How To Avoid Buying Junk Food While Grocery Shopping

black-man-grocery-shopping

As you peruse the aisles of a grocery store, you are hit by an onslaught of unhealthy processed foods. First of all, entering the middle aisles of most grocery stores is mistakes one, two, and three of your grocery shopping mission. Aside from the cleaning, kitchenware, and household products, the middle aisles of grocery stores typically contain all of the processed, unhealthy foods. Consistently buying and consuming those foods could slingshot you into high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol.

For a lot of Americans, grocery shopping isn’t something they get enthused about. In fact, only 27% of Americans cook at home on a daily basis. The rest tend to choose inexpensive fast food or takeout to reduce the stress and hassle that comes with preparing food or going to the grocery store. When a lot of people go grocery shopping, they get enticed by the deals. Most junk foods are typically on sale or have special bundle combos. This can derail a healthy shopping experience. To help you stick to your healthy food mission in a grocery store, use the tips below.

Go In With A Plan:

Make a list of what you need and don’t veer from the list. The moment you decide to go off-script, so to speak (unless you are buying more veggies!), all hell can break loose. Take five minutes before you shop to write down what you need. It is also recommended to plan your meals for the week in order to avoid buying unnecessary, unhealthy foods.

Eat Before You Shop:

Going to the grocery store on an empty stomach is like kissing your health goals goodbye. Statistics show that you are more likely to purchase unhealthy foods if you go to the store when you are hungry. Because your brain is actively telling your body to obtain food, you tend to buy quick and easy meals that are processed, sugary, and filled with unhealthy carbohydrates. Eat before you go to shop healthily.

Shop The Perimeter:

As we mentioned before, the inner aisles are filled with all of the unhealthy foods. While some unhealthy items exist in the perimeter, the foods that typically line those shelves are fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and meats and dairy products, although we aren’t fond of the last two we mentioned. The main thing is that you’ll avoid the excess sodium and processed ingredients that are plentiful in the middle aisles.

Stock Up On The Basics:

When it comes to cooking, you need to have certain items in your kitchen at all times. You don’t want to start your meals from scratch every time you go to the grocery store. By this, we mean you don’t want to keep re-purchasing the basics. Some of the best non-perishable basics include extra virgin olive oil, raw apple cider vinegar, coconut oil, quinoa, brown rice, nuts and seeds, tahini, almond butter, steel cut oats, raw honey, raw agave, and liquid aminos. When you buy these items in bulk, you’ll have what you need and be more organized in the kitchen.

Q: What Are Some Natural Sweet Treats (Junk Foods) I can Consume? Under free will you can consume what you like, but healthier products are best. You will find plenty of "healthier" snack, treat, and junk foods at good health food stores such as Whole Foods Market, PCC Natural Food Stores, Erewhon, Trader Joes, Natural Grocers, New Frontiers, etc. Just make sure to abstain from salt, sugar, and other harmful chemicals in the products you buy. Q: I am trying to stop ingesting unhealthy foods. I am trying to get rid of my large fibroids. In one of your articles you mentioned about the uterus. I am curious as to what happens to the uterus when the doctor performs an hysterectomy? Also, is there a daily regimen that I should follow to rid myself of the toxins in my body? Is there anything that I can take to get rid of my cravings for sweets? (I am not diabetic).

    A:

The Full Body Cleanse is a great way to help rid yourself of toxins and naturally heal your body from adverse conditions and symptoms that are affecting your health.

Q: I am thinking about purchasing your Full Body Cleanse program, but I am concerned about one thing... too much weight lost. I am already thin, and do not want to fade away as I think three weeks on nothing but raw fruits and veggies may leave me looking sick. What is your suggestion? Are there any foods high in protein I can eat while cleansing? Also, thank you so much for your wisdom and insight. I listen to you on Blake Radio, and one of the reasons why I am buying your product is because you speak with so much passion. There are a lot of cleaning products out there, and to be perfectly honest, I have been so overwhelmed by the products out there that I ended up not buying anything. At any rate, thank you for your time and let please let me know if you have any suggestions on keeping up my weight while I cleanse.

    A:

If you are concerned about getting enough food while maintaining a raw foods diet over a 20-day period, make sure you are consuming plenty of healthy fats to keep you full and satiated. Avocado, Coconut Cream or Oil, Raw Nuts, Raw Seeds, are great sources of nutrients and healthy fats that will keep you from losing weight.

To get the protein you need, you can try making a smoothie with Vegan Protein Powder.

