Why You Should Cook At Home

Need a quick health fix? Then look no further than your kitchen — it’s an excellent place to start! Here are 5 reasons I urge everyone to bypass the boxes, pass on prepared foods, retreat from restaurants and make your kitchen your go-to source for sustainable health:

1. Home-cooked meals are a nutrient powerhouses.

I’m not saying that all restaurant food will short-change you nutritionally, but most fast-food, family-style and casual restaurants will. For them, it’s not about your health, it’s about their profits. For this reason, they use the cheapest ingredients possible in order to “pass the savings on” to you.

Unfortunately, this all comes at a high cost to your health, since you’re eating raw materials from large-scale industrial farms and feed lots, where GMO crops, nutrient-depleted soil, pesticides and antibiotics are the order of the day. Whereas, when you make your own meal with fresh, local and/or organic ingredients, each bite delivers loads of bio-available, health-supporting nutrients.

2. You’ll put money in your pocket.

Not to sound like your Depression-era grandpa, but dinner out once a week plus a few deli lunches is akin to lighting money on fire. Douse the flames by getting into a home-cooking groove, which will also deliver the added benefit of leftovers for lunch or dinner the next day.

Cutting back to just one or two dinners out a month and brown-bag lunches can save you roughly $2,000 to $4,000 a year, which healthfully-speaking, could be better spent on fresh, local produce, grass-fed meats and dairy from the farmers’ market.

You could also use it for a CSA (community supported agriculture) membership, which will give you exclusive access to deliveries of fresh, local, seasonal produce, no supermarket required. For a list of over 4,000 CSAs visit LocalHarvest.com.

3. You’ll have more control.

Sure, restaurant meals are fun and leave you without a sink full of dishes, but you have to keep in mind that even the best restaurants may be using unhealthy oils or slipping in scoops of extra sugar and salt. At home, you’re in control.

You’re in charge of portion size and what does or doesn’t get slipped onto your plate. When you’re your own top chef, you guarantee that there will be no surprises, weird additives or allergens that can make you fat or ill.

4. You’ll set a good example.

Cooking at home is a great lesson for the kids and a wonderful opportunity to bond over a shared activity. It’s also an opportunity to teach them an important life skill. Cooking isn’t a mysterious activity that just somehow happens — good food is a hands-on affair, where creativity and imagination can make playing with food fun (and for some, a career). The lesson of self-reliance is the meal that lasts forever!

But what if you don’t have time to cook?

“But Doc, I have NO time!”

I hear it every day, and it’s the number one reason most people fail to do it. Believe me, I get it — I’ve said it myself, but over the years, I’ve learned that cooking at home is one of those fundamental, health-supporting behaviors.

You have to commit to it, just like exercise and getting good sleep.

To help make the process a bit easier, here are a few time-saving kitchen tips:

1. Get plugged in.

A classic Crock-pot or slow-cooker is a great way to make soups, stews and more, without having to dedicate more than a few minutes to assembling the ingredients and hitting the on switch. Come back in a few hours and dinner is served. Doesn’t get much simpler than that.

2. Play with your food.

One of the best (not to mention fun) kitchen gadgets I’ve bought recently is a “spiralizer,” a clever little device that slices veggies into long, spaghetti-like strands. New favorite meal, served hot or cold: spiralized zucchini with home-made pesto, caramelized onions and sautéed veggies. Ah, bellissima!

3. Get your kids involved.

Many kids are used to passively watching parents cook. Get them onboard! Have them help out with prepping, chopping or even simply stirring ingredients not only to aid with meal prep, but also to help the actual cooking process.

4. Shop with a list and cook ahead.

To win the battle, you need a battle plan — so get that shopping list ready. But first, plan your meals for the week ahead. Based on the plan, put the list on your phone, adding to it as needed during the week. Set aside a few hours to make the meals ahead and freeze them so they’re ready when you are.

