Beware of Hybrid and Genetically Engineered Foods!

” Hybrids tend to be vigorous growers, uniformity of shape and earlier more sustained flowering, larger flowers or vegetables, or larger fruits.

Heirloom or Open Pollinated (OP) plants are simply varieties that are capable of producing seeds that will produce seedlings just like the parent plant. Not all plants do this.

Plant breeders cross breed compatible types of plants in an effort to create a plant with the best features of both parents. These are called hybrids and many of our modern plants are the results of these crosses.

While plants can cross-pollinate in nature and hybrids repeatedly selected and grown may eventually stabilize, many hybrid seeds are relatively new crosses and seed from these hybrids will not produce plants with identical qualities.

Anyone can select and eventually stabilize their own seed or even hybridize new plants, but plant and seed companies have recently begun patenting their crosses so that only have the right to reproduce the hybrids they’ve developed. Monsanto is at the forefront in this capacity.

Hybrid Foods

Today we are inundated with hybrid foods, whether we are aware of this fact or not. Hybridized foods also fall under the category “products for convenience”.

Now ask yourself, “Is the majority of what you’re eating being shipped (to a market)?” If so, there’s a great chance the food or product contains hybridized ingredients.

Have you ever seen a watermelon that is shaped more like a basketball rather than a traditional oblong shaped watermelon? Well, this kind of watermelon-like creation is a hybrid. It’s not an actual watermelon. It’s watermelon-like!

Real or actual watermelon has seeds in it, black seeds at that! It is oblong in shape, and not oval-shaped like a basketball. Believe it or not, you will even find this kind of watermelon-like product at so-called health food stores.

Hybrid foods are created by cross breeding multiple foods within the same species. By breeding two parent samples of a particular food, a superior food can be made. Hybrid food has become increasingly popular because it provides food supply increase and hardiness and increased nutrition. The most common hybrid foods include vegetables, fruits, and rice.

Some common hybrid fruits are:

  • Grapefruit
  • Boysenberries
  • Lemon
  • Orange
  • Pineapple
  • Apple
  • Nectarine, and
  • Cantaloupe

Common hybrid vegetables include:

  • Beets
  • Carrots
  • Corn, and
  • Potatoes

Common hybrid nuts and seeds include:

  • Cashews
  • Oats
  • Rice, and
  • Wheat

Brown, white, and “wild” rice are hybrids. Commercial “soft” wheat is a hybrid. Alfalfa sprouts and most commercially available legumes are hybrids.

Genetically Engineered Foods

Using the latest molecular biology techniques, plants have been modified to enhance desired traits. In comparison to breeding, genetic engineering can create desirable looking plants in a shorter time with more accuracy. A specific gene can be isolated and transferred from one plant to another.

Many herbs (plants) are genetically engineered, as well as grafted. Some are also sprayed with harmful toxic chemicals allegedly to protect them.

Common hybrid herbs include:

  • Peppermint
  • Queen Anne’s Lace
  • Peach Leaf, and
  • Spearmint

Many herbs are no longer natural and because there is a heavy demand for these particular herbs, these herbs are man engineered and harvested, herbs such as Echinacea, Goldenseal, Comfrey, and St. John’s Wort to name a few. Their original strains may have been natural, but today, many of them are unnaturally grown.

Seaweeds like chlorella, spirulina, and blue green algae, as nutritious as they are, are harvested in man-made lakes and ponds and cannot be found in the wild. Harvested foods are far safer than genetically engineered and grafted foods.

We need to be aware of genetically engineered foods. Our state of optimal health and wellbeing depends on it. Nothing we eat or could eat is safe or spared from possibly containing genetically engineered ingredients. Consider the following:

Eating genetically engineered (GE) foods may cause defects (imbalances) within the human body. Because the molecules of hybrid and GE plants are altered, it stands to reason that the molecules of the human makeup also become altered and this altering manifests in human behavior, actions, and thoughts in the form of defective or faulty behavior, actions, and thoughts. After all, you are what you eat.