Q: I read the food chart for the FULL BODY DETOX. Is it ok to eat the cream of wheat while detoxing? I'm confused because on the food chart it mentioned alot of different foods, but it tell you the best thing to do is a all raw food diet such as salads and fruit, smoothies... I also plan to do the ANTI-VIRAL CLEANSE AND REGIMEN right after the FULL BODY DETOX and that requires a all raw food diet as well. So that means 2 months of strictly raw foods right? :( Its tough but I am determined too get rid of this hsv1 & hsv 2

    A:

I suggest you read the article â€WHAT IS RAW FOODS†as it will help you to understand what to eat and what not to eat on the FULL BODY DETOX. Yes, all raw foods for 2 months (to the best of your ability, Beloved). YOU CAN DO IT, BELOVED! Did you read our "GENITAL HERPES" article?

Q: Thank you for always answering my questions. I have about two more. Okay, I'm currently living overseas where I'm limited on raw fresh foods (vegetables and fruits). I want to do the detox but I'm concerned that I won't have everything as far as raw food to be successful. I have access to basics (apples, oranges, bananas, tomatoes, avocados, melons, lettuce, cabbage, bean spouts, carrots, celery, peppers, green beans, peas, bagged nuts,) but nothing exotic by any means. Then I was told to safely eat some of the food in the local economy that we should wash it with a 5% bleach solution (is that safe...and if on the detox I'm thinking that would be a no go). Two questions?Given the mentioned availability of raw foods could I be able to successfully complete the detox (I don't have an issue with eating the same things over and over again) and two what can I do to clean local produce so that its safe for consumption? Apparently part of the issue is that they use human feces to fertilize. Thank you for your time and I look forward to your response

    A:

Yes, it seems you have enough raw food available to you to complete the cleanse.

In order to clean local produce, rinse thoroughly with apple cider vinegar to "disinfect" it. If apple cider vinegar is unavailable, just use water.

YOU WILL BE EATING ALL RAW FOODS. PLEASE READ OUR ARTICLE â€WHAT IS RAW FOODS†LOCATED ON OUR SITE UNDER ARTICLES. RAW FOODS IS RAW FRUITS, VEGETABLES, SEEDS, AND NUTS. NOTHING COOKED! Q: I was wondering in your list you include foods that are classified as acidic (AC). I thought we were to avoid acidic foods so we can stay alkaline or do we need some acidic foods? I am guessing that there is a better explanation but please let me know. My partner and I have changed our diet after watching your videos and Dr Sebi’s video and we are very curious about this.

    A:

I TRUST YOU READ MY ARTICLE THAT COVERS THESE FOODS BELOW. BELOVED, ACID FOODS ARE NOT BAD (UNHEALTHY) AND IN FACT YOU NEED SOME ACID FOODS TO BALANCE OUT THE DIET. THE PROBLEM IS WITH ACID-FORMING FOODS (COOKED FOODS: MEAT, DAIRY, REFINED STARCHES, REFINED GRAINS, ETC.). SO THERE'S A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ACID FOODS AND ACID-FORMING FOODS. AND YOU DO KNOW THAT MOST OF WHAT WE ARE EATING IS HYBRIDIZED, RIGHT? WE ARE NOT IN CONTROL OF WHAT WE ARE EATING TODAY. EVEN DR. SEBI EATS HYBRIDIZED FOODS. HE CAN'T HELP IT. WE DON'T CONTROL THE FOOD SUPPLY. REMEMBER, MA'AM: BALANCE IN ALL THINGS. SOME ACID FOODS ARE GOOD AND NECESSARY BUT ACID-FORMING FOODS ARE UNHEALTHY AS THEY CREATE MUCUS IN THE BODY.

Oh yes, another thing, have you heared of a herb called "Silver Shield" She recommended it for my daughters ezcema. She said that it will cure it!!!!

Q: I would like to know if you have any herbal product that tightened and strengthens a dropped uterus and cervix in the vagina? Is there any product that I can douche with to tighten this area and problem. I called a local herb shop that I have purchased herbs for years before buying from dherbs and the owner said she has Wild Alum Root Powder that I can douche with to help tighten the uterus and etc., but I wanted to know if you have a good herbal formula product to douche and one that I can take. I am trying to avoid sugery. I have started having back pains in my lower back areas that extend to my right and left sides and periodic tummy pains which the nurse at the clinic where I go to be checked said this is generally the symptoms when a woman has a lapsed or dropped uterus and cervix. This also causes bladder control problems as well. Please tell me what you advise and what products that you believe will help me with these issues specifically, the dropped uterus and cervix problems. I have already purchase #3 products from you about a month ago: The CARDIO-VASCULAR FORMULA, the COLON FORMULA and the TUMOR BUSTER EXTRACT for the tumor that the doctors say is in one of my adrenal glands. I have had some good results from the Cardiovascular product. in helping me keep my blood pressure down.

