Vegan Superfoods To Eat Now

Start 2015 off right by ditching the vegan junk food and raiding the produce section.

One of the most exciting things about entering a new year is the unfulfilled potential, promise, and mystery to come in the next 365 days. While the future may be uncertain, there is one thing about New Year’s that never changes: committing to resolutions. Some, like running ten miles a day, are obviously unrealistic, while others, like learning French, seem more plausible goals. While dedicating more time to exercise and self-improvement will surely make 2015 a more vibrant year, the decision to fuel your body with healthier foods will leave you happier and rejuvenated all year long. To get started, stock kitchen shelves with these six essential superfoods.

Avocados
The oleic acid in this good-fat-filled fruit works to improve cholesterol levels, while potassium and folate lower the risk of stroke and heart attacks. Avocados are the perfect choice to satisfy a savory fix. Slice an avocado and sprinkle with a dash of sea salt for the perfect afternoon snack, or dice it into cubes and toss into a delicious, calcium-rich kale salad.

Blueberries
Ever wonder why this superfood has such a deep blue coloring? The culprit is flavanoids, antioxidants that fight free radicals contributing to heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer’s. Blueberries can liven up a morning routine by simply being stirred into soy yogurt or oatmeal, and they offer the perfect healthy snack time treat when eaten straight from the container. Adding blueberries to muffin and pancake batters is one way to sneak these nutritional powerhouses into a diet, but a healthier and equally sugary alternative is to use them in homemade popsicles!

Garlic
This immune system cleanser has at least two health perks worth bragging about: since garlic is rich in sulfur compounds, it can help ward off infection, heart disease, and high cholesterol. Its other health benefit is that it is delicious. The super healthy bacteria-fighting properties in garlic ensure that illness will stay at bay, especially if eaten raw. For those not garlic-obsessed enough to chew on raw cloves, try incorporating diced garlic into pastas, marinades and sauces, soups, and just about anything else.

Beans
Adults and teens who consume beans are 23 percent less likely to have large waists compared to people who never eat beans, according to a study by The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, so stock up on this magical fruit! Soluble fiber promotes digestive health and keeps cholesterol levels in check. Potassium promises to lower blood pressure, and folic acid supports heart health. Purée garbanzo beans to create a creamy texture for soups, throw a handful of black beans in a southwest salad, or stick with the classic, unbeatable combination of rice and beans.

Sweet Potatoes
If you thought sweet potatoes were a member of the nightshade family, you thought wrong. These super healthy veggies actually have much more in common with carrots than russets. The bright orange color of sweet potatoes promises high levels of betacarotene, which is known to promote healthy skin, eyes, and cardio health. Sweet potatoes are a great vegetable choice anytime of year, whether served in a purée to accompany tofu dishes or served piping hot in sweet potato lentil chili.

Walnuts
Loaded with alpha-linoleic acid, an Omega-3, to keep your heart and brain functioning optimally, walnuts are essetial. Walnuts also offer Omega-6s for the perfect fatty-acid ratio and are easy to incorporate into a daily diet, whether added to soy yogurt or cereal during breakfast or caramelized and mixed into a fresh salad at lunchtime. If walnuts seem unappealing to appetites, try using them to make homemade vegan Parmesan, where the taste it largely masked by other ingredients and seasonings. This is a guaranteed way to get those essential Omega-3s-and a tasty topping for pretty much everything.

Q: Is necessary to continue food combining after completing FULL BODY DETOX in 20 Days? For example can you consume sweet fruit with sub acid & acid fruit also starches and vegetable (beans) proteins together? I learned in Nutrition that starches (rice) and beans are complete protein when combined together that our body needs. Are you at risk for protein deficiency if consuming vegan diet?

    A:

IT'S YOUR CHOICE! OF COURSE IT'S BEST TO CONTINUE TO DO SO. IT'S UP TO YOU, BELOVED! I PERSONALLY DON'T RECOMMEND IT. NOT TRUE! YOU CAN'T GET PROTEIN FROM COOKED FOODS REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE FOOD IS. OF COURSE NOT, UNLESS YOU ARE IGNORANT TO PROTEIN, REAL PROTEIN, HOW AND WHERE TO GET IT.