Genetically engineered foods also help the business of addiction. The greatest addiction on our planet is sugar addiction so it’s no wonder why hybridized fruits are real sweet, sweeter than what Nature intended.

But it doesn’t just have to be sugar to cause an addiction. Anything hybridized can lead to addiction of the hybridized product.

DHerbs has warned people for years that tobacco used in cigarettes and other tobacco-based products contain GE tobacco. The modern day tobacco strains are ten times more addictive than the tobacco used in earlier times.

Health conscious individuals who are vegan and vegetarian need to be very conscious about consuming soy products.

There is no other food (or crop) that is more genetically engineered than soy, well, perhaps with the exception of corn.

The less soy one consumes, the better. However, the only soy that should be consumed today is one that has a label on the product with the word “non-GMO” written on it. This means the product contains no genetically modified food organism, at least to the knowledge of the manufacturer. So, the product may contain non-GMO soy, but it may contain ingredients that are GE simply because these ingredients were sourced from some other company who may have used GE ingredients.

This is why food-labeling laws for notice of GMO ingredients are necessary and very important. All companies should take responsibility and inform customers and consumers of what they are eating. If GE and GMO foods are so safe as is claimed by GE and GMO proponents, why not give the people notice of these kinds of foods and/or food ingredients in certain products.

Whether the pesticide is sprayed on the crop or genetically engineered into the crop, it will eventually end up in the bloodstream. Consider the following:

“In 2003, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) looked at pesticides in the blood of ordinary citizens. Of the thirty-four pesticides tested, the average person had thirteen in his/her bloodstream, and blood levels of chlorpyrifos (an organophosphate pesticide banned for residential use in 2001 because of its negative effects) were found to be twice as high in children as in adults. The CDC report showed that children and women of child-bearing age carried the heaviest pesticide burdens – which is alarming, because pesticide exposure in the womb and during the first three years of postnatal life has been found to lower birth weight, increase the incidence of birth defects, and hinder normal neurological development and reproduction.”
Source: Lipski, Elizabeth. “Digestive Wellness For Children.” California: Basic Health Publications, Inc. (2006), p. 22

Heirloom Open Pollinated Plant vs. Hybrid Plants

The difference between an heirloom open pollinated plant and a hybrid plant is that an open pollinated plant has one parent and a hybrid plant has two parents.

Hybrid seeds are seeds that result from the cross pollination of two inbred pollination plants.

Many health conscious individuals who decide to grow their own crops by purchasing seeds may not know that many seeds sold in packets, sold from nurseries and even sold from mail order are F1 hybrids.

You can always tell a hybrid fruit or vegetable because they are usually very large. The tomatoes you see nowadays are much larger than what you saw back in the 1970s. Tomatoes in supermarkets are much larger than the tomatoes you will find in your natural garden and that’s because they are hybrids.

Hybrids vs. Genetically Modified Organisms

Hybrids should not be confused with Genetically Modified Organisms or (GMOs) which can be any plant, animal or microorganism that has been genetically altered using molecular genetics techniques such as gene cloning and protein engineering. Plants like corn that has the pesticide Bt engineered into its genetic makeup to make it resistant to certain pests are GMO crops. Bt is a natural pesticide, but it would never naturally find its way into corn seed.

If you’re thinking about starting your own organic garden, make sure you get informed about the seeds you will use to start and maintain your garden.

Hybrid foods are everywhere so if you eat you’ve got to be eating some hybrids.

If you want to make eating hybrids work for you, David Wolfe recommends that you eat small amounts of fruits and vegetables. Mix bananas with fat (avocados, nuts, olives) and it will lessen the hybrid effect on the system.

If you eat more green-leafed vegetables and avocados, nuts, or olives with hybrid sweet fruits or vegetables it will decrease their effect on the blood sugar and increase the utility of elements in the food.

Hybrid grains, and legumes should be soaked and sprouted, and absolutely never cooked.

