The word “hernia” comes from a Latin word meaning ‘rupture.’ Basically, a hernia is some kind of rupture.

Causes and Risk Factors

Hernia can happen in many different parts of the body.

Abdominal Hernia

An abdominal hernia is a hernia in which a loop of bowel protrudes through the abdominal structure, often through the site of an old surgical scar. It is also known as ‘ventral hernia.’

Diaphragmatic Hernia

A diaphragmatic hernia is the protrusion of part of the stomach through an opening in the diaphragm, most commonly an abnormally enlarged esophageal hiatus.

In some cases the intestines may also herniate into the chest. The enlargement of the normal opening for the esophagus may be caused by trauma, congenital weakness, increased abdominal pressure, or relaxation of ligaments of skeletal muscles, and permits part of the stomach to slide into the thorax. A sliding hiatus hernia, one of the most common pathologic conditions of the upper GI tract, may occur at any age but is most frequent in elderly and middle-aged people. A kind of diaphragmatic hernia is hiatus hernia.

Femoral Hernia

A femoral hernia is a hernia in which a loop of the intestine descends through the femoral canal into the groin.

Hiatus Hernia

A hiatus hernia is a protrusion of a portion of the stomach upward through the diaphragm. The condition occurs in about 40% of the population, and most people display few, if any, symptoms. The major difficulty in symptomatic patients is gastroesophageal reflux, the backflow of the acid contents of the stomach into the esophagus.

Inguinal Hernia

Inguinal hernia is a hernia in which a loop of the intestine enters the inguinal canal, sometimes filling, in a male, the entire scrotal sac. Of all hernias, 75% to 80% are inguinal hernias.

An inquinal hernia so large that it passes into the scrotum is called a scrotal hernia.

Umbilical Hernia

Umbilical hernia is a soft, skin-covered protrusion of intestine and omentum through weakness in the abdominal wall around the umbilicus. It usually closes spontaneously within 1 to 2 years. This hernia commonly occurs in newborns (new babies).

Herniated Disk

Herniated disk is a rupture of the fibrocartilage surrounding an invertebral disk, releasing the nucleus pulposus that cushions the vertebrae above and below. The resultant pressure on spinal nerve roots may cause considerable pain and damage the nerves. The condition most frequently occurs in the lumbar region.

Natural Healing For Hernia

Under allopathic medicine or allopathic medical approaches, hernias are repaired via the process of surgery. Hernias (all kinds) take time to heal.

Perform the Sea Salt soak daily (for all hernias, umbilicus hernia is optional).

Colonic hydrotherapy is highly recommended (for all hernias except umbilicus hernia).

Consider seeing a chiropractic specialist.

Reiki, pranic healing, acupuncture/acupressure, and magnet therapy are all highly recommended for healing purposes of all hernias (umbilicus hernias are optional should a parent choose to use one of these healing modalities). Choose the modality that you feel is best for you or that gives your relief and aids in your healing process.

When using magnets, never apply the South side to the body as South stimulates and North is healing. Always use the North side of a magnet.

Umbilical hernia

Umbilical hernias usually reduce to normal or near normal within a year or two so parents, especially mothers, shouldn’t worry. These usually reduce in its own time.

An old wives tale suggests taping a quarter over the protruding navel. If anything, you can tape a flat-shaped clear quartz crystal over the herniated area from time to time to facilitate healing.

From time to time, gently massage the baby’s abdomen and stomach with natural oil (coconut oil, olive oil, jojoba oil) or shea butter, massaging the area in a circular motion.

NOTE: Do not feed a baby grains or honey for the first 2 years of life! Grains are too hard on the baby’s digestive tract and digestion process.

Hiatus or hiatal hernia
When there is hiatus or hiatal hernia, the condition is due to too much acid in the body (gastrointestinal tract) due to acidic diet, which results from meat, dairy, and refined grain consumption. Too much acid (from poor diet) in the body throws of the natural acidity level of the stomach and GI tract.

Herniated disk
Sleeping on a magnetic pad is also helpful for healing in a herniated disk condition. Visit one of the following sites to order a magnetic mattress pad:

  • MagneticMattressCovers.com
  • BetterHealthInnovations.com
  • shokos.com
  • nextag.com

Get plenty of rest and stay off your feet as much as possible when there is herniated disk.

Periodically, place a hot pack on the herniated disk area. Alternate between cold pack and heat pack is you wish to do so.

