Understanding Labels: How To Read Your Way Healthy

old-man-reading-food-product

When most people are looking to improve their health, they often latch on to the latest health or fitness trends without doing a lot of research. Some people look at getting calorie counting apps, shopping at health food stores, or joining a local crossfit or boot camp class. We aren’t discounting diet and exercise (because they are important!), but one of the best ways to quickly improve your health is by learning how to read nutrition labels.

Every packaged food product in the United States has to have a nutrition label. Knowing how to read the information on these labels could save your life, and ignoring this information could increase your risk of heart disease, diabetes, or cancer. These labels don’t contain complex scientific information or difficult mathematical equations. They are not that scary, and we are going to teach you how to decipher them in order to become a healthier person.

Serving Size:

This information is always found at the top of the nutrition label. Be mindful of the serving size and the amount of servings per package. For instance, a bag of chips may have a serving size of 14 chips, but there are four servings in the package. Eating the whole package, then, increases your intake of every other item on the label.

Nutritional Facts:

Everything that is inside the black lines (calories, sugars, protein, sodium, fats, etc.) is representative of one serving. That is the most important thing to understand! If one serving has 200 calories, but there are 2.5 servings in the container, eating the whole container means that you consume 500 calories. It’s a clever marketing trick because people commonly overlook that the ingredients represent one serving.

The Fats:

There are several numbers and names that you must pay attention to on nutrition labels. A product that says it is 99% fat free should theoretically contain 1% fat. This is most often representative of the weight of the product. Fats are listed multiple ways, with multiple values, in one area on the label. This is confusing! Dressings, condiments, soups, or canned foods can all be diluted with water, which increases the weight but not the fat. Companies can sell a product that is 90% fat by diluting it, seasoning it, and marketing it as 98% fat free.

This isn’t to say that all fats are bad for you. Nuts and seeds, coconut oil, olive oil, avocados, and other plant-based foods contain beneficial, heart-healthy fats. On nutrition labels, you have to look out for and avoid trans fats and saturated fats, both of which can contribute to heart disease.

Cholesterol & Sodium:

The goal should be to limit your consumption of both of these ingredients. Excessively consuming both of these can lead to high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Again, pay attention to the serving size and amount of servings per container, because you might be consuming 500 milligrams of sodium, when you think you are only consuming 150 milligrams.

Carbohydrates:

Carbohydrates are the breads, grains, fibers, and sugars in foods. Dietary fiber is integral for a healthy digestive system and can keep you satiated between meals. You have to watch out for sugars because, like trans fats, they have been linked to a host of health problems. The types of carbohydrates should also be of major concern. Foods like breads, pastas, or chips are often low in fiber and high in carbohydrates. While these foods may not contain a lot of sugars, the carbohydrates will operate similarly in your bloodstream. They are simple carbs. You want to focus on complex carbs from foods like broccoli, pears, carrots, sweet potatoes, bananas, quinoa, buckwheat, whole oats, and apples.

Vitamins & Minerals:

Truth be told, you shouldn’t pay any attention to the vitamins in a packaged food product. These numbers are notoriously low and you should focus on fresh fruits and vegetables to obtain a wide variety of vitamins and minerals.

The Percentages:

On the right side of the nutrition label, you will notice different percentage values that correlate to the fats, sodium, sugars, and protein. The percentages are based on a 2,000-calorie per day diet. Keep in mind that if there are 2.5 servings in a certain food and one serving satisfies 20% of your daily sodium intake, you could be at 50% by just eating one snack.

Now you know how to read nutrition labels! There’s no need to be afraid, and there’s no reason to think something is healthy when you can clearly read that it isn’t. Lastly, don’t forget to read the actual ingredients. Remember that the ingredients are listed in order of the amount. If high fructose corn syrup is first on the list, you can bank on that food product being high in calories with minimal nutritional value, if any. Additionally, the longer the ingredient list, the worse the food is for you. While this information is beneficial for your health, the best way to remain healthy is to focus on foods that don’t have nutrition labels. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, and whole grains can help you remain on the healthy path.

Q: I am currently serving in Iraq. I started your 20-day Full Body Cleanse and I have a question about diet. The food that is served to Soldiers is terrible here! The fruits and vegetables are laced with pesticides. So there really isn?t a good source of nutrition here. My question is should I continue with my detox even though I'm fighting a losing battle? I can feel the difference in my health after one week so far! Also, do you have any advice or a product that will get rid of excessive body moles? I notice that with aging, my body moles have shown up in the weirdest places and are very visual on my face, neck and upper chest.

