Try These Baking Substitutions To Make Healthier Recipes

woman-with-dessert

Many people love to bake, but most dessert recipes are overly sweet, loaded with butter, and often times very fattening. We think that unhealthy ingredients are what make the dessert delicious. Believe it or not, these ingredients have substitutes that can make your baking ventures much healthier.

There’s nothing wrong with changing your approach to dessert. To keep your insides running smoothly, you don’t want to clog your system with things like oil, dairy, butter, and flour. A lot of these things can be difficult for the body to process, which can lead to digestive problems, a slow metabolism, or even arterial build-up. Try the following baking substitutes to revolutionize your desserts.

Mashed Avocados for Butter:

This may sound like an odd substitution, but avocados have fewer calories and a lot more nutrients than butter. Avocados are filled with omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, and can be eaten many different ways. This is a one to one ratio swap, when it comes to baking. If the recipe calls for 1 Tbsp. of butter then use 1 Tbsp. of mashed avocado. One thing to keep in mind is that your batter will have a green tinge. This works best with cakes and cookies. Remember to reduce the oven temperature by 25% and increase the baking time to help the dessert cook evenly.

Bananas for Butter:

In case you are opposed to eating avocados (they are amazing, so why would you be?), bananas are another great substitute for sugar. Bananas are naturally sweet and add a dense, creamy texture, as well as their signature flavor. It is a one to one ratio swap, but make sure the bananas are mashed. These go great in cakes, breads, and muffins. Using bananas may reduce cooking time by 25% so pay attention to your baked goods.

Cacao Nibs for Chocolate Chips:

Cacao nibs are a great superfood and they are loaded with nutrients, unlike chocolate chips, which have tons of sugar and processed ingredients. Since they don’t have any sugar, cacao nibs are slightly bitter, but the great thing is that they have a minimal fat content. This is also a one for one ratio swap. It works best with any recipe that calls for chocolate chips.

Stevia for Sugar:

Stevia is awesome. It’s one of the only sweetener’s we okay for people on our cleanses. It doesn’t have any calories and is plant-based. 1 Tbsp. of sugar equals about 1.5 packets of stevia. Given this equation, 1 cup of sugar in a recipe would call for 20 packets of stevia. This cuts down 800 calories for a dessert recipe that calls for 1 cup of sugar. Since stevia is 300 times sweeter than sugar, you may need to play around with measurements. Try using stevia in cookies, cakes, muffins, or dessert bars.

Black Beans for Flour:

Black beans are rich in folate, fiber, potassium, and can help support heart health. For these reasons, in addition to the body’s ability to digest beans more easily than flour, black beans are a great flour substitute. Puree dried black beans, not the ones in a can. It is a one to one ratio and works best with cookies or brownies.

Q: I am currently on the Full Body Detox. It's my 4th or 5th time & I love the results each time. My question is: I was told that it is okay to eat black beans while on the Full Body Detox, but only black beans. Although I love black beans, & would love to be able to eat them while detoxing, I wouldn't want to interfere with the detox or defeat the purpose. I look forward to you response. It sounds too good to be true...but if it is, why only black beans?

    A:

You are misinformed on the black beans or any beans for that matter, Beloved. Beans should be avoided during the Full Body Detox unless eaten SPROUTED. Sprouted beans are the only exception because they are not cooked!

Q: I am a 49 yr. old black female. When I was younger I had severe cystic acne that left me with what the dermatologist calls "ice pick scaring" and enlarged pores. I had 2 full face dermabrasions in my 30s and have been on retina A from then up until now. I have a pretty healthy diet and exercise routine. My Father and a couple of Uncles of mine also had the same type of skin problems, left with the same aftermath. I use French green clay masks which slightly reduce the look of the large pores and a sugar, honey, and lemon scrub (I make it at home) and I use it on my face. I'm not unattractive, but my skin looks rough and dull and pitted on my cheeks and nose. All the doctors talk about scar revision (cutting),laser treatments, chemical peels, and all sorts of invasive surgeries. I don't want to go that route again and I feel bad about the way I look sometimes. Are there ANY suggestions that you can give that will help me?