As long as they are raw, the body can draw nutrients from them and can deal with them.

Q: I just came across this information, and I am VERY CONFUSED! I have recently come into consciousness about my health, origins, spirituality, etc. I am an avid reader of your site, and I am preparing to purchase your Full Body Detox. But, PLEASE TELL ME IF THIS IS TRUE: That on December 31, 2009, we (as a people) cannot buy any herbs, nutrients, without the prescription of a doctor (Codex)? I've been reading many articles, but due to brain overload it's very hard for me to comprehend. Does this mean there will be no more, or health food stores selling herbs? Also, if you happen to write an article on this can you please let me know about an "urban legend" that there was a "world" meeting among leaders, and Oprah was the only black woman in attendance, and that legislation like Codex was brought into the forefront to decrease the Earth's population. After reading some articles, I could see a connection with this "urban legend", when one stated that Codex could possibly kill 3 billion people. I know you have mentioned it briefly in a Q&A on your site as well as an article on Hybrid Foods, but I am seeking your wisdom and commentary due to your ability to explain in layman's terms. I hope you can answer my questions as myself and many others look to your site for Overstanding.

Not true! Don't waste your time worrying about Codex A. Think positive, Beloved! The urban legend is laughable. Many people just like to think negative, so they create negativity in their life. That has nothing to do with Codex A, but their own thinking! You can relax, Beloved!

Q: I heard about Hoodia on the TODAY show on NBC. It's supposed to suppress your appetite for weight loss. I have printed wikepedia for a more formal definition. It's supposed to be natural. Hoodia is a genus of 13 species in the flowering plant family Apocynaceae, under the subfamily Asclepiadoideae. [1] They are stem succulents, described as "cactiform" because of their remarkable similarity to the unrelated cactus family. They can reach up to 1mhigh and have large flowers, often with flesh colour and strong smell. Many Hoodia species are protected plants, typical of the Namib Desert, ranging from Central Namibia to southern Angola, especially in plains and rocky areas. Common names include "Bushman's Hat" and "Queen of the Namib". Several species are grown as garden plants, and one species, Hoodia gordonii, is being investigated for use as an appetite suppressant.

Suppression is not cure or healing! You can't solve a problem by suppressing it! A suppressed appetite will manifest in some other area, i.e., an enormous appetite for sex, shopping, drugs, etc. Just because a thing is natural doesn't mean you are addressing the root of the problem, Beloved! It's much deeper than suppressing!

Q: What Are Some Natural Sweet Treats (Junk Foods) I can Consume? Under free will you can consume what you like, but healthier products are best. You will find plenty of "healthier" snack, treat, and junk foods at good health food stores such as Whole Foods Market, PCC Natural Food Stores, Erewhon, Trader Joes, Natural Grocers, New Frontiers, etc. Just make sure to abstain from salt, sugar, and other harmful chemicals in the products you buy. We list many companies of alternative foods and products (and their website addresses) in our ALTERNATIVE DIET AND LIFESTYLES MANUAL.

Q: Thank you for always answering my questions. I have about two more. Okay, I'm currently living overseas where I'm limited on raw fresh foods (vegetables and fruits). I want to do the detox but I'm concerned that I won't have everything as far as raw food to be successful. I have access to basics (apples, oranges, bananas, tomatoes, avocados, melons, lettuce, cabbage, bean spouts, carrots, celery, peppers, green beans, peas, bagged nuts,) but nothing exotic by any means. Then I was told to safely eat some of the food in the local economy that we should wash it with a 5% bleach solution (is that safe...and if on the detox I'm thinking that would be a no go). Two questions?Given the mentioned availability of raw foods could I be able to successfully complete the detox (I don't have an issue with eating the same things over and over again) and two what can I do to clean local produce so that its safe for consumption? Apparently part of the issue is that they use human feces to fertilize. Thank you for your time and I look forward to your response

Yes, it seems you have enough raw food available to you to complete the cleanse.