    A:

Don't stop detoxing due to circumstances. The herbs are fighting the pesticides. Keep doing what you're doing and you will still see the beneficial results of the cleanse.

    Q:

    A:

Herbal supplements are not drugs. The Vegan Protein Powder Mix contains natural occurring protein, and will supplement your diet at a healthy level. We do not offer measurements in mg per capsule because there is no true way to measure how much protein is in an organic item. Many companies offer that measurement as a way to get you to buy more of their products, but it is typically just a guesstimate. For instance, we could say that there is "x" amount of protein inside of each capsule but some of the capsules may be denser than others etc. Hopefully this offers an honest explanation of why we do not do this. If you are using it to gain muscle mass while lifting weights, this product should suffice, and can be mixed in an Almond Shake or with other such ingredients that are high in organic protein to help you reach your goal.

Q: On WebMD there is information stating that high fiber foods such as raw fruits, and vegetables can irritate or flare up Crohn's disease. But, your article on Chron's disease says to switch to a vegan diet after detoxing. Why would raw fruits and vegetables flare up Chron's disease? Why do your articles suggest to eat raw fruits and veggies when people say it can irritate the disease?

    A:

We don't subscribe to that. We do our own homework at Dherbs.com. There is no confusion at Dherbs because we use logic, reason, common sense, intuition, wisdom, etc. So we are not confused in regards to food and health.

Q: Which are the best fruits and vegetables that promote weight loss during the detox and should the nuts be excluded? Do I need a combination of protein, carbohydrates and fats in order to lose substantially and if so, are there fruits and vegetables in these categories and is there possibly a limit to certain ones?

    A:

All fruits and vegetables help to tone you to the weight you desire. Why exclude nuts? Weight comes from meat, dairy products, refined products, etc. Not natural foods! Don't worry about protein, carbs, etc. It creates confusion! Real food doesn't cause problems. Let all the dietary confusion go and you will be fine!

Q: What Are Some Natural Sweet Treats (Junk Foods) I can Consume? Under free will you can consume what you like, but healthier products are best. You will find plenty of "healthier" snack, treat, and junk foods at good health food stores such as Whole Foods Market, PCC Natural Food Stores, Erewhon, Trader Joes, Natural Grocers, New Frontiers, etc. Just make sure to abstain from salt, sugar, and other harmful chemicals in the products you buy. We list many companies of alternative foods and products (and their website addresses) in our ALTERNATIVE DIET AND LIFESTYLES MANUAL.

Q: I recently completed the Full Body Detox, which I loved. Now, 2 months later, I am very interested in the weight release program. Last year, I lost 40 lbs in 8 months, in the most healthy way (good nutrition and exercise). This year, I slowly started gaining weight back, and 1 year later, I continue to gain weight much more quickly. I am still working out regularly, and eating well. Would you recommend the Weight Release Kit? I am looking to take off 20 lbs at the most. Is that realistic for this formula? However, I want to build muscle and strength as well. Can I maintain the results of the program with the directed nutrition plan, and add white meat for protein (chicken, turkey, tuna). I am also wondering if the formulas simply release excess weight, or can I expect to lose inches and lower my body fat percentage? Thanks for your time and dedication to natural health!

    A:

Glad to hear about your success with the Full Body Detox!

I would highly recommend the Weight Release Kit and Regimen. NO MEAT though! Try vegan alternatives if you must have something - but no meats!

You will release weight (waste)! Your weight is nothing but waste!

Q: My question is regarding fibroids. I have been told I have had fibroids about the size of someone 3 months pregnant. I have been told there are two in clusters. I have been trying some remedies on my own like more exercise and a change in diet. My primary physician does not recommend surgery she has me taking iron ferrous sulfate supplements twice per day to help with my iron count. It seems to be helping. The only problem I have with taking the iron supplements is that it sometimes causes constipation and I am normally pretty regular. I usually eliminate 2 times per day sometimes 3. My OB/GYN on the other hand keeps pushing for me to having surgery.& amp; nbsp; They had me take BC pills, however I took myself off of them because they made me sick. I took them only for 6 months. I'm 45 and have never taken BC pills ever and I don't want to start now. I've never been pregnant. I flow heavy on my 2nd and 3rd day heavy and after that it is manageable. My cycle has improved however I want to reduce the flow on those days if possible and of course dissolve the fibroid if at all possible. Doctors tell me they won't go away unless removed. I used to be on my cycle for 7 days and 4 of those days were heavy. Now I'm normally on for 4 days and only the 2nd and 3rd day are heavy. I know that as I reach menopause they may shrink in size, however I'm still aways off from that. I eat no red meat however I do eat fish and poultry. I eat a pretty good balance of vegetables and fruits, mostly raw and steamed. I drink lactaid milk. I don't eat much dairy except cheese and eggs occasionally. I do have a weakness, I love potato chips. I know this is not good. I can feel the fibroid get bigger when I eat them. When I stop for a period of time it decreases in size. At least I feel like it does. I'm not a sugar craver, however during the week before my cycle I'll crave sweets. I usually resist. I feel it's my diet that has caused the fibroids as well as every female in my family has had a hysterectomy due to fibroids. I think it is also hereditary as well. Whatever the case I'd like to know what regimen can you put me on that will help me? The goal is to reduce or dissolve the size of the fibroid so it is not affecting my iron level. I'm also starting to see my abdomen get bigger when I've always had a flat stomach. Perhaps this is me just getting older, however I think it's the fibroids. Constant low levels over time can't be good. I hope I have provided you enough information to give me your recommendation. If not please feel free to e-mail me for any additional information you need. I'm looking for a natural cure. Outside of this condition I'm in very good health. No problem with weight, high blood pressure or high cholesterol. I'm pretty athletic and active as well. Please advise. I look forward to your recommendation.

