The FitExpo is an immersive experience involving all things health and fitness. Anybody can attend the massive event to learn about new health trends & products, fitness gear, recovery methods, workout equipment, and so much more. People can take part in group fitness classes, sample new products, play dodgeball (yes, you read that correctly because they have a dodgeball court there!), watch cooking demonstrations, and converse with fitness professionals. Whether you are an avid bodybuilding fan, health food blogger, exercise enthusiast, or someone who has an interest in becoming healthier, there is something at the FitExpo for everyone.

 

Before we attend The FitExpo, we were extremely fortunate to meet and interview Robert Cheeke, author of the bestselling book, Shred It!. Robert is the founder of Vegan Bodybuilding & Fitness, he’s a two-time natural bodybuilding champion, and he tours the world promoting the power of plant-based foods! Here’s what he had to say in our interview.

 

Dherbs: What made you decide to go vegan and how long have you been a vegan?

Robert Cheeke: “Growing up on a farm in Corvallis, Oregon, I became a vegan in 1995, at age 15, when I no longer wanted to contribute to animal cruelty and animal suffering. I barely weighed over 100 pounds and had no aspirations of getting bigger and stronger. Over time, I grew from 120 pounds to 210 pounds and became a two-time natural bodybuilding champion, and I am now in my 24th year as a vegan athlete.”

Dherbs: Do you know other athletes who became vegan and have they described a difference in recovery time or how they feel when they lift?

Robert Cheeke: “I know dozens of bodybuilders who were already competitive in their sports prior to adopting a plant-based diet. The top two reactions they all seemed to share were an increase in energy and reduced recovery time. Those byproducts typically come from eating a high-energy diet, one of carbohydrate-rich fruits, vegetables, legumes, and grains, while avoiding the foods that require lots of energy for digestion, such as meat, dairy products, and heavy animal-based foods.”

Dherbs: Can you explain how plant-based foods reduce recovery time?

Robert Cheeke: “The improved recovery time often comes from eating anti-inflammatory foods, while avoiding pro-inflammatory foods. If you can reduce your inflammation, you increase your recovery, and you can expedite your forward progress in athletic performance. Fruits and green leafy vegetables, along with herbs and spices, and roots like ginger and turmeric are some of the best foods for reducing inflammation and speeding up recovery.”

Dherbs: What do you enjoy eating before and after a workout?

Robert Cheeke: “The best foods to eat before a workout are carbohydrate-rich (energy) fruits, especially right before a workout. If you are eating an hour or two before training, perhaps sweet potatoes, brown rice, or oats would be a good fuel source. Following a training session, I enjoy a mixture of carbohydrates, protein, and fats, all of which come naturally in something like a burrito bowl containing brown rice, pinto beans, black beans, lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, and salsa. Alternatively, plant-based sushi rolls and rice and vegetable meals from Indian, Vietnamese, Thai, and Ethiopian cuisines are outstanding post-workout foods.”

Dherbs: How much protein do you consume a day and what are your primary protein sources?

Robert Cheeke: “I document every single calorie consumed for up to six weeks at a time, so I have an accurate account of what my nutrition intake looks like, and my macronutrient breakdown looks like this:

  • 3,100 calories consumed daily
  • 70% of calories from carbohydrates
  • 10% of calories from protein
  • 20% of calories from fat

“I also expend about 3,000 calories per day, for a very slight surplus that keeps me at a consistent weight that is currently about 204 pounds. I consume about 77.5 grams of protein per day, and while my overall protein consumption is significantly smaller than other bodybuilders, I choose not to have a special emphasis on protein consumption, but rather overall nutrition. The most vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fiber, and water come from carbohydrate-rich whole plant foods, which is where my focus is.”

Dherbs: Given that a lot of supplements are derived from animals, what advice would you give an athlete who was trying to go vegan?

Robert Cheeke: “Although many sports supplements are derived from animals, some plant-based brands are the top selling products at major supplement stores across America. The plant-based nutrition industry is booming! As for me, I haven’t used any supplements, aside from vitamin B12, in more than six years. Since removing sports supplements from my diet in 2012, I have become the biggest and strongest I have ever been. I generally suggest to consume a wide variety of healthy plant foods like fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds, in adequate calories based on your caloric needs; along with proper hydration, exercise, and rest.

“My recommendation for anyone wanting to adopt a vegan lifestyle and plant-based diet is to discover your favorite plant-based foods and ensure you have them in adequate supply, so you’re not tempted to eat other foods. Also, find your own personal meaning for becoming vegan, and the more purpose you have behind your pursuit, the more likely you are to stick with it.”

