Thanksgiving is one of the most glutinous holidays in existence. With each passing year, all of the comforting, fattening dishes remain the same, but your lifestyle, health or health goals may change. Some of you may have transitioned to vegetarian, vegan, or raw vegan diets and this may be your first time encountering the upcoming holiday weekend with new dietary restrictions. How do you resist all the temptation that you’ll see at the Thanksgiving table?

 

One of the most important things that people can be thankful for is a healthy body. How many people in the United States can honestly say that all of their bodily systems and organs are functioning optimally? We estimate that a limited number of people can say this, due to increasing percentages of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. In light of the growing rates of these illnesses, which primarily stem from poor diet, doesn’t it make sense to change things up this Thanksgiving?

 

Thanksgiving Facts:

  • The average person consumes about 2,500-3,000 calories during the Thanksgiving meal. This excludes all the other foods people eat during the day.
  • Roughly 46 million turkeys are sold around Thanksgiving each year.
  • Despite all of the food that gets consumed at the Thanksgiving meal, studies show that people gain one pound over Thanksgiving weekend.
  • You would need to walk about 5.5 miles to burn off the calories from one slice of pecan pie with whipped cream.

 

Our intention is not to put fear in your soul; rather, it is to open your eyes to the fact that many people are eating their way into an unhealthy state. While you may not gain 10 pounds over Thanksgiving weekend, the eating habits can carry through the rest of the year, gobbling up sweets and carb-heavy entrees as you please. Most people gain the majority of their weight between Thanksgiving and the New Year, but you have the opportunity to break this statistic by eating some lighter, healthier options this year.     Q: I am just becoming a vegan going on 20 years in June, and it takes a lot of discipline. I was wondering if you knew any good recipes for some good vegan style dishes.     Q: I am turning 50 this year and recently discovered that I have hypothyroids along with a guider. I would like to lose 30 lbs and adapt a new and healthier way of eating.     Q: I've been eating vegan (mostly raw) for nearly 2 years. In the first year, I lost about 60 pounds. I still have about 50 more to lose and it hasn't budged in almost a year. I hear conflicting info about what sort of exercise would be best - cardio vs. strength. And any time I up my exercise, my hunger gets out of control. Any suggestions?

    A:

    Thanks for the question. The most efficient way to lose weight from working out are high rep/low weight circuit training and through HIIT (high intensity interval training).

    Your goal should be to increase metabolism and fat burning potential throughout the day. Both HIIT and circuit weight training are both effective. To be maximized you should exercise for 1 hour 5-6 times a week. You could alternate between cardio days and circuit training days. Here is an example.

     

    Mon: HIIT

    Tues: Circuit training

    Wed: rest

    Thurs: HIIT

    Fri: Circuit training

    Sat: HIIT

    Sun: Rest

     

    Here is an example of a circuit and  HIIT

     

    Circuit. 15-20 reps 1 minute rest between sets. repeat for 20-30 minutes. (feel free to use the template and build your own)

    Upper: pushups

    Lower: Squats

    Core: Crunches

    Plyo: Burpees

    Upper: Clean and press or curl to press

    Lower: Alternating weighted lunges

    Core: Reverse crunches

    Plyo: Step ups 

     

    HIIT (can be done on almost any cardio machine)

    3 minute warmup

    -30 second sprint 

    -1 minute recovery

    *Repeat for 15 minutes to 30 minutes*

    3 minute cool down

    Top fat loss mistakes for cardio and weight training

    Cardio: Doing 1 speed with no resistance cardio. This kills me. Your fat burning potential begins and ends when you do. If it doesn't challenge you it will not change you. Atleast put the resistance on mountain or random. 

    Weight: Resting too long in between sets. Super sets are key here. Work one set while resting the other. Example of a superset is chest press and seated row together. Quad machine and ham machine. Pullup and shoulder press. 

    When you ramp up your metabolism you are going to have to eat more. Losing weight isn't about calories. Losing weight is about nutrient density.     Q: Greetings, On May 10th 2003, I was attacked while on my job and I suffered injuries to the lumbar and to the cervical spine. I was given pain management therapy (cortizone) in massive doses; about 18+ injections over a 3-week period in October of the same year. By Thanksgiving, 2003, I was admitted into hospital with blood sugar levels of 800+! While thyroid issues have exhibited in the family, there is no history of diabetes on either the maternal or paternal sides of my family, niether is there any sign of the disease in any of my other 11 siblings, the youngest of which is 40+. At one point, the symptoms of the diabetes dissapeared for 2 years, and reappeared in January of 2007. I am not overweight, nor do I have eccesive body fat. I work out every day with weights, and have the appearance of a body builder, although not excessive. I walk about 3-5 miles every day and have consistently low blood pressure levels, much to the surprise of my doctors. I have and excellent diet; mostly consisting of fresh vegetables and skinless broiled chicken and fish. Some beef with the marble trimmed. I have a normal stool consisting of solid waste, and regularly. I have long suggested that my pancreatic duct(s) are blocked and after reading some of the literature on your website, I am even surer of it. Although the levels lately are starting to stabilize again, I am taking this synthetic insulin, about 3-4 units in the mornings, and before dinner, and about 10-16 units of the overnite insulin. Being well muscled, and not overweight therefore not needing to lose weight, and being totally active, What are my options in assisting me to unblock the pancreatic ducts of what I believe to be the cortizone, as I have spoken to others with the same situation, so that my pancreas may better function? I have also read about some of the other products that may be helpful. I look forward to your response, as I have heard your commercial on KJLH radio.

    Q: What's the best way to start on a vegan/raw food diet? I am not sure what to eat to make sure I would get a nutritious diet-you may not be able to go into that much detail but how can I get sample meal plans for breakfast, lunch and dinner incorporating this type of diet-perhaps there is somewhere on the web I find something like this?     If I do say myself, the best way to start a raw food diet is to be coached by me.     Here are some other tips to get started.