    A:

I remember just recently e-mailing you on this inquiry. Your diet MUST CHANGE! Consider full fledged RAW FOODS and VEGAN diet during your healing transition. Lactaid milk is HORRIBLE for you. Did you read our â€FIBROID TUMORS†article?????? You need to keep on performing FULL BODY DETOX followed by Fibroid Buster kit and regimen, back to back! Continuously! Detoxing must become a lifestyle for you! For iron, consider Dherbs.Com IRON PHOSPHATE FORMULA and MOON CYCLE FORMULA. Also, consider a telephone consultation because time is greatly limited in writing back in response to inquiries. There is much healing for you, Beloved!

Q: I am on my 3rd day of the fully body cleansing. I am definitely doing this to lose weight. I am a 52 year old, black, Christian, wife, mother to 21 and 14 year old girls, legal secretary who is 450 lbs. I am to the point now where if I don't do this I'm going to be housebound. I can barely move some days that is why I started this because I feel so unhealthy. I have a question about the nuts. I got all gun-ho and ordered $135.00 worth of organic nuts from nuts.com. I got raisins, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, walnuts, pecans, pistachios and cashews and mixed them all up together (well I purchased 2 lbs of each but I only mixed up 1 lb of each together). Anyway, I was reading about how much calories are in nuts. Should I not pay attention to that because I was consuming a lot of calories in the first place or do I have to watch how many nuts I eat? I have put some nuts in a sandwich bags and basically filled it up and that is supposed to be my nuts ration for the day. I am also eating fruits and vegetables. So far the fruit have been grapes, grapefruit, red apples, pears, green apples and bananas. The vegetables have all been in a salad: tomatoes, celery spinach leaves, carrots, mixed in balsamic vinaigrette. I only ate the salad Monday night all the other times I have just eaten the fruit and nuts. I am also consuming approximately 75-100 oz of water. Sorry I’m long winded I just wanted you to get the entire picture.

    A:

Thanks for the question, I can definitely help you.

I am currently writing an eBook for www.dherbs.com called "Losing weight the healthy way." I have been a weight loss counselor for many years. I am also a health coach, personal trainer, bodymind nutritionist, and a vegan lifestyle coach.

When it comes to weight loss most programs want you to lose weight to get healthy. My mindset is to get healthy and lose weight.

In my health/fitness/nutrition coaching program www.theveganeffect.com I use a lowfat/high carb/ high raw/ nutrient dense/ high alkaline diet to achieve long term weight loss success. So far I am 100 percent in getting clients long lasting weight loss. If you are interested in my program please fill out the health history form on the side of the web page. We could have a free 1 hour initial consultation over skype to see how I can best help you.

Nuts are best kept to a minimum if you use them at all. Nuts are extremely high in fat and have the opposite omega 3- omega 6 ratio that is optimal for health. Seeds are best as far as ratios are concerned. Also nuts are truly easy to over eat and cause your nutrient ratios to be off.

A healthy vegan diet is a high raw fruitarian diet.