Q: What Are Some Natural Sweet Treats (Junk Foods) I can Consume? Under free will you can consume what you like, but healthier products are best. You will find plenty of "healthier" snack, treat, and junk foods at good health food stores such as Whole Foods Market, PCC Natural Food Stores, Erewhon, Trader Joes, Natural Grocers, New Frontiers, etc. Just make sure to abstain from salt, sugar, and other harmful chemicals in the products you buy. We list many companies of alternative foods and products (and their website addresses) in our ALTERNATIVE DIET AND LIFESTYLES MANUAL.

Q: I am on my 3rd day of the fully body cleansing. I am definitely doing this to lose weight. I am a 52 year old, black, Christian, wife, mother to 21 and 14 year old girls, legal secretary who is 450 lbs. I am to the point now where if I don't do this I'm going to be housebound. I can barely move some days that is why I started this because I feel so unhealthy. I have a question about the nuts. I got all gun-ho and ordered $135.00 worth of organic nuts from nuts.com. I got raisins, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, walnuts, pecans, pistachios and cashews and mixed them all up together (well I purchased 2 lbs of each but I only mixed up 1 lb of each together). Anyway, I was reading about how much calories are in nuts. Should I not pay attention to that because I was consuming a lot of calories in the first place or do I have to watch how many nuts I eat? I have put some nuts in a sandwich bags and basically filled it up and that is supposed to be my nuts ration for the day. I am also eating fruits and vegetables. So far the fruit have been grapes, grapefruit, red apples, pears, green apples and bananas. The vegetables have all been in a salad: tomatoes, celery spinach leaves, carrots, mixed in balsamic vinaigrette. I only ate the salad Monday night all the other times I have just eaten the fruit and nuts. I am also consuming approximately 75-100 oz of water. Sorry I’m long winded I just wanted you to get the entire picture.

    A:

Thanks for the question, I can definitely help you.

I am currently writing an eBook for www.dherbs.com called "Losing weight the healthy way." I have been a weight loss counselor for many years. I am also a health coach, personal trainer, bodymind nutritionist, and a vegan lifestyle coach.

When it comes to weight loss most programs want you to lose weight to get healthy. My mindset is to get healthy and lose weight.

In my health/fitness/nutrition coaching program www.theveganeffect.com I use a lowfat/high carb/ high raw/ nutrient dense/ high alkaline diet to achieve long term weight loss success. So far I am 100 percent in getting clients long lasting weight loss. If you are interested in my program please fill out the health history form on the side of the web page. We could have a free 1 hour initial consultation over skype to see how I can best help you.

Nuts are best kept to a minimum if you use them at all. Nuts are extremely high in fat and have the opposite omega 3- omega 6 ratio that is optimal for health. Seeds are best as far as ratios are concerned. Also nuts are truly easy to over eat and cause your nutrient ratios to be off.

A healthy vegan diet is a high raw fruitarian diet.

    Example:

Breakfast: green smoothie. (500-1000 calories of fruits blended with a handful of greens and water)

Bridge: Dates and strawberries (500 calories)

Lunch: Salad with low sugar fruits (cucumber, tomato, squash, bell peppers) topped with fruit, beans, psuedo grains,

    Bridge: 2-3 apples

Dinner: Raw wraps (collard greens) with low sugar fruit and tahini

    Snack: Sorbet

    Hope this helps

Q: Hi I'm a 48 year old black man and I need some help I got a lot going on I have high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. I had a heart attack 12-24-07. I smoke about a pack a day and have low sex drive. and it looks like I ate a basket ball. I'm 5'9" and 252 lbs so I need to lose about 60 pounds mostly in my belly and to top it off I can't take a walk or PLAY POOL because I have sciatica I can't bend over to the table. I'm sluggish all day. So what herbs do you recommend?