5. Shortcut strategically, while keeping health top of mind.

Stock the pantry with healthy, organic “convenience” foods so you can put a meal together quickly, without sacrificing nutrition. A few great basics to keep on hand include:

  • Frozen organic veggies like spinach
  • Broccoli and cauliflower
  • Washed and bagged organic greens
  • Canned organic beans in BPA-free cans
  • Pole-caught tuna
  • Capers
  • Olives
  • Sauerkraut

6. If you’re going to eat out, make it the exception and not the rule.

If you’re going to eat out, your best nutritional bets are closer-to-home-cooked, organic and farm-to-table style restaurants, which use more nutritionally-dense, fresh, local and organic ingredients to make your meal. Keep in mind though, too much of even a good thing can still hit wallets and waistlines hard, so make dining out a rare treat, not your default setting.

Q: I wrote to you a couple weeks ago asking if it was normal for me to have an outbreak only a day or two into the full body cleanse kit. You wrote back and told me that an outbreak is the body healing. It is two weeks later and I am still having an outbreak! Is this a good sign? Do you think this outbreak may continue on through my anti viral kit? I have been eating mostly fruits and vegetables, however I felt like I needed more substance and I was not enjoying my food at all... so I bought organic noodles and organic tomato sauce (sea salt only, tomatoes, no sugar, you get the point). Is adding some of this into my diet going to make the kits less effective or possibly not work?

    A:

The outbreak is a result of your body trying to eliminate the toxicity and impurities from your body. Continue to follow the guidelines of the Cleanse.

In regards to what you ate, YES, they make the cleanse less effective, so you may not want to eat much of cooked foods. Raw foods will optimize the cleanse. If you are having trouble staying full, try more healthy fats, like avocado, coconut cream, or raw nuts and seeds.

Q: What's the best way to start on a vegan/raw food diet? I am not sure what to eat to make sure I would get a nutritious diet-you may not be able to go into that much detail but how can I get sample meal plans for breakfast, lunch and dinner incorporating this type of diet-perhaps there is somewhere on the web I find something like this? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    A:

If I do say myself, the best way to start a raw food diet is to be coached by me. I run a 6 month health coaching program that is 60-90 percent raw and 100 percent vegan/gluten free/ allergy free. You can find out more about my program at www.theveganeffect.com. I am running a special of half off my program if you sign up before march 1st.

Here are some other tips to get started.

1: Join a raw food meetup group or community. Surround yourself with supportive people who can point you in the right direction. Try meetup.org or 30bananasaday.com

2: Read books like "beauty detox solution" by snyder, "80/10/10" by Dr. Graham., or "The Paradigm diet" by Adam Dave

3: Start simple with breakfast. Always start your day with a green smoothie. read "Green smoothie revolution" by forget authors name at the moment. heh.

A sample meal plan would be.

    Breakfast: Green smoothie

Bridge: raw bar, handful of nuts or seeds, or fruit

Lunch: Raw wraps made from collard greens. use a base of tahini, hummus, or nut butter. Fill with sprouts and colorful veggies

Bridge: raw bar, handful nuts or seeds, or fruit

Dinner: Raw pasta with a large salad

    Snack: Sorbet

Q: Thank you for always answering my questions. I have about two more. Okay, I'm currently living overseas where I'm limited on raw fresh foods (vegetables and fruits). I want to do the detox but I'm concerned that I won't have everything as far as raw food to be successful. I have access to basics (apples, oranges, bananas, tomatoes, avocados, melons, lettuce, cabbage, bean spouts, carrots, celery, peppers, green beans, peas, bagged nuts,) but nothing exotic by any means. Then I was told to safely eat some of the food in the local economy that we should wash it with a 5% bleach solution (is that safe...and if on the detox I'm thinking that would be a no go). Two questions?Given the mentioned availability of raw foods could I be able to successfully complete the detox (I don't have an issue with eating the same things over and over again) and two what can I do to clean local produce so that its safe for consumption? Apparently part of the issue is that they use human feces to fertilize. Thank you for your time and I look forward to your response

    A:

Yes, it seems you have enough raw food available to you to complete the cleanse.

In order to clean local produce, rinse thoroughly with apple cider vinegar to "disinfect" it. If apple cider vinegar is unavailable, just use water.