    Example:

Breakfast: green smoothie. (500-1000 calories of fruits blended with a handful of greens and water)

Bridge: Dates and strawberries (500 calories)

Lunch: Salad with low sugar fruits (cucumber, tomato, squash, bell peppers) topped with fruit, beans, psuedo grains,

    Bridge: 2-3 apples

Dinner: Raw wraps (collard greens) with low sugar fruit and tahini

    Snack: Sorbet

    Hope this helps

Q: I have read about your detox system on your site and others. Here is the product that I am thinking about purchasing: Full Body Detox I have some questions... 1) Is there a diet plan or eating plan that comes with this order? and 2) I have 100 pounds to lose and am thinking about going on the Medifast plan. That is a high (vegetable) protein diet with no fruit and not a lot of vegetables allowed. Would these supplements in the detox plan help my organs that might be taxed a bit on this diet with very little vegetables and no fruit? I am skeptical about #2...I think raw fruits and vegetables are so important inour diets, yet, I do need to drop weight fast. I look forward to any thoughts that you might have.

    A:

Yes, the Full Body Cleanse comes with a dietary regimen prescribing an all-raw foods diet (fruits, vegetables, raw nuts and seeds). This means no meat, dairy, grains, or processed foods.

Q: I am starting to look at alternative medicines and food choices very seriously now, in fact I recently wrote a research paper on the subject, while reading your article you mentioned Dr Hulda Clark, I goggled her name and got some good and bad reviews. One article in particular caught my attention. If you could would you please read this article and give me your feedback. I am really interested in alternative medicine and I want to teach my kids about the options that they have. I am currently putting together a binder for my kids with things I have read about alternative medicines, detox, the harm that cooked foods(meats in particular) have on the body etc. This article bothered me and before I include any information on treatment from her clinic I wanted some feedback on this article.

    A:

Hulda offers some very good information but she's a bit extreme in my opinion and she relies too much on gadgets for healing rather than the mind, diet, attitude, lifestyle, etc. The choice is up to you, Beloved, whether to include her clinic! From the article, Hulda's clinic looks very frightening! I probably wouldn't include it!

Q: Thank you for always answering my questions. I have about two more. Okay, I'm currently living overseas where I'm limited on raw fresh foods (vegetables and fruits). I want to do the detox but I'm concerned that I won't have everything as far as raw food to be successful. I have access to basics (apples, oranges, bananas, tomatoes, avocados, melons, lettuce, cabbage, bean spouts, carrots, celery, peppers, green beans, peas, bagged nuts,) but nothing exotic by any means. Then I was told to safely eat some of the food in the local economy that we should wash it with a 5% bleach solution (is that safe...and if on the detox I'm thinking that would be a no go). Two questions?Given the mentioned availability of raw foods could I be able to successfully complete the detox (I don't have an issue with eating the same things over and over again) and two what can I do to clean local produce so that its safe for consumption? Apparently part of the issue is that they use human feces to fertilize. Thank you for your time and I look forward to your response

    A:

Yes, it seems you have enough raw food available to you to complete the cleanse.

In order to clean local produce, rinse thoroughly with apple cider vinegar to "disinfect" it. If apple cider vinegar is unavailable, just use water.

Q: Is necessary to continue food combining after completing FULL BODY DETOX in 20 Days? For example can you consume sweet fruit with sub acid & acid fruit also starches and vegetable (beans) proteins together? I learned in Nutrition that starches (rice) and beans are complete protein when combined together that our body needs. Are you at risk for protein deficiency if consuming vegan diet?

    A:

IT'S YOUR CHOICE! OF COURSE IT'S BEST TO CONTINUE TO DO SO. IT'S UP TO YOU, BELOVED! I PERSONALLY DON'T RECOMMEND IT. NOT TRUE! YOU CAN'T GET PROTEIN FROM COOKED FOODS REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE FOOD IS. OF COURSE NOT, UNLESS YOU ARE IGNORANT TO PROTEIN, REAL PROTEIN, HOW AND WHERE TO GET IT.

Q: I see also that you recommend a complete diet with these programs. I am guessing its a vegan diet right? I wanted to ask something on that is coconut milk and coconut oils ok for that? I personally had a very hard time trying to eat that many vegetables and many ph balance vegans seem to think fruits aren?t good either. I eat that many vegetables one it tears me up the next day and two I just cant consume enough calories that way. I can try and make up for it by eating things like almonds but I eat to many almonds I get the same problem the next day. Now coconut milk (unsweetened) and a digestive enzyme works for me for picking up extra calories.... but I hear very conflicting information about coconut and its saturated fat content. Is it ok to use daily as a part of the diet for cleansing? And your oxy-drops are those the same as the drop for ph balancing water?? Or is it something different? I am wanting to start lifting weights as I need to put on some muscle and I?m wondering if its something that would be beneficial in combating muscle soreness by increased oxygen in the body.

    A:

The diet we recommend is vegan-based, and RAW FOODS. Fresh fruits, vegetables, raw nuts and seeds are ideal.

