The Top 5 Fitness Tips Men Need To Know About

man-rope-workout

Fitness seems to be inescapable nowadays, with crossfit gyms, mixed martial arts studios, fitness models on social media, and online exercise tutorials surrounding you at all times. Despite this push towards a fitter future, obesity levels continue to rise, and three out of four men are either overweight or obese. According the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), roughly 50 percent of men do not engage in physical activity for more than 10 minutes a day.

Statistically, a father has a strong influence on what his child eats, and how frequently the child exercises. If the example is to make poor food choices and avoid physical activity, the child is more likely to experience weight problems later in life, or become obese as a child. Alternatively, a healthy, fit father figure will typically inspire the child to be conscious of employing smart dietary and fitness choices in life.

Some guys already engage in regular exercise, but their efforts in the gym are not translating to a more muscular physique or toned body. To maximize your workouts and achieve your fitness goals, apply the following tips to ensure that you have more energy and strength.

Monitor Your Progress:

Always monitor your workout progress, no matter if your goals are long-term or short-term. As you catalog your workouts and check your progress, you will be able to know whether or not you are getting stronger or increasing cardiovascular strength. You can do this by writing down reps, sets, distance, and time spent exercising. It can be beneficial to set weekly goals to keep pushing yourself. If you take supplements, notate that information as well.

Change Up Your Fitness Routine:

Progress cannot happen if you do the same workout, or series of exercises, day in and day out. Alternating your exercises, circuits, and types of activities keeps you motivated and prevents the body from getting used to the same routine. Add a few strength-training exercises into your cardio workout, take a few yoga classes, try martial arts, and vary the intensity and tempo of your interval training.

Only Workout When You Have Energy:

Hitting the gym when you are tired will not be conducive to your progress. It’s better to not workout at all than to sluggishly make your way through a few exercises before you decide to call it quits. If you have more energy in the morning, don’t force yourself to exercise in the evening when your energy is low. Work out when you know that your performance will be at its peak.

Get Enough Rest:

This goes along with the above tip because you cannot have energy without sufficient rest. The body does not perform well when it is not rested, which is why 7-8 hours of sleep per night is encouraged. Sleep is also necessary to promote swifter recovery and repair. Don’t think that exercising can take the place of sleep, either. Working out when the body is sleep deprived will not result in positive performance. In fact, you’ll most likely injure yourself.

Log What You Eat:

You can’t out exercise a poor diet, and unhealthy ingredients and oversized portions will only hinder your workouts. Take the time to start reading labels to avoid processed ingredients, which can sabotage your health. Try to avoid foods with trans fats, limit your sugar consumption, and steer clear of refined carbohydrates. Always remember that fresh is best, so don’t buy processed lunch meats or pre-packaged meals. Fresh ingredients help to satisfy your nutritional requirements, limiting the need for vitamins and other supplements. Finally, keep track of what you consume before and after your workouts because those meals play a vital role in your progress.

Q: As a diet controlled diabetic I question being able to change my diet(to raw/live foods) while I keep up the same rigorous exercise and fitness program without suffering from too many low readings of which I am prone. The program has gotten me off insulin.I also have diverticulitis and seeds and nuts have been a problem for me in the past. Any suggestions?

    A:

Thanks for the question. I hope this helps. If you are under a doctors supervision I am forbidden to give you any advice that may alter a doctors advice. They have little to no nutritional training but their word trumps everyone.

What I can do is point you in the direction of programs getting the results you desire. Those three are Dr. Neil M. Barnards "program for preventing and reversing diabetes" (DVD,book), Dr. Gabriel Cousins "Raw in 30" program (DVD) and "There is a cure for diabetes" (book), and recently The Gerson Therapy has released a program for diabetes (book).

The common denominator in all three programs is a low fat vegan diet. The differences are that Barnard's program is a cooked vegan diet while Cousins' and Gerson's program are raw. All get results but the raw programs have a 75 percent success rate in 1 month where as the cooked version of Barnards get results in 6 months. Big difference.

