How Chicory Root Can Replace Your Morning Cup Of Joe

chicory-root-coffee

While it has gained popularity in recent years, chicory root has been around for many centuries. People who are trying to reduce their caffeine intake often turn to chicory root, but it is more than just a coffee replacement. A cup of hot chicory root tastes just like a fresh cup of coffee, but that’s not the only thing that should impress you. It has been known to improve digestive health, reduce inflammation, and stabilize blood sugar levels.

What Is Chicory Coffee?

The chicory plant belongs to the dandelion family and has a fuzzy stem with light purple flowers. The origination of replacing coffee with chicory root dates back to 1800s, when there was a coffee shortage in France. Before that, chicory root was brewed into a tea and used for its medicinal properties. People with jaundice, gout, rheumatism, or an enlarged liver commonly consumed chicory root tea.

One thing to note about chicory root is that it is caffeine-free. People have classically ground up 2 tablespoons of chicory root and steeped it in one cup of water. In present day, chicory root powder is readily available. It is a great coffee replacement and can deliver the following benefits.

Liver Protection:

Chicory root has an incredible ability to protect the liver against possible toxicity and free radical damage. According to a 2015 medical review, the natural antioxidants in chicory root were able to boost the body’s defense system and simultaneously cleanse the liver.

Decreased Inflammation:

As you may know by now, chronic inflammation has been linked to the development of diabetes, certain cancers, and heart disease. Several studies have found that chicory root may possess anti-inflammatory properties. Other studies have concluded that chicory root’s polyphenols can help decrease inflammation levels, but more research needs to be done on humans for concrete findings.

Stress Reliever:

If you are easily stressed or have excess levels of cortisol in the body, caffeine can only worsen the issue. In fact, a 2006 study found that repeated caffeine consumption combined with high stress levels significantly increased cortisol levels. Because chicory root does not contain caffeine, it may be the coffee replacement you need to reduce stress and normalize cortisol levels.

Gut Health Hero:

Chicory root is rich in a prebiotic known as oligosaccharide-enriched inulin, also referred to as prebiotic fiber. It is easily fermented by healthy bacteria in the gut and it contributes to the healthy growth of probiotics. Inulin, or chicory root fiber, is commonly found in probiotic supplements! It is best to not go overboard with chicory root because it can lead to excess fermentation, which can trigger gas or upset stomach.

It May Not Be For You:

We understand that you may be looking for a coffee alternative, but chicory root is not for everyone. Due to the aforementioned gas and upset stomach side effects, some people avoid chicory root. You should absolutely avoid it if you are allergic to ragweed or birch pollen. Additionally, chicory root is not recommended for pregnant women because it could trigger menstrual bleeding and miscarriage.

Chicory root can be a great coffee substitute, especially if you are looking to cut down on caffeine consumption. Weigh the pros and cons and try it out; you might like it a lot! And one last thing…the featured picture of this article is what a cup of chicory root coffee looks like.

Q: I have yellow dock, and bradock root, in root formula. How should I prepare these herbs?

Q: Hey herbalist, so I have been doing a lot of research on caffeine, and the benefits and harms of it. I am looking for some added information about the differences between the caffeine found naturally in coffee or tea, and the kind found in pure caffeine pills. I have heard that the pills are much more harmful, but have not been able to find proof of why. With the exception of "its made in a lab, therefore it must be worse". If you could shed some light on the matter, I would greatly appreciate it! Just one more question. I have read that caffeine blocks the re-uptake of glutamate. This can cause glutamate toxicity (resulting in dead brain cells), but I am skeptical as to how often this occurs. Will that happen if one takes just 200-mg of caffeine? Is it for the chronic caffeine users who drink 6 cups of coffee a day for 10 years? Thanks so much for your time and effort! looking forward to some knowledge!

    A:

Nature does not make caffeine or any substance in mono-structured form, including caffeine. Caffeine consumed by itself is harmful (a la caffeine pills -- nature does not produce caffeine pills). Caffeine pills are INORGANIC and thus not absorbed by the body (the cells). Bio-caffeiene from plant sources is ORGANIC and thus absorbable. Organic substances can be absorbed through the cells. Inorganic substances cannot. Inorganic caffeine blocks reuptake of glutamate, and that's another reason why synthetic caffeine is harmful. Organic caffeine does not block reuptake of glutamate.

Q: We have ordered The Children's Pancreas Kit for my nine year old daughter. My daughter was diagnosed a diabetic last June. We started giving her the 6th formula. The issue we have now, is formula 4 which contains Licorice root. My Daughter is allergic Licorice root". Can we order the kit without Licorice root?