Q: I gave birth a week ago and am at home recovering. I feel like this was the healthiest pregnancy up until I was hit by another car who ran a red light. I was 34 weeks at that time. In the emergency room I did not know until afterwards that they injected me with steroids to speed up the development of the baby's lungs. This caused crazy side effects and at 37 weeks I had to give birth. She is fine, a little jaundice, but overall she is doing better than my first two children. I believe it has much to do with the fact that I took your pregnancy and calcium supplements. Thank You. My question to you is what should I be taking now? I am breast feeding and want to make sure that we are both going to be fine with what I ingest. Also, ever since the accident I have craved sugar. I have not been able to stop snacking. I would also like to point out that my hair fell out with my last pregnancy. I would like to avoid that as well. Thank you for listening and advising.

Q: What Are Some Natural Sweet Treats (Junk Foods) I can Consume? Under free will you can consume what you like, but healthier products are best. You will find plenty of "healthier" snack, treat, and junk foods at good health food stores such as Whole Foods Market, PCC Natural Food Stores, Erewhon, Trader Joes, Natural Grocers, New Frontiers, etc. Just make sure to abstain from salt, sugar, and other harmful chemicals in the products you buy. We list many companies of alternative foods and products (and their website addresses) in our ALTERNATIVE DIET AND LIFESTYLES MANUAL.

Q: I am writing to ask a couple of questions. I was reading one of the articles and it talked about the different types of cooking oil not to use. I wanted to know what would be a good cooking oil to use? I was looking for articles on HIV but didn't find any. I heard you on Warren Balentine speak briefly about AIDS. Can you enlighten me more? Also you talked about a home first aid kit in one of your articles. What exactly should be in a home first aid kit and is this mentioned in your e-book ALTERNATIVE DIET AND LIFESTYLES MANUAL, which I am about to order? And by me having a Mac book would I still be able to download the ebook?

    A:

Using a Mac book to download, should not be a problem for one of our e-books. Good cooking oils include: olive oil, grape seed oil, safflower oil. In re HIV and AIDS and Home First Aid Kit, the articles will be up next week. So stay tuned, Beloved!

Q: Do you have any suggestions for a breakfast, lunch & dinner schedule? I'm making the transition to a healthier diet due to fibroid tumors. Currently I have broken my eating menu into 3 parts, breakfast - fruits, lunch - salads, & dinner - baked potato or any other heavy meal I intend to eat. Is this a good start? Any suggestions you can give on healthier meals for dinner are most appreciated.

    A:

Please purchase our ALTERNATIVE DIET AND LIFESTYLES MANUAL e-book for the alternatives you seek. It's a great little resource, especially for new people starting their transition diet. You off to a good start, Beloved!

Q: How can I make the transition from cooked food, to raw food? Do you have any raw recipes for children? How can I get kids to eat raw?

    A:

Children do as you do, so let the child see you eating raw food as well. Fruits are the best raw foods to eat, as they are naturally sweet. Purchase "Alternative Diet and Lifestyle Manual", for the numerous raw food resources to assist you in this transition.

Q: I am 27 years old, 5'7", 125 lbs. I'm in good health; I haven't had any major health problems. The only health complaint I have is horrible menstrual cycles. After coming upon your website, I've decided to make major dietary changes. I've also decided to do the TOTAL WOMAN CLEANSE, and I've also ordered the maintenance herbs you've suggested for after the cleanse. I'd like to begin doing the TOTAL WOMAN CLEANSE and the FULL BODY DETOX regularly according to the seasons. I didn't order both at the same time due to financial reasons. My plan is to do the total woman cleanse at the start of fall...the full body detox at the start of winter...then again the woman's cleanse at the start of spring...and the FULL BODY DETOX at the start of summer. Is this a good plan? Or is there a more beneficial way for me to get the results I want?

    A:

It's a great plan and you'll love these cleanses and your body will thank you (and you can kiss those menstrual problems away as well). Thank you for your interest in Dherbs.Com!

