Make Fitness A Family Affair For Family Health & Fitness Day

Get the bikes out of the garage, dust off the old roller blades, pump up the soccer ball, or prepare for an epic game of tag because September 28th is National Family Health & Fitness Day. Celebrated annually on the last Saturday in September, this day was established by the Health and Information Resource Center in 1996 to encourage families to engage in physical activity. No matter the skillset or level of fitness, all families should participate. There’s no reason for anybody to be observing from the sidelines!

 

The U.S. Surgeon General’s Report on Physical Activity found that Americans, specifically those between the ages of 12-21, are not as active as they should be. Jennifer Hopper, M.S., ACSM-HFC-CET, director of Employee Wellness, Worklife and Fitness at Piedmont, stresses that lack of physical activity in children and teens increases their risk of developing type 2 diabetes. To decrease the risk of diabetes, children only require 15 minutes of daily physical activity, while adults require 30 minutes or more.

 

While it is possible to enroll children in after school activities, studies show that they are more likely to want to play outdoors when the entire family participates. Most family fitness activities are free and fun for all ages, and we have a few recommendations to get the whole family involved. They can be done in the backyard or out in nature. Rake Some Leaves Together:

The leaves are changing with the fall season and they are falling off branches and into yards at a rapid rate. Don’t dread the rake session or hire a gardener; rather, make it a family event to clean up the yard. You can even build piles of leaves and have your children run through the piles before you scoop them into the trash.

 

Go Hiking:

The long, warm days of summer are fading into the distance, but early fall provides the perfect weather for hiking. Perhaps there is a nearby state park, waterfall, or canyon that you want to explore. Don your hiking shoes and head to the trail. Make a game for your children by tasking them with finding the best hiking sticks for all members of the family.

 

Take Part In Fall Festivities:

Fall typically offers a variety of festive events in many communities. Take the family to an apple orchard and have a fun day of picking apples straight from the trees. Alternatively, head to a pumpkin patch and walk around to choose the best pumpkin, which you will inevitably carve as Halloween approaches. Some of those pumpkin patches even have corn mazes set up, so head in and explore.

 

Go For A Bike Ride:

Biking is one of the most underrated forms of physical activity, but it is light on the joints and a great cardiovascular exercise. Explore your neighborhood on a bicycle, head to a local park with a parking lot, or outdoor basketball court and set up cones to create a bike course.

 

Move For A Cause:

One of the best ways to exercise while simultaneously doing a good deed is to participate in a 5K charity run. There are races suited for all levels of fitness and some are themed, making them extra exciting for the kids.

    Q: A family member has Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) which effect the muscles, he doesn't speak clearly, he has to eat using a peg tube.. he is afraid to walk because he thinks he is going to fall.     Q: Two months ago I used your Full Body Detox, and got fabulous results. I also did The Total Woman Cleanse three weeks after the detox, and got fabulous results from both products. My family, and I have been vegan for the past eight months, and before that vegetarians. Now, I am still experiencing pimples, and some fungi which looks like a kind of wring worms, but much smaller apparing on my body. Not just mine, but other members of the family as well. I gave the children, and my husband their Full Body Detox, as well, and I have even bought the Oz Oil to treat this. I really don't know what to do right now, this stuff is spreading on my body, but I have a very possive attitude with it still.     Q: I have come across several sites that list quinoa as being in the fruit family but this is very confusing to me since it appears to be a grain. My husband uses it as rice and cereal substitute and I am just wondering if it is mucus forming.

    I can assure you herbs do not cause what you are experiencing. A bug may be doctor's lingo for any healing crisis. However, a bug is not a form of healing crisis. If you would have suffered from anything herbally, those doctors would have told you. A bug is a so-called virus (in doctor's lore) but viruses do not exist. Virus means "poison" as in "poisonous blood" and herbs do not poison the blood but simply remove poisons from the blood. If your family wants to legitimately blame Dherbs, get a blood analysis done. But again, the doctors have told you that you developed a bug. They didn't say you had an allergic reaction to anything.     YOU CAN HEAL FROM MOLES! CONSIDER THE Following: the following is a healing account of a mole by my good and dear friend Paris Chatman. This is my story and how I healed my face of my mole. I developed a small growth in 1997 on the left side of my face. Over the years it slowly increased in size and until recently it reached 0.25 inches. I had been on and off a healthy diet for over ten years. I could not ever commit to 100% good health, which I felt deep down, was the root cause of why my pathologies either remained or kept returning.     Q: As a diet controlled diabetic I question being able to change my diet(to raw/live foods) while I keep up the same rigorous exercise and fitness program without suffering from too many low readings of which I am prone.The program has gotten me off insulin.I also have diverticulitis and seeds and nuts have been a problem for me in the past. Any suggestions?

    Thanks for the question. I hope this helps. If you are under a doctors supervision I am forbidden to give you any advice that may alter a doctors advice. They have little to no nutritional training but their word trumps everyone. 

    What I can do is point you in the direction of programs getting the results you desire. Those three are Dr. Neil M. Barnards "program for preventing and reversing diabetes" (DVD,book), Dr. Gabriel Cousins "Raw in 30" program (DVD) and "There is a cure for diabetes" (book), and recently The Gerson Therapy has released a program for diabetes (book). 

    The common denominator in all three programs is a low fat vegan diet. The differences are that Barnard's program is a cooked vegan diet while Cousins' and Gerson's program are raw. All get results but the raw programs have a 75 percent success rate in 1 month where as the cooked version of Barnards get results in 6 months. Big difference.

    I have gotten people off of insulin in around 2 months using a high raw and low fat vegan diet. I use no oils and nuts. I do encourage avocados and seeds for fats. However, with diverticulitis you must avoid seeds until your body repairs itself through a high alkaline diet. I suggest getting a bulk of your fats from avocados and coconut. I usually limit myself to a half an avocados worth of fat a day. 

    I would look into those books first and if you are under a doctors supervision bring those materials to him/her and see what they say.

    You can normalize blood sugar levels by drinking cinnamon, licorice, and Stevia herbal tea (daily). Stay away from synthetic sugars too! Drink plenty of vegetable juice as well!

    Q: I recommend this site to all because it has helped me in so many ways, that I was hoping it may be of help to my 11 year old niece. She is really shy towards others, even at school. To the point where last year, it started affecting her school work. Because, at school you have to interact with others, as well as participate in class. At home with family she's active, sociable, and lot's of fun. When she gets around others she shuts down, believe it or not. I was talking with her mother, my sister and she realized that we was that same way aswell growing up. I don't want her to go through life like that, if there is a way to help her. My sister mentioned pills. Since I have found your site there is no way that I'll have her popping man made pills, when there are herbs that are safe. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
