Tips For Maintaining Motivation In The Freezing Cold

It’s easy to run, walk, hike, and boot camp it up to your heart’s content when the sun is shining and it’s 70 degrees outside, but when the temperature drops and the skies turn gray, exercise becomes a task. Even still, exercise is as important to your overall health in the winter as it is in the summer. Need to stay motivated to exercise during the upcoming winter? Here’s how:

1. Invest in the right cold weather exercise gear.

It’s about finding the perfect balance of clothing when it’s cold outside. Layers are key to exercising in the winter. Exercise generates heat, but if you wear layers you can start to remove them as you warm up. Avoid cotton, which stays wet next to your skin. Instead, put on a thin layer of synthetic material like polypropylene to draw sweat away from the body. Also, protect your hands and head with gloves and a hat. When you’re warm enough, the sun might as well be shining.

2. Train for a race.

Training for a race is a great way to stay motivated during the winter. For one, there’s excitement at the end of the sometimes dark tunnel of winter. Additionally, you’ve already paid for something which is all the more motivation to get it done. Take it a step further and plan to run a race as part of a larger vacation. This way you’ll have the motivation of the race and excitement of planning a trip altogether. One winter, my husband and I trained to run a marathon in Hawaii. We ran throughout the winter in Washington, DC and had the continual motivation of an Hawaiian carrot.

3. Get a trainer.

Hiring a trainer during the winter months may be worth the cost. Again, your wallet can be motivation and at the same time you have someone that you’re forced to answer to if you snooze your alarm clock an hour past your morning workout.

4. Try hot yoga.

Hot yoga is a great workout and the winter is the perfect time to give it a try. In Bikram Yoga, the room is heated up between 113 and 117 degrees Fahrenheit. Enthusiasts claim it promotes cellular metabolism, detoxification, and allows the muscles to open up. Other forms of yoga heat the room up but usually not as warm as Bikram. It’s a good way to turn up the heat and detox when it’s cold outside.

5. Change your mind.

Instead of viewing winter as a cold, dark season when you’re stuck inside, change your perspective. Enjoy the solitude of this quiet season and use this time to revisit your exercise goals.

    Q: Joe was 14 when a fever blister escalated to an acidic, thrush, bacterial order in the mouth. After 3 days his doctor admitted him to the hospital.     Q: My daughter is now 6 years old and at the age of 1 was diagnosed with asthma. She was on albuterol and predisone for 4 years off and on and only taking the medicine when her asthma flared up. While she was on this medicine I noticed that she had lack of an appetite. I started giving her organic milk and keeping her tightly clothed in the winter and by the time she was 4.5 years I got it under control that she didn't have an attack for a year.     Let the child perform the Children's Detox. Give her pear juice, plum juice, and prune juice periodically. The child sounds constipated. If the stomach is bloated and growing, clearly the child is backed up. Feed the child more fruits and vegetables (as they are loaded with enzymes which help with bowel movements).

    The asthma can be knocked out with the herbs Mullein leaf, Eucalyptus, Lobelia, and Wild Cherry Bark. Give them to the child in tea form. Alternate the teas, switching them up, making sure she drinks all of them. Mullein leaf by far is the best. Asthma is nothing but a mucus condition.     It's best to keep exercise to a minimum. When you exercise your body pulls blood away from your core and into your limbs (fight or flight response). That directs blood away from your healing response. Also high impact or weight training requires more calories and more protein which will over work the organs that should be using their energy healing.

    Q: As a diet controlled diabetic I question being able to change my diet(to raw/live foods) while I keep up the same rigorous exercise and fitness program without suffering from too many low readings of which I am prone.The program has gotten me off insulin.I also have diverticulitis and seeds and nuts have been a problem for me in the past.     Thanks for the question. I hope this helps. If you are under a doctors supervision I am forbidden to give you any advice that may alter a doctors advice. They have little to no nutritional training but their word trumps everyone. 

    What I can do is point you in the direction of programs getting the results you desire. Those three are Dr. Neil M. Barnards "program for preventing and reversing diabetes" (DVD,book), Dr. Gabriel Cousins "Raw in 30" program (DVD) and "There is a cure for diabetes" (book), and recently The Gerson Therapy has released a program for diabetes (book). 

    The common denominator in all three programs is a low fat vegan diet. The differences are that Barnard's program is a cooked vegan diet while Cousins' and Gerson's program are raw. All get results but the raw programs have a 75 percent success rate in 1 month where as the cooked version of Barnards get results in 6 months. Big difference.

    I have gotten people off of insulin in around 2 months using a high raw and low fat vegan diet. I use no oils and nuts. I do encourage avocados and seeds for fats. However, with diverticulitis you must avoid seeds until your body repairs itself through a high alkaline diet. I suggest getting a bulk of your fats from avocados and coconut. I usually limit myself to a half an avocados worth of fat a day. 

    I would look into those books first and if you are under a doctors supervision bring those materials to him/her and see what they say.

    Exercise is great, but the healthy exercises include Pilates, yoga, tai-chi, qi chong, stretching, swimming, etc. Jogging is okay if on sand, dirt, or grass. If on cement/asphalt - DANGEROUS (destroys the bones and uterus in women). The gym is okay but weight lifting and other exercises are dangerous and destroy connective tissue.