Q: I just completed the Full Body Cleanse about two weeks ago and started the Pancreas Formula for my pancreas... I don?t have the money for the full kit but after the Full Body Cleanse I?ve notice my blood averaging +-200.....it had reached a low of 124 during detox. I bought cromium and have used it since the onset of detox at about 1200 mcg per day! My Pancreas is a piece of crap!!!!! I haven?t had ANY thing with added sugar or artificial, just green tea with stevia to sweeten it. NO Treats! The only regular food I get now is like lean cuisine type once or twice a day with fresh vegetables or fresh made Veg juice....I had went from 327lbs to 289lbs during detox but since I?ve went back up settling at about 296 and stable. I have cut everything I love out of my life! No Sugar, No Milk Products. About 6 ounces of meat A WEEK eat mostly live vegetables yet I see a Pancreas that needs to be punished for ruining my life!!!!! I try to help it and this is what it does for me! I don?t know what to do next.

    A:

If you can't afford the full kit or kits, order and drink some of our Herbal Teas to help maintain the pancreas in its normal healthy secretion. Cinnamon Tea can also provide additional benefits.

We also recommend a daily pancreas regimen of: Pancreas Aid, Pancreas Formula, and Sugar Control.

Your vegetable juice should consist of GREEN BEAN (Snap pea) and/or BRUSSEL SPROUTS, to help maintain pancreatic health.

Q: Thanks so much for all the wonderful info! I had a chance to look at some of your products and I like what I see. There is so much good stuff here. I just finished a 60 day sugar/fat cleanse. I basically cut out all diary, white sugar, flour, pasta, etc (I was already eating a veggie diet) I did very well with the cleanse and I want to keep it going. I lost almost 20 pounds, but I started eating a little differently, since I had some events for the past couple weeks and the weight started coming back on. I'm aware that I have a slow metabolism, but I do exercise (4 to 5x a week) and I generally eat pretty well. I have about another 40 pounds I want to loose and continue to be healthy and energetic. Also, my husband and I are also trying to have our first child. Do you have any suggestions?

    A:

We would recommend that you give our Full Body Cleanse a try. It will help you lose additional weight and rejuvenate your body. Once completed, try the Fertility Kit, which is a 20 Day program and regimen that consists of herbs, elixirs, affirmations, inhaler, and dietary program to help naturally enhance fertility.

Q: I tried Sugar Buster recently, did not have the effect I (thought). Should I continue to use, or is there another product I should consider? My reason for asking is I am about to start a (fat) loss program and I recognize that sweets/chocolate is my problem. Not necessarily food in an of itself. Please explain how you were taking SUGAR BUSTER.

    A:

Ideally, 3 capsules should be taken in the morning on an empty stomach. When cravings are strong, and addition 3 capsules should be taken in the course of the day, or after you have eaten something sweet.

Q: It's been 2 weeks now since, I started eating exclusively raw. I'm even baking whole wheat bread in the sun. This was a great substitute for the cooked rice I used to eat. I'm also eating quite a large amount of grapes (red and white), as my body seems to ask for it. But recently, I noticed that my heart is beating quite strongly, and I find difficulty to bear the hot weather as a consequence. Also, I noticed a white pimple on the tip of my tongue, and this was a confirmation that there was maybe too much stimulating energy in the heart (according to oriental diagnosis of the tongue). When I eat sun baked bread, I automatically feel heat in the body. So I'm wondering if this is a good food to continue with or not. Isn't it more "neutral" (in terms of energy) to include a small portion of cooked brown rice along with the raw regimen? Just want remind you of my health issue: HPV and bacteria in the urinary tract.

