Why You Should Start A Running Habit

At the peak of my running habit, I was at every event and always in the newest gear. I built an impressive collection of racing bibs and medals along with the incredible stories that went with them. Then I got hurt.

My injury resulted in two knee surgeries and 18 months of physical therapy. By the time I recovered, I had no idea how to find my way back. A week without running turned into a month, then a year and then 10 years. I got married, divorced, married again and had two babies, spending that decade keeping myself so busy with life that I had no time to even think about running, all the while perfecting excuses as to why I was too busy, tired and out of shape to consider going to for a run.

It took 10 years before I was ready to get back out on the road. It was harder than I remembered:hard on the body I’d spent 10 years letting go and hard on the mind that had built up 10 years of excuses. Running is an incredible teacher and in my journey back, I was able to relearn these four truths every new runner should know:

1. Running is honest.

Running is one of the most honest activities you can do. No one can run for you and you uniquely own every single run. Your body will not lie to you — train smartly and efficiently, and your body will respond with gains in speed and endurance. Take shortcuts in training and nutrition, and your body will punish you with injuries and ailments along the way.

Running is a measure of what you put into it. You have no one to congratulate for your successes and no one to be disappointed in when you don’t meet your goals other than yourself.

At the hardest moments, the honesty running demands from you will overwhelm you and probably scare you. But in the sweetest moments, it will take you places inside yourself you never knew existed.

2. There’s a good chance you’re built like a runner, despite what you may think.

I signed up for a race shortly after my reintroduction to running and did well for my age division. When a stranger congratulated me, I thanked him and told him how impressed I was by my running because I wasn’t built like a runner. He smiled and said, “sweetheart, you have two feet, two legs, two lungs and a heart. You are built just like the very best runner.”

Never discredit all your body has to offer you. Never count yourself out.

3. Running is a solo activity that’s built on community.

I love running alone. In fact, it’s one of the only times I’m ever alone in this world, free from the demands of everything else in life. It’s an escape.

However, there’s something undeniable about running alone while simultaneously surrounded by other runners. The running community loves other runners. They welcomed me back, just as they welcome every runner regardless of skill level with stories of encouragement, motivational tales and high-fives at every finish line and at the end of every training run.

4. Running is as simple as putting one foot in front of the other.

Before I started running again, I researched and prepared the most effective running plans I could find. I had a collection of “couch to 5k” and “beginner training” programs I was sure would help ease me back into running. I spent so much time prepping to make the right running decision that a month had gone by and I hadn’t even set foot outside the door. When I realized this, I set all the plans and programs aside, laced up my shoes and never looked back.

The truth is, the simplest plan for a beginner is to put one foot in front of the other and listen to your body along the way.

    Q: My friend was running and heard a pop in his knee. Shortly after, there was tremendous pain and swelling. He also could not extend his leg fully, or bend it backwards past a certain degree.     Q: I've been plagued by uterine fibroids. I've had 6 surgeries and they keep coming back I tried your detox and female detox plan, eating healthy.     Q: Should I start using the Mucus Buster product I have purchased? I did give the ear coning a try, as well as your Ear Oil extract.     Q: For several years, I have a pins and needles feeling all over including burning. I feel light- headed frequently and feels like I would fall to the floor if I don't concentrate on keeping myself steady. I have lower back pain (center) that does not relent.     Q: I am writing you with concern for my father. He is 54 years old, and was just diagnosed with an enlarged heart. He is very worried, and to be honest I am too.     Q: My son is on Concerta 36 mg for ADHD. He was on 56 mg, but I asked that it be lowered because it was taking away from his personality. I did something that I said I'd never do and that was let them medicate him. He started running back and forth which he is not aware of. Doctors say this is a tick. I'm not sure what it is. His behavior started to escalate in the 2nd grade. They were calling me up to the school every other day. Funny thing is that when I would go to the school other teachers would congratulate me on my sons National test scores in reading. His behavior eventually landed him in a special needs school.     Q: This question is in relation to my Multiple Sclerosis problem.     Q: Peace, Dherbs.com. I emailed earlier this year requesting advise on problems I've been having with both my stomach and bladder which are still persisting. Around 5 years ago I noticed that my stomach started to swell until it became fully distended and firm (almost like a round ball). I found this unusual because I have always had a very flat stomach and have always been very active, as well as, tried to maintain a good diet. However after consulting with several western doctors non seems to have a clue as to the cause of the problem. Although during one examination a urologist said he could feel a hard lump just under my right rib cage. I am currently due to have an 'endoscopy' but am running out of options if this procedure does not reveal or identify the problem. Regards my bladder, this problem started between 13-15 years old, I am now 36 years. The main problem is that a majority of the time I am unable to urinate normally.     Q: My mother had a mastectomy about 33 yrs ago and her arm has always been swollen. Now as she becomes older it is getting larger than ever.     Being raw or vegan does not have to be hard or expensive. The most inexpensive food are rice and beans. If you are budget consciense you should gravitate towards those foods. Stach based foods are super cheap. You should check out the book "eating vegan on 4 dollars a day" or any of Dr. Mcdougal's programs. 

    I run an online health/fitness/nutrition coaching program that can be found at www.theveganeffect.com. There you might find your answers. 

    Exercise programs do not have to be expensive either. I am a master at building fitness plans with the minimal of equipment. If all you have is your body weight than I can build you a 90 day plan. The same goes if all you have is a resistance band, exercise ball, dumbells, kettlebell, etc.

    Q: I have problems with my stomach and hemmorids with an bleeding fisher. I was too have an operation but scared of the knife. This has kept me from exercising, lifting wieghts, running, any jaring will hurt and continue. I’ve been in constant pain for about 12 yrs or more.