I have gotten people off of insulin in around 2 months using a high raw and low fat vegan diet. I use no oils and nuts. I do encourage avocados and seeds for fats. However, with diverticulitis you must avoid seeds until your body repairs itself through a high alkaline diet. I suggest getting a bulk of your fats from avocados and coconut. I usually limit myself to a half an avocados worth of fat a day.

I would look into those books first and if you are under a doctors supervision bring those materials to him/her and see what they say.

    I hope this helps.

Q: What type of exercise is good for working out while on the Full Body Detox program? I'm afraid I won't have much energy and stamina for a high impact workout on a raw food diet. Any suggestions???

    A:

    Thanks for the question,

    Exercises recommended:

    ·        Yoga

    ·        Light resistance training

    ·        Walking

    ·        Biking

    ·        Swimming

    ·        Trampoline

    ·        Pilates

    ·        Aerobics

It's best to keep exercise to a minimum. When you exercise your body pulls blood away from your core and into your limbs (fight or flight response). That directs blood away from your healing response. Also high impact or weight training requires more calories and more protein which will over work the organs that should be using their energy healing.

Q: Hi, I am interested in your raw foods detox however, I am in the gym 6 days a week doing spinning, other cardio & weight training, will I be able to continue with my normal fitness routine during detox?

    A:

Hi Karen, Thanks for the question.

    Detoxing and fitness.

The best way to detox your body is to give it the tools and time necessary to clean house. There are many types of detoxes and many avenues for fitness. The best way to detox is to rest the body while giving it the cleanest foods and herbs. However, some light forms of exercise like yoga, swimming, jogging, pilates are acceptable because they are light and won't require the amount of nutrients to repair and replenish. A raw food detox is sublime and is one fantastic step towards a healthier body and mind. I encourage you to try it.

What I would do is scale back on the exercise for the length of the detox and have fun! Go hiking and enjoy nature. A light jog instead of a spin class. I guarantee you will not lose strength or endurance during the detox. Intense exercise increases the bodies need for nutrients and protein.

Imagine if you will you have a desk at work. And work keeps piling up and no matter how  you try to efficiently make it through you can't seem to get ahead. What detoxing is designed to do is give yourself the time to clean your desk. The most efficiently way for that to happen is to stop the work from coming in. Heavy exercise may increase your workload. You want your body to be in a cleaning mode and not a repair mode.

Again I would continue exercises that are light and stimulating. You want increased blood flow and you want to aid you lymph system to pump efficiently.

Lastly, if you are training for an event it may not be the best time to detox. Detoxing symptoms can throw you off your game. Best time to detox is the off season.

    Hope this answers your question.

Q: Can I do a 45-minute cardio while doing the Full Body Cleanse? The Doctor claims I am a Type II Diabetic and I have decided to cleanse and then do the Pancreas Cleanse as well. I want to workout to tone up!!! Just wondering if I will have enough energy to continue to workout...I am doing cardio 4 x a week for 45 minutes.

A: You can still exercise while doing the cleanse, but we suggest only engaging in the light cardio instead of any intense workouts.  Because you're on an adjusted diet that consists of mainly fruits and vegetables, you may burn through the foods faster as opposed to when you workout while consuming carbs or starchy foods.  You can drink Green Tea for a boost of energy or consume raw foods that provides a natural source of energy.  Foods that provide you with more energy include bananas, spinach, citrus fruits like grapefruits and oranges, apples, almonds and lemons.

Q: I am 6'0 starting day 1 at 246, on day 4, I hit 236. But for 3 days I am at the same weight. Do I need to workout to lose more weight, if so what are some good workouts for my body type. Most of my weight is in the midsection.

    A:

    Hi, thanks for the question.

Your body does not like rapid changes in weight and will fight you along the way. These are called plateaus. It's too early to panic and by the time you get this email I am pretty sure your weight will have shifted again. You cannot spot lose weight. Your body picks and chooses where it gains weight and where it loses weight. sometimes they aren't the same places.

Working out always helps the process. Here is a blog I wrote, Three Successful Fitness Habits for Sustained Weight, on three successful habits for sustained weight loss.

Fitness for weight loss is interval cardio training and circuit weight training.