    A:

Greetings! No need to feel helpless. Feeling is very powerful and you will attract more of what you are feeling if you don't control your feeling. Please consider ordering and READING (digesting) our "Mental Science Manual" and "The Love Manual" e-books. If you had sex with the guy who cheated on you, you ignited stored residual feelings from the initial violation of your trust. Forgive yourself (and him) and move on. Okay, as far as the sun baked bread, LISTEN to your body. If you're feeling heat, it's stimulating. Cut back on eating this bread. Go back to a little brown or wild rice (very balancing). Remember to detoxify your body periodically! Full Body Detox and Anti-Viral Formula.

Q: I am on my 3rd day of the fully body cleansing. I am definitely doing this to lose weight. I am a 52 year old, black, Christian, wife, mother to 21 and 14 year old girls, legal secretary who is 450 lbs. I am to the point now where if I don't do this I'm going to be housebound. I can barely move some days that is why I started this because I feel so unhealthy. I have a question about the nuts. I got all gun-ho and ordered $135.00 worth of organic nuts from nuts.com. I got raisins, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, walnuts, pecans, pistachios and cashews and mixed them all up together (well I purchased 2 lbs of each but I only mixed up 1 lb of each together). Anyway, I was reading about how much calories are in nuts. Should I not pay attention to that because I was consuming a lot of calories in the first place or do I have to watch how many nuts I eat? I have put some nuts in a sandwich bags and basically filled it up and that is supposed to be my nuts ration for the day. I am also eating fruits and vegetables. So far the fruit have been grapes, grapefruit, red apples, pears, green apples and bananas. The vegetables have all been in a salad: tomatoes, celery spinach leaves, carrots, mixed in balsamic vinaigrette. I only ate the salad Monday night all the other times I have just eaten the fruit and nuts. I am also consuming approximately 75-100 oz of water. Sorry I’m long winded I just wanted you to get the entire picture.

    A:

Thanks for the question, I can definitely help you.

I am currently writing an eBook for www.dherbs.com called "Losing weight the healthy way." I have been a weight loss counselor for many years. I am also a health coach, personal trainer, bodymind nutritionist, and a vegan lifestyle coach.

When it comes to weight loss most programs want you to lose weight to get healthy. My mindset is to get healthy and lose weight.

In my health/fitness/nutrition coaching program www.theveganeffect.com I use a lowfat/high carb/ high raw/ nutrient dense/ high alkaline diet to achieve long term weight loss success. So far I am 100 percent in getting clients long lasting weight loss. If you are interested in my program please fill out the health history form on the side of the web page. We could have a free 1 hour initial consultation over skype to see how I can best help you.

Nuts are best kept to a minimum if you use them at all. Nuts are extremely high in fat and have the opposite omega 3- omega 6 ratio that is optimal for health. Seeds are best as far as ratios are concerned. Also nuts are truly easy to over eat and cause your nutrient ratios to be off.

A healthy vegan diet is a high raw fruitarian diet.

    Example:

Breakfast: green smoothie. (500-1000 calories of fruits blended with a handful of greens and water)

Bridge: Dates and strawberries (500 calories)

Lunch: Salad with low sugar fruits (cucumber, tomato, squash, bell peppers) topped with fruit, beans, psuedo grains,

    Bridge: 2-3 apples

Dinner: Raw wraps (collard greens) with low sugar fruit and tahini

    Snack: Sorbet

    Hope this helps

Q: Is there such thing as, cleansing too much? From May - July I did a 40 day cleanse. The cleanse was pretty much ridding my diet of refined sugar, flour, alcohol, and animal product for much of the time. I just recently finished the Total Body Cleanse, and will be finishing my series of cleanses with the Total Woman's Cleanse. I personally feel fine, but people keep warning me about over cleansing. Also, bringing up the issue of your body being stripped of the good bacteria (along with the bad). But, I"ve taken probiotic pills (1-2) virtually everyday througout all of my cleanses. Should I be concerned with overcleansing? After this initial year of hard core cleansing, I plan to cleanse maybe once or twice a year. What are you thoughts on probiotics? Like I mentioned, I am taking pills. But I'd like to find foods that provide all that I need so I don't have to take pills.