Also, you can place green-colored crystals on the herniated disk area as well. The color green stimulates healing.

Dietary Intervention

For a brief period of time, consider a RAW FOODS diet (for all kinds of hernias)! Abstain from eating acidic foods, which are processed, refined, and cooked foods. For raw food recipes and living, see our Dietary Choices section (under More Services on the home page) at www.dherbs.com

Eat plenty of raw, organic fruits (especially mango and papaya) and vegetables. Consume plenty of raw fruit and vegetable juice as well!

Drinking 1-2 ounces of Aloe Vera juice daily will also help.

Refrain from consuming acidic beverages, beverages such as coffee, soda pop, wine/alcohol/beer, lattes, milk, Gatorade, commercial brand fruit beverages, etc. (for all kinds of hernias). Instead, drink plenty of alkaline water (see article on Alkaline Water) and herbal teas (see Dherbs.com Herbal Teas section in the on-line store).

Drink plenty of vegetable juice daily too.

One can counteract any over-acidic situation and issue by consuming more alkalizing foods and beverages.

DHerbs offers relief from all hernia except for umbilical hernia. When there is inguinal hernia, males should perform specific cleanses to help bring recovery from hernia’s.

After performing the Dherbs.com cleanses above, a good daily regimen includes taking the following herbal compounds:

Perform the Sea Salt Soak as often as you can.

When there is herniated disk, perform the:

Q: About 8 years ago my boyfriend and I had intercourse, and this one time he said that when we had intercourse that his penis felt like it was burning. We both went to the health clinic, had cultures done and could not find anything wrong with him. they told me that I had a yeast infection. since then he has had a hernia repaired. Now he has another hernia and is going to get that fixed. he says that the tip of his penis gets red, and it burns really bad when he urinates. about 2 years ago he went to a urologist. He told my boyfriend that his prostate was swollen and that it sat to the left a little bit and that the urethra tube was swollen. He gave my boyfriend a prescription for urinating and that was it. He spent $800 dollars and the problem is still there. We have tried everything including herbs. Any suggestions as what it could be and what he could take?

Sounds like your boyfriend has serious inflammation of the penis. Only mucus/acidity causes inflammation like this. The prostate would not cause the tip of the penis to swell up.

Inflammation while urinating usually denotes STD (sexually-transmitted disease) infection. However, it could be that your vagina is too acidic. It's most definitely of a sexual nature. You and your boyfriend should both perform the 20-day Full Body Cleanse and abstain from sex during this time to purify and strengthen your bodies.

For temporary relief of the penile inflammation, have him dip the head of his penis in a bowl or cup of cold aloe vera gel. Make sure he drinks a half cup of BITTER cranberry juice (diluted with water) daily as well.

He should also bathe in hot water DAILY with 2 boxes of sea salt added and a cup of hydrogen peroxide.

Q: My soon to be three year old son will be having surgery next week on Tuesday to correct an umbilical hernia he's had since birth. I know he will need something for pain relief. Most doctor's recommend children's Tylenol...What do you suggest?? I will be giving him the "Children's Detox Kit" soon after to speed up healing and detoxification.

Poor little boy! That pain will be recorded in his cellular memory. For pain, make him a tea consisting of white willow bark, black willow bark, meadowsweet, and feverfew. Herbs probably won't do much justice to quell his pain though. After the surgery, he will need the Children's Detox so you have the right idea for your son after the surgery.

Q: Peace, and light good brother I just read your scorpio article I"m glad you wrote it. I was born with a hernia, I had surgery when I was young. I sweat a lot sometimes, and also my best friends is a Scorpio, both Nov 17, 1978. But, also have ever heard of prune belly syndrome, I suffer from that, it makes my stomach kinda like a rubber band with the elastic wore out.

Q: I'm sorry to bother you with these problems, but I?m trying to avoid the doctor as much as possible. Although I had seen (two of them) in the past, but neither were able to find the problem. Approximately an inch and a half above my naval (belly button), there?s a small knot. It's not always sore when I slightly press it...sometimes it is. I even had a couple of ultra sounds performed. Nothing was found. Both doctors (including myself) initially thought it was a hernia. But it ended up not being the case. But it seems like every other week it flares up so bad, it have me bending over (for a short period) only to ease the pain in my stomach. The knot would also slightly protrude. This would continue a few hours. Is there anything you would suggest...besides surgery of course? I?m sure there?s an herb or two that can be taken to rectify this problem. I?m just not able to find it. Now about my brother... He's losing weight without an explanation. He?s been to a few doctors but neither were able to find the problem. He even had an AIDS test...which had come back negative. He sometimes sweat from his face for no apparent reason. When he coughs, it?s sometimes long and aggressive.