    Example of both would be:
    Interval training on bike.
    3 minute warmup
    30 seconds of high speed
    1 minute of recovery
repeat for 15 minutes till 30 minutes.

Circuit training (five rounds-1 minute rest in between rounds)
    Mountain climbers x 20
    Pushups x 20
    Squats x 20
    Bent over rows x 15
    Crunches x 25

Without knowing your body type, sports history, and health history I cannot recommend any specific exercise. I run a highly successful internet fitness/health coaching company www.theveganeffect.com. If you would like a free consultation you can fill out the health history form on the main page and I will have one of my fitness coaches contact you.

Q: I want to start the raw food diet, but do not want to lose weight has i am under weight already. I need tips to gain or at least maintain my weight. I do lift weights as part of my exercise routine.

    A:

    Thanks for the question,

Losing "weight" on a raw foods diet is a definite probability. But the weight might be excess fat and water retention due to detoxing. By weight I am assuming you are talking about muscle. It is not that complicated to keep muscle while on a raw food diet. The Vegan Effect diet program I created is 60-90 percent raw. Raw before dinner if that helps. I allow myself one cooked meal a day. For the most part the diet is a Low fat/high carb/high fruit/high alkaline diet.

The most important thing to remember is getting enough calories. My athletes (including raw body builders) typically eat 1000 calories of fruit for breakfast in the form of a green smoothie. Usually post workout. You need to eat roughly 3000 calories to maintain or grow muscle mass. Some of my mass building athletes eat as much as 5000 calories. Albeit at a higher fat ratio than our standard 70/10/20 carb/fat/protein ratios.

Please refer to my blog on building muscle ona vegan diet found here: http://the-vegan-effect.healthcoach1.integrativenutrition.com/blog/2012/05/building-muscle-on-vegan-diet

There is a raw organic food bar with 22 grams of protien that can be found here http://www.organicfoodbar.com/products/. *Note: I am not affiliated with them nor do I sell any supplements*. It is however a great bridge to meals.

Besides getting enough calories make sure you are getting around 20 grams of protein 5 times a day to maintain muscle mass. Sprouting beans, nut butters, seeds, and nuts help.

I run a 6 month online health coahcing program that includes lessons on sports nutrition and include a individualized fitness plan. I am currently running a ridiculous half off special to fill spots. If you are interested visit www.theveganeffect.com and contact me there.

Q: I am the proud purchaser of your FBC system. My husband will be starting the regiment soon. His occupation requires him to work 6p to 6a, thus he sleeps during the day Fri - Mon. The other 3 days he is on a more "normal" schedule. My concern is around what times he should consume his meals/supplements. As you can see, Breakfast and lunch could pose a problem . I am worried that his meals (Smoothies) will throw off his sleep cycle as well. What times frames should he eat at? Do some {raw} ingredients wake you up more? Please advise.

A: Thank for contacting us.  We're happy to hear that you were satisfied with the Cleanse and recommended your husband to do it.  He can adjust the intake of the capsules according to his personal schedule. If he works overnight and is asleep during the day, he can start the regimen when he is up. He should just be sure that he's consuming the formula's every 2-3 hours as instructed.   There are raw foods that helps naturally provide the body with more energy, but they're not the same as consuming caffeinated beverages that would keep him up.  Most raw foods just have multiple benefits.  The Cleanse also helps improve your sleep.

Q: I hope all is well! I am writing this note to request a consultation with Djehuti . I can only imagine how busy you are, so I will be brief. But, feel free to let me know if you'd like more detailed information. I am contacting you regarding seeking treatment for severe clinical Depression. In addition I suffer from a severe lack of energy. I'd also like to treat several nutritional deficiencies. I am 35 years old. I have been suffering from Clinical Depression since I was about 16 years old. I began to address my Depression only about 3-4 years ago. Since that time I have struggled off and on with counseling with a Social Worker, psychotherapy with a Psychiatrist, group therapy with a Psychologist, several medications, outpatient hospitalization, CBT therapy, and natural and alternative treatments such as herbs, minerals, vitamins, yoga, exercise, meditation, fasting, and cleansing. But nothing has had any long term benefits. My Depression has become increasingly more severe. Over the past 1.5 years, my Depression has been at its worse. About a year ago, I lost my job due to the Depression. I then went into a major depressive episode that has lasted well over a year. I'd like to ask you for some direction in treating my Depression, lack of energy, etc. If you have some time, I'd love to do a consultation with you. Any help that you can offer will be greatly appreciated. I am interested in doing an intense 3-month fast and detox cleanse. I would really like to do a cleanse and detoxification to completely heal my body and get rid of the toxins, impurities, mucus, etc. Thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing back from you.

