A Beginner’s Guide To Essential Oils

The world of essential oils is vast and confusing, especially if you are new to using them. Trying to choose which essential oils to purchase can be like trying to decide which movie to watch or which restaurant to eat at; the choices are endless and you just want to make the right decision. Truth be told, most essential oils have incredible healing properties, so there isn’t a wrong choice, but there are essential oils that are more versatile than others.

Because essential oils have risen to popularity over the years, many people with social platforms feel that they know everything about dosage and usage. Unfortunately, a high percentage of these people have minimal experience with essential oils and suggest practices that may be harmful to the body. Aromatic plant medicine involves some of nature’s most potent powers and pairings, and the right steps need to be taken to reap the health benefits.

How To Choose The Right Oils

The first step is identifying the problem in order to figure out the best essential oil for the task at hand. Perhaps you are looking to relax more before bed, or maybe you have lower back pain. There is no “one size fits all” for aromatherapy because it is a personal science. One must also understand the facts of essential oils, i.e. sources and price, packaging, the benefits, side effects, and whether or not there are potential contradictions.

Don’t Buy Cheap Oils

Whatever you do, do not purchase cheap essential oils. Unethical sourcing of these oils is a common practice, and you have to pay attention to the name, whether or not the oil is synthetic, and gimmicky claims, for example, “therapeutic grade” or “certified pure,” both of which do not exist because there is no scientific body that regularly tests the purity of essential oils. Don’t purchase lavendin by mistake, when the original intent was to purchase lavender essential oil.

Lavender Essential Oil

This may be the most common essential oil, and it is typically used to promote natural relaxation and healthier sleep. People with high stress levels or anxiety are encouraged to use lavender essential oil. It is best used in a diffuser to fill the room with its aroma, but you can also put a few drops under your pillow to promote sounder sleep.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint essential oil is known for its versatility. It can be used in DIY household cleaning products, DIY beauty products, gardening, and various balms. The energizing properties of peppermint essential oil make it a great afternoon pick-me-up, especially if you dab a drop behind each ear. If you have a stuffy nose, you can put about 20 drops of peppermint oil in a warm bath to decrease sinus congestion.

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus essential oil is derived from any of the genus eucalyptus species. This oil has been used since ancient times to help prevent colds, boost the immune system, and improve mental clarity. If you are feeling congested, drop a few drops in a bowl of hot water and place your face over the bowl. To create a miniature steam room for your face, cover the bowl and your head with a towel. Inhale slowly and deeply for five minutes.

Tea Tree Oil

Not only does tea tree oil smell wonderful, but it also is one of the most versatile essential oils out there. It is commonly used in essential oil blends, natural beauty products, incense, and candles. A beginner in the world of essential oils should absolutely obtain tea tree oil. Make sure not to directly apply it on the skin because it is very strong. Dilute this oil with a carrier oil for topical application.

Frankincense Essential Oil

Most essential oils inform you of the source in the name, but there is no frankincense plant. Frankincense essential oil is derived from the Boswellia carterii or Boswellia sacara tree. This essential oil is commonly used in aromatherapy because of the stress-relieving properties. If you want to keep your skin healthy, the antibacterial and antiseptic properties in frankincense essential oil are what you need. Mix a few drops with some jojoba oil to increase absorption.

The essential oils in this article are some of the best starter oils. As you familiarize yourself with the health properties, blends, and usage of these oils, you may benefit from obtaining other oils like cinnamon oil, wild orange oil, rosemary oil, myrrh oil, lemon oil, and ginger oil.