Q: I've been taking the Full Body Cleanse for almost 2 weeks. In general, I feel much better. My question is if I can eat spirulina. and/or Ultimate Meal (mainly is Quinoa, millet, brown rice, yellow pea protein, spirulina and another natural ingredients) as breakfast or lunch. In case you do not know Ultimate Meal you can see it at www.ultimatelife.com Thank you. Ricardo. Your customer service rep told me after full body detox is good to take cholesterol formula. Is enough or Do I need to take lose weight tabs? after the full body cleanse? I am taking care of my diet and exercise 3 -4 times a week 2 hours each with stationary bike or tread mill and exercises with weights.

    A:

Spirulina and Ultimate Meal are excellent supplementary products to take in order for your body to receive an adequate amount of protein while on the cleanse.

Yes, take Cholesterol Formula (and Intestinal Cleanser) after you complete the cleanse. These products will serve as a transitionary period as your body slowly accustoms to returning back to normal routines.

Q: WE ARE VEGETARIANS, AND WERE EATING A LOT OF SOY PRODUCTS UNTIL YOUR NEWS LETTER CAME OUT ABOUT SOY PRODUCTS. DOES IT MAKE A DIFFERENCE IF THEY ARE ORGANIC SOY PRODUCTS? WHAT IS WRONG WITH ORGANIC YOGURT? It doesn't matter if the soy is organic or not! What's wrong with organic yogurt?

    A:

Please read our article "DANGEROUS DAIRY". There's plenty wrong with it! But remember, soy is far better than meat and dairy!

Q: Is sea salt and warm water a good natural laxative? If so how often do you recommend the use of sea salt for elimination? I was reading The Master Cleanser by Stanley Burroughs and it gives this recommendation, along with drinking lemon water mixed with organic syrup and cayenne pepper. Is it safe to give myself an enema 2xs per day using a hot water bottle filled with fresh squeezed organic lemon and distilled water? Asking this because Bzod had me to listen to 88.3 today here in Cincinnati and the guy (Mike) was telling how he does this regularly and has great results.

    A:

Yes, sea salt in water is a mild laxative!

You can do it as often as you FEEL the need to drink or take it.

You can also consume the Master Cleanse (cayenne, maple syrup, lemon juice) if you choose. You can drink this as much as you like depending on how you feel.

And yes, you can perform enemas 2X a day! Enemas are very helpful for health!

Q: I have a 2 month old newborn son, I did not circumcise, I had him at home without active/medical management, and I breast feed exclusively. However, my milk supply is decreasing by the day. I drink Organic Mother's Milk tea, Raspberry Leaf tee, and I drink 3 glasses of Spirulina water a day. Also, while I was pregnant suffered from Candida, up until a week before the natural birth. From then until now, the yeast was gone. I've recently started itching, and discharging again. Please advise me of your products that would heal the condition?

Q: You are absolutely right. I just read this e-mail but went to the market earlier and really had to look at myself. I have more money on my feet than I wanted to spend on what I put into myself. I am happy that I made that distinction and choose organic. Money is no option when it comes to my health anymore. Thanks for keeping it real. That?s exactly what I need! Today is my first day and I am extremely excited about living a different life. Ok, I'm ready to cleanse...again. I've decided to focus on cultivating my feminine self so I've purchased your Female Cleanse as a start. I have one question though. I was wondering if adding 15 minute sunbathing to the cleanse would be helpful? The sun appears to be quite healing so I thought it may complement the cleanse. Also, would it be unwise to start the cleanse if one is on their cycle?

    A:

Sunbathing won't hurt your cleanse. Not at all! And no, being on your menses also won't hurt or impair your cleanse.

Q: To make a long story short, my mother just found out that the 'cancer' her doctors had been treating her for the past 8 yrs was misdiagnosed. Her new Doctor informed her she's HIV positive and all the drugs; radiation/chemo treatments have only weakened her body. This information is quite distressing. My mother is now taking 15 pills a day and is essentially confined to home and bed. My mother will be 68 yrs old at the end of this month. Please advise what you would recommend she takes that will help her feel better and help get the toxic waste out of her body that these pill are helping to create. Thanks for any info regarding this matter.

    A:

Put her on the FULL BODY DETOX. After the detox, have her take ELECTRIC GREENS CELL FOOD capsules (5 capsules) 5-6 times a day and drink RAINFOREST TONIC TEA. She must eat only raw foods. Please read our â€CANCER: Causes and Remedies†article.