Have you schedule a consultation yet? Drugs won't help you. The root cause is emotional and spiritual. Dherbs.com can help you! I'll have an article up on depression by December 1, 2008. Stay tuned to Dherbs.com!

Q: I have a very serious situation. My child's father has been diagnosed with Scleroderma. He has been working for Northwest Airlines for several years, and he was never a smoker. Yet, the doctors say this is what may have caused the illness. I am convinced that inhaling jet fuel fumes for many years is the culprit. What can he begin to take to heal from this disease? He was told there is no known cure, and he has not decided to go on any type of medication that they have for his coughing, and fatigue. Is there any advice for this condition? What can we read? I did not find an article on this condition on this website.

    A:

Because the disease affects his lungs, you guys should read "Respiratory Problems" article. I highly recommend he performs the Lungs and Respiratory Cleanse. If his work schedule is too drastic to perform this, he should take a daily regimen of, Mucus Buster, Lungs and Respiratory Formula, and Electric Greens Cell Foods Formula (3 capsules of each formula every 2-3 hours a part). Start 9 a.m. Mucus Buster, 12 p.m. Lungs & Respiratory, 3 p.m. Electric Greens, etc. And because he works in a polluted environment (jet fuel fumes), have him start taking Carbon Activated Charcoal at least twice a week. Which work miracles, and pulls out all of those toxins he's inhaling. There's much help for him. He needs to act fast though. We also have an article entitled "Activated Charcoal" in our articles section.

Q: Greetings & Namaste, First, thank you for being U-activated! So many potential energies unable to convert into kinetic activities because of our Earthly baggage(s). Personally, I haven't found the right formula to keep my beautiful curves, which is the major reason I am not vegan/raw now. In my perfect world, I'd have a great-tasting, non-dairy,wheat & gluten source of protein, juiced exotic veggie/fruit smoothies, yummy raw nuts/raisins, and absolutely no meat- the fountain of youth, literally, running thru my body! As i'm sure the cognitive wheels of your expertise are spiraling ready solutions, I ask that you also factor in social-economic status, and workout regiment. From my perspective, the price of health food is aggressively over-inflated compared to the affordability of processed and junk foods; add to that a general inaccessibility to the impoverished & disenfranchised, and dysfunctional eating psychologies impregnating entire families (for generations). I prefer high energy, high impact, anaerobic & weight-lifting training activities. So, you can see a petite person's dilemma. Thanks so much for your time and thoughts. Ms. Tiffany

Being raw or vegan does not have to be hard or expensive. The most inexpensive food are rice and beans. If you are budget consciense you should gravitate towards those foods. Stach based foods are super cheap. You should check out the book "eating vegan on 4 dollars a day" or any of Dr. Mcdougal's programs.

I run an online health/fitness/nutrition coaching program that can be found at www.theveganeffect.com. There you might find your answers.

Exercise programs do not have to be expensive either. I am a master at building fitness plans with the minimal of equipment. If all you have is your body weight than I can build you a 90 day plan. The same goes if all you have is a resistance band, exercise ball, dumbells, kettlebell, etc.

If you need any advice or have specific questions you should check out my website and message me there.

Q: I've been taking the Full Body Cleanse for almost 2 weeks. In general, I feel much better. My question is if I can eat spirulina. and/or Ultimate Meal (mainly is Quinoa, millet, brown rice, yellow pea protein, spirulina and another natural ingredients) as breakfast or lunch. In case you do not know Ultimate Meal you can see it at www.ultimatelife.com Thank you. Ricardo. Your customer service rep told me after full body detox is good to take cholesterol formula. Is enough or Do I need to take lose weight tabs? after the full body cleanse? I am taking care of my diet and exercise 3 -4 times a week 2 hours each with stationary bike or tread mill and exercises with weights.

