Swap This For That When Cravings Strike

Have you ever wanted a hamburger so badly that you could not stay put until you got your hands on one? Have you experienced a chocolate craving so much so that all your thoughts throughout the day kept coming back to it? If you have, then you have experienced some serious food cravings.

Food cravings, also called selective hunger, can be tricky because, unlike normal hunger, the brain controls them. Hunger is born out of your survival mechanism; it is the body’s sign that you must feed it, and as such, the stomach controls it.

What most of us don’t know is that these food cravings are born out of nutritional deficiencies in the body. They are messages sent within the body to communicate that something is missing. For example, a craving for something sweet, such as a chocolate bar, can signify much more than just wishing to feed the palate with a sugary snack. Below, you can find some of the most common food cravings, the reason behind each, and raw foods you can eat instead.

Craving The Reason Eat Instead
Cheese Fatty Acids Deficiency Omega-3s – ground flaxseeds, chia seeds, walnuts
Red Meat Iron Deficiency Spinach, cherries, figs
Salty Foods Chloride Deficiency Celery, tomatoes, kelp
Chocolate Stress Hormone Fluctuation Leafy Greens (spinach, kale, romaine, arugula)
Chocolate Magnesium Deficiency Raw cacao nibs/powder, bananas, nuts, watercress
Soda Calcium Deficiency Broccoli, kale
Coffee Phosphorus Deficiency Pumpkin seeds
Sodium Deficiency Apple cider vinegar, kombucha
Alcohol Protein Deficiency Nuts & Seeds
  Potassium Deficiency Tomato, banana, pineapple
General Sweets Hypoglycemia (Low Blood Sugar) Fruit, cinnammon

Perhaps knowing the reason behind our cravings will not only make us understand our bodies a little more, but also help us steer our diets in a healthier direction.

  • Q: My sugar cravings are out of this world. I am not diabetic but have terrible sugar bouts. I have recently bought the sugar control. The bottle says 3 pills a day. Can I take 3 pills several times a day since my sugar cravings are so bad?

You may take your Sugar Control Formula, up to 3 times a day, with each meal!

  • Q: Is necessary to continue food combining after completing FULL BODY DETOX in 20 Days? For example can you consume sweet fruit with sub acid & acid fruit also starches and vegetable (beans) proteins together? I learned in Nutrition that starches (rice) and beans are complete protein when combined together that our body needs. Are you at risk for protein deficiency if consuming vegan diet?

  • Q: In the past two months I have lost two molars, these molars had mercury fillings. I have poor iron deficiency, due to loss of blood due to having uterine fibroids. I do believe that my molars dropped out due to this deficiency, and stress. I do get tooth pain from the resulting piece of the molar that is still inside of my mouth. I have to take acetominiphen to stop the pain. I read your article in which you said that you have not been to a dentist in many years, and your teeth are just fine. A dentist told me that if I do not have the molars replaced the the rest of my teeth will spread apart. I am unsure what to do. Do I have two spaces without teeth? Do I leave my other teeth spread apart? Do I leave that area alone? Do I get fake stuff in my mouth? I have begun the process of oil pulling to help with cleansing. I don't know how many times a day I should oil pull? I will be purchasing a tongue scraper, and I have begun to floss more often. I need some advice on proper dental care. Also how often should one have their teeth professionally cleaned, or is there a process in which I can learn to professionally clean my teeth myself, rather than paying a dental hygienist.

Dental care is pretty allopathic, and you need to make a choice about the piece of molar in your mouth. Are you willing to deal with your teeth spreading. While my teeth have been fine since 1994, I still live with the damage of my past (I have two teeth that were pulled and have empty space where the molars were - I didn't want plastic or anything synthetic in my mouth). The last time I went to the dentist, he did major damage trying to pull my tooth out. A piece of teeth went through my gums, and slightly protruded through my mouth. It eventually healed, but I learned my lesson. So you have a choice to make, Beloved! Only you can make that decision. You don't want to live with pain though! That's why I got my two teeth pulled - the pain was unbearable! I've been fine ever since due to my vegan and raw foods diet. I know brush my teeth with Dherbs.com Herbal Tooth Powder and sometimes Activated Charcoal. These help keep the teeth very white and the mouth hygienic. You only oil pull once a day, or if you oil pull more than once, you only do so on an empty stomach.