    1: Join a raw food meetup group or community. Surround yourself with supportive people who can point you in the right direction. Try meetup.org or 30bananasaday.com 

    2: Read books like "beauty detox solution" by snyder, "80/10/10" by Dr. Graham., or "The Paradigm diet" by Adam Dave

    3: Start simple with breakfast. Always start your day with a green smoothie. read "Green smoothie revolution" by forget authors name at the moment. heh.

    A sample meal plan would be.

    Breakfast: Green smoothie

    Bridge: raw bar, handful of nuts or seeds, or fruit

    Lunch: Raw wraps made from collard greens. use a base of tahini, hummus, or nut butter. Fill with sprouts and colorful veggies

    Bridge: raw bar, handful nuts or seeds, or fruit

    Dinner: Raw pasta with a large salad

    Snack: Sorbet

    Q: Hetep, I've been a vegetarian for about two year's now, have not consume any meat since, but recently I begin eating shrimp, I don't drink milk, eat cheese, fish. I want to be like a vegan but, is it an issue with me eating the shrimp, and another thing I smoke weed heavy, is the smoking affecting my vegetarian diet.

    Q: Hi, I'm a 36 year old African/American woman with 4 children whose been trying to lose weight off and on for the past 16 years. I lose the weight but then I gain it right back after I go off of my diet. I know that I need a good body/colon cleanse, but what I need to learn how to do is to eat the right food's to keep my body healthy.     Q: I am not sure if I am looking to go vegan, but I am doing the weight loss cleanse and do feel a difference in my body. My question is how do I keep up eating raw without getting bored? Can you recommend meal replacements and exercises.

    You should absolutely consider going vegan for your long term health, the health of the planet, and of course sparing countless animals from suffering.     Q: My 9 year old daughter has a severe case of eczema, this is the worst I've ever seen it, it's allover her face and at the inside corner of her elbows and it itches a lot.     Q: I see also that you recommend a complete diet with these programs. I am guessing its a vegan diet right? I wanted to ask something on that is coconut milk and coconut oils ok for that? I personally had a very hard time trying to eat that many vegetables and many ph balance vegans seem to think fruits aren?t good either. I eat that many vegetables one it tears me up the next day and two I just cant consume enough calories that way. I can try and make up for it by eating things like almonds but I eat to many almonds I get the same problem the next day. Now coconut milk (unsweetened) and a digestive enzyme works for me for picking up extra calories.... but I hear very conflicting information about coconut and its saturated fat content. Is it ok to use daily as a part of the diet for cleansing? And your oxy-drops are those the same as the drop for ph balancing water?? Or is it something different? I am wanting to start lifting weights as I need to put on some muscle and I?m wondering if its something that would be beneficial in combating muscle soreness by increased oxygen in the body.

    The diet we recommend is vegan-based, and RAW FOODS. Fresh fruits, vegetables, raw nuts and seeds are ideal.

    Q: Happy New Year to You and yours!!! My son is three years old; he was born December 12, 2004, this was a Sunday. Ever since he started talking he's had a fascination with the light and light bulbs. He looks up and says "mom look, the light is beautiful" or "mom see the beautiful light bulb". I look at it and I usually say yes it is beautiful Jordan. However, I do not see what he sees nor do I understand the attraction. When he was two weeks old I took him with me to Olive May and the old wise woman there saw him and asked me to bring him to her. When she looked at him she said "he is indigo--he is like sunshine when he enters a room and people will be drawn to him." So far the part about people being drawn to him has manifest true. What do you think of the attraction/fascination to the lights? Also, I read that awesome article on birthmarks!! I don't have one, however, my son has one on his buttock; I don't remember which one at the moment. His primary pediatrician called it a mongolian spot..what do you say??     You son is most definitely an INDIGO CHILD (specifically a CRYSTAL or RAINBOW CHILD manifesting all 7 spectrums of color of the Rainbow). His preoccupation with lights could denote many things. For one, he is Light himself (light-worker). It could be that he still remembers the Light before re-incarnating this time around. We all eventually move into the Light in order to move on. Mongolian spot? A very negative term! Buttocks denote an injury that occured on that area in a past life. Birthmarks don't mean something adverse will happen to you in this lifetime where your birthmark is. It doesn't mean this at all. Just be open to experience and learn from and with your child. Live in the moment and just be open!

    Q: My question however, is about my son. I have an 11 year old who has been diagnosed with high-functioning autism. He has problems staying focused. Health-wise he often suffers from respiratory issues. He breathes heavy, is constantly congested, and snores. My son has been on Risperdal for about 6 months for his autism symptoms. This medication has caused my son to gain over 40 pounds within an 8 month period of time. I really want to wean my child off of this drug, obviously because of the potential harm it will do to his overall health. We have a family history of diabetes and this worries me. My son is also very sluggish and has a problem with constipation. The doctor once did an x-ray and said he was very "backed up". She prescribed a laxative, but this did not work. Can you tell me what you would recommend?

    A:

    At some point you will really have to decide to go drugless in helping your son as drugs don't heal anything that God created. That drug he's taking that made him gain 40 pounds sounds like a steroid (which usually adds weight on to the body). I would recommend that the child performs the CHILDREN DETOX (liquid extracts) to cleanse his body and then begin consuming our teas (i.e. BRAIN TUNER), KHEMETIAN GOLD, and Crystal Elixirs to help with his ADD.     Back problems also have an emotional cause. Are you bending over backwards for somebody or something? Do you feel that your back is against the wall in some regard or matter? Turning vegan is a good idea and should really improve your health. It's the only way magic can happen or occur.