    A:

For prolapsed uterus I recommend that you first perform the FULL BODY DETOX followed by the TOTAL WOMAN CLEANSE. You can use our FEMALE HEALTH TEA as a douche solution and douche with it. After your cleanses you should take 3 capsules daily of our ADRENALIZER FORMULA.

Q: My doctor prescripts for my condition DILTIAZEM CD 180MG twice a day; I check my pressure 3 times a day normal reading are 141/80. I don't want to take a pill rest the rest of my life. Q: I am starting to look at alternative medicines and food choices very seriously now, in fact I recently wrote a research paper on the subject, while reading your article you mentioned Dr Hulda Clark, I goggled her name and got some good and bad reviews. One article in particular caught my attention. If you could would you please read this article and give me your feedback. I am really interested in alternative medicine and I want to teach my kids about the options that they have. I am currently putting together a binder for my kids with things I have read about alternative medicines, detox, the harm that cooked foods(meats in particular) have on the body etc. This article bothered me and before I include any information on treatment from her clinic I wanted some feedback on this article.

    A:

Hulda offers some very good information but she's a bit extreme in my opinion and she relies too much on gadgets for healing rather than the mind, diet, attitude, lifestyle, etc. The choice is up to you, Beloved, whether to include her clinic! From the article, Hulda's clinic looks very frightening! I probably wouldn't include it!

Q: I just came across this information, and I am VERY CONFUSED! I have recently come into consciousness about my health, origins, spirituality, etc. I am an avid reader of your site, and I am preparing to purchase your Full Body Detox. But, PLEASE TELL ME IF THIS IS TRUE: That on December 31, 2009, we (as a people) cannot buy any herbs, nutrients, without the prescription of a doctor (Codex)? I've been reading many articles, but due to brain overload it's very hard for me to comprehend. Does this mean there will be no more Dherbs.com, or health food stores selling herbs? Also, if you happen to write an article on this can you please let me know about an "urban legend" that there was a "world" meeting among leaders, and Oprah was the only black woman in attendance, and that legislation like Codex was brought into the forefront to decrease the Earth's population. After reading some articles, I could see a connection with this "urban legend", when one stated that Codex could possibly kill 3 billion people. I know you have mentioned it briefly in a Q&A on your site as well as an article on Hybrid Foods, but I am seeking your wisdom and commentary due to your ability to explain in layman's terms. I hope you can answer my questions as myself and many others look to your site for Overstanding.

    A:

Not true! Don't waste your time worrying about Codex A. Think positive, Beloved! The urban legend is laughable. Many people just like to think negative, so they create negativity in their life. That has nothing to do with Codex A, but their own thinking! You can relax, Beloved!

    A:

Sure! I'd recommend: High Blood Pressure: CARDIO-VASCULAR FORMULA and CIRCUL-AID FORMULA, High Cholesterol: CHOLESTEROL BUSTER and INTESTINAL JANITORIntestinal Janitor. However, it would be best to first perform the FULL BODY DETOX before taking these formulas.

Q: I am currently doing the Full Body Cleanse and my "meal" is typically a salad. To keep it interesting, I add different vegetables and fruits to it. I am not creative enough to think of other meals that I can possibly eat that consists of only raw foods. Any suggestions. I am struggling and I have two weeks to go.

    A:

A typical detox raw food program looks like this

    Breakfast:

Green smoothie: 1 1/2- 2 cups water / 1 cup greens / 3-5 medium pieces of fruit blended.