    A:

Beloved, you need to first detox (FULL BODY DETOX) followed by the PANCREAS CLEANSE AND REGIMEN followed by the 10-DAY SUPREME COLON CLEANSE followed by the TOTAL MALE CLEANSE. A lot of cleanses but if you perform them you'll wipe away all of your present conditions something you need to do and fast. Start with one kit at a time and proceed with the next.

Q: My Doctor wants me to start using the Cholesterol medication, Zocor. He says my high cholesterol is due to genetics. I'm not crazy about the idea of using this medication that he says may affect my liver. I've tried lowering the 'bad' cholesterol with diet and exercise. What are my natural food options? Thanks! After you do the full body detox and want to pursue other cleanses do you have to stay on a raw diet. Can you eat cooked beans or the herbs won’t be as effective? I’m a college student and I need food for thought and sometimes things aren’t accessible.

    A:

I'd recommend you start taking CHOLESTEROL BUSTER, ELECTRIC GREENS CELL FOOD, and INTESTINAL JANITOR (Fiber). Food-wise, all fruits and vegetables will help lower your cholesterol levels. Avoid meat and dairy products if your cholesterol levels are high.

Q: At age 15 I started getting cysts in my sweat glands (under arms, under breasts, groin area). Doctors treated me with antibiotics and creams over the years... it left so much scar tissue...Around age 23 I had my sweat glands removed and at that time I was diagnosed with HS (Hydra denitus supporativa)... the problem went away for about a year, and eventually moved to another place (the groin).. seems to flare up monthly during my menstrual cycle.. Since then, I was diagnosed with kidney disease, I am a dialysis patient with High blood pressure, high cholesterol.. I am on at least 6 medications to regulate my blood pressure, cholesterol, potassium, and phosphorous levels.. Due to all these changes, my libido is extremely low and almost nonexistent.. I have a hard time achieving a climax with my partner...I am married with 3 young children... I've considered weight loss surgery as a way to finally get my weight under control as it has been a huge issue for the last 10 years. What can you recommend that I can take to detox and cleanse myself of all my health issues?? Is there really anything out there to help my situation??

    A:

There's always help! Keep your mind focused and stay positive. Give the Full Body Cleanse a try followed by the Pancreas Cleanse.

Q: My father (age 56 who's between healthy and sick. jogs every morning, but doesn't eat healthy) has pain traveling from knee, back to shoulder, I, myself am very health conscious! but I can't put my finger on this one! His (history) no high blood pressure, non-diabetic, no history of heart attics, stroke etc... but loves to eat sweets.. cakes, cookies, milk, ice cream, etc....I believe this could be a combination of many things, like yeast build up, gas, arteries clogged. Can you help me?

    A:

The best way to find out is have your father (or someone on his behalf) to schedule a health consultation so we can get at the root of the problem. While there could be a host of things causing the problem on the physical level, I'm more interested at getting at the emotional root of the problems. Product-wise, I would have your father start with the FULL BODY DETOX.

Q: I had 2 jaw bone (cavitations) surgeries, from holistic dentist, a dentist I went to prior caused major trauma to the bone and 3 days later my whole face was on fire, this has been 3 years since this happened, he might have pushed the infection I had in my system through the nerves, I am a whole lot better but still experience pain, pressure and fogginess in my head causing me not to think straight at times, pain behind my ears and in lower jaw, as well as discomfort and pressure. I would like to know what product would be good for this, the brain and heart circulation herb? I pretty much have to stay on a raw food diet to maintain my health but this is not totally getting rid of the problem, there is inflammation and pain in my jaws if I eat the wrong thing. Could you please guide me in the right direction?

    A:

Herbs to try: BRAIN TUNER, NERVES FORMULA, MSM SULFUR, and HEADACHE AND PAIN FORMULA. Also, purchase OXY-DROPS for your drinking water (10-20 drops per glass).

