Vegan Samosa

Samosas are a great dinner party appetizer, and leftover samosas make a perfect midday snack or lunch item. After you’ve made them once, they’re easy and fun to experiment with, and you can add your favorite vegetables and spices to the filling.

This recipe is a healthy vegan version of classic Indian samosas. Instead of deep-frying them, save on your oil and health and bake them in the oven! Serve with your favorite tomato sauce or chutney, or eat as is!

Dough Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups flour
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil

Filling

  • 2 small potatoes, cubed
  • 1 cup squash, cubed
  • 1 cup cauliflower, cubed
  • 1 small can or 1/2 pack frozen peas
  • 1 small can corn
  • 1/4 tsp. cumin seeds
  • 1/4 tsp. powdered cumin
  • 1/4 tsp. turmeric
  • 1/4 tsp. minced ginger
  • 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil
  • Salt to taste

Directions

The dough can be prepared in advance, and it’s best to use your hands to knead. In a large bowl, mix the 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil into the flour until you can no longer see or feel the oil. Mix the salt into the warm water, and pour the water gradually into the dough, kneading with your hands. Once the dough is kneaded well, set aside in a plastic bag or plastic wrap for 20 minutes, then knead again.

While the dough is resting for 20 minutes, you can work on the filling! In a saucepan, warm the oil. Once it’s hot fry the cumin seeds, cumin, turmeric and ginger for 30 seconds.

Add the potatoes, squash and cauliflower, and simmer on a low heat for 15 minutes. Add a few drops of water if the vegetables stick to the pan.

Once cool, add the peas and corn, salt to taste. You can also add a spoonful or two of fresh cilantro.

Assembling the samosas: Roll the samosa dough into 4-5 inch circles, and cut the circle in half with a knife. Using a bit of water, take your semicircle and make a fold in the shape of a triangle. Seal along the fold.

Put this cone carefully between your thumb and index finger and place a ball of the filling inside. Wet your finger and run it along the edges of the dough with water and seal to enclose the stuffing, pinching the edges and folding over.

Once the samosas are assembled, cook at 350 Fahrenheit for 10 minutes on one side, then flip over and cook for 10 minutes on the other side.

This recipe makes about 20 samosas.

    Yes, sea salt in water is a mild laxative!

    You can do it as often as you FEEL the need to drink or take it. 

    You can also consume the Master Cleanse (cayenne, maple syrup, lemon juice) if you choose. You can drink this as much as you like depending on how you feel.

    And yes, you can perform enemas 2X a day! Enemas are very helpful for health!

    Q: Dasani water, if I remember correctly, was banned from the U.K. It contains salt as well as potassium chloride. Essentia contains calcium chloride, as well as sodium bicarbonate, magnesium sulfate, dipotassium phosphate. Are all the ingredients in Essentia safe? One would have do an independent test on the water. Dasani is crap and I no longer drink Essentia but it would be my brand of choice of bottled water if I was to purchase water again.

    Personally I have an alkaline-antioxidant water machine (Neptune brand) that produces alkaline, antioxidant, oxygenate, mineralized water that is made in Asia.

    Q: How often should one eat cook food? I'm a vegan, I do not consume any meat, seafood, milk what so ever. I eat water cresses like everyday so as cook food. Like white rice with black bean sauce, spinach, and pasta at time's I'll eat some Chinese fried rice, veggie roll, steamed vegetables, any advice?

    You can eat cooked food as much as you like. However, try to incorporate as many nutrient-dense raw foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, raw nuts and seeds, into your diet to make sure you are receiving an adequate amount of nutrients.

    Q: I love to drink water, but I like to drink hot water you know boiling water slightly cooled. Is there a benefit, or disadvantage to this compared to drinking room temperature water? Secondly, the water I drink is boiled water. Alkaline water is not a privilege most Kenyans have. If 56% of the population is living below poverty line you do the math. So the water I drink is tap water, that I boil to make it safe for drinking. When I get to work I have Alkaline water as my work place provides me with that provision. I think this is detailed enough for you to get the picture and help. Once again (I love you) in Swahili for spreading the gospel!

    Q: I've been a vegan for 2 years now. I've done the FBD 3 times in these two years, but my urine is still yellow. The only time it is clear is immediately after I drink water (reverse osmosis water). If I miss a day of drinking water, my urine goes back to being dark yellow. Does this mean that my body is still very toxic? Also, is it normal to release urine 5 to 15 minutes after drinking liquids? I would think that water would need to stay in the body for awhile for proper hydration and cleansing.

    From what you wrote I would suggest you start drinking alkaline water (purchase an alkaline water machine, you can find various brands in our e-book "Alternative Diet and Lifestyle Manual"). If you are urinating within 10-15 minutes of drinking water you are not absorbing the water, and thus you require micro-clustered water which an alkaline (and ionizing) water machine does.     Q: Hi Dherbs.com, how are you? About two years ago my grandmother purchased an ozone machine and I am wondering if you could answer a question I have about it: How long does the water remain "ozonated" after turning the machine off?     Q: In the Full Body Detox booklet it states I can have wild rice if I need something warm. I really don't like wild rice, but can I make myself a vegetable soup which I prefer. To me its more filling then the rice.