Coconut Milk and Coconut Oil are excellent products to have in your diet. The healthy fats will keep you fuller.

Oxy-Drops can help balance your electrolytes that need to be replenished after a workout in order to keep your body performing efficiently.

Q: I purchased the Multi vitamins and minerals because I'm trying to go all natural with majority of the products that I use. anyhow, my question is how can this formula provide every essential vitamin that most otc vitamins if the ingredients don't specify which vitamin they represent and its mg or IU (amt per serving).

    A:

OTC minerals don't provide all 102 minerals even in oxide form let alone organic form. We use plants, various plants, considered nutritive in that they contain a FULL spectrum on nutrients. Full spectrum means encompassing all and because you use different herbs, the nutrients one herb lacks the other contains. Also, Dherbs doesn't deal in RDA levels for nutrients, i.e. mg, grams, etc.

Q: Have you ever thought about expanding to the Houston, TX area? If so can I help? I have a high passion to teach people about nutrition, and herbal healing. It's because you I recently stop eating meat. Also do you talk to churches, if so could you talk to mine. I am willing to give up everything I do right now to fight against this horrible epidemic of Western Medicine.

    A:

I could use all the help available! It's not easy being one person. I just need people who are committed though. And yes, I talk to plenty of churches here in California. I will talk to anyone who listens. I even teach health and nutrition from a Biblical perspective too. I only require hotel lodging, airline (United Airlines only), ground transportation, and if possible, a love offering. I'm always available to speak to God's people. Always! Thank you Elton! Thank you for your interest. There's no greater service today in the world than servicing people. Peace and Love!

Q: Yes coconut oil maybe natural but I go thru 3-4 jars per week, 1-1/2 a jar a day, not only is it making me broke out I do not think all that saturated fat is good for me. I know I lack a lot of protein and other vitamins in my diet. Could this lack of essential nutrition cause this weird craving? I don't know if it is the massive loss of blood due to the fibroids.

    A:

I think you know the answer for yourself. Therefore, stop eating the coconut oil. Take some vitamins and minerals and see if this helps. Sounds like PICA, a nutritional deficiency which causes cravings. Blood loss most certainly will cause loss of nutrients.

Q: I am returning this product to you for my refund. I liked what you said in the article about fibroids. I wanted more information such as success stories or testimonials. You said I should just go with the flow and order the product. That it didn't matter what other women had experienced. After getting the product on Wed, I checked the ingredients on the internet. It seems that one herbal website strongly advises women with fibroids not to take Dong Quai. Also Julia Chang on her website - www.sensiblehealth.com says that it is one of the herbs I should not take. That Chinese doctors do not understand female hormones, etc. I have bought a lot of stuff on the internet with my credit card, this is the first time I am returning something. Oh well, back to the basics. I will read over your Full Body Cleanse. Thanks!

    A:

As long as the bottle is unopened you are entitled to a refund.

However, none of the herbs we use will have you experiencing any negative side effects. Dong Quai and other herbs only provide beneficial results.

No problem with weight, high blood pressure or high cholesterol. I'm pretty athletic and active as well. Please advise. I look forward to your recommendation. Also, how much per month will these products cost and how many months do the kits last? How do you recommend I buy them? By kit or individual? Thank you for your time!

    A:

I recommend you perform the FULL BODY DETOX kit followed by the FIBRIOD BUSTER CLEANSE AND REGIME. Perform them back to back. Take a break for about a month and perform both of them again. Six weeks on and six weeks off. While your off of these 2 kits, take individual formulas of IRON PHOSPHATE FORMULA, FIBRIOD BUSTER, and MOON CYCLE FORMULA. In re iron, you are taking POISON! The kind of iron you are taking is poisonous and mixes with sulfur in your body which creates constipation. I suggest Dherbs IRON PHOSPHATE FORMULA which is 100% all-natural with absolutely no adverse side effects! Also, you have to improve your diet. Nothing greatly causes fibroids than DAIRY PRODUCTS! The meat, potato chips, dairy, etc. is filling up your trashbags (tumors). Go VEGAN and RAW FOODS! Start reading some of our free health articles, i.e. â€FIBROID TUMORSâ€, â€WHAT IS RAW FOODSâ€, etc. Dherbs products can greatly help you and you'll see and/or feel the difference (as long as you don't cheat on your diet). There is much help for you!

Q: The product label talks in terms of children's needs. The directions say "1 to 2 drops" as needed. What about adults? How many drops under the tongue or in water and how many times per day? Is it okay to take it every day even though it has Echinacea?

You can double up the children's dosage for yourself as an adult and yes, you can take it every day despite the Echinacea