  • Q: How do you feel about Stevia? Is it safe to have on a daily basis? I bought Stevia (in tea form). The box says it is a premium quality stevia. I seem to have terrible sweet cravings. (I am not diabetic). This is why I bought Stevia. Do you offer supplements to help one with sweet cravings?

Stevia is one of the few sweeteners (along with Agave and Grade B Maple Syrup) that are allowed.

If you would like to further address your sweet cravings, try Sugar Control Formula.

  • Q: I am trying to stop ingesting unhealthy foods. I am trying to get rid of my large fibroids. In one of your articles you mentioned about the uterus. I am curious as to what happens to the uterus when the doctor performs an hysterectomy? Also, is there a daily regimen that I should follow to rid myself of the toxins in my body? Is there anything that I can take to get rid of my cravings for sweets? (I am not diabetic).

The Full Body Cleanse is a great way to help rid yourself of toxins and naturally heal your body from adverse conditions and symptoms that are affecting your health.

  • Q: Can you please tell me what about a 9 year old boy that was diagnosed with calcium deficiency? Also please tell me what a 53 year old woman should take who feels like she's pregnant after eating! Thanks very much for your time and any assistance that you can give!

Calcium deficiency is corrected with calcium SUFFICIENCY so take plenty of CALCIUM FORMULA. For after eating problems, I recommend SEN FEN FORMULA, DIGEST AID, and AFTER-DINNER TEA!

  • Q: I am on my 3rd day of the fully body cleansing. I am definitely doing this to lose weight. I am a 52 year old, black, Christian, wife, mother to 21 and 14 year old girls, legal secretary who is 450 lbs. I am to the point now where if I don't do this I'm going to be housebound. I can barely move some days that is why I started this because I feel so unhealthy. I have a question about the nuts. I got all gun-ho and ordered $135.00 worth of organic nuts from nuts.com. I got raisins, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, walnuts, pecans, pistachios and cashews and mixed them all up together (well I purchased 2 lbs of each but I only mixed up 1 lb of each together). Anyway, I was reading about how much calories are in nuts. Should I not pay attention to that because I was consuming a lot of calories in the first place or do I have to watch how many nuts I eat? I have put some nuts in a sandwich bags and basically filled it up and that is supposed to be my nuts ration for the day. I am also eating fruits and vegetables. So far the fruit have been grapes, grapefruit, red apples, pears, green apples and bananas. The vegetables have all been in a salad: tomatoes, celery spinach leaves, carrots, mixed in balsamic vinaigrette. I only ate the salad Monday night all the other times I have just eaten the fruit and nuts. I am also consuming approximately 75-100 oz of water. Sorry I’m long winded I just wanted you to get the entire picture.

Thanks for the question, I can definitely help you.

I am currently writing an eBook for www.dherbs.com called "Losing weight the healthy way." I have been a weight loss counselor for many years. I am also a health coach, personal trainer, bodymind nutritionist, and a vegan lifestyle coach.

When it comes to weight loss most programs want you to lose weight to get healthy. My mindset is to get healthy and lose weight.

In my health/fitness/nutrition coaching program www.theveganeffect.com I use a lowfat/high carb/ high raw/ nutrient dense/ high alkaline diet to achieve long term weight loss success. So far I am 100 percent in getting clients long lasting weight loss. If you are interested in my program please fill out the health history form on the side of the web page. We could have a free 1 hour initial consultation over skype to see how I can best help you.

Nuts are best kept to a minimum if you use them at all. Nuts are extremely high in fat and have the opposite omega 3- omega 6 ratio that is optimal for health. Seeds are best as far as ratios are concerned. Also nuts are truly easy to over eat and cause your nutrient ratios to be off.

A healthy vegan diet is a high raw fruitarian diet.

Breakfast: green smoothie. (500-1000 calories of fruits blended with a handful of greens and water)

Bridge: Dates and strawberries (500 calories)

Lunch: Salad with low sugar fruits (cucumber, tomato, squash, bell peppers) topped with fruit, beans, psuedo grains,

    Bridge: 2-3 apples

Dinner: Raw wraps (collard greens) with low sugar fruit and tahini

    Snack: Sorbet

  • Q: I have a limited budget. What is the best project to lose weight and to stop junk food cravings? Thanks for your help

I'm going to be honest with you: you can't have a poverty consciousness when it's time to heal. There is no cheap way! You must pay to play and stay in this world. You should save up the $127.50 so as to give your body what it needs theFULL BODY DETOX. If you had to take anything as an individual formula, I'd say purchase the BOWEL MOVER.