    1. I recommend the 3-week Full body Detox for your navel protrusion which seems to flare up due to acidity (acid causes inflammation). Also get a few colonics performed. Make sure you bathe in sea salt from now on with every bath you take.

    2. In re your brother, a host of things could be responsible for him releasing weight. It could be parasites, cancer, or some auto-immune disorder. I recommend that he too clean his temple (Full Body Detox) and try our Anorexia-Rid formula. A clean body always acts right. Watch your diets too.

Q: I'm a 51 y/o Latino female born w/a heart murmur, with a 20 y/o history of Type 1 Diabetes and hypertension. Who recently suffered two minor strokes due to a blood clot. I am prescribed three types of medication for high blood pressure, one diuretic, insulin and pill for diabetes. My medical history includes the following surgeries: Tonsils removed (5 yrs old), removal of cysts (19 yrs old), Caesarian (28 yrs old) and removal of gall bladder (38). Had an ablation of the uterus due to heavy flow of blood and multiple cysts in ovaries with large fibroid present. According to doctors I'm undergoing menopause. An endonoscopy revealed an hiatel hernia and cysts in the thyroid gland. Also, a colonoscopy revealed internal hemorrhoids with diverticulitis. Had an abdominal sonogram which revealed fatty tissues around the pancreas. My husband has been researching your products and he seems to be very interested and believes that you can help me. However, I would like to know the following: How sick will I get with the detoxification regimen? How soon can I expect some positive results to occur? Do I have to stop taking my maintenance medications? I need some answers to these questions for reassurance before I decide to invest in your products. Looking forward to your reply.

Q: I have been experiencing very trying health issues for many years (over 25 years). The trouble began when my gall bladder was removed 26 years ago. I had mood swings, lack of energy, and severe diarrhea. Approximately 13 years ago I had an additional surgery for an umbilical hernia. Due to pre-op tests, my physician diagnosed me with thyroid disease and placed me on synthroid. This medication dramatically improved the digestive issues I had experienced for many years. I had very loose bowels when menstruating and when I was ill. I am overweight and have dealt with weight issues all my life. Three years ago I had a scare where I thought I experienced a heart attack. I spent three days in the hospital and learned of many health risks. My triglycerides were extremely high along with my sugar being borderline. I have been tested for diabetes on a number of occasions in my life but never show to be. There are numerous cases of diabetes in my family. My mother and one sister are insulin dependent and one other sister is on some form of pill medication for diabetes. At that time, I gave up sugar and began a regime at the gym. The have not eaten any sweets other than what I get in a little ketchup occasionally or some other kind of sauce that may contain some sugar. I have gone to the gym with minimal results in losing weight. I had a total hysterectomy six weeks ago. My regular GP has been on vacation and I've been dealing with one of her associates. This dr. sent me in for glucose tolerance and she has since diagnosed me as Type II Diabetic. She put me on a medication called "Metformin" and has me taking a 500 mg pill twice daily. I have only been on this medication for three days. I have been very careful to eat only what they say I can. I am experiencing the same issues as before with the diarrhea. Last night I was up all night with this and it is like water coming out of me. I am unable to find a physician who understands that I want to lose the weight, but cannot when I'm constantly dehydrated and feeling lethargic. When I have this constant problem, I am not able to do what I need to do for my overall health. Sorry to be so wordy but I wanted to explain the full extent of what I am experiencing. My friend told me to get on this website and explain my issues. He feels that you may be able to guide me in the direction of a natural product or products that can help me to have normal bowel movements and therefore begin doing the physical exercise that is needed for me to reduce my chances of becoming an insulin dependent diabetic.

Q: Is there anything for people with herniated discs? If you have, would you share what knowledge you have about the two with me? I would appreciate that so much. Thank you.

Because herniated disks usually results in pressure on spinal roots they cause considerable pain and damage nerves. I recommend a person take the FULL BODY DETOX for the whole body and after detoxing, take lots of MSM SULFUR and 6-9 capsules of NERVES FORMULA. A chiropractic should also be seen and acupuncture or acupressure should be considered.