In order to clean local produce, rinse thoroughly with apple cider vinegar to "disinfect" it. If apple cider vinegar is unavailable, just use water.

Great question. The key to successfully The Full Body Cleanse, is to not starve yourself. We want you to consume fresh fruits, and vegetables until you are content. Q: I am on my 3rd day of the fully body cleansing. I am definitely doing this to lose weight. I am a 52 year old, black, Christian, wife, mother to 21 and 14 year old girls, legal secretary who is 450 lbs. I am to the point now where if I don't do this I'm going to be housebound. I can barely move some days that is why I started this because I feel so unhealthy. I have a question about the nuts. I got all gun-ho and ordered $135.00 worth of organic nuts from I got raisins, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, walnuts, pecans, pistachios and cashews and mixed them all up together (well I purchased 2 lbs of each but I only mixed up 1 lb of each together). Anyway, I was reading about how much calories are in nuts. Should I not pay attention to that because I was consuming a lot of calories in the first place or do I have to watch how many nuts I eat? I have put some nuts in a sandwich bags and basically filled it up and that is supposed to be my nuts ration for the day. I am also eating fruits and vegetables. So far the fruit have been grapes, grapefruit, red apples, pears, green apples and bananas. The vegetables have all been in a salad: tomatoes, celery spinach leaves, carrots, mixed in balsamic vinaigrette. I only ate the salad Monday night all the other times I have just eaten the fruit and nuts. I am also consuming approximately 75-100 oz of water. Sorry I’m long winded I just wanted you to get the entire picture.

Thanks for the question, I can definitely help you.

Nuts are best kept to a minimum if you use them at all. Nuts are extremely high in fat and have the opposite omega 3- omega 6 ratio that is optimal for health. Seeds are best as far as ratios are concerned. Also nuts are truly easy to over eat and cause your nutrient ratios to be off.

A healthy vegan diet is a high raw fruitarian diet.

Breakfast: green smoothie. (500-1000 calories of fruits blended with a handful of greens and water)

Bridge: Dates and strawberries (500 calories)

Lunch: Salad with low sugar fruits (cucumber, tomato, squash, bell peppers) topped with fruit, beans, psuedo grains,

    Bridge: 2-3 apples

Dinner: Raw wraps (collard greens) with low sugar fruit and tahini

    Snack: Sorbet

Q: Well it seems almost all the food in the agric field is sprayed with pesticide. I want to know the genetic effect on food and on our body?

The chemical effect on food puts pollutants, posions, and toxics in our bodies which makes it necessary to detoxify our bodies 2-4 times per year. They also make us ACIDIC which causes the pH level in our body to be imbalanced, potentially causing a variety of issues with hormone production, and the immune system.

Q: While doing a candida cleanse, it was told to me that I should be following a raw food diet full of fruits and vegetables. Fruits have high sugar content and can feed a candida overgrowth, as it is a well known fact that candida albicans thrive on sugar. How can I justify eating fruits high in sugar? Thank you for your comments. Ozzy

A: Yes, when you have a candida issue it's best to avoid refined sugar. Sugar from a natural source like fruits should be consumed moderately. In your case it would be best to consume fruits mainly in the mornings for breakfast when your body maximizes on food the most, avoiding the ones that are very high in sugar.

Q: On WebMD there is information stating that high fiber foods such as raw fruits, and vegetables can irritate or flare up Crohn's disease. But, your article on Chron's disease says to switch to a vegan diet after detoxing. Why would raw fruits and vegetables flare up Chron's disease? Why do your articles suggest to eat raw fruits and veggies when people say it can irritate the disease?

We don't subscribe to that. We do our own homework at There is no confusion at Dherbs because we use logic, reason, common sense, intuition, wisdom, etc. So we are not confused in regards to food and health.

Q: I have ordered the detox cleanse, and the weight cleanse. Both state to eat a raw diet of veggies and fruit, nuts, nut pastes??, legume sprouts, seeds, plant oils, sea veggies??,and fresh juices. It mentions Vegan Diet. What are my options when it comes to these choices? What do I eat and how often to keep my sugar from dropping, and feeling sick? Usually mid am, and mid afternoon?