Q: For about 2.5 months I have been on the path of taking care of my temple (body). I am more dedicated than I have been in the past. One I was diagnose with so-called diabetes (type II) took the pills (made me sicker than I was) and now my doctor has stressed taking insulin injections. Which I am totally against it. Since I have been taking the Pancreas formula, changed my diet (no meats, juicing, fresh fruits, green veggies (organic))& vigorous exercise (cardio), my A1c has gone from 10.9 to 8.6(should be 6.5) in the span of 2mths. Glucose 137 (should be 70-125) has been high as 238 and higher. However, my doctor insist that my diabetes is not controlled, and will not get better because the pancreas function in type2 diabetics declines as time goes on. Therefore, insulin injection will deter kidney failure, heart attack, body amputations, and blindness. I know our emotions help with the conditions of the disease body. What can I do to continue to lower blood sugars to a healthy level? Lower trigylcerides and cholesterol(lower in the last two months)? My blood pressure is 122/80.

    A:

Performing the Pancreas kit and regimen as much and as often as you can and you'll get your desired results.

Great maintenance formulas include CIRCUL-AID, PANCREAS FORMULA, SUGAR BUSTER, and BIO-INSULIN.

Q: I just purchased the Pancreas Kit for children, for my 4 year old who was diagnosed with type one diabetes. I have been feeding her a raw diet of just vegetables. The diet includes no dairy, no grains, and fruit for a week. I also started the Pancreas kit last week too. I was wondering if there is any reason why her blood sugar levels would go up? All she is eating is veggies, and her sugar levels are at 300 most of the time. Even if she doesn't eat anything, it still goes up to 300. I also know it says you cannot tell us not to give, or not to give her insulin, or not. I am still currently giving it to her. Does the pancreas kit work just as well if the are receiving insulin or not? Or does it hinder the process?. I would really appreciate other advise you would offer. Thanks so much!

    A:

Drugs and herbs don't mix! They cancel each other out. The blood sugar will go up and down due to the body attempting to regulate, and normalize the blood sugar levels. Perfectly normal! It's called "healing crisis. Whatever you guys choose to do, simply keep monitoring the person. Ask the person how he/she feels (very important).

Q: My question however, is about my son. I have an 11 year old who has been diagnosed with high-functioning autism. He has problems staying focused. Health-wise he often suffers from respiratory issues. He breathes heavy, is constantly congested, and snores. My son has been on Risperdal for about 6 months for his autism symptoms. This medication has caused my son to gain over 40 pounds within an 8 month period of time. I really want to wean my child off of this drug, obviously because of the potential harm it will do to his overall health. We have a family history of diabetes and this worries me. My son is also very sluggish and has a problem with constipation. The doctor once did an x-ray and said he was very "backed up". She prescribed a laxative, but this did not work. Can you tell me what you would recommend?

    A:

At some point you will really have to decide to go drugless in helping your son as drugs don't heal anything that God created. That drug he's taking that made him gain 40 pounds sounds like a steroid (which usually adds weight on to the body). I would recommend that the child performs the CHILDREN DETOX (liquid extracts) to cleanse his body and then begin consuming our teas (i.e. BRAIN TUNER), KHEMETIAN GOLD, and Crystal Elixirs to help with his ADD. Our ADD tonic will be out in late November or early December 2008. Why worry about diabetes when he does not have it at present? You are thinking the worst into existence with your thoughts. What you fear will appear! Think positive and thus attract only positive in your life.

Q: After the laser surgery last year, I have been taking the Eye Formula for high pressure 4 months now. I take 8 tablets a day and I use the an MSM Eye Drops and my pressure drops and my eyes feel very healthy. The doctor told me come back in a year, but about a week ago I started to feel pain in my eyes sometimes sharp sometimes less but all the time. Please advise.

    A:

Double up on your eye regimen! Eat more blueberries. Take extra capsules of Eye Formula, etc. It would be a good idea for you to perform the Eye Kit. The Eye Kit includes six distinct formulas that are created with the intention of helping your body maintain, restore, and fend off any pending eye issues. These formulas not only are meant to help nourish, repair, and strengthen the eyes, but they also are meant to help maintain a healthy circulation throughout the body.