    Q: I see also that you recommend a complete diet with these programs. I am guessing its a vegan diet right? I wanted to ask something on that is coconut milk and coconut oils ok for that? I personally had a very hard time trying to eat that many vegetables and many ph balance vegans seem to think fruits aren?t good either. I eat that many vegetables one it tears me up the next day and two I just cant consume enough calories that way. I can try and make up for it by eating things like almonds but I eat to many almonds I get the same problem the next day. Now coconut milk (unsweetened) and a digestive enzyme works for me for picking up extra calories.... but I hear very conflicting information about coconut and its saturated fat content. Is it ok to use daily as a part of the diet for cleansing? And your oxy-drops are those the same as the drop for ph balancing water?? Or is it something different? I am wanting to start lifting weights as I need to put on some muscle and I?m wondering if its something that would be beneficial in combating muscle soreness by increased oxygen in the body.

    The diet we recommend is vegan-based, and RAW FOODS. Fresh fruits, vegetables, raw nuts and seeds are ideal.

    Being raw or vegan does not have to be hard or expensive. The most inexpensive food are rice and beans. If you are budget consciense you should gravitate towards those foods. Stach based foods are super cheap. You should check out the book "eating vegan on 4 dollars a day" or any of Dr. Mcdougal's programs. 

    I run an online health/fitness/nutrition coaching program that can be found at www.theveganeffect.com. There you might find your answers. 

    Exercise programs do not have to be expensive either. I am a master at building fitness plans with the minimal of equipment. If all you have is your body weight than I can build you a 90 day plan. The same goes if all you have is a resistance band, exercise ball, dumbells, kettlebell, etc.

    Q: How often should one eat cook food? I'm a vegan, I do not consume any meat, seafood, milk what so ever. I eat water cresses like everyday so as cook food. Like white rice with black bean sauce, spinach, and pasta at time's I'll eat some Chinese fried rice, veggie roll, steamed vegetables, any advice?

    A:

    You can eat cooked food as much as you like. However, try to incorporate as many nutrient-dense raw foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, raw nuts and seeds, into your diet to make sure you are receiving an adequate amount of nutrients.

    Q: I am a 55 year old female. I have an overactive bladder. I am trying to control it myself, without medication. I have not tried herbs. I eat fruits, vegetables, grains and proteins (not beef or pork). I added back more meat proteins 1 1/2 years ago because I was becoming so tired and lacking energy. (I read The Schwartzbein Diet, which helped convince me to add more protein.) I don't eat much sugar, salt (only 500 mg./day) or hardly any processed foods. I drink water and licorice tea, because it makes me feel good. I believe in the power of positive thinking. Can you help me with this?

    A:

    The steps you are taking in your diet are a great start. Try going raw, and eliminating grains and meat altogether. You can get enough protein and healthy fats with avocado, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, almonds, brazil nuts, coconut. You can also add Vegan Protein Powder to smoothies.

    Q: I have read lots of information about B12. Is the plant based formula as reliable as other sources? If you could provide some more information it would be great.

    Q: I am very interested in Dherbs herbal formulas - they appear to be high quality, good formulas. I have a question for you. I eat a vegan diet, about 50% raw foods (sometimes more), get regular exercise, and love to spend time in nature. I am a generally healthy person who rarely gets sick. I have healed myself from asthma and allergies and other ailments by living a healthy lifestyle and using herbs and energy work. However, I do still suffer from cramping during my period (probably endometriosis) and from cervical dysphasia due to HPV. I would love to get these cleared up, too! What do you recommend in terms of your herbal formulas? For example, should I do the whole body detox first, then start in with the ailment specific recommendations, or start everything all at once? Any advice you could give me would be greatly appreciate.

    Q: I am just becoming a vegan going on 20 years in June, and it takes a lot of discipline. I was wondering if you knew any good recipes for some good vegan style dishes.     Q: As a diet controlled diabetic I question being able to change my diet(to raw/live foods) while I keep up the same rigorous exercise and fitness program without suffering from too many low readings of which I am prone.The program has gotten me off insulin.I also have diverticulitis and seeds and nuts have been a problem for me in the past. Any suggestions?

    A:

    Thanks for the question. I hope this helps. If you are under a doctors supervision I am forbidden to give you any advice that may alter a doctors advice. They have little to no nutritional training but their word trumps everyone. 

    What I can do is point you in the direction of programs getting the results you desire. Those three are Dr. Neil M. Barnards "program for preventing and reversing diabetes" (DVD,book), Dr. Gabriel Cousins "Raw in 30" program (DVD) and "There is a cure for diabetes" (book), and recently The Gerson Therapy has released a program for diabetes (book). 