  • Q: Last week was my first week on the detox program. I have a question about the charcoal - what is it used for? I know that it is part of the detox program, but what organ does it help to cleanse? I have stopped all meat and dairy products with no problem- but I am still having a difficult time with the sweet cravings. Any suggestions?

Activated Charcoal aids the detoxification process by helping eliminate toxins and heavy metals.

For sweet cravings, you can eat as much fresh fruit as you'd like while on the cleanse. After your cleanse is finished, you may wish to consume Sugar Control Formula to address those cravings.

  • Q: Hi, I am currently in the second week of the Full Body Detox. It was my decision to do this cleanse because I will be having a breast reduction surgery coming up on February 1, 2008 and I wanted my body to be in the healthiest condition possible (I have previously read the Toxic Tits article, but feel this is my last resort). This will be my first major surgery and I wanted to know what supplements and/or teas would be beneficial to ensure a speedy recovery. Along with my Full Body Detox, I also purchased the Khemetian Gold, OxyDrops, and Vitamin C Formula. I have a history of iron-deficiency anemia also and I purchased some blackstrap molasses, but do I need to take anything else for that? I read that Vitamin C was good for healing, but what other herbal formulas/supplements should I purchase? Thank you and God bless you for all the wonderful work you are doing. I have already referred several people to your site, so keep up the good work! Also, would missing a couple capsules of the formulas in my FBD reduce the effectiveness of it? Thank you for your words of acknowledgment. Much obliged!

Beloved, sounds like you ordered all the right stuff to facilitate healing. The only thing I could think of for you to add would be the IRON PHOSPHATE FORMULA!

  • Q: I tried Sugar Buster recently, did not have the effect I (thought). Should I continue to use, or is there another product I should consider? My reason for asking is I am about to start a (fat) loss program and I recognize that sweets/chocolate is my problem. Not necessarily food in an of itself. Please explain how you were taking SUGAR BUSTER.

Ideally, 3 capsules should be taken in the morning on an empty stomach. When cravings are strong, and addition 3 capsules should be taken in the course of the day, or after you have eaten something sweet.

  • Q: I had my annual physical in November 2008, where it was determined that my Vitamin D levels were low (17). I did the Full Body Detox in January, which was great. I ordered and started taking the Vitamin D pills after the detox. I went to the Dr. in March, and was retested for the Vitamin D deficiency. My levels had dropped even lower to 8. Was there something else I should have been taking with the Vitamin D?

When working on the blood you should never isolate (like only be concerned with Vitamin D levels). The body is holistic, and so is the blood. Focus on the entire blood. You should take (in addition to the Vitamin D) Blood and Lymphatic Formula, Iron Phosphate, and Vitamin C Formula. These help cleanse, purify, and rebuild the blood.

  • Q: A lot of nuts & seeds that are on the food chart are acidic. Because our body should be alkaline during the cleanse is it ok to eat them?

  • Q: What Are Some Natural Sweet Treats (Junk Foods) I can Consume? Under free will you can consume what you like, but healthier products are best. You will find plenty of "healthier" snack, treat, and junk foods at good health food stores such as Whole Foods Market, PCC Natural Food Stores, Erewhon, Trader Joes, Natural Grocers, New Frontiers, etc. Just make sure to abstain from salt, sugar, and other harmful chemicals in the products you buy. We list many companies of alternative foods and products (and their website addresses) in our ALTERNATIVE DIET AND LIFESTYLES MANUAL.

  • Q: I have experienced dramatic hair loss in the last 7 months. The Dr.'s says it's stress. I have since eliminated stress, started working out, detoxing (ionic foot bath), and eliminating the bad foods. I have been known to eat excessively in the past. Im just not sure, if it is not my hormones off track, because of the poor diet, then what. Although, I believe that poor diet leads to any illness now. I would like to find one product that can focus on the bigger picture for me which is complete well being to STOP the hair loss and grow my hair back as thick and strong as it has always been. When the hair loss started I noticed constipation at the same time. The constipation is slowly getting better, but the hair loss really concerns me. I am a model, and my hair is my trademark. Do you know of any reputable naturalpaths in Atlanta? Is there a product of yours that you could suggest?