Q: I have white spots over 40 percent on my body and some very dry scaly dark spots on parts of my body. I read some place in one of your articles that with these specific herbs regardless of the skin disorder these herbs will help to reverse the disorder regardless of skin condition. Second I don’t have health insurance so I’m looking to you for help. Please help me. I don’t trust doctors. You go see a doctor for one issue and he prescribes a drug, next thing you know your back with five new problems and more drugs. So is there a combination of herbs for optimum health and well being? Something that will produce excellent health preventing any invader of any kind harming me. Protecting every important organ for optimum health and well being (i.e. colon, heart, lungs, liver). I just want to be 100 percent straight with excellent health

    A:

Q: My sister has sickle cell anemia and has to deal with her potassium levels being too high. Although she drinks plenty of water all of the time she was just hospitalized for being dehydrated as well as high potassium levels. This is my question; to help her dehydration if she drank water with the added vitamins would that help? and what can she do to control her potassium levels? She does not eat foods with potassium and her levels are still high.

    A:

YES, IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO DRINK WATER WITH VITAMINS ADDED TO THEM. THE BEST FORM OF VITAMINS AND MINERALS IS KHEMETIAN GOLD. THIS FORMULA WILL ALSO ADDRESS HER POTASSIUM IMBALANCE AS WELL.

Q: I am writing you with concern for my father. He is 54 years old, and was just diagnosed with an enlarged heart. He is very worried, and to be honest I am too. I told him that he immediately needs to go on the Full Body Detox. Start a raw foods diet that includes no meats, and no dairy. Do you think he should get a colonic? Should he get it first? He began running this morning, and has been walking in the evenings. He has a HUGE stomach. It looks as if he is about 8 months pregnant. SOLID! We live in the Philadelphia Area and we are Muslim. The only person we know that is GOOD as far as colonics is a female, and he has some reservations about that. My mother always says "Do what you gotta do". What steps should he take to heal his body? In what order? I know it may be kind of hard to diagnose, or give steps to a third person. I am really concerned, and afraid that his concern may cause more damage to his heart. I am almost certain that my father would not mind talking to you. He may be impressed with your knowledge. All the herbalist we know thus far have been women. As soon as he told us of his illness I immediately thought of you. I pray that you can help us. We all as a family need to get our health together. PLEASE HELP US the best way you can. . . . .

Q: Greetings & Namaste, First, thank you for being U-activated! So many potential energies unable to convert into kinetic activities because of our Earthly baggage(s). Personally, I haven't found the right formula to keep my beautiful curves, which is the major reason I am not vegan/raw now. In my perfect world, I'd have a great-tasting, non-dairy,wheat & gluten source of protein, juiced exotic veggie/fruit smoothies, yummy raw nuts/raisins, and absolutely no meat- the fountain of youth, literally, running thru my body! As i'm sure the cognitive wheels of your expertise are spiraling ready solutions, I ask that you also factor in social-economic status, and workout regiment. From my perspective, the price of health food is aggressively over-inflated compared to the affordability of processed and junk foods; add to that a general inaccessibility to the impoverished & disenfranchised, and dysfunctional eating psychologies impregnating entire families (for generations). I prefer high energy, high impact, anaerobic & weight-lifting training activities. So, you can see a petite person's dilemma. Thanks so much for your time and thoughts. Ms. Tiffany

Being raw or vegan does not have to be hard or expensive. The most inexpensive food are rice and beans. If you are budget consciense you should gravitate towards those foods. Stach based foods are super cheap. You should check out the book "eating vegan on 4 dollars a day" or any of Dr. Mcdougal's programs.

I run an online health/fitness/nutrition coaching program that can be found at www.theveganeffect.com. There you might find your answers.

Exercise programs do not have to be expensive either. I am a master at building fitness plans with the minimal of equipment. If all you have is your body weight than I can build you a 90 day plan. The same goes if all you have is a resistance band, exercise ball, dumbells, kettlebell, etc.

Q: Hello... the doctor told my sister that my 1 year old nephew has a heart murmur and that they will check again in 3 months and if it does not go away they will have to proceed with medication etc. I told her not to give him any doctor prescribed medication but I was not able to find any information regarding heart murmurs in children on your website, please provide some insight.