(see "Green Smoothie Revolution" Boutenko for more info)

    Bridge: 2-3 medium sized fruits

    Lunch:

Raw Wraps: collard greens as wraps/ tomato, cucumber, bell pepper / fresh herbs / Sauce (salsa/tahini/guacamole/ etc))

    Bridge:2-3 medium pieces of fruit

    Dinner:

Raw pasta: Zuchini sliced with a potato peeler / veggies / Homemade pasta sauce made in blender / sprouted quinoa or legumes

Snack: Sorbet: Blended frozen fruit in a blender

Q: I am on my 3rd day of the fully body cleansing. I am definitely doing this to lose weight. I am a 52 year old, black, Christian, wife, mother to 21 and 14 year old girls, legal secretary who is 450 lbs. I am to the point now where if I don't do this I'm going to be housebound. I can barely move some days that is why I started this because I feel so unhealthy. I have a question about the nuts. I got all gun-ho and ordered $135.00 worth of organic nuts from nuts.com. I got raisins, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, walnuts, pecans, pistachios and cashews and mixed them all up together (well I purchased 2 lbs of each but I only mixed up 1 lb of each together). Anyway, I was reading about how much calories are in nuts. Should I not pay attention to that because I was consuming a lot of calories in the first place or do I have to watch how many nuts I eat? I have put some nuts in a sandwich bags and basically filled it up and that is supposed to be my nuts ration for the day. I am also eating fruits and vegetables. So far the fruit have been grapes, grapefruit, red apples, pears, green apples and bananas. The vegetables have all been in a salad: tomatoes, celery spinach leaves, carrots, mixed in balsamic vinaigrette. I only ate the salad Monday night all the other times I have just eaten the fruit and nuts. I am also consuming approximately 75-100 oz of water. Sorry I’m long winded I just wanted you to get the entire picture.

    A:

Thanks for the question, I can definitely help you.

I am currently writing an eBook for www.dherbs.com called "Losing weight the healthy way." I have been a weight loss counselor for many years. I am also a health coach, personal trainer, bodymind nutritionist, and a vegan lifestyle coach.

When it comes to weight loss most programs want you to lose weight to get healthy. My mindset is to get healthy and lose weight.

In my health/fitness/nutrition coaching program www.theveganeffect.com I use a lowfat/high carb/ high raw/ nutrient dense/ high alkaline diet to achieve long term weight loss success. So far I am 100 percent in getting clients long lasting weight loss. If you are interested in my program please fill out the health history form on the side of the web page. We could have a free 1 hour initial consultation over skype to see how I can best help you.

Nuts are best kept to a minimum if you use them at all. Nuts are extremely high in fat and have the opposite omega 3- omega 6 ratio that is optimal for health. Seeds are best as far as ratios are concerned. Also nuts are truly easy to over eat and cause your nutrient ratios to be off.

A healthy vegan diet is a high raw fruitarian diet.

    Example:

Breakfast: green smoothie. (500-1000 calories of fruits blended with a handful of greens and water)

Bridge: Dates and strawberries (500 calories)

Lunch: Salad with low sugar fruits (cucumber, tomato, squash, bell peppers) topped with fruit, beans, psuedo grains,

    Bridge: 2-3 apples

Dinner: Raw wraps (collard greens) with low sugar fruit and tahini

    Snack: Sorbet

    Hope this helps

Q: Greetings & Namaste, First, thank you for being U-activated! So many potential energies unable to convert into kinetic activities because of our Earthly baggage(s). Personally, I haven't found the right formula to keep my beautiful curves, which is the major reason I am not vegan/raw now. In my perfect world, I'd have a great-tasting, non-dairy,wheat & gluten source of protein, juiced exotic veggie/fruit smoothies, yummy raw nuts/raisins, and absolutely no meat- the fountain of youth, literally, running thru my body! As i'm sure the cognitive wheels of your expertise are spiraling ready solutions, I ask that you also factor in social-economic status, and workout regiment. From my perspective, the price of health food is aggressively over-inflated compared to the affordability of processed and junk foods; add to that a general inaccessibility to the impoverished & disenfranchised, and dysfunctional eating psychologies impregnating entire families (for generations). I prefer high energy, high impact, anaerobic & weight-lifting training activities. So, you can see a petite person's dilemma. Thanks so much for your time and thoughts. Ms. Tiffany

Being raw or vegan does not have to be hard or expensive. The most inexpensive food are rice and beans. If you are budget consciense you should gravitate towards those foods. Stach based foods are super cheap. You should check out the book "eating vegan on 4 dollars a day" or any of Dr. Mcdougal's programs.

I run an online health/fitness/nutrition coaching program that can be found at www.theveganeffect.com. There you might find your answers.

Exercise programs do not have to be expensive either. I am a master at building fitness plans with the minimal of equipment. If all you have is your body weight than I can build you a 90 day plan. The same goes if all you have is a resistance band, exercise ball, dumbells, kettlebell, etc.

If you need any advice or have specific questions you should check out my website and message me there.
