Pastor Hosea Collins stood before his congregation in the City of Refuge Church in Gardena with an “official weigher” at his side and a scale at his feet. Standing in front of his entire church, he felt exposed. He looked out to the faces of people, and with a breath, stepped up onto the scale.
Pastor Hosea’s weigh-in that day was a part of a “Biggest Loser”-style competition in his church to raise money for his youth group’s summer mission trips. Year after year, he would pretend to get really into the effort, hoping to stir his congregation into a competitive frenzy and raise more money. Despite his boasting, however, he never really took the competition seriously — that is until he stepped on the scale.
A native of Louisiana, Pastor Hosea had been obese for the better part of twenty years, but as he stood there, looking at his weight—up six pounds from last year’s competition—his thoughts flashed to his wife and three children. What would happen to them if something happened to him? He was the sole breadwinner for his family, and at 351 pounds, bread had become the least of his worries.
The weigh-in was a wake-up call. Then and there, Pastor Hosea decided 2015 was going to be different— that he was actually going to try to be the Biggest Loser, to win the competition. He stepped off the scale with new-found resolve, but a question lingered. How was he going to lose all that weight?
The answer came from one of his parishioners. She greeted Hosea in the lobby at the end of the service and suggested he do a detox. “What good would it do you to put brand new oil in your car, and not change the filter?” she asked him.
Her reasoning made sense and since he didn’t really know what else to do, he accepted her offer to buy him a detox, but not just any detox. A few days later, she presented him with the Dherbs 20 Day Full Body Cleanse.
The Dherbs 20 Day Full Body Cleanse
The Pastor had never done a cleanse before, but he was anxious to get started. Flipping through the guidebook, he soon read up on the Cleanse’s dietary restrictions. For twenty days he wouldn’t be able to eat meat, dairy, or anything cooked. Instead, he could only eat raw fruits, veggies, and nuts.
“Raw fruits and vegetables for 20 days?! Who does that? It’s bad enough you want me to eat vegetables — which I hate — but you want me to eat ‘em raw?! For 20 days? I’m like, ‘God, are you serious?’” Despite his reluctance, he wasn’t about to give up before he’d even started. He was, after all, determined to be the Biggest Loser.
“The first few days, I thought I would die,” he recalled. Not because he was struggling to eat veggies, but because he prided himself in being a “meatatarian. I’d never eaten a meal without meat. Like, who does that?” Though it was difficult, he didn’t waver. He just kept repeating his motivational mantra “If you want something you’ve never had, you’ve got to be willing to do something you’ve never done.” It was in this spirit that he hunkered down and decided that he would succeed. “If you want something you’ve never had, you’ve got to be willing to do something you’ve never done.”
By Day 3, he started seeing results. “I didn’t remember the last time I had felt that much energy. After three days, I was like, ‘I’m so energetic! I’m so full of energy! Usually, I would be sluggish all the time.” His energy wasn’t the only change he noticed. As the cleanse continued, he started to feel slimmer, his pants became looser, and for the first time in years, he could tie his shoes without having to sit down first.
People started asking him how much weight he’d lost, but he didn’t have an answer. “I had three opportunities to get on the scale and I literally said, ‘Nope, I’m going to wait until the end. And I’m going to find out when everyone else finds out.”
Twenty days passed on the Full Body Cleanse. For the most part, he followed the rules, but he did admit to slipping up a few times. On day seven, he had grilled tilapia at a barbecue. “Once I would lose momentum in the past, that would be it, it would be over.” But this time, he decided to commit to the process. He wasn’t going to give up.
The Final Weigh-In
By the time the competition came to an end, he was feeling so great, he almost didn’t care how much weight he’d lost. “At this point, it wasn’t about being the Biggest Loser. It was all about continuing this momentum and this lifestyle change.” Nonetheless, he stepped on the scale to see how far he’d come in just a couple weeks. And when the “official weigher” called out 324 in front of everybody, he couldn’t believe it. “I literally could not believe I’d lost 27 pounds. It was surreal to me. I was like, ‘Oh, my God! Wow!”
“I think Dherbs isn’t only about what it does to you physically, it’s also what it does to you emotionally. It gave me such a sense of accomplishment. If I can do this, then I can do that. If I can do that, then I can do that.”
“The Dherbs Full Body Cleanse is probably one the greatest investment that I could ever make in my life. And I thank God for it.” At press time, Hosea planned to do the Full Body Cleanse in the fall in order to come closer to achieving his fitness goals. “I am going to lose a hundred pounds,” he promised us. “I’m going to lose a hundred pounds!”