Q: I also wanted to ask you....many of these kits or all of them I think include an herbal colon cleanser of some type....I'm one that doesn't use public bathrooms...talk about sickening..seriously somebody at my work has managed to crap on the wall in the past so needless to say I don't use bathrooms other than my own. Anyway my question is will these things make you run to the bathroom? or is it gentle enough I can make it 4-6 hours? Also if I were to order multiple kits are they ok to use all at the same time? Or is it suggested to use on then start on the other? After all I know the body can only get rid of toxins so fast.

    A:

    1. No, the colon herbs won't cause daytime need to defecate as you take them at night before bed.

    2. No, you cannot take all 3 kits simultaneously - too many capsules to take! You can take one at a time, but you can take them back to back.

Q: I was online searching for some natural treatments for hair growth in Black Men when I came across your article. I must say that I believe it was so on point that I decided not to look any further. I'm 44 years of age and started noticing my hair thinning when about 12 years ago. I was one of those that you wrote about in your article chasing a lifestyle that is no longer an interest to me. I did fall into some bad habits that were not good for my health off and on over the past 15 years or so more off than on. My body type I would describe as athletic. I'm tone, and strong when I exercise regularly. I'm about 150lbs @ 5'11". My diet is mostly vegetables but from time to time I feel I have to eat fish or chicken. Not necessarily prepared in the healthiest way I'm sure. I just got out of one of my "on" spells so to speak. Meaning the drinking of beer and cigarettes. I've been smoking and drinking beer now since September 2006 after not having done anything but live healthy for six years before that. As soon as my wife and I came back to the states and started working and runnign again these old destructive habits appeared again in my life. I only blame myself though. Right now my hair and skin suffer from the chemical poisoning from the habits that I just mentioned. I am prepared to take your advice about righteous living to heart and start fresh again. Is there a mild remedy that can work with me to stimulate the re-growth of my hair in the spots where it is balding in that classic balding pattern? I am generally very healthy when I doing right and even now rarely get sick. But my sickness manifest in stress and bad habits to num the pain of having to live this way when don't really want to. I quit the job that I've been working for the past 4 years for that reason and have been blessed to have some time not to grind everyday chasing after money. Now is a crucial time of healing for me, and I must take full advantage of the time. Moderation is in order for whatever you can suggest for me in the way of herbal remedies. I am sure that you can prescribe a simple overall regiment for my overall health based on what I have shared with you with an emphasis on the hair and skin. Again, thank you for writing the article. Call or write. The sooner the better.......Thank You!!

    A:

I would say first detox with the FULL BODY DETOX and get your diet right CONSISTENTLY! Constantly clean your temple! This is key! Next, perform the TOTAL MALE CLEANSE. After this, do a daily regimen of HAIR SKIN NAILS FORMULA, ELECTRIC GREENS CELL FOOD, KHEMETIAN GOLD, and MSM SULFUR. Forgive yourself of past self-inflicted harm! Stop worrying about your hair loss. Start visualizing your hair growing back. If you can see it, you will achieve it! The mind is all and problems and remedies begin in the mind! BTW: we offer phone consultations if you're interested.

Q: I am starting to look at alternative medicines and food choices very seriously now, in fact I recently wrote a research paper on the subject, while reading your article you mentioned Dr Hulda Clark, I goggled her name and got some good and bad reviews. One article in particular caught my attention. If you could would you please read this article and give me your feedback. I am really interested in alternative medicine and I want to teach my kids about the options that they have. I am currently putting together a binder for my kids with things I have read about alternative medicines, detox, the harm that cooked foods(meats in particular) have on the body etc. This article bothered me and before I include any information on treatment from her clinic I wanted some feedback on this article.

    A:

Hulda offers some very good information but she's a bit extreme in my opinion and she relies too much on gadgets for healing rather than the mind, diet, attitude, lifestyle, etc. The choice is up to you, Beloved, whether to include her clinic! From the article, Hulda's clinic looks very frightening! I probably wouldn't include it!