    The common denominator in all three programs is a low fat vegan diet. The differences are that Barnard's program is a cooked vegan diet while Cousins' and Gerson's program are raw. All get results but the raw programs have a 75 percent success rate in 1 month where as the cooked version of Barnards get results in 6 months. Big difference.

    I have gotten people off of insulin in around 2 months using a high raw and low fat vegan diet. I use no oils and nuts. I do encourage avocados and seeds for fats. However, with diverticulitis you must avoid seeds until your body repairs itself through a high alkaline diet. I suggest getting a bulk of your fats from avocados and coconut. I usually limit myself to a half an avocados worth of fat a day. 

    I would look into those books first and if you are under a doctors supervision bring those materials to him/her and see what they say.

    Q: I have had bacterial vaginosis for about 2 years now. My symptoms are not bad, as I only feel a little bit of itching and burning every now and then. But I do have a lot of discharge, which generally actually does not smell foul. The reason is gardnerella. I have tried all kinds of treatments from antibiotics, boric acid, homeopathy and magnetism, but nothing has helped so far. I've been a vegetarian for almost ten years now, although I do eat fish from time to time. I avoid breads, dairy products, eggs and seafood. However, I've been really busy lately and in a lot of stress, so I have been paying less attention to what I eat. I do prefer pretty comfortable clothing though. As far as treatment goes, I am not interested in daily baths or douches (have tried this as well based on a homeopath's recommendation) or anything like that, as I simply don't have the time or the conditions for it. I currently live in a Third World Country. What can and should I do? I am thinking more of supplements etc. I hope you can give me some advice

    Q: On WebMD there is information stating that high fiber foods such as raw fruits, and vegetables can irritate or flare up Crohn's disease. But, your article on Chron's disease says to switch to a vegan diet after detoxing. Why would raw fruits and vegetables flare up Chron's disease? Why do your articles suggest to eat raw fruits and veggies when people say it can irritate the disease?

    We don't subscribe to that. We do our own homework at Dherbs.com. There is no confusion at Dherbs because we use logic, reason, common sense, intuition, wisdom, etc. So we are not confused in regards to food and health.

    Q: Is necessary to continue food combining after completing FULL BODY DETOX in 20 Days? For example can you consume sweet fruit with sub acid & acid fruit also starches and vegetable (beans) proteins together? I learned in Nutrition that starches (rice) and beans are complete protein when combined together that our body needs. Are you at risk for protein deficiency if consuming vegan diet?

    Q: Thank you for always answering my questions. I have about two more. Okay, I'm currently living overseas where I'm limited on raw fresh foods (vegetables and fruits). I want to do the detox but I'm concerned that I won't have everything as far as raw food to be successful. I have access to basics (apples, oranges, bananas, tomatoes, avocados, melons, lettuce, cabbage, bean spouts, carrots, celery, peppers, green beans, peas, bagged nuts,) but nothing exotic by any means. Then I was told to safely eat some of the food in the local economy that we should wash it with a 5% bleach solution (is that safe...and if on the detox I'm thinking that would be a no go). Two questions?Given the mentioned availability of raw foods could I be able to successfully complete the detox (I don't have an issue with eating the same things over and over again) and two what can I do to clean local produce so that its safe for consumption? Apparently part of the issue is that they use human feces to fertilize. Thank you for your time and I look forward to your response

    Yes, it seems you have enough raw food available to you to complete the cleanse.

    In order to clean local produce, rinse thoroughly with apple cider vinegar to "disinfect" it. If apple cider vinegar is unavailable, just use water.

    Q: I've been eating vegan (mostly raw) for nearly 2 years. In the first year, I lost about 60 pounds. I still have about 50 more to lose and it hasn't budged in almost a year. I hear conflicting info about what sort of exercise would be best - cardio vs. strength. And any time I up my exercise, my hunger gets out of control. Any suggestions?

    A:

    Thanks for the question. The most efficient way to lose weight from working out are high rep/low weight circuit training and through HIIT (high intensity interval training).

    Your goal should be to increase metabolism and fat burning potential throughout the day. Both HIIT and circuit weight training are both effective. To be maximized you should exercise for 1 hour 5-6 times a week. You could alternate between cardio days and circuit training days. Here is an example.

