swish for 1-2 minutes. Just be sure to rinse your mouth with plain water afterwards since apple cider vinegar and peroxide are very cleansing and slightly abrasive, which is how they work their magic. If you don’t like the taste, feel free to use a drop of peppermint oil for a minty boost!

4. Oil-Pulling

Though it’s thought of as a new health trend, oil-pulling has actually been done for many years in Ayurvedic cultures and is said to help naturally cleanse the mouth. Coconut oil is the top oil to use because it’s a natural anti-bacterial oil. The gist of this practice is to swish with oil in the morning without swallowing it for as long as you can. You only need around a teaspoon of oil. You then spit out the oil and brush as accordingly. It works differently for many people, but since coconut oil is pretty much amazing at almost any hygiene need, why not give it a try here too?

5. Natural Toothpaste

Another simple way to whiten your teeth is to make a natural toothpaste. Use 1/2 cup coconut oil and add in 1/4 cup natural baking soda, and a couple drops of peppermint extract. Mix all of these together and store in a mason jar. This is a great natural toothpaste many people use and can naturally help keep your teeth white. You can also use it as a face scrub as a side benefit!

Q: My girlfriend is from Indonesia and received the anti biotic, Tetracycline, when she was about 3 years old. When her adult teeth came in, they were grey in color. I think she has only one cavity and she is 33, so her teeth seem to be strong, just an unattractive color. She has tried tooth whitening with no good results. It seems that they turned grey from the inside out. Is there anything natural that she can do to restore the white color that antibiotics robbed her teeth of?

    A:

She has to reverse the damage of antibiotics by cleansing constantly to the duration contrasted with how long she took antibiotics. It's the only way since the problem originates from the inside out.

Q: In the past two months I have lost two molars, these molars had mercury fillings. I have poor iron deficiency, due to loss of blood due to having uterine fibroids. I do believe that my molars dropped out due to this deficiency, and stress. I do get tooth pain from the resulting piece of the molar that is still inside of my mouth. I have to take acetominiphen to stop the pain. I read your article in which you said that you have not been to a dentist in many years, and your teeth are just fine. A dentist told me that if I do not have the molars replaced the the rest of my teeth will spread apart. I am unsure what to do. Do I have two spaces without teeth? Do I leave my other teeth spread apart? Do I leave that area alone? Do I get fake stuff in my mouth? I have begun the process of oil pulling to help with cleansing. I don't know how many times a day I should oil pull? I will be purchasing a tongue scraper, and I have begun to floss more often. I need some advice on proper dental care. Also how often should one have their teeth professionally cleaned, or is there a process in which I can learn to professionally clean my teeth myself, rather than paying a dental hygienist.

    A:

Dental care is pretty allopathic, and you need to make a choice about the piece of molar in your mouth. Are you willing to deal with your teeth spreading. While my teeth have been fine since 1994, I still live with the damage of my past (I have two teeth that were pulled and have empty space where the molars were - I didn't want plastic or anything synthetic in my mouth). The last time I went to the dentist, he did major damage trying to pull my tooth out. A piece of teeth went through my gums, and slightly protruded through my mouth. It eventually healed, but I learned my lesson. So you have a choice to make, Beloved! Only you can make that decision. You don't want to live with pain though! That's why I got my two teeth pulled - the pain was unbearable! I've been fine ever since due to my vegan and raw foods diet. I know brush my teeth with Dherbs.com Herbal Tooth Powder and sometimes Activated Charcoal. These help keep the teeth very white and the mouth hygienic. You only oil pull once a day, or if you oil pull more than once, you only do so on an empty stomach.

Q: I am 42 years old. My teeth are not the straightest, but they seem heathy an are white. The dentist recommended that I get braces or a visalign to straighten mainly the bottom teeth. He stated "As we age roots may get twisted and it could lead to problems." I have the 2 bottom canine, that are almost sideways. What would be your opinion be regarding correcting this based on possibilities?

    A:

Great question! I would be able to answer better if I could actually see your teeth. The alignment of our canines protect all our other teeth. They are critical. Two things for sure happen when the canines come in rotated. One, they do not function fully and therefore all your other teeth can get unusual forces placed on them. We call these forces interferences. Secondly the root of the canine can end up very close to the root of the lateral next to it. When this occurs, bacteria can travel down the side of the tooth, under the gum and increase the possibility that you get bone loss between the two teeth (canine and lateral). The bone is very thin between those roots when the canine is rotated. Also, more plaque accumulates because it is often difficult to clean between the canine and lateral.

These are the reasons I would suggest moving forward with braces if what I am describing pertains to you. I hope this makes sense.

    Thanks, DMO

Q: I have metal fillings in my mouth do I have to stay that way or can my teeth grow back. I heard that there are commercial mouthwashes that can grow teeth, but I want the natural way.

    A:

The metal can be removed. However, it will take a very long time for the teeth to grow back or heal, but it can be done! A commercial mouthwash is unnatural and an unnatural thing cannot help the teeth grow back.

Q: My partner has a serious problem with his gums. He is only thirty three and he's losing most of his teeth. The dentist keeps removing them and he has some implants. What can he take to build his gums up and his teeth stop falling out?

A: His body is most likely too acidic. He needs to drastically change his diet to more alkaline in order to start healing.

Also, he should start by gargling with warm water, sea salt and hydrogen peroxide 2-3 times a day.

An herbal toothpowder will also help him. A good toothpowder stops gums from bleeding!