    A:

Unfortunately we don't customize formulas. What you can do is find an extract of Cascara Sagrada, or Senna leaf, and supplement with that product. Just make sure it is alcohol free! You could even just give the child prune juice (perhaps diluted with water) in place of Formula #6.

Q: Recently my dentist said I need a root canal. When he describe the procedure, I was shocked! Can you help? The tooth is located in the rear left-side-lower jaw.

    A:

Dental situations are different from degenerative diseases. You can't take an herb to replace dental work. What exactly did the dentist say? You may not even need the root canal surgery.

Q: I want to know what is the difference in using the Wild Alum Root Powder for douching in reference to my prolapsed uterus problem vs. using the FEMALE HEALTH TEA Product that you sell. I would like to know so that I am able to know why and when to use a particular herbal product that will be better for my situation. Your clarity on this for my education will greatly appreciate. Thanks for your time and do have a wonderful day/evening upon receipt of this email. Thanks again for any clarity you can provide so I will better understand why you suggested and advised me to use the Female Health Tea.

    A:

There's really no difference: it's just that wild alum is one herb (and a very good) and the tea I recommended has more herbs which have an affinity for female organs. Both can be used or one over the other.

Q: I commonly get sinuses headaches as a result of congestion. I have a sinus drip which is the root cause of this and as a result I am suppose to take sinus medicines daily. I recently did the 10 day express cleanse during which time I did not have the issue with congestion. Which individual product can be used to resolve my congestion issues?

    A:

The formula's in the 10 Day Cleanse didn't specifically help with your congestion issue, but more so the adjusted diet did. Eliminating certain foods from your diet and eating foods that provide benefits helped decrease the amount of mucus and inflammation in your body. It would be best for you to do the Respiratory Cleanse and Regimen as this specifically helps recondition the lungs and helping with sinus issues.

Q: I've had a bump on my gum for nearly 20 years. It is most likely an abscess, developed from a childhood injury. On occasion, it swells, and becomes slightly painful to the touch. A few weeks after, it shrinks again. Is there a natural alternative to a root canal?

    A:

I never heard of a root canal surgery for a gum boil or abscess. Gum boils usually go away on their own. They are due to a mucus-forming diet. Consider going mostly raw foods (60%), and vegan (40%). Gargle with hydrogen peroxide and water. Read my article "Oil Pulling" and start performing this exercise. Brush with our herbal Tooth Powder.

Q: Can I drink coffee with caffeine while on 21day cleans?

A: No, you cannot consume any kind of coffee or caffeine while cleansing. One of the main purposes of the cleanse, is to give your body a break from the things it's accustom to receiving; letting your body function on it's own. It's common for people to get proper sleep at night, have energy, but still have a need to consume coffee or some type of caffeine. It's important for your body to produce natural energy. You can consume herbal tea's while cleansing, Green Tea provides the most energy. The Dangers of Drinking Coffee - https://dherbs.com/news/4844/4669/The-Dangers-of-Drinking-Coffee/d,ai.html

Q: I have a question about the "Nerves" Supplement. How do I take this 3X per day without getting sleepy? Since the main ingredient is Valerian root. Do I take all 3 capsules before bed time to avoid this, and does it matter whether I take all 3 at the same time? I'm confused since one of the reviews speaks of taking it as a sleep aid.

    A:

Simply take all 3 capsules before bed time, or one capsules every 3-4 hours. It's only a sleep aid if the capsules are taken before bedtime.

Q: I have a good dentist, that cares much about the health and service of her patients. The only thing is that, it's their practice that before they can do anything on you (ex. fill cavities, root canal or anything) you have to take antibiotics an hour before the appointment. This is for prevention of any infections during, or after the procedure. I read the article about antibiotics, and know how harmful it is for your body. I am soon going need to have an implant procedure done. I want to know if there is an alternative to antibiotics or something I can take to be ready for the surgery in oppose to taking the antibiotics for prevention of infections?

    A:

Most people opt for the antibiotics, and then after the dental work just consume carbon (activated charcoal). Antibiotics options would include Echinacea-Goldenseal extract, and Candida Buster formula which is 100% anti-biotical in nature. These products are all available in our store. Peace and Love!

Q: I need some advice on whether I am taking the right herbs to balance my hormones. I have a mustache and a lot of hair on my face and acne. So I take saw palmetto for that. Also, I had an ovary removed about 2 years ago. Since then I have a problem with vaginal dryness and very low sex drive. I am always moody and irritated by everything.