The best way to balance blood sugar and keep your body in a fat burning zone is to eat low fat and every 3-4 hours. Also high raw and high carb. Here are some options. Just a general outline.

    Muesli - fruit smoothie-green smoothie

    2-3 pieces of fruit

    Raw wraps-raw pasta-salad with legumes

    2-3 peices of fruit

Q: Several people in the conscious community have stated that adding flax seeds and/or flax seed powder to our diet benefits the colon for complete and clean bowel movements. My question is, does flax seed powder or the seeds themselves promote parasites in the stomach and colon? A few of my friends and I have completed the parasite cleanse and got into a debate about it. Thank you very much, Hotep!

Flax seed undoubtedly helps the colon (due to fiberous nature) but it is absurd to think or suggest that flax seeds (in any form) promotes parasites. Meat, dairy, refined grains and other processed foods is what promotes parasites in the stomach, colon, and rest of the body. So, as Public Enemy would say: "Don't believe the hype!"

Q: It's been 2 weeks now since, I started eating exclusively raw. I'm even baking whole wheat bread in the sun. This was a great substitute for the cooked rice I used to eat. I'm also eating quite a large amount of grapes (red and white), as my body seems to ask for it. But recently, I noticed that my heart is beating quite strongly, and I find difficulty to bear the hot weather as a consequence. Also, I noticed a white pimple on the tip of my tongue, and this was a confirmation that there was maybe too much stimulating energy in the heart (according to oriental diagnosis of the tongue). When I eat sun baked bread, I automatically feel heat in the body. So I'm wondering if this is a good food to continue with or not. Isn't it more "neutral" (in terms of energy) to include a small portion of cooked brown rice along with the raw regimen? Just want remind you of my health issue: HPV and bacteria in the urinary tract.

Greetings! No need to feel helpless. Feeling is very powerful and you will attract more of what you are feeling if you don't control your feeling. Please consider ordering and READING (digesting) our "Mental Science Manual" and "The Love Manual" e-books. If you had sex with the guy who cheated on you, you ignited stored residual feelings from the initial violation of your trust. Forgive yourself (and him) and move on. Okay, as far as the sun baked bread, LISTEN to your body. If you're feeling heat, it's stimulating. Cut back on eating this bread. Go back to a little brown or wild rice (very balancing). Q: I just purchased the WEIGHT RELEASE CLEANSE AND REGIMEN and today is my first day. I'm unable to get through on our inquiry line. The diet isn't completely clear to me. Although it says miso soup is ok, I'm unclear on other things. For instance, is tofu ok? What about hummus? What do sprouted grains consist of? Would Eziekial sprouted grain breads and tortillas be ok? The miso soup is the exception to the dietary rule! NO tofu, NO Ezekiel grain breads (no processed grains at all). Sprouted grains are grains (or seeds) soaked in water overnight and consumed. They are not cooked! Hummus is okay (as it's not cooked). Q: I am a 55 year old female. I have an overactive bladder. I am trying to control it myself, without medication. I have not tried herbs. I eat fruits, vegetables, grains and proteins (not beef or pork). I added back more meat proteins 1 1/2 years ago because I was becoming so tired and lacking energy. (I read The Schwartzbein Diet, which helped convince me to add more protein.) I don't eat much sugar, salt (only 500 mg./day) or hardly any processed foods. I drink water and licorice tea, because it makes me feel good. I believe in the power of positive thinking. Can you help me with this?

The steps you are taking in your diet are a great start. Try going raw, and eliminating grains and meat altogether. You can get enough protein and healthy fats with avocado, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, almonds, brazil nuts, coconut. You can also add Vegan Protein Powder to smoothies.

I also recommend you give our Full Body Cleanse a try to further detoxify your entire body. After detoxing, the ideal formula for you is our Kidneys Bladder-Adrenal formula.