    A:

Many people are concerned about what happens to the beneficial intestinal flora after colonics are performed. Personally, I think many people put too much energy into worrying about something so inconsequential. If you're really worried about the beneficial intestinal flora after your colonic, you could always take a few capsules of acidophilus (acidophilus bifidus) or a liquid form of acidophilus (dairy-free, of course). I have never taken an acidophilus product after a colonic. I know Nature and my body too well. I know that my body naturally produces everything sold by man in a bottle, and that is purchased from a health food store, including beneficial flora or bacteria. I simply drink a minimum of 4 ounces of vegetable juice after my colonic sessions. If you're into carrot juice, carrot juice is just as effective as acidophilus in restoring good bacteria in the intestines. Juiced cantaloupe is even better than carrot juice in restoring the beneficial flora. Other natural substances that will help the body to repopulate beneficial flora or good bacteria in the intestines include: Blue Green algae, Spirulina, Chlorella, Irish Moss, Kelp, Bladderwrack, Dulse, Ginger, Cloves, Cayenne, Black Walnut Hull, and Carrot powder. Stop listening to these naysayers and keep doing YOU! You're on the right path!

Q: Thank you for always answering my questions. I have about two more. Okay, I'm currently living overseas where I'm limited on raw fresh foods (vegetables and fruits). I want to do the detox but I'm concerned that I won't have everything as far as raw food to be successful. I have access to basics (apples, oranges, bananas, tomatoes, avocados, melons, lettuce, cabbage, bean spouts, carrots, celery, peppers, green beans, peas, bagged nuts,) but nothing exotic by any means. Then I was told to safely eat some of the food in the local economy that we should wash it with a 5% bleach solution (is that safe...and if on the detox I'm thinking that would be a no go). Two questions?Given the mentioned availability of raw foods could I be able to successfully complete the detox (I don't have an issue with eating the same things over and over again) and two what can I do to clean local produce so that its safe for consumption? Apparently part of the issue is that they use human feces to fertilize. Thank you for your time and I look forward to your response

    A:

Yes, it seems you have enough raw food available to you to complete the cleanse.

In order to clean local produce, rinse thoroughly with apple cider vinegar to "disinfect" it. If apple cider vinegar is unavailable, just use water.

Q: If I gave the SUGAR BUSTER to my child for adhd what effect is it going to have on them compared to what they are taking now, one is on addrell and the other is concerta? I have no idea! I really don't believe in ADD! ADD only means a child is too advanced and is greatly bored in the classroom learning non-mentally stimulating things for an old world paradigm. However, the drugs you are giving those innocent children are harming their bodies and overall health. Problems are not fixed by drugging. Have you read our article entitled "ATTENTION-DEFICIT DISORDER"?

Q: I have a question regarding Bad Breath. I have tried everything, baking soda, rinsing with peroxide, Dr. Katz products, changing toothpaste, breath mints, everything you could think of. I don't think it has anything to do with my hygiene I think I have a health problem that my doctors have not been able to find. I really want to know how to get rid of it. My self esteem is affected by it and I am a business owner and the last thing I want to do is have my clients think that I don't brush my teeth. I brush them several times a day and I even carry my toothbrush with me sometimes.

    A:

Bad breath starts in the colon! Read the article "SKUNK BREATH (Halitosis)" on our site in the articles section. It'll give you great insight into this situation. Product-wise, I recommend you perform the FULL BODY DETOX followed by the 10-DAY SUPREME COLON CLEANSE.

Q: My question is, are raw desserts fattening? I've purchased all raw food cookbooks and I made two desserts that I absolutely love. Then I started thinking that if I have a raw dessert every night that might be too much. What do you think?