Q: My question is about hair loss. I am a 45 year old African American female. I started losing my hair about 15 years ago. I specifically remember unusual symptoms before it started to fall out. First, my entire scalp had a burning sensation, and it was very tender to the touch. It was very difficult to brush, comb and wash. Then after that, I am not sure how much longer after, but a dry patch of skin developed toward the back of my head (approximately 1 inch in diameter). I was able to peel it off and pull it through the strains of hair (very weird). That happened a couple of times and not too long after that, my hair started to fall out in large amounts for a fairly long period of time. At the moment I would say that I am mostly bald with hair mostly around the edges. Also I would like to mention that hair started to grow on my chest BUT I started to lose hair in my vaginal area. Sorry if some of this sounds sketchy but it's been 15 years!! I will try to give you a little bit of my history. I am 5'8" and 135lbs. I would say that for the most part, I have been an athlete all my life. My menses were very irregular sometimes and/or absent for long periods of time. When my menses were present, I had very bad cramps and clotting. My menses are now very regular and I hardly have any cramps, my flow is light and very little clotting. I would have to say that it is now a pleasure to have my "period". This also might be a result from switching my diet to a vegetarian diet. I have been a vegetarian for about 16 years. I would say 20% is dairy, but after reading your articles, I am trying my best to become vegan, hopefully even a raw foodist. I also eat tofu. I have never had hair problems growing up. I did get relaxers, but only twice a year. I have had my appendix removed when I was in elementary school. My bowel movements are usually once a day. (I know it needs to be 3.) So anyway, I have been to a couple of medical doctors to no avail, so now I am coming to you. I just received the following products from your company today (10-06-08). I am looking forward to using them. - MSM SULFUR - ELECTRIC GREENS CELL FOOD - COLON FORMULA - HEALING HERBAL TOOTH POWDER - HAIR OIL One last note: I have had maybe one cold in the last 3 years. I can't remember the last time I had the flu. So thank the Lord, my health has been pretty good. Thank you for reading about my situation and hopefully you can shed some light on what is going on with my body.

Have you read the 2 health articles on hair ("HAIR PROBLEMS" and "BLACK HAIR, NAPPY HAIR")? If not, please read these articles for remedy and recourse. Also, read our article "SKIN DISORDER = BLOOD DISORDER"."

Q: Is it possible that the Headache and Pain formula that my mother has currently been on since June of this year could be causing her to have internal bleeding. She is peeing brown at times. Her blood work came back fine. Her kidney are functioning normally. I wonder if there is something that I am giving her to cause this. Currently she is on your Headache and Pain formula, Calcium Formula, Nerves formula, Joint formula, MSM formula, and CNS formula. Everything is normal except for the brown looking urine she has developed for over a month now and it occurs in the morning. Do you know what could be causing this? Am I giving her too many herbs at one time? Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you, Dherbs.com. I appreciate it.

No, not at all! Herbs don't cause problems. They help heal them! The morning piss is usually the most toxic one, releasing the toxins and poisons that have been broken down at night during sleep. This is normal and is a sign her body is normalizing itself. There's nothing to worry about. There never is! Her body is healing itself!

After your cleanses, your daily regimen should consist of: Thyroid Formula, Electric Greens, Weight Loss (Release) Formula, Bowel Mover, and HYPERLINK "http://www.dherbs.com/store/rainforest-tonic-tea-p-289.html" Rainforest tea.

Q: My question is what could be causing my puffy eyes? I've had them for probably 6 or 8 months now (maybe more). They sometimes will have a little darkness added to them. Sometimes I wake up and whatever side I've been laying on, that eye will be even more swollen than the other side, but they are usually the puffiest when I first wake up. Sometimes it looks like I've been bopped in the eye in my sleep. I've cut out a lot of the processed foods and stay away from sugars for the most part. I drink only water and juice once a day (5 carrots, 1 green apple, 1" ginger root, handful of parsley and 1/2 beet with greens. I get plenty of rest (although I've always had a hard time feeling rested) but not sure if the eyes have anything to do with rest. It seems more like it has to do with something else internally. What advice can you give and what supplements would you recommend. I'm currently taking your Multi-Vitamins and Minerals formula along with your VITAMIN B COMPLEX (which I love them both). Have been on them for about 1 1/2 weeks now I guess. I also take your CANDIDA BUSTER and the COLON FORMULA (I was having a problem with constipation for the past couple months, did some of your recommended enemas but for some reason my body still seems to get stopped up easily lately).