Usually, the hormones are out of balance, usually the ovaries. Hair loss is a sign of degeneracy at the sexual reproductive level. Rebuild the endocrine system. Start by cleansing the body. Start by detoxing (Full Body Detox) followed by performing the Total Woman Cleanse. Also, learn to focus on what you desire (beautiful and healthy hair) and not what you don't want (hair fallout, hair problems). Our Mental Science Manual is good reading for healing with the mind in addition to herbs and other things.

  • Q: Hey Gary here are my challenge I'm 43 been trying to lose weight, I start on a program and stop once I don't see any results. I tried the Detox I think I lost about 5 pounds, I work at night and have a part time jobs seeing private patients in the day so my sleep pattern is little maybe I get 4 hrs of sleep I'm having problems getting this weight off. I also want to mention when I do exercise my joints swell so I try to keep it low impact. I also have sweet tooth so I get these cravings here and there more so when I'm at work at night. Hopefully you can help me. Thanks....Lakeisha

    Hi, thanks for the question.

Lets go through one thing at a time. Your overall schedule and lifestyle is not healthy and will likely sabotage your health goals. Receiving so little sleep will prevent major weight loss because your body cannot cleanse and cannot recharge. You must repay your energy debt before you can properly lose weight. Your body is always in a state of playing catch-up to the workload you are giving it. It stores fat because it doesn't have the
energy to properly function. I understand crazy schedules but they will not get you the results you desire. I would focus on trying to find a more balanced or healthier schedule before adding the stress of losing weight to an already overworked body.

Your body has been come toxic and inflamed from a toxic lifestyle. A high carb-high raw vegan diet will help ease your suffering the most. A high carb (fruit based) diet will help replenish your energy stores and reduce
nutritional stress. To learn more about how a healthy vegan diet can help you reach your goals please consider the following eBooks found at Dherbs.com.

"Go Vegan the Healthy way" or
    "Lose weight the healthy way"

As far as your mindset is concerned an all or nothing approach rarely breeds success. Especially when it come to regaining health or losing weight. It takes time and patience. I would recommend checking out the DVD
"fat sick and nearly dead". It's a fascinating look at how you can quickly go from a health zero to a health hero in the shortest time. Every single person on the planet has a sweet tooth. Those who say they don't usually are hopped up on caffiene or other drugs and pharmaceuticals. Every cell in the body runs on glucose. The brain eats up a small apple and a half worth of glucose every hour. Eating a high carb-lower fat diet will give you an energy abundance, reduce overall stress, and help you lose weight.

    Hope this helps,

  • Q: I have incorporated fish into my diet because I have been craving. Is moderation okay.... meaning my fruits for breakfast a regular lunch with salad and a salad for dinner okay to pretty much moderate other foods? It is challenging for me to become a vegan. Do you have any suggestions on how to still eat healthy to maintain an alkalized body with certain foods with moderation that are not raw? I still drink my green veggies at least twice a day. I am praying that my results will be negative.

  • Q: I am using most of your Diabetes related Herbs, but I have found that I could not control my sugar cravings without the use of large amounts of Vitamin B-12. Isn't there anyway you could prepare an Herbal preparation of Vitamin B-12 ? I have tried your B Vitamin Complex product and it did not do what I wanted.

You need to get to the root of your sugar cravings. Detoxify your body, use sugar alternatives: MAPLE SYRUP, STEVIA, AGAVE NECTAR, VEGETABLE GLYCERIN, etc. Try Dherbs Sugar Buster(3 caps in the morning on an empty stomach and before you eat anything sweet).

  • Q: My wife quit using HRT "premarin" several years ago because of the bad publicity about it. She has not taken anything since. What should she take if anything? She has experienced a weight gain that is hard to get rid of and a craving for sweets. We ordered the sugar control last week.

Please read our article "Female Hormonal Replacement Therapy" on our site for natural HRT alternatives.

Sugar Control is a good start. Your wife may wish to perform the Full Body Cleanse and/or the Female Cleanse in order to help eradicate sugar and junk food cravings, while working to naturally cleanse and detoxify the body to aid in necessary weight release, enhancing the immune system and increasing energy levels.