     

    Mon: HIIT

    Tues: Circuit training

    Wed: rest

    Thurs: HIIT

    Fri: Circuit training

    Sat: HIIT

    Sun: Rest

     

    Here is an example of a circuit and  HIIT

     

    Circuit. 15-20 reps 1 minute rest between sets. repeat for 20-30 minutes. (feel free to use the template and build your own)

    Upper: pushups

    Lower: Squats

    Core: Crunches

    Plyo: Burpees

    Upper: Clean and press or curl to press

    Lower: Alternating weighted lunges

    Core: Reverse crunches

    Plyo: Step ups 

     

    HIIT (can be done on almost any cardio machine)

    3 minute warmup

    -30 second sprint 

    -1 minute recovery

    *Repeat for 15 minutes to 30 minutes*

    3 minute cool down

    Top fat loss mistakes for cardio and weight training

    Cardio: Doing 1 speed with no resistance cardio. This kills me. Your fat burning potential begins and ends when you do. If it doesn't challenge you it will not change you. Atleast put the resistance on mountain or random. 

    Weight: Resting too long in between sets. Super sets are key here. Work one set while resting the other. Example of a superset is chest press and seated row together. Quad machine and ham machine. Pullup and shoulder press. 

    When you ramp up your metabolism you are going to have to eat more. Losing weight isn't about calories. Losing weight is about nutrient density.     Q: I have read about your detox system on your site and others. Here is the product that I am thinking about purchasing: Full Body Detox I have some questions... 1) Is there a diet plan or eating plan that comes with this order? and 2) I have 100 pounds to lose and am thinking about going on the Medifast plan. That is a high (vegetable) protein diet with no fruit and not a lot of vegetables allowed. Would these supplements in the detox plan help my organs that might be taxed a bit on this diet with very little vegetables and no fruit? I am skeptical about #2...I think raw fruits and vegetables are so important inour diets, yet, I do need to drop weight fast. I look forward to any thoughts that you might have.

    Q: Hi Dherbs.com, My question is regarding fibroids. I have been told I have had fibroids about the size of someone 3 months pregnant. I have been told there are two in clusters. They gave me the diameters, but I don't have that information at this time. My OB/GYN has told me he believes it is causing me to be slightly anemic. I have been trying some remedies on my own like more exercise and a change in diet. My primary physician does not recommend surgery she has me taking iron ferrous sulfate supplements twice per day to help with my iron count. It seems to be helping. The only problem I have with taking the iron supplements is that it sometimes causes constipation and I am normally pretty regular. I usually eliminate 2 times per day sometimes 3. My OB/GYN on the other hand keeps pushing for me to having surgery. They had me take BC pills, however I took myself off of them because they made me sick. I took them only for 6 months. I'm 45 and have never taken BC pills ever and I don't want to start now. I've never been pregnant. I flow heavy on my 2nd and 3rd day heavy and after that it is manageable. My cycle has improved however I want to reduce the flow on those days if possible and of course dissolve the fibroid if at all possible. Doctors tell me they won't go away unless removed. I used to be on my cycle for 7 days and 4 of those days were heavy. Now I'm normally on for 4 days and only the 2nd and 3rd day are heavy. I know that as I reach menopause they may shrink in size, however I'm still always off from that. I eat no red meat however I do eat fish and poultry. I eat a pretty good balance of vegetables and fruits, mostly raw and steamed. I drink lactaid milk. I don't eat much dairy except cheese and eggs occasionally. I do have a weakness, I love potato chips. I know this is not good. I can feel the fibroid get bigger when I eat them. When I stop for a period of time it decreases in size. At least I feel like it does. I'm not a sugar craver, however during the week before my cycle I'll crave sweets. I usually resist. I feel it's my diet that has caused the fibroids as well as every female in my family has had a hysterectomy due to fibroids. I think it is also hereditary as well. Whatever the case I'd like to know what regimen can you put me on that will help me? The goal is to reduce or dissolve the size of the fibroid so it is not affecting my iron level. I'm also starting to see my abdomen get bigger when I've always had a flat stomach. Perhaps this is me just getting older, however I think it's the fibroids. Constant low levels over time can't be good. I hope I have provided you enough information to give me your recommendation. If not please feel free to e-mail me for any additional information you need. I'm looking for a natural cure. Outside of this condition I'm in very good health. No problem with weight, high blood pressure or high cholesterol. I'm pretty athletic and active as well. Please advise. I look forward to your recommendation.     I recommend you perform the FULL BODY DETOX kit followed by the FIBRIOD BUSTER CLEANSE AND REGIME. Perform them back to back. Take a break for about a month and perform both of them again.     Q: I am interested in starting the Full Body Detox program. At this time, I would like to know which program is best for me.     Q: I was online searching for some natural treatments for hair growth in Black Men when I came across your article.     Q: What do you tell someone that believes that eating meat is better than eating products not made of meat such as wheat pasta, brown rice, etc. My wife eats way too much meat, and she always says that she needs it for the protein.