    A:

RAW DESSERTS ARE NOT FATTENING UNLESS YOU THINK THEY ARE THEN YOU WILL ATTRACT WHAT YOU FEAR. HOWEVER, I WOULDN'T GET TOO CAUGHT UP ON EATING A LOT OF RAW DESSERTS (TREATS) BECAUSE WE SHOULD NOT HAVE TREATS EVERYDAY BUT ON SPECIAL OCCASIONS.

Q: Hi Dherbs. I'm pregnant. I've been slacking off with my diet for years now, eating just about every bad thing but pork. I had gestational diabetes with my last pregnancy. Now I may have it again with my current pregnancy at 4 months. They're going to give me the 3 hr test and I know they'll try to make me take insulin. I really don't want to shoot myself with needles. It wasn't a pleasant experience last time. Anyway to make a long story short, I wanted to know if the following would be good products to work on the situation: FULL BODY DETOX SUGAR BUSTER TEA PANCREAS FORMULA Would any of these pose a problem or interact poorly with my baby? Do you suggest any other effective formula of yours to improve my glucose uptake and general health during this pregnancy?

    A:

I highly suggest the 10-DAY ELECTRIC GREENS CELL FOOD CLEANSE for pregnant women. This cleanse will help to address all your needs and all health concerns. You can perform it as much as you like too! It provides great nutrition for mother and developing child.

Q: My daughter, who is 11 yrs old found a 1cm lump in her left breast 2wks ago. She was referred to a specialist and of course they want to surgically remove the lump. I let a co-worker scan the lump and they think it is a non-cancerous fibroandroma (I do ultrasound myself) and I saw a couple of cysts around the area as well. Of course I don't want the surgery for my daughter. Do you have any suggestions on how to get rid of all the abnormalities herbally? Maybe Yellow Dock tea, but I am concerned about her young age. Maybe a light detox. She started her period already at 11yrs old. Most healthcare professionals say fibroandromas are normal at this age when they begin their cycle due to the hormonal changes. I know better. My daughter drinks about 4-5 cups of purified water (aquavie machine) a day, no red meat, just chicken. Sneaks candy from school and little desserts at home maybe say 4 cookies a day. She gets sugar from natural OJ and Ocean Spray cranberry juice though. I am working on getting her off of sugar completely but it is a challenge. I’ve been a vegetarian for 5 years and am slowly going raw. Always seeking more knowledge. Also could there be a lack of something in her diet? My daughter is lazy and never works out play outside consistently (5'7" and 143lbs) she is tall for her age and is sliming her stomach down almost unnoticeable just a little pudge left. 1 day of PE in the schools. I am yust trying to paint the picture and give you her history.

    A:

HAVE THE CHILD PERFORM THE CHILDREN’S DETOX EVERY 3 MONTHS. I WOULD ALSO HAVE HER DRINK THE : DETOX TEA AS WELL (EVERY DAY, ONE CUP). SOUNDS LIKE YOU ALSO NEED TO WORK ON KEEPING THE CHILD'S COLON MOVING CONSISTENTLY AS WELL. THROUGH MODIFIED DIET AND NUTRITION THE LUMP CAN DISSOLVE ON IT'S OWN. HOWEVER, DISCIPLINE IS KEY HERE!

Q: Hello, I finished taking the Full Body Detox and I am currently taking Total Male Cleanse for my urethritis. My question is about your STD-Rid product. How differently does this work from Total Male Cleanse? Would I be able to take 5 pills every four hours? This STD seems like it doesn't want to go away. I'm feeling a lot better, but I still have inflammation in my lower region as well as itching in my penis. Also what would you suggest for something sweet to eat. I was so used to eating cookies and cakes, but I know with your products you advise no man made sugar. Thanks so much for your help.

    A:

Total Male Cleanse and STD-Rid are totally different. One's a kit and the other is a separate formula. STD-Rid is a maintenance formula specifically after STD infection. Total Male Cleanse is for more than just STDs, but also male hormonal issues like prostate problems.

Drink a lot of unsweetened cranberry juice. This helps with STDs!

Confrey Root tea is also good!

Natural sweets include maple syrup, agave nectar, and stevia.