    A:

Spirulina and Ultimate Meal are excellent supplementary products to take in order for your body to receive an adequate amount of protein while on the cleanse.

Yes, take Cholesterol Formula (and Intestinal Cleanser) after you complete the cleanse. These products will serve as a transitionary period as your body slowly accustoms to returning back to normal routines.

Q: Hey Gary here are my challenge I'm 43 been trying to lose weight, I start on a program and stop once I don't see any results. I tried the Detox I think I lost about 5 pounds, I work at night and have a part time jobs seeing private patients in the day so my sleep pattern is little maybe I get 4 hrs of sleep I'm having problems getting this weight off. Hopefully you can help me. Thanks....Lakeisha

    A:

    Hi, thanks for the question.

Lets go through one thing at a time. Your overall schedule and lifestyle is not healthy and will likely sabotage your health goals. Receiving so little sleep will prevent major weight loss because your body cannot cleanse and cannot recharge. You must repay your energy debt before you can properly lose weight. Your body is always in a state of playing catch-up to the workload you are giving it. It stores fat because it doesn't have the
energy to properly function. I understand crazy schedules but they will not get you the results you desire. I would focus on trying to find a more balanced or healthier schedule before adding the stress of losing weight to an already overworked body.

Your body has been come toxic and inflamed from a toxic lifestyle. A high carb-high raw vegan diet will help ease your suffering the most. A high carb (fruit based) diet will help replenish your energy stores and reduce
nutritional stress. To learn more about how a healthy vegan diet can help you reach your goals please consider the following eBooks found at Dherbs.com.

"Go Vegan the Healthy way" or
    "Lose weight the healthy way"

As far as your mindset is concerned an all or nothing approach rarely breeds success. Especially when it come to regaining health or losing weight. It takes time and patience. I would recommend checking out the DVD
"fat sick and nearly dead". It's a fascinating look at how you can quickly go from a health zero to a health hero in the shortest time. Every single person on the planet has a sweet tooth. Those who say they don't usually are hopped up on caffiene or other drugs and pharmaceuticals. Every cell in the body runs on glucose. The brain eats up a small apple and a half worth of glucose every hour. Eating a high carb-lower fat diet will give you an energy abundance, reduce overall stress, and help you lose weight.

    Hope this helps,

Q: I am very much aware of herbs ayurvedic and regular from a child. What makes your product lets say for the lymph and blood work better than another brand. Lets say it has the same key ingredients that is specifically for lymph and blood. Why would you need 25 herbs in a blend opposed to just the main 3 for the specific organ or purpose. I am so tired of trying everything, and want to be on a trusted regimen. I already prepared oppose to me buying each herb single and mixing it myself. My goal as a healer is to be well rounded in all the blending of herbs for specific uses. The best place to start the healing process is within yourself and I have been curious about Dherbs.

    A:

I mean, why only use the top 3 herbs available when so many other good herbs (i.e. alterative herbs, which are good for the blood) exist and are available? Why shortchange the people? Why not be unique? Why not give people the best BLOOD herbs from Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Native American Medicine, Traditional African Medicine, Traditional European Medicine, etc.? If you take the best herbs from around the world and use in your formulations and compounds, it makes a statement that your products are indeed truly for humanity. Who else is doing this? Who else even thinks like this? Our formulas contain many exotic herbs that are very expensive (for other herbalists and manufacturers) and we pride ourselves on going the extra mile to get and provide the BEST for the people (customer), especially if those exotic herbs are available and not curtailed by government regulations (which many are). And in addition to above, providing these unique herbal formulations and compounds for a very economical and reasonable cost. To be the BEST formula, the formula would have to contain the BEST organ-gland specific herbs from around the world. Now THIS, is what makes Dherbs.com unique, at least in my opinion. However, the products speak for themselves. We are the BEST and provide the BEST!
